I always meant to get one of them, but always worried I might scar my Sam
for life if I risked taking a soldering iron to him. (That's aimed at my
soldering skills, not at the DPU...)

Yes if you don't use a DPU then dark magic is really what you need ...

I encountered this after waking my SAM up for the first time in
ages. Tim's (I think - deleted the message) suggestion of removing the
disk and hitting reset a few times worked for me - I eventually got the
noise from the drive that one used to associate with a corrupted disk
during reset. Can only assume that a spike in the power to the controller
chip resets something.

I occasionally get this for no reason with my Sam. I find pop the disk
out the drive, and press reset a few times. Normally I get a nice
"crunch" sound come from the drive with one of the resets, plop the disk
back in and works no problem.

Of course, that's dark magic that may only work with my Sam

If you've got an early sam with version 1 rom (PRINT PEEK 15 prints 10
then )
try doing a:

CALL 229385 for a 256K SAM

or a

CALL 491529 for a 512K SAM

if your sams rom is not version 1 (20 for 2.0 rom or 30 for 3.0 rom) then
it is most likely that
there's no dos on the disk

I don't think your drive is worn out. if it was you would get errors like
Missing Disk (rubber belt worn or power suply no good)
Loading error (bad floppy disk or in the worst case drive head damaged)

hope this helps

Hello Roy.

The message NO DOS tells you that there is "no DOS" on the disk, so you canĀ“t
boot. If you have a DOS booted, the next possible message can be "NO DISK" also
if there is a disk in the slot. In this case try to switch them out and in
again
or try to press them a bit higher or deeper in the diskdrive, but carefully.
This helps mostly.
The question about a dead disk drive you can answer yourself if you take a look
what the diskdrive does if you press F9. Does it start to run? Can you hear
that
the disk is moving round? Goes the red light of the drive on and out?
If not you`re in a bad situation because original diskdrives are as seldom as
the SAM itself to buy.

May the might be with you!

Could do... er assuming that your disks used to have DOS on them? :) I
guess you must have at least one that does, otherwise you'd have noticed
by now.

My drive used to do that occasionally if I remember rightly... Try any
of these:

1. Poke open the drive door and blow into it, hard. Try it again. Used
to work sometimes.. gets rid of dust (...and hopefully doesnt replace it
with spit).

2. When you stick the disk in & press F9 and it does its whirring, put
your finger under the back of the disk & lift it up (in the drive)
This definately used to work, but maybe all my disks were bent.

3. Shake it. The Sam, the disk, everything. Never did me any harm.

Er... hope those really-untechnical tips help.

Sam Coupe wake up call

2000-09-09 Thread Roy Staines

Doing some belated spring cleaning, I and my son felt eager to set up the
Sam Coupe and have a play around. It hasn't been used for a few years and
when a software disk is put in and F9 is pressed I got error code 53 NO
DOS. Tried several disks and got the same, does that mean that the
internal disk drive has died (never woke up)?
