[RollTideFan] BAMA to play Notre Dame!
well... kinda. Notre Dame, N.C. State on Tide schedule Thursday, May 19, 2005 STEVE KIRK News staff writer TUSCALOOSA - The Notre Dame and North Carolina State men's basketball teams have agreed to play the University of Alabama at the Crimson Tide's remodeled Coleman Coliseum this season. Also coming to Tuscaloosa is a first-round game in the Preseason NIT, where on Nov. 15 Alabama will play host to Miami of Ohio. Add in a game at Big 12 powerhouse Oklahoma and potential later-round NIT games against Duke, Missouri, UCLA, Memphis or Seton Hall, and it's no wonder Mark Gottfried said Wednesday that his team will be playing one of the toughest schedules in the country. Only the NIT game has been announced. Other contracts are in the mail, and it could be several weeks before Alabama releases its 2005-06 schedule. First-round Preseason NIT games will be played over two days. Games on Nov. 14 include Manhattan at Seton Hall, Sam Houston State at Missouri, Drexel at Princeton, and Boston University at Duke. Games on Nov. 15 include Wisconsin-Milwaukee at Memphis, Miami of Ohio at Alabama, Army at Temple, and New Mexico State at UCLA. [RollTideFan] Committee denies UA nominee McDonald
http://www.decaturdaily.com/decaturdaily/news/050518/ua.shtml Committee denies UA nominee McDonald By M.J. Ellington DAILY Staff Writer [EMAIL PROTECTED] · (334) 262-1104 MONTGOMERY A Senate committee denied Decatur native Sid McDonald's re-nomination to the board of trustees of The University of Alabama late Monday. But McDonald will remain a trustee, an area lawmaker said, because the full Senate didn't vote. Tuesday, political observers said the Senate Committee on Confirmation's action had little to do with McDonald and everything to do with Mobile businessman Riley Boykin Smith, who lobbied for a trustee post. Area legislators who question the way the Senate committee made its decision believe a court may have to determine if committee action was legal. The Senate approves all nominees to the UA trustee board, which is a self-perpetuating board. The trustees nominate people to serve on the board when vacancies arise. McDonald chaired the board's nominating committee when it selected three new members and re-nominated four current trustees Feb. 4. The trustees nominated Marietta Murray Urquhart of Mobile for the vacant seat in District 1, where Smith lives. Smith is the grandson of former U.S. Rep. Frank Boykin, who played football with Paul W. Bear Bryant at Alabama, and has deep roots in Alabama politics. Smith served as state commissioner of conservation and natural resources in Gov. Don Siegelman's administration. His brother-in-law, Wallace Malone, a vice president of Wachovia Bank, formerly headed SouthTrust Bank. Rumors about the nominations and Smith's interest circulated through the State House when the session convened in February. After the UA board nominates trustees, the nominations go to the Senate Committee on Confirmations, which votes on the nominees and reports nominations to the full Senate. The committee can substitute its own nominees for the trustee board's slate. That last happened in 1983. The confirmations committee never officially met this week, according to Senate records. Instead, committee Chairman E.B. McClain, D-Midfield, individually polled some committee members. McClain's committee never reported this out, said Sen. Tommy Ed Roberts, D-Hartselle. There were several other confirmations reported out, but the full Senate never considered these nominations. Roberts believes the committee by itself cannot confirm or reject nominees. They need full Senate vote. Roberts also believes the university may have to restart the process and resubmit the nominations. I believe that where we are headed with this, it may take a court case to resolve the constitutional question, Roberts said. Sen. Tom Butler, D-Madison, said he was disappointed by the committee's action and does not think the action was legal. Sid will stay on the board because the Senate did not act on the recommendation, Butler said. Senate rules require that Senate committees have meetings, but the definition of meeting is in the eyes of the committee chair, said Butler. Roberts and Butler said they don't know who is backing Smith. I am not part of this, Sen. Roger Bedford, D-Russellville, said Tuesday. In February, reports surfaced that Bedford was interested in McDonald's seat, but Bedford denied those reports. John J. McMahon Jr., president pro tem of The University of Alabama System trustees board, and Dr. Malcolm Portera, system chancellor, issued a statement on the committee vote. The statement said McClain reported that the committee rejected the two nominees. The Board of Trustees has great respect for the Senate and the integrity of its procedures, the statement said. We continue to believe that the majority of the Confirmations Committee did not support the purported effort to reject these trustees without a public meeting. It is noteworthy that there are 13 voting members of the Confirmations Committee and that only six were reported as voting in favor of rejection. In addition to Urquhart, new trustee members who await Senate confirmation include Karen Brooks of Tuscaloosa and Joe Ritch of Huntsville. Others re-appointed with McDonald are Paul Bryant Jr. of Tuscaloosa, Jim Wilson III of Montgomery and John McMahon of Birmingham. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

[RollTideFan] Gator Todd steps up as Bama heads into postseason
Gator Todd steps up as Bama heads into postseason By Christopher Walsh Sports Writer May 18, 2005 One would think that the son of a University of Alabama legend would constantly be asked about his football heritage. But that's not the case for Gator Todd. Instead, almost everyone asks him about his name before anything regarding his father or his proficiency on the golf course. Perhaps that will change somewhat this weekend when the freshman will help lead the Crimson Tide in the East Regional of the 2005 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships. In order to advance to the championships (June 1-4, at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.) eighth-seeded Alabama needs to finish in the top 10 out of 27 teams competing at Golf Club of Tennessee in Nashville. It's going to be very competitive, Todd said. The East Regional is usually the toughest. We're going to have to play really well, but I think we're up to it. Even though it's only his first season, Todd has been one of the players helping carry the Crimson Tide, which is looking to overcome a last-round setback at the recent SEC Championships to finish ninth. He and fellow freshman Mark Harrell managed to both place in the top 25, with Todd tying Auburn's Lee Williams for 12th overall (71-71-79 -- 221). I felt like the whole year I've played two good rounds, but couldn't finish a tournament, Todd said. One day would kill me. I don't think I've played my best yet this year, but our team has really stuck together. It seems like we've taken turns playing well. We've all pitched in well. Actually, during the six spring team events, Todd has led the Tide with a 74.94 stroke average, and four times he's placed in the top 12. The other four golfers competing in all spring tournaments were junior transfer Thomas Hagler (75.11), Harrell (75.17), senior Clint Provost (75.61) -- who last year shot a UA career low round of 65 in the SEC Championships -- and freshman Joseph Sykora (76.89). I'm sure he'll be very excited, Tide coach Jay Seawell said about Todd. He just needs to put those wild thoughts out of his head and do what he does best. He needs to let the game just happen. All coaches say that, but it's true. He sees the finish line before he gets there. He's worried about winning the tournament on the first hole on the last day. I think he's learned a great deal. Todd has done that learning in a relatively short period of time. Todd, who grew up focusing on baseball and basketball, didn't start playing golf until he was 14 and quickly found a new passion. At Coffee High School in Florence, he was named an American Junior Golf Association All-American, ranked in the top 25 juniors nationally, shot 67 in the first round of the 2004 Class 5A state championship and was named all-state. But coming to Alabama had much more to do with Seawell than his family. He just really turned the whole program around, Todd said. I think he's the best coach in the country. From a players' standpoint, he makes you think that you can do it. He thinks a lot about short game, which is the main thing about scoring. This weekend will mark the Crimson Tide's 14th NCAA Tournament appearance and ninth regional since 1991. Its best finish was third in 1975 (led by Jerry Pate), though Seawell coached Augusta State to a fifth-place finish in 2002 before leaving for Alabama. With the conclusion of the academic year, the team has been concentrating solely on golf and surviving one of three regionals. The keys? Hit the fairways, avoid big mistakes and get off to a good start. I couldn't get the ball to drop all year, Todd said about his putting. If we can just get a couple of guys playing well it will probably feed off on the other guys. Incidentally, Todd's father, Richard, is the former Alabama quarterback who lettered from 1973-75 before being a first-round draft pick by the New York Jets in 1975. He introduced his son him to golf. He's obviously a legend somewhat and I'm proud of that, Todd said. He's been to every golf tournament I've ever played. I don't see him ever missing any of my tournaments at all. Oh, and as for the name, it's a nickname his aunt gave him when he was two months old. His real name is Richard. [RollTideFan] Alabama legend Bennett to be inducted into College Football Hall of Fame
http://www.tidesports.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050518/NEWS/50518005/1011 Alabama legend Bennett to be inducted into College Football Hall of Fame By Ralph D. Russo The Associated Press May 18, 2005 NEW YORK | Cornelius Bennett found out about his election into the College Football Hall of Fame about a month ago, and was asked to keep it to himself until it was formally announced. He couldnt keep the good news totally secret. I had to call and tell Momma and I had to tell my wife, the former Alabama linebacker said at a news conference Wednesday. If I didnt tell them I wouldnt be here today. Bennett, Heisman Trophy winner John Huarte and Southern California tailback Anthony Davis are among the 11 players and two coaches that make up the 2005 Hall of Fame class. They will be inducted in December at an awards banquet in New York and enshrined at the hall in South Bend, Ind., next year. Also entering the Hall of Fame are Pittsburgh offensive lineman Mark May, Michigan defensive back Tom Curtis, Penn State offensive tackle Keith Dorney, Ohio State end Jim Houston, Texas fullback Roosevelt Leaks, Oklahoma running back Joe Washington, Stanford defensive lineman Paul Wiggin and Illinois wide receiver David Williams. Don Nehlen, the winningest coach in West Virginia history, and Pat Dye, who won four Southeastern Conference titles in 12 seasons at Auburn, round out the latest class. Bennett finished seventh in the Heisman balloting as a senior in 1986 and won the Lombardi Award as the nations top lineman or linebacker. Its a great honor, something that were really going to cherish, said Bennett, who played in four Super Bowls with the Buffalo Bills. I can bring my kids to South Bend and show them that Daddy was an all right football player. Huarte won the Heisman for Notre Dame in 1964, quarterbacking the Fighting Irish to a share of the national title. Davis finished second in the Heisman voting as a senior in 1974, but his signature game came in 1972 when he scored six touchdowns against Notre Dame. May is the fourth member of the 1980 Pittsburgh team to make the college Hall of Fame, along with Dan Marino, Hugh Green and Jimbo Covert. Like Bennett, May had a long, successful pro career as part of one of the most famous offensive lines in NFL history the Washington Redskins Hogs. The NFL Hall of Fame would be great, but for me this is it, May said. Nehlen was the 17th coach in Division I-A history to win 200 games and finished his career 202-128-8. During 21 seasons in Morgantown, W. Va., he won 149 games and turned the program into one that could compete with the best in the nation. Still, induction into the Hall of Fame humbled him. I was looking for my wifes name as a voter, Nehlen said. I figured she must have voted about 1,000 times. Dyes head coaching career started at East Carolina and he spent a year at Wyoming before coming to Auburn in 1981. He won three straight SEC titles from 1987-89, and nearly lured Bennett away from rival Alabama. I committed to Auburn for a couple of weeks until coach (Bear) Bryant came to my house and I kind of changed my mind, Bennett said. Coach Dye and I always have a laugh about that. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

[RollTideFan] If You Want to Win in Sports, Wear Red
We already knew wearing crimson made you a winner! Wearing orange makes you a redneck piece of goat fucking shit. Fuck those Homer-sexshul orange blue barner bastards! == http://asia.news.yahoo.com/050518/ap/d8a5pufo0.html If You Want to Win in Sports, Wear Red If winning is everything, British anthropologists have some advice: Wear red. Their survey of four sports at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens shows competitors were more likely to win their contests if they wore red uniforms or red body armor. Across a range of sports, we find that wearing red is consistently associated with a higher probability of winning, report Russell A. Hill and Robert A. Barton of the University of Durham in England. Their findings are in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature. Red coloration is associated with aggression in many animals. Often it is sexually selected so that scarlet markings signal male dominance. Just think of the red stripes on the scowling face of the male Mandrill, Africa's largest monkey species. But red is not exclusively a male trait. It's the female black widow spider that is venomous and displays a menacing red dot on her abdomen. Similarly, the color's effect also may subconsciously intimidate opponents in athletic contests, especially when the athletes are equal in skill and strength, the researchers suggest. In their survey, the anthropologists analyzed the results of four combat sports at the summer games: boxing, tae kwon do, Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling. In those events, the athletes were randomly assigned red protective gear and other sportwear. Athletes wearing red gear won more often in 16 of 21 rounds of competition in all four events. The effect was the same regardless of weight classes, too: 19 of 29 classes had more red winners, and only four rounds had more blue winners. The red effect also might come into play in team sports. The anthropologists made a preliminary analysis of the Euro 2004 international soccer tournament, in which teams wore jerseys of different colors in different matches. They found that five teams scored more goals and won more often when they wore shirts that were predominantly red, as opposed to blue or white jerseys. Scientists don't precisely known how wearing red might give athletes an advantage. But the color delivers implicit messages of vigor and danger. When people get angry, their faces turn red. It's also a reason why stop signs are red. So are most Ferraris. A case can perhaps be made that most of the recent winners of U.S. sports championships have at least a touch of red on their uniforms: among pro teams, the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, the Detroit Pistons. And in college sports, the USC Trojans. But it's the gracious sport of golf that offers the best example. Tiger Woods wears an iconic red shirt on Sundays, the day when most tournaments are won. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

We have a Chinese restaurant in town that make the best sweat tea I ever had. They also sell meat that I don't recognize and call it chicken. Instead of calling it chicken broccoli, I call it the Tom and Jerry special (rat and cat). I have a wide variety of friends and associates of all races. The best man at my wedding was a black guy or African American if you are politically correct. I even had a hUgE crush on a girl in school that was half black and half Korean. Mmm, mmm, mmm..she was a perfect 10 and then some. Let's seeI also sampled a few Turkish, French, Polish and Russian girls while I was in Germany. Heck, we are all pink in the middle, right? My only prejudices are against narrow minded stupid morons (HuGe Wolfcrank on line 1) and just plain mean old assholes (you know who you are), no matter what color they come in. [RollTideFan] (Non) NCAA ponders future of Indian nicknames
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/other/2005-05-15-native-americans-ncaa_x.htm By Steve Wieberg, USA TODAY After wrestling with the politically delicate issue for more than four years, the NCAA may be close to rendering a verdict on the use of Native American mascots and nicknames - from Indians and Braves to Redmen and Savages - by 30 of its member universities. The governing body will conduct the first in a series of summer meetings next month and could decide by August whether it can and should impose a ban on Indian imagery, which critics charge is demeaning and even racist. Ultimate responsibility falls to the NCAA's highest body, the 17-member Executive Committee, which meets in early August. Whether the association will or legally must continue to yield to individual campus discretion - as the NCAA does on such matters as minority hiring - is uncertain. Targets range from Florida State (Seminoles) and Utah (Utes) to lower-division institutions with particularly provocative nicknames: Southeastern Oklahoma (Savages) and Carthage, Wis. (Redmen). What we can do is educate, get the information out there to you, says Southwestern Athletic Conference Commissioner Robert Vowels, who heads the Minority Interests and Opportunities Committee. I can't sit here and say right now that we can enforce something or establish a penalty structure. One possibility, says the NCAA's Corey Jackson, who works closely with the committee, is a lever the association has applied to the issue of flying the Confederate flag or incorporating in their state flags. Two states that do, South Carolina and Mississippi, are barred from hosting association championships. The NCAA's attention to the mascot issue grew out of the flag flap four years ago. This isn't the first time the NCAA has undertaken a review of such nicknames. In 2002, the minority interests committee called for this tradition to be retired. Those schools say the use of the nicknames is in many case a tradition intended to honor Native Americans and their culture. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net

The former Alabama All-America tight end, who defined the position in his 13 seasons (1978-90) with the NFL's Cleveland Browns, has proven to be just as valuable off the field. He's currently general manager and executive vice president of the Baltimore Ravens, a team he helped lead to a Super Bowl title in 2000. There is a strong contingent of Alabama supporters who would like to see the Muscle Shoals native return to the Capstone and apply his experience and success to the Crimson Tide program, and Newsome admits that is something he would enjoy doing -- eventually. At some point I'm definitely coming back home, Newsome said during a break in play Friday at the McDonald's-Cornelius Bennett Celebrity Golf Classic at Lakewood Golf Club's Dogwood course. My son is in the eighth grade and I'd like for him to finish high school where he's at now. As for any job offers from officials at Alabama, or others connected with the school, Newsome said there have been feelers but nothing more. It's good to be wanted, he said, but with the experience I have gained playing the game and working on the administrative side, I think I could be an asset. But there hasn't been any pressure placed on me. I think people respect me and the job I have and what I'm doing. And that's nice. Aside from his record-setting playing career -- he retired as the NFL's all-time leading receiver at tight end and ranked fourth among all receivers -- he has established himself as a respected and successful front-office man. He was the first black to be named a general manager in the NFL, and his success has opened doors for others. I had a good high school coach, I played four years for coach (Paul) Bryant and I played and worked for an owner like Art Modell, so I've been surrounded by people with a passion for the game and men who were just good people, Newsome said. I have learned something from all of them. He took those lessons and developed his own style and approach to his jobs. What (his success) has done is I have blazed a trail for ex-players to remain in the game and let people know we can do a great job, Newsome said. Now, ex-players are coming back into the game and that's great to see. When you are a player and you have accomplished some things, that stays with you. That success helps you. It is a design that has worked for Newsome, who has been named to five halls of fames -- National Football Foundation, NCAA, Pro Football, state of Alabama and Senior Bowl. The success he has enjoyed doesn't give Newsome cause to enjoy those moments as much as it re-charges his efforts to gain more success. === message truncated === Yahoo! oh deer lowered. Will it EVER end? - Original Message - From: Lizard Fish [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'RollTideFan - University of Alabama Athletics Discussion List' RTF@rolltidefan.net Sent: Monday, May 16, 2005 10:18 AM Subject: [RollTideFan] (Non) NCAA ponders future of Indian nicknames http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/other/2005-05-15-native-americans-ncaa_x.htm By Steve Wieberg, USA TODAY After wrestling with the politically delicate issue for more than four years, the NCAA may be close to rendering a verdict on the use of Native American mascots and nicknames - from Indians and Braves to Redmen and Savages - by 30 of its member universities. ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net ___ RTF mailing list RTF@rolltidefan.net http://rolltidefan.net/mailman/listinfo/rtf_rolltidefan.net
