[RollTideFan] Football: Flowing With the 'Tide'

2004-08-15 Thread kurtrasmussen
Football: Flowing With the 'Tide'
Newsweek

Aug. 23 issue - Pompoms, cheerleaders, tailgating and oversize Styrofoam hands—yes,
college-football season is already upon us. Before the first game kicks off next
Saturday, diehard fans—or anyone who finds their antics entertaining, for that
matter—should peruse Warren St. John's ode to fandom, Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer.
In 1999 St. John purchased a used 1978 Allegro motor home and hit the road with the
caravan of University of Alabama fans following their beloved Crimson Tide across the
South. I wanted to understand why we were all so crazy about the sport, he says.

During the four-month road trip detailed in the book, St. John encounters a colorful
group of devout 'Bama supporters whose lives revolve around the pigskin. John Ed
Belvin explains the science of ticket scalping—and bags $25,000 during a game against
Tennessee. Freeman and Betty Reese skip their daughter's wedding because it coincides
with a football game. And although Don Cole's hospital threatens to remove his name
from an organ waiting list should he travel more than two hours from Nashville, Cole
attends every game of the season, only one of which is within those boundaries. If I
can't go to Alabama football games what's the point in living? he asks.

St. John, who left his job as a reporter for The New York Times for one year to pursue
the Rammer Jammer project, shares his own experiences, too. I became a completely
different sort of fan once I started living in an RV in a stadium parking lot with
hundreds of other fans, he recalls. I completely lost perspective on the world
outside of football. Sometimes, that's just what it takes to be a real fan.

Alabama Football Fall Practice Preview
By Mitch Dobbs
Date: Aug 2, 2004

With just over a week remaining until the beginning of fall football practices, the
University of Alabama released its preseason practice schedule on Monday.

Rules allow up to 105 players to report next Monday, although Alabama might hold a
spot for Ezekial Knight, who is awaiting test results to see if he is qualified to
enroll at UA. The 105-man roster is expected to be released this week.

On Monday, Augst 9, the squad will have photo and video mug shots made, be issued
equipment and lockers, and some will be obligated to attend a press gathering at the
football complex later that day. The squad will practice for the first time Tuesday
afternoon, August 10.

Classes for Alabama’s second summer session end on August 11th, and final examinations
for the term will wrap up on the 13th of August, an important date for Anthony Bryant,
who must fulfill graduation requirements this summer in order to be eligible for his
final season. And it’s not unusual for a few players to have academic work that must
be completed.

Another milestone will take place on Saturday, August 14, when coaches get to see
their players in full pads for the first time. The Crimson Tide will begin with
two-a-day practices on the following day, and continue every other day until August
23. In a rule that was in place for the 2003 season, a team may not have consecutive
days of two-a-day practices. Scrimmages dates have not yet been released.

The first day off for the Tide players will be on August 28th, 18 days into fall camp.
On Sunday, August 29th, the squad will begin game week preparation for the season
opener against Utah State, which kicks off at 6 p.m. on September 4, 2004.

After Alabama’s opener with Utah State, the Tide players will practice from 8:45-9:30
PM on Sunday. Monday will be the squad’s off day. Tuesday through Thursday the squad
will practice in the afternoon.

Among players who will not be on the 105-man roster are John Parker Wilson and Drew
Davis, who were greyshirts and are expected to re-sign in 2005. Defensive linemen
Lorenzo Washington and Brandon Fanney will attend prep school and are expected to
re-sign next year as well. Nikita Stover, Kevin Hamilton and Jeramie Holifield will go
the junior college route will be re-recruited in two years.

[RollTideFan] Football relieved a real kind of hunger

Football relieved a real kind of hunger

By Geoff Calkins
February 1, 2004
HOUSTON -

Hunger. It is a word that has been diluted by sports, has lost its meaning.

Hungry for a win.

Hungry for a Super Bowl.

Are they hungry enough?

Which team is hungrier?

Kindal Moorehead can tell you about hunger. The kind that gnaws at your
belly, that slips into your sleep, that forces you to do things you
might not otherwise do.

Like, say, go to school.

You made sure you went to Melrose every day, Moorehead said, because
that's two meals right there.

The Super Bowl has grown into the biggest, gaudiest, richest day in the
life of America.

It is a celebration of excess, of money, of commerce.

Tickets cost $500 a pop. Thirty seconds of advertising cost $2.3 million.

The winning players get $68,000 each. The losing players get $36,500.

Moorehead ponders these numbers, these inconceivable, crazy numbers.

My mother makes like $11,000 a year, he says. How she paid the bills,
I have no idea.

Moorehead is one of two Memphis kids on the Carolina Panthers, the one
you hear less about.

Part of this is because Moorehead is a rookie, a backup defensive
lineman on the best defensive line in the league.

Part of it is because Carolina cornerback Reggie Howard has the better,
cleaner story.

Howard broke his neck at the University of Memphis. He came back.
Presto, happy ending!

Moorehead's story is more complicated, more systemic, more numbingly
common in Memphis.

He grew up poor. Inconceivably poor. For all the usual reasons.

His mother Claria, grew up in rural Mississippi, married at 18, and
moved to Memphis when her husband left.

She bought a tiny house on Pendleton and worked cleaning other people's
houses.

She walked to work. She did what she could. But how do you fight drugs,
and pregnancy, and hopelessness?

All five of her elder children fell into drugs. Five for five.

It was perfectly horrible.

It's a terrible addiction, Moorehead says. We're a blunt family. We
had our fights about it. We still do.

One sister had seven children. Another had two. Another had three.

Most crammed into the little house on Pendleton.

I remember when 19 of us were living there, Moorehead says. Nobody
had their own bed. You just found a place to sleep, on the couch, on the
floor, wherever.

I don't think my mom has ever slept in a bed by herself. She'd usually
have four or six of the little ones in her bed with her.

The small miracle is that Moorehead emerged from this, and it wasn't
just because of football.

He was strong. Steeled by what he saw, maybe.

I never did have no problem with him, Claria says. He wouldn't
complain. 'I ain't got no shoes, I ain't got no pants.' He knew I wasn't
able to do anything else.

And then, before his ninth grade year, a friend dared Moorehead to play
football.

He was in the band at the time. He liked the band.

But they said I was scared to play, he says. I had to prove I wasn't.

It didn't take long to figure out that Moorehead had a future in the
game. Darryl Montgomery, his defensive coordinator at the time,
remembers a play against Covington.

He went into the backfield, took the ball out of the running back's
hands and started running the other way, he says. That was Kindal.

Football made life easier for Moorehead because, well, people help
football players.

Claria remembers former Melrose coach Tim Thompson bringing boxes of
food by the house.

Sometimes, he'd help with Christmas gifts.

Alabama offered a scholarship. Maybe Alabama offered more. Moorehead
won't go into it.

But you imagine growing up the way Moorehead did, you imagine six to a
bed, meals on store credit, crack cocaine not just on the streets, but
in your house, your family.

The NCAA rule book must seem laughable.

I didn't think about getting a scholarship growing up, Moorehead said.
I thought about getting money to buy some food. We'd go rake some
leaves, pump some gas. Anything to get a little money.

Moorehead was a star at Alabama. Then he blew out his Achilles' tendon,
then he messed up his knee, then he wrecked his shoulder.

He was a fifth-round draft pick. Not high enough to cash in big. He's
tight with his money. He'd like to buy his mother a house someday.

He figures she's the hero in this story. She figures he is.

I've had one of my babies make it, she says. That makes me real happy.

Moorehead is still deeply entrenched in the family. He still sleeps in
the house on Pendleton when he goes home.

The little kids love him. Of course, they ask him for stuff.

When I get home, they come running and say, 'Give me a hug,' he says.

Moorehead smiles. The man's not cheap where it counts.

And I always give it to them.

MITCH ALBOM: Better to sit in jail than miss the game

The judge called it the most unusual request I've ever had.

The defense attorney said, I've never heard anything like it.
Even the crook admits he never tried anything this brazen.
Then again, it is Michigan-Ohio State weekend.
The first thing he wanted me to do, said defense attorney Tully
Rogers, was to get him out on bond so he could watch the game. He
promised to come right back. I said, 'I don't think the judge is gonna
go for that. Maybe we can come up with something else.'

What's a crook to do? Jeff Renne, up on forgery charges, thought about
the bad checks he'd written. He thought about the punishment, two years
in prison. But mostly, he thought about -- as most sports fans do -- the
TV reception.

And he made up his mind.
I am guilty, your honor, he told the judge. He then said he would
accept his sentencing, right there, on the spot, if the judge would
grant him one request:

Let him stay in the local jail through the weekend, rather than send him
to the pre-prison reception center.

The local jail has television.
The center does not.

And Renne -- before going up the river -- wanted to watch the game.

NO! Absolutely not. This is ALABAMA football. Expectations must be kept high or we
will get used to being satisfied with
'moral victories' and 'good efforts' and I think that is bullshit. I expect Bama to
WIN every single game they play. Every

Lower expectations now and say it for the next 3-5 years and you can forget Bama
returning to it's historical place. Failure
and success both breed themselves.

Mike, I'm not lowering my expectations. NEVER!! THIS IS ALABAMA
FOOTBALL! Yes, I expect Alabama to win every competition they
enter - football, baseball, tiddlywinks, whatever. I guess my 'amen' to
the original post is just an acceptance of the difficulties facing Coach
Shula and the team - plus a (much too recent) memory of 2000. Yes, I
want the wins, but at least as much as that, I DON'T want to see the
confusion, lackadaisical, me first, out-of-shape,
give-up-in-the-first-quarter attitudes that I saw in 2000. If we have the
teamwork and
commitment that I expect to see from Alabama football, then the wins
will take care of themselves.

I believe the University has set CMS's winning percentage goal at around
53.8% (7-6) for the season. Even though our schedule is extremely tough,
I won't be surprised if Shula pulls out a 69.2% (9-4) season, but only
barring any *key* injuries to the team. As Slef pointed out in his post
last night, this team cannot afford to lose anyone during the season.
With that said, I *hope* they play lights-out football!

But... Hope is not an Action Plan ($1).

Coach Bryant always said that he could take an average player make him
great. My expectations are not going undefeated, but having a winning
season every year even during this difficult time. If CMS is a good
motivator, this will happen I can't live with excuses of lost
scholarships. Motivating the players to play harder than they thought they
could will win many games I still believe that there will always be enough
talent at BAMA because of the tradition to take care of the rest. ROLL DAMN

2003-07-08 Thread Ricky McMahan
Just a little curious as to how folks on the list are feeling about the
upcoming season.

I'm cautiously optimistic (expectations are within reason) and am
anxiously looking forward to fall practice to see how the team reacts to
the new coaches. How weird it must be for the players, to have Fraud at
the end of last season, Price and all new coaches during the spring, now
Shula and a few more new coaches for the fall season. Nothing but
extremely hard work (physical mental) along with good fortune (few
injuries) will put wins in the win column this year.

can't afford to lose players to academics, and other

Speaking of other reasons, I heard the other day that
Grant Dickey had asked to transfer to play for Coach

I looked at the roster and saw that Grant Dickey is from Tyler, Texas.
It's very likely he came to Bama because he liked CDF. If he does go
Bama should be allowed to replace him with a JUCO in December, right?

100,000 toothless hillbillies dressed in orange has to be intimidating.

Re: [RollTideFan] Football #1 at Bama!

2003-06-25 Thread Rick.McMahan
I agree with you on Neyland. I've been twice but neither game involved
Bama. One was a slUT win over Florida in 1991, I believe, the other was
a slUT loss to Georgia Tech in or around 1983. The crowd was crazy
during both contest. Believe it or not, slUT was my second favorite team
most of my football life until Phat-ass Phillip Fulmer became head
coach. That SOB makes me wish the whole state of Tennessee would
disappear. In my opinion he ruined the ALABAMA/Tennessee rivalry.

Considering other venues from the SEC, are you guys guessing that Tiger
Stadium and Neyland Stadium will be listed in front of us? I'm thinking
they will. I've never been to Tiger Stadium, but I have been to Neyland.

Well I did learn a few things about the aggies'
 traditions and most were
impressive, but didn't you guys think the scoreboard
 built for their
poor dead dogs was just a bit overboard? Let me
 repeat, they built a
scoreboard and placed it at the burial site so your
 dead mascots could
 see the score...geeze.
