[RollTideFan] Irish Fire Willingham

Notre Dame Fires Coach Willingham

By TOM COYNE
Associated Press Writer

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Coach Tyrone Willingham was fired by Notre Dame on Tuesday
after three seasons in which he failed to return one of the nation's most
storied football programs to prominence.

Willingham had a record of 21-15, including 6-5 this season. The Fighting Irish
lost 41-10 to No. 1 Southern California on Saturday.

It was not immediately clear whether Willingham would coach the team at the
Insight Bowl on Dec. 28. Notre Dame accepted the invitation to the game on
Sunday.

Athletic director Kevin White scheduled a news conference for later Tuesday.

[RollTideFan] Peach selects FLA

2004-11-30 Thread ronrice
Florida SEC pick for Peach

By CHIP TOWERS
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 11/30/04

The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl selected Florida as the SEC participant in its Dec.
31 game at the Georgia Dome, executive director Gary Stokan said.

The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl's selection committee met in the Ivan Allen Room in
the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce building Monday night to choose between
Florida (7-4, 4-4 SEC) and Alabama (6-5, 3-5) from the SEC side. An official
invitation can't be extended until Sunday, after the SEC Championship Game.

The selection committee on Monday also eliminated Virginia from consideration
from the ACC side. So with Florida State accepting a bid to the Gator Bowl,
that means Florida will play the loser of Saturday's game between No. 10
Virginia Tech and No. 8 Miami.

"We figure we can't lose either way," Stokan said.

It will be the Gators' first Peach Bowl appearance since Dec. 31, 1981, when
they lost to West Virginia 26-6. Florida's struggles this season resulted in
the firing of coach Ron Zook, who hasn't said if he will stay on for the bowl.
However, the Gators beat Florida State in the regular-season finale.

Virginia Tech (9-2) and Miami (8-2) will be playing for the ACC championship
and a BCS bid on Saturday. The Hurricanes and Florida are natural rivals who
are not scheduled to meet again in the regular season until 2008. But the
Hokies and their fervent following may actually travel better to Atlanta.

The Peach Bowl is headed toward an eighth consecutive sellout. However, some
tickets are still available by calling 404-586-8499.

Re: Re: [RollTideFan] When will a final decision be made

2004-11-22 Thread ronrice
No, actually. It appears to be all or nothing for Auburn. If Tennessee beats
them UT gets the SEC's automatic BCS bid. That still leaves two at-large bids.
One may assume that Utah locked up one of those this weekend. They should
finish sixth or higher in the BCS.

So. . . that leaves one more at-large bid. If AU loses to the Volunqueers then
they'll surely be dropped below California and Texas. Cal appears to be a lock
for the Rose. If so, there goes your two at-large bids.

I'll have to agree with Slef on Bama's bowl. It looks like Music City. I
think Zook took the Peach away by upsetting the criminoles in Tallahassee.

Joe please turn off Rush and Hannity and expose yourself to another viewpoint. If you
think taxes are high in the U.S. then you don't know jack about the rest of the world.

Jobs are leaving the U.S. because we, collectively, earn so much more than many other
countries. A garment worker in Central America makes less annually than a company
pays for medical insurance for an American worker.

But I get your logic: All bad decisions are a direct result of Democrats. All good
decisions are a direct result of Republicans. What a refreshingly simple outlook on
life.

0-12 is almost certain. Inexplicably, MSU is favored this weekend against Vandy. If
MSU plays to form the Commodores should finally break their conference losing streak.

[RollTideFan] Tubby house

2003-09-10 Thread ronrice
Auburn, Alabama
Coach Tommy Tuberville after arriving home from Atlanta Saturday night
after AU’s defeat to Georgia Tech discovered he could not get into his
house. Someone had apparently put an endzone in front of it.

[RollTideFan] TennDud speaks

2003-08-14 Thread ronrice
>From the Bham News:

Vols booster testifies in Cottrell's suit

08/14/03

MIKE PERRIN
News staff writer

MEMPHIS - University of Tennessee fan Roy Adams, decked out in a bright orange sports
coat, blue NCAA-embroidered Oxford shirt, Vols necktie and silver-fox cap, testified
for almost four hours Wednesday during a deposition in former Alabama assistant coach
Ronnie Cottrell's lawsuit against the NCAA.

Adams, who frequently posts under the name "TennStud" on the Web site
www.gridscape.com, brought along a bottle of Jack Daniels whiskey for the occasion.

According to attorneys in the room, Adams poured himself at least one drink, saying it
soothed his nerves.

According to Cottrell's lawsuit, Adams is one of at least three Tennessee boosters at
the core of a conspiracy to "destroy" the University of Alabama football program.

The lawsuit, joined in July by Ivy Williams, another former UA assistant, seeks $60
million in damages from seven defendants claiming Cottrell and Williams have been
unable to find comparable jobs since being fired at Alabama. Adams is not a defendant.

Cottrell is out of coaching while Williams is an assistant at a Division II school in
Georgia.

Adams gave his deposition in Cottrell attorney Philip Shanks' conference room filled
with Alabama football memorabilia, seated facing a large cartoon poster of legendary
UA coach Paul Bryant with the slogan "The Bear Wants You."

Afterward, Adams criticized Cottrell's attorneys, including lead attorney Thomas
Gallion of Montgomery, for filing the suit.

"I still think it's an incredulous, stupid, lacking in any legal basis, harassment
lawsuit, probably financed by the local Bama booster," Adams said.

The Bama booster he referred to was Logan Young, who was disassociated from the
Alabama program in the aftermath of the Albert Means and Kenny Smith recruitment
investigation that landed the Tide on NCAA probation.

"I question whether Mr. Cottrell (has) the deep pockets to pay all these lawyers,"
Adams said. "This is just a harassment suit, financed by the local Bama booster to try
to get information to help his cause down the line.

"I would guess 25 or 50 percent of the facts that they assumed in asking me questions
are in error."

Gallion said Adams contradicted himself on several occasions during the deposition.

"He admitted he called the University of Alabama the `Evil Empire' on a regular basis.
He thought they were dealing with slave-traders. He started out calling Lynn Lang and
Milton Kirk" - Means' former coaches at Trezevant High School who solicited money from
college recruiters - "slave-traders and co-conspirators," Gallion said. "Then at the
end of the deposition changed and said they were very truthful, honest people."

Gallion said when he attempted to find out how he was able to post Alabama's NCAA
sanctions on the Internet before they were released by the university, Adams became
evasive.

"He claimed to be drunk when he did his posting," Gallion said. "He was `inebriated'
and he didn't remember it.

"The guy was kind of an interesting character. He admitted, a) being a drunk, b)
hating Alabama and c) doing everything he could to harm them regardless."

Adams said he was interested in exposing recruiting violations in Memphis.

"They think that University of Tennessee boosters had something to do with - and the
phrase Mr. Gallion kept using - `bringing down Alabama,'" Adams said. "Well, the
University of Tennessee boosters, certain individuals in this community, did have
something to do with it to the extent that the recruiting violations going on, the
buying and selling of coaches and athletes in this community, was going on right under
our noses.

"You'd have to be deaf, dumb and blind not to know what was going on ... "The
University of Alabama under (coach Mike) DuBose and prior to that was obviously
corrupt," Adams said, "and flagrant in their violations of NCAA rules as far as
recruiting goes here in Memphis."

Tuscaloosa County Circuit Judge Steve Wilson has set an Oct.2 date to hear motions to
dismiss the lawsuit.

Along with the NCAA, Cottrell and Williams are suing Thomas E. Yeager, chairman of the
NCAA Committee on Infractions; Richard Johanningmeier, an NCAA enforcement
investigator; Gene Marsh and Marie Robbins, UA's faculty representative and former
compliance officer; Tom Culpepper, a freelance recruiting analyst; and attorney
Richard Hilliard, who was hired by Alabama to help prepare a response to the charges.
