This is my pam config for ssh:
#%PAM-1.0
auth required pam_nologin.so

auth required pam_unix.so use_first_pass shadow
auth required pam_env.so # [1]

sessionoptional pam_lastlog.so # [1]
sessionoptional pam_motd.so # [1]
sessionoptional pam_mail.so standard noenv # [1]
sessionrequired pam_limits.so

password required pam_unix.so

Which is working for me. I can login from any client on the server using ssh, with
UIDs known on the server and UIDs known in the PDC.

What does auth.log say when you try to login? You can increase loging for winbind by
putting this in your pam:
auth sufficient pam_winbind.so debug

[Samba] Samba Locks Location

2003-06-05 Thread Brett Hales
I am trying to move the lock directory to another location. In my smb.conf I have the
below line.

 lock directory = /usr/local/samba/machine_name/var/locks

However when I try to start samba I get the following error.

[2003/06/06 16:03:13, 2] lib/interface.c:add_interface(81)
  added interface ip=150.207.3.6 bcast=150.207.3.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
[2003/06/06 16:03:13, 0] lib/pidfile.c:pidfile_create(93)
ERROR: can't open /usr/local/samba/var/locks/smbd.pid: Error was No such file or
directory

Do I need another directive in the smb.conf to tell samba where the smbd.pid file is.
Otherwise why is it not picking up the lock directory as specified.

Thanks,

Brett Hales

Re: [Samba] Re: Retry: RedHat, XFS, and ACL Support

2003-06-05 Thread Matt Wright
Hi,

I've been trying to do this compile as well (but on Debian) however it seems
that some of the acl functions have been moved from the acl libs to attr. I
can get Samba to compile by adding -lattr to the places in configure where
-lacl occur.

Regards,

Matt

PS. I haven't actually got samba 3 to recoginse my acl's on the drive once
it's compiled, not sure what's wrong but it's compiled and the ACL's work on
the disk as samba 2.2.x sees them.

Re: [Samba] samba newbie having trouble configuring samba on RH7.3...

2003-06-05 Thread Tori Williamson
Marv,

You do need to run configure for a source tarball... you just haven't found
the config script yet. :-) In the samba-2.2.8a directory, go into the
directory labeled "source". You'll find the configure script there.

My advice is, if this is the first time installing Samba, run your install
thusly:

#samba-2.2.8a > ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/samba
#samba-2.2.8a > make
#samba-2.2.8a > make install

The reason I suggest setting the prefix as /usr/local/samba and no other
config options, is that this will put samba in a singular space and allow
you time to monkey with it in a closed directory. Then when your comfortable
with samba and it's files and configurations, you can wipe the
/usr/local/samba dir (thus trashing ALL of the files) and run the configure
with WHATEVER path your heart desires.

My advice is something like this install:

#samba-2.2.8a >
./configure --prefix=/usr --configdir=/etc/samba --what-ever-other-config-op
tions-you-want
#samba-2.2.8a > make
#samba-2.2.8a > find /* > samba1
#samba-2.2.8a > make install
#samba-2.2.8a > find /* > samba2
#samba-2.2.8a > diff samba1 samba2 > samba-installed

Why the two find and diff statements? Well, you'll see that I offer /usr as
the prefix dir, you'r files will be scattered. Doing a find before AND after
the install and diffing the two find files will create a file (called
samba-installed) with the locations of all the samba files. quite handy.

If you don't feel comfortable with that, and want an easier way to manage
the install (and if necessary the UNinstall) of Samba, you can download the
latest samba SRPM file from Samba.org here:
http://us2.samba.org/samba/ftp/Binary_Packages/RedHat/SRPMS/samba-2.2.8a-1.s
rc.rpm

Just install rpm-build from the 7.3 RPMS, and after downloading the src.rpm,
run:
#dir > rpm -ivh samba-2.2.8a-1.src.rpm
then change to /usr/src/redhat/SPECS and edit the samba.spec file to make
the config changes you want. Then:
#SPECS > rpm -bb samba.spec
This will place the samba-common, samba-client, samba-server & samba-swat
RPMS in /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386 and you can install the latest samba
version from samba.org via RPM.

Lastly, I offer up the suggestion of obtaining "Using Samba" from O'Reilly &
Assc. A VERY handy book for samba admins of any level. And the latest
edition covers Samba 3. You can also do a google search for "samba redhat
HOWTO"

Good luck!

Tori

Re: [Samba] Samba as PDC with WinXP Clients -> headache ?

2003-06-05 Thread Leroy van Logchem
Hi,

I had the same problems you descripted but here it's all good now :)
Running samba 2.2.5 as PDC for 475+ WinXP clients, each using 6 shares
at least.

deadtime =120 and we have not had a complaint about lost drives for 3
days

So far so good...

during the investigations we found that even though win xp had
completely logged out (even turned off the maching in one case) the user
was still appearing in smbstatus
Same here last week.

# socket options = IPTOS_LOWDELAY TCP_NODELAY SO_SNDBUF=4096
SO_RCVBUF=4096

Got ya... change that to:

socket options = SO_KEEPALIVE TCP_NODELAY
read raw = Yes
write raw = Yes
And make sure your OS's tcp-stack tcp time wait interval is lowered:
On SunOS it's configured with ndd -set /dev/tcp :
TCP_CLOSE_WAIT_INTERVAL=3
On Linux it's configured with /etc/sysctl.conf / sysctl -p
net.ipv4.tcp_keepalive_time = 5000<-- Play with this and do netstat
-an | grep "WAIT" | wc -l (must be low)
net.ipv4.tcp_fin_timeout = 30

[Samba] File is opened read only

2003-06-05 Thread Nils Bansemir
Hi all,
I have a problem with the file permissions on our Samba server
(Version 2.2.8) with a program that we're using. This program want's to
save some configuration into the homedirectory of it's user. The problem
is that this program is opening this file read only, so it can save the
configuration.

[2003/06/05 11:51:14, 2] smbd/open.c:open_file(246)
  an opened file .rtdpricing read=Yes write=No (numopen=2)
[2003/06/05 11:51:14, 2] smbd/close.c:close_normal_file(229)
  an closed file .rtdpricing (numopen=1)

If you're opening this file manually with edit it is working fine.

[2003/06/05 11:49:46, 2] smbd/open.c:open_file(246)
  an opened file .rtdpricing read=Yes write=Yes (numopen=2)
[2003/06/05 11:49:46, 2] smbd/close.c:close_normal_file(229)
  an closed file .rtdpricing (numopen=1)

Is there any way to force Samba to open this file read and write able?

Thanks a lot for your help,
Nils

RE: [Samba] One way trust relationship between Win2k and Samba 2.x.x PDC

2003-06-05 Thread Khanh Tran
I'm sure this has been discussed before, but would it then be possible to
join a "real" NT4 or Win2k BDC to the Samba domain and establish the trust
relation from our other Win2k? Or does the trust relationship have to be
"registered" with the entire domain and therefore all the domain
controllers?

Not supported in Samba 2.2 (not properly anyway).

It is hoped that this will be clearly documented for Samba 3.0 (which
has existing support for win2k to trust us, and hopefully will ship with
support for samba 3.0 to trust win2k)

Re: [Samba] Samba as PDC with WinXP Clients -> headache!!

2003-06-05 Thread Mal Beaton
We have been doing some extensive work with samba2.2.3 and win xp sp1
and have experienced similar problems

Intermittantly users could not locate their roaming profiles on first
login in the morning. Sometimes second login would work sometimes not.

then at random intervals during the day they would lose their drives

the first thing we tried

deadtime = 1

that fixed the login in the morning problem and users seem to be happier
(no complaints)

but they were losing their network drives at irregular intervals
sometimes reconnecting straight away sometimes not

we changed it to

deadtime =120 and we have not had a complaint about lost drives for 3 days

during the investigations we found that even though win xp had
completely logged out (even turned off the maching in one case) the user
was still appearing in smbstatus

This was identified in an article sent to the samb lists about samba not
recognising win xp logoffs

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316740
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;323582
I havent tried these yet.

but for the users deadtime =120 seems to have assisted

let me know how you go

Alex King wrote:
I'm having the same problems as Daniel Zeiss, hence the message with the
same subject!
As is the case with Daniel, I'm having very unsatisfacory performance
with Samba as PDC and WinXP (Pro) clients.
Basically, XP machines seem to join the domain OK, but then fall off at
random, and tell me that no domain controler is available, without any
apparant network activity.
I'm using 2.2.8a, with "normal" encrypted passwords (no LDAP).

I have essentially the same setup at several sites. I'm not the first
point of contact at any of the sites, but unfortunately I'm responsible
for making samba work at all of them. Access to the sites (and direct
experience of the problems as opposed to user reports) is relatively
difficult. Also the different sites have different first-port-of-call
administrators, and probably very different usage patterns
At one site ("the good site") there are around 13 XP workstations no
other windows machines. I seldom hear of any problems at this site.
However I know the administrator here is routinely reinstalls XP (and
re-joins the domain) whenever there is a problem.
I've also heard that they sometimes have the "can't log in" problem, and
have solved it by re-joining the domain. I'm not sure exactly how
frequent this is because I'm not always told.
Historically most of the sites have been on 95/98, and most probably
still have a majority of 98 machines, but lately most of them also have
a few XP machines as well.
Again I am hamstrung by limited direct experience at these sites, but it
appears that the "no domain controler" error happens at these sites too.
Usually re-joining the domain solves this issue, but some clients seem
not to be able to join the domain at all, or only after repeated
attempts.
My setup runs a logon script, which syncs the workstation time and maps
certain shares ("NET USE... etc.") according to the user logged in.
The scripts are different according to the windows client architecture.
Win 95 script looks like:
NET TIME \\SERVER /YES /SET
NET USE H: /home
NET USE S: \\SERVER\STORAGE
NET USE W: \\SERVER\WEBSITE
...
(maps 11 drives)
WinNT and Win2K scripts are the same:
NET TIME \\SERVER /YES /SET
NET USE H: \\SERVER\alex
NET USE S: \\SERVER\STORAGE
NET USE W: \\SERVER\WEBSITE
...
(I assume XP appears as the 2K archetecture in the %a samba config
variable substitution)
We have a problem with some XP machines which seem to be partially
working... they log in but don't run the sripts. They map the home
drive as Z, but don't get any further
I really need to get these problems sorted, if anyone can offer any
general debugging advice please feel free. I have tried a few
times to go onsite and "sort it once and for all", spending many hours
on it searching google etc. but always hitting a brick wall. I've tried
increasing the log level, packet dumps etc, but never get anything
useful.

Set 'max open files' to a larger number. If you don't set it, the
default is 1. However, on many systems it will be set to the lower
of max open files or rlim_fd_max.

Your best option would be to recompile Samba as a 64-bit application
or upgraded to 2.2.8a.

I posted a patch to samba-technical back in January 2001 that would
allow you to set max open files to the *larger* of max open files or
rlim_fd_max instead of the smaller of the two settings.

This sounds like a bug I found in a few Lexmark drivers when operating
in RAW mode. Same bug occurred from win2k to win2k. The client's spooler
tries to continually ask for the timestamp on the printer (change_id)
but never updates it's local cache. I see a different driver fixed it
(in a later post) so i would guess it's probably anpther printer driver
issue.

Winbind in 2.2 doesn't obtain the sequence number in
a native mode AD domain correctly. You must use and LDAP
query to get the date. See the --with-*-ldap-hack in the
configure options to enable the LDAP lookup (or wait for 3.0).

Hi all,

Having a very specific problem here:

I have a working RedHat9 server running Samba 2.2.7 (the release that comes

with RH9), acting as a PDC/File Server to around 15 WinXP Pro client
workstations.

This all works nicely, apart from our accounting package, Sage Line 50,
which depends on its data being stored on a network share.

Previously, when the data was stored on a WinNT4 share, there was no
problem, several users could concurrently connect into the database and
work simultaneously.

Now, using samba, this isn't possible. Sage will only allow one user to log

in and access the DB at any one time. As soon as that user logs out, the
next user can log in. This isn't normal Sage behaviour.

I have found instances of people on google asking for help with very
similar problems (usually accounting packages and DBs - usually solutions
involving oplocks), but having tried all the suggestions I found, I haven't

found one that works.

Any help at this point would be very much appreciated, as I've got an
entire NT4 server dedicated to sharing out a few files for 15 users, and
I'm needing to decommission it for something else.

Many thanks in advance,

L

Re: [Samba] mount a windows FS to a linux box

2003-06-05 Thread Joel Hammer
This error is vaguely reminescent of a problem I used to get.
Make sure there are no circular symbolic links involved.
What does smbstatus show?
What do you see in your samba logs?
Joel

[Samba] Samba & Sage Line 50 Accounting

2003-06-05 Thread Louis Sabet

L

Do oplocks serve any purpose?
Why not disable them.

Re: [Samba] Limiting Users

2003-06-05 Thread Joel Hammer
Well, all I can really tell you is that the best thing I ever did was
to learn the bash shell and bash shell scripting. It takes a while,
but since my computer (linux) uses the bash shell, it is well worth
the effort. You could use any scripting language your computer supports.
Once you get the feel for scripting, then it wouldn't be too hard to use
samba's resources, like the variables passed when a user logs on and
smbstatus. And, learn about the preexec parameter.

[Samba] ERROR! Out of file structures

2003-06-05 Thread Frank.Heckes
Hi all,

I'm using SAMBA 2.0.7 (okay rather old, but I have to run it, because of support
matrix reasons) on a HP-UX 11.11 box (rp5470). From time to time I see the following
message:

ERROR! Out of file structures

Does anyone know how to get rid of this problem by setting an appropriate parameter.
Many thanks in advance.

Bye

Re: [Samba] Samba as PDC with WinXP Clients -> headache!!

2003-06-05 Thread Daniel Zeiss
Hi

In XP have you set the WINS server address?
Yes. It is set. Normal browsing is working fine.

I am running XP Pro with Samba 2.2.8a and its running fine after the
registry patch.
How did you set it up?
Are you using SP1?
How is the load on your Samba PDC when clients log on? Are you running a
domain?
Can you send me a copy of your registry in text files, so I can compare.

Thank you.

Daniel

[Samba] UPDATE.

2003-06-05 Thread Mr. Frank Williams
From: Mr. Frank Williams.
Eko Bank Nig,plc.
Lagos .
Tel:234-802-3192077

Dear Friend,

I know that you must have recieved the first
letter I sent to you by post, but if you have not, here comes a follow-upto the letter.

First I must seek for your understanding and
pray that God will give you the wisdom to
understand my problem and be in a position
to help as you will be surely blessed as you help.

I am Mr. Frank Williams,I am 46 Years old
and also an accountant with Eko Bank Nig PLC . I have a transaction which I think will
be of mutual benefit to both of us.
In my desire for a foreign partner with whom to do this transaction, I stumbled on
your contact from a business directory.

As an officer in accounts department of EBNP,
I discovered some amount of money while I was
auditing accounts for the 2003 financial year
which has been lying there for over 3 years.
On further inquiry, I discovered that this
money totalling about USD$21.5 Million (Seven Million five hundred thousand United
States Dollars) including accumulated interest belonged to one MR Michael Morgan , a
United State Nationale who lived here and died intestate with no beneficiary. This man
died through a plane crash of ADC airlines in 1998.

I would need your assistance to enable me prepare documents which will authenticate
that the money
belongs to you as the next of kin to MR Michael
Morgan and to enable you claim the money from the bank where my bank have moved the
money to.

I want to be assured of a safe account where the
money will be deposited pending my arrival. This
transaction is absolutely risk free with no illegal
complications,I have made all necessary arrangements
for a successful transaction as i know the details of
the account which you shall use to lodge claim as the
next of kin . Before this money is entrusted into
your care, there must be an agreement
that will be reached between us stating that:

1.BOTH PARTIES WILL NOT FOR ANY REASON CHEAT
EACH OTHER.
2.BOTH PARTIES WILL WORK TOGETHER TO SEE
THIS TRANSACTION THROUGH.
3.A HIGH DEGREE OF TRUST AND CONFIDENTIALITY
WILL BE APPLIED FOR THE SAKE OF OUR WORK.
4.I AND MY PARTNER WILL STRONGLY BE BY YOUR SIDE AS YOU
CLAIM THIS FUND AND I AND MY PARTNER WILL ARRAGE AN
ATTORNEY(LAWYER)WHO WILL WORK ON YOUR BEHALF TO GET THE
NECESSARY PAPERS NEEDED FOR A SMOOTH TRANSACTION.
5.YOU WILL NOT DISAPPEAR WITH OUR FUND AFTER YOU
HAVE CLAIMED IT.
6.DISBURSEMENT RATIO WILL BE 70 FOR ME AND MY
COLLEAGUE,15 FOR YOU, 5% WILL BE DONATED TO CHARITY,WHILE
10% WILL TAKE CARE OF OUR MUTUAL EXPENCES.

There is need for you to respond to this offer
immediately as the money will be moved to another commercial bank and the government
of my country
have concluded plans to apply the money into
arms procurement to project wars and unrest in
African continent from that bank.I must let you know that a high degree of trust is
required and also we will like to use our own share to go into any lucrative business
with your help/assistance.

Awaiting your urgent response now.

Yours Faithfully
Mr. Frank Williams.

[Samba] Samba as PDC with WinXP Clients -> headache!!

2003-06-05 Thread Alex King

I've tried
increasing the log level, packet dumps etc, but never get anything
useful.

[Samba] Re: Retry: RedHat, XFS, and ACL Support

2003-06-05 Thread Brett Harris
I must have made a mistake and clicked on a different file then I thought
in windows. I was just trying to illustrate how the uid's and gid's show
up under the windows security tab and not the domain mappings.

If you check the acl's under linux it correctly maps domain names and
groups from the uid's and gid's. This says to me that the filesystem is
working properly with acl's and winbind is working properly, but samba is
not mapping the acl's correctly. I would also hypothesise that this is
the reason if you try to give a user or group access to a file it does not
accept it.

Any idea why samba would not be correctly mapping acl's when I configured
samba with acl support (./configure --with-acl-support)?

[Samba] Re: SPOOLSV and XP PRO

2003-06-05 Thread Ryan Beisner (home)
Just an FYI:

I narrowed it down to a single printer (HP LJ 8150DN), where the default
XP driver caused a runaway SMBD process (at like 90% CPU usage). Upon
installing the official HP driver, this problem stopped.

Simply deleting the printer from XP's config would end the problem too.

RE: [Samba] Joining windows 2003 server with samba 3.0 alpha 2.4 + advice

2003-06-05 Thread Philippe Dhont (Sea-ro)
I fixe it
Client use spnego had to be off (thnx andrew, i remembered your mail
yesterday)

Now, could someone please give me a little bit advise ?
It's for the following
This is now only in testphase.
I installed windows2003 server as PDC
I installed samba 3.0.0 alpha 2.4
This should come in our networks, the win2003 on a site and the samba on
another site and on another site also another samba.
So i will have one win2003 PDC and two samba's, connected via phone link and
radio link.
I want to install the samba's so that IF the link fails, the samba's can
authenticate access so that people on the different sites can work further
with there files.
How should i best handle this ?
If i use winbind and the line breaks, nobody can work further on the other
sites because the samba's can't access the PDC where they rely on for
authentication.
I saw something about ADS ? Is that a solution ?
I appreciate any advice i get.

And another question, where can i find information about all the parameters
that are used in samba 3 ? (can see them with testparm -s -v)

Thnx & GreetZ!

Ph.

Yo, thnx for the support!
I installed samba 3.0 alpha2.4.
Strange enough i could compile it now --with-pam without any problems so
that is done also.
The new net command is cool, i love it!
Finally a tool to sets the time easely also!
So i tried again to join the 2003 domain and this is what i get:

lnx:~# net join -U Administrator

Samba 3.0 joins as an active directory member, and therefore avoids some
(but not all) of these painful hoops.

Winbind authentication is done to the PDC, which must be connected at the
time. There is a project around to cache this information in PAM, but there
are other issues there (getting the user list etc).

DR. BEN UZO PhD (UNN), MNIM, FCA
Financial Controller & Contract Award Committee Chairman (NEPA)
Dear Sir,
REQUEST FOR URGENT/CONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP.
I am Dr. Ben Uzo he Financial Controller and Contract Award Committee Chairman in the
National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) in Lagos, Nigeria. My colleagues have
assigned me to seek for assistance of a reliable foreigner through whom we can
transfer the sum of US$38,600,000.00 (Thirty-Eight Million, Six Hundred Thousand U.S.
Dollars) which arose from the deliberate over-inflated contract value for the General
expansion of the Kanji Dam Hydro Station on behalf of National Electric Power Autho

rity (NEPA) for increased energy generation to Nigeria and some other West African
countries. The contract was awarded in 1998 during the General Sani Abacha regime to
an expatriate firm with the consideration of 10% commission agreement on the total
contract value of US$386,000,000. The contract has been completed and the contractor
has long been paid, we are now left with this US$38,600,000 representing the 10% our
own share as agreed presently in the Federal Government account. The Current favorable
political/economic climate in this country now presented an opportunity for this money
to be transferred out of the country.

Our contact in the Federal Ministry of Finance have given us a go ahead advice to
begin the process of the remittance, hence we have set in motion the machinery for the
take off of this transaction and further action will commence immediately we hear from
you. We have agreed that after the transfer of the money into your account, you shall
be entitled to 30% of the total amount transferred, while the remaining 70% will be
for us. We decided to give you this percentage in order to motivate you and also to
let you feel satisfied at the end of this transaction.
The nature of your business is not particularly relevant for the success of this
transaction. All we require is your willingness to co-operate and assurance that our
own share will be given to us when this money is transferred into your account. All
necessary precautions have been taken to ensure a no risk situation on the sides of
both parties and it is believed that the conclusion of this transaction will not last
more than 8 working days.
Since we have no knowledge of business, our plan is to invest this money into Real
Estate, Stocks and we can also invest in some other profitable business in your
country based on your advice because many of our years has been spent as civil
servant, and we may likely resign from government service to private business after
this money is transferred into your account.
Please note that this business is strictly confidential and must not be
disclosed to a third party. This is necessary to avoid disclosure that may jeopardize
the transaction. Finally, if this proposal is acceptable to you, or if you have any
questions, feel free to contact me immediately on the above e-mail address , you
should also send to me your private e-mail address, telephone number and fax number
for easy and confidential communication. I will oblige you with further information if
so required

I could be wrong, but I think you should not have / in the name of the
share (ie, the section should be [space] and not [/space].

[Samba] Unable to map to samba share

2003-06-05 Thread Stromsland, Jon
I just installed the Samba ver 2.2.8a 64 bit package on a Sun Blade 2000
running Solaris 8. Everything installed OK and then I configured it using
SWAT according to the IDEAS 3D software implementation guide and created a
share called "/space".
The problem is as follows:
When I logon to a Windows 2000 or NT client I can see the samba share but
when I click on it or try to map a drive to it I get the error shown in the
attached SAMBA.doc word file.
I have also included the "smb.conf" file and the output of the samba
"testparm" command.

Dow anyone know what the problem is?

RE: [Samba] I am totaly frustrated running samba

2003-06-05 Thread Ow Mun Heng
I'm not sure about your problem but I note that you have 'Global Parameter
map to guest in service section"

if you wish to enable anonymous access to the box, you need to move this
line from the "share definition" to the Global Section. (I think RedHat made
a mistake in their default smb.conf file)

Well, I hate to admit it, but I use Norton AntiVirus. I have played
long and hard at getting the corporate edition running on a Samba
domain. Unfortunately, no amounts of tweaking with Wine was able to get
it to work properly. I've had to run a vmware session with the Norton
AV installed on a w2k vm. As for day-to-day linux virus protection, I
use host.all ;).

[Samba] Printing isses with LPRng

2003-06-05 Thread Nick McCulloch
Hi,

I am having issue with Printing using LPRng.
Below is a list of hardware details and the issues I am experiencing:

Server: HP Netserver LH II
Dual Pentium Pro X 300 Mhz
265 Meg Ram

I am running Red Hat Linux 9.0 fresh install
Kernel Version 2.4.20-8
Samba Version 2.2.7a-security-rollup-fix
LPRng latest version.

This is box dedicated for printing only.
I have 64 Printer objects installed on this server.
The volume of printing is high but the configuration, but the
configuration should handle it.

Issues:

The major symptom is that printing just stops until we reboot the
machine by hard resetting it.
The consistent error message in smbd.log is the following but this is
written for every print job (or close to it):

Failed to setup RT_SIGNAL_LEASE handler
[2003/06/05 11:19:07, 0]
smbd/oplock_linux.c:linux_init_kernel_oplocks(287)

The symptoms of the box seizing is that you can ping the machine.
Logging in to the console is either so slow as to be unuseable or no
result in logging in at all.

/var/log/messages just stops logging data.

Thanks in advance

Regards

Nick McCulloch

Just went through something like you describe. It was the permissions
in my case. Go to log level 5 or higher and see what gets listed. The
ownership of the files was my problem.

Not supported in Samba 2.2 (not properly anyway).

It is hoped that this will be clearly documented for Samba 3.0 (which
has existing support for win2k to trust us, and hopefully will ship with
support for samba 3.0 to trust win2k)

It does - it's former incarnation exists for the non-smbpasswd backends,
and has had a major overhaul in the transition to 3.0

But the passdb.tdb file is in the 'private dir' (where smbpasswd is
kept).

[Samba] DOS programs unable to create files on Samba 2.2.7a

2003-06-05 Thread Arne R. van der Heyde
We have a few old DOS programs which, when run under Windows 2000 is a
DOS full screen session are unable to write files on our Samba server.
These programs (the "brief" editor, and the "tango" CAD package) are
able to write to local files on the Windows 2000 system. I set Samba

As you can see, "Operation not supported" is returned when Samba tried
to create the file. Unfortunately this does not give me much of a clue
as to why the Operation is not supported. I suspect that the mode/flags
may provide a clue but I have not been able to determine what they mean
in this function. Hopefully someone familiar with their meaning will be
able to tell me why this file create was rejected. Also, is there a
Samba setting which would allow me to work around this and allow these
old DOS programs write to the Samba server?

I would check next if name resolution is working (DNS/WINS). Also, what

[Samba] log in problem

2003-06-05 Thread Wei Wang
Hi, everyone,

I just installed lastest Samba server on two SGI Octanes in my lab
running IRIX6.5.19. Both servers have the same configuration. From one
of our lab PCs, I can log on to both servers without any problem.
However, another PC in the lab can only log on to one of the Samba
server. Usually, on the PC, after you click on the samba server, you
will be prompted for username and password. I can get to this step, but
after I entered both information, that window does not get away. For
example, to log into one of the samba server named PLEXUS, I enter:
Username: root
Password: **
The log in window will flash and become
Username: PLEXUS/root
Password: **
And I couldn't log on and see the shares on PLEXUS

So, what is the problem that causes this? Thanks a lot!

Wei

I found a workaround to the above problem. For 9x/ME clients I use the Adobe

me an option to overwrite pdfprinter.PPD. If I choose Yes to overwrite,
everything works fine. I hope this is helpful to anyone who might experience

In smb.conf [globals] set:

log level = 5
log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log
max log size = 0

Then access the samba server from your MS Windows machine. You will need
to examine the logs (big log file!) what is going on and what is failing.
This is really the most productive way to investigate you problem.

[Samba] Unable to Log into the PDC.

2003-06-05 Thread Kenneth D. Haas
Hello I have been bashing my head against a wall with this issue. I had
decided rebuild my server with a newer version of Linux and copied all the
config files to another hard drive and reinstalled the Linux OS. I have been
able to get everything back up and running accept the ability to log into
the server from my windows workstation. When I log on I get the error
"Password Incorrect". I am able to connect to some shares via direct URL
entry but I have to set the SMB.CONF file for that share to have public
access to yes.

Every other share that does not have this switch on returns Not Logged in. I
am including the smb.conf file witch was working fine on my previous server,
so I am confused?

any help would be great.

Thanks

This can prevent someone from logging on twice,
limit them to specific hours, from conencting to

In addition, one can set "valid users" so that only

You need to install the bestbits acls package libraries. The Red Hat
paackages are called: acls and acls-devel (possibly without the 's'.

The environment that's running the script probably doesn't have a

[Samba] "name_query failed to find name" when using broadcastaddress

2003-06-05 Thread patti c.
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to set up a Windows XP Pro client to connect to a Samba
server (version 2.2.8) on a Redhat 8.0 linux box, but have been having
trouble for the past 3 days. I have gone through Troubleshooting Samba
at [http://us1.samba.org/samba/ftp/docs/Samba24Hc13.pdf] but I can't
figure out how to fix the problem. I suspect that the broadcast address
may not be the same on both boxes, but how do I set that in Windows XP?
The problem may be something else, so I'll try to be as specific as
possible:

The server ip is 10.0.1.201, named fizzlebox
The windows ip is 10.0.1.2, named studio

My smb.conf:

*
[global]
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
socket options = TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY SO_SNDBUF=8192
SO_RCVBUF=8192
preserve case = no
domain master = yes
hosts allow = 127.0.0.1 10.0.1. studio
encrypt passwords = yes
wins support = true
netbios name = FIZZLEBOX
server string = Samba PDC running %v
workgroup = FIZZLE
os level = 75
security = user
max log size = 50
domain logons = yes
log level = 3
logon script = netlogon.bat

[homes]
comment = Fizzle Samba Home Directories
read only = no
browseable = no

[netlogon]
path = /home/netlogon
read only = yes
write list = patti

[public]
path = /home/fizzle
valid users = patti user root
read only = no
browseable = yes

***

- Both XP and Linux are able to ping each other by ip and hostname
- ifconfig on Linux shows 10.0.1.255 as the broadcast address, mask as
255.255.255.0
- ipconfig on XP shows NodeType = broadcast, subnet mask as
255.255.255.0
- "smbclient -L fizzle" is able to list shares, as well as connect to a
share while on the Linux server
- "nmblookup -U 127.0.0.1 __SAMBA__" works fine, as does the same
command with FIZZLEBOX
- "nbtstat -n" on XP lists both STUDIO and FIZZLE

- This is where it goes wrong: "nmblookup -B 10.0.1.255 fizzlebox"
returns "name_query failed to find name fizzlebox"; same happens when
querying with "studio"
- "nbtstat -A 10.0.1.201" on XP returns "Host not found"

Also on the Linux box:
- All users and machines have been added, passworded, and smbpassworded
- Read, write, execute permissions have been set on all relevant folders

On the Windows box:

- When trying to connect through My Computer -> Properties -> Computer
Name -> change Domain to FIZZLE , I get "A domain controller for the
domain FIZZLE could not be contacted"
- Internet Connection Firewall is disabled
- Applied WinXP_SignOrSeal.reg from samba.org
- Local Security Settings: most Domain member settings are disabled
- NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled
- lmhosts file:

***
10.0.0.201 fizzlebox #PRE #DOM:DOMAIN-NAME
10.0.0.201 "FIZZLE \0x1b" #PRE

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance!

Password encryption will have to be on on the clients to join the domain.

> and use the LDAP database and migrate the passwords stored

You will have to migrate passwords into samba while it is using
clear-text passwords (see 'update encrypted'), on a local file, then
once you have had your accounts migrated into smbpasswd file, you can
migrate them into LDAP easily.

You need to have encrypted passwords stored somewhere for this to work,
but that doesn't mean you can put everything in LDAP.

[Samba] Spurious auth failures with 2.5S3 + wb_ntlm

2003-06-05 Thread steve b
Greetings:

I am in the process of setting up ntlm-based user authentication with
Squid. Following the various instructions available in the FAQ and on the
mailing list, I have what appears to be a functioning setup: I can use
`wbinfo' to authenticate successfully, and Squid works as configured,
logging my authenticated username into the logs. However, after what
appears to be a random amount of time into a browsing session, I begin
to get authentication failures that cause a "Login" window to pop up.
Restarting winbindd with debugging turned on shows a string of successful
credential checks, followed by failures:

[2003/06/04 10:14:29, 5]
nsswitch/winbindd_pam.c:winbindd_pam_auth_crap(213)
NTLM CRAP authentication for user [MYGROUP]\[STEVE] returned
NT_STATUS_OK (PAM: 0)

... a bunch of these, followed by a string of:

[2003/06/04 10:16:41, 2]
nsswitch/winbindd_pam.c:winbindd_pam_auth_crap(213)
NTLM CRAP authentication for user [MYGROUP]\[STEVE] returned
NT_STATUS_WRONG_PASSWORD (PAM: 4)

What's strange is that a page will almost load up to completion, but then
things will grind to a halt with a password prompt when trying to load up
a random image on the page.

I am running 2.5S3 and Samba 2.2.8a on a Solaris 8/SPARC machine. The PDC
is running Windows 2000+SP3. I have witnessed this behaviour occuring
with IE 5.5 & 6 running on Win98, 2000 and XP.

Relevant parts of the configuration files:

== squid.conf ==
auth_param ntlm program /usr/local/squid/libexec/wb_ntlmauth
auth_param ntlm children 5
auth_param ntlm max_challenge_reuses 0
auth_param ntlm max_challenge_lifetime 2 minutes

== smb.conf ==
workgroup = MYGROUP
password server = MYPDC
security = domain
winbind uid = 1-2
winbind gid = 1-2
winbind use default domain = yes

$ ./wbinfo -a MYGROUP\\steve%password
plaintext password authentication succeeded
challenge/response password authentication succeeded

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can easily turn up the debug
level on winbindd to capture more detail if it'll help.

Thank you,
Steve

[Samba] Codepage inconsistencies

2003-06-05 Thread Ademar de Souza Reis Jr.
Hello.

I'm having a lot of trouble trying to mount a share
from a NT4.0 (US_english) machine using samba-2.2.8a.

When I mount the share using samba, somehow the 'õ' and 'ã'
characters are displayed as 'o' and 'a'.
(other western chars such as á,é,ó,ç,etc are ok, I have problems
only with 'ã' and 'õ').

It's interesting to note that:

  - Win98se can mount the share without this problem.
  - I can use samba to mount shares from other samba servers and from
win98se machines without this problem as well.

So I guess it's just a matter of using the right parameters when mounting
the share, but:

  - Using mount -t smbfs -o codepage=cp850,iocharset=iso8859-1...
doesn't work.
  - I've tried codepage=850, codepage=437, codepage=1252, and a
lot of other possible values I could find for both codepage and
iocharset parameters, but none fixed the problem.

I don't know what else to try.. I read somewhere that windows has a
distinction between OEM codepage and ANSI codepages, but nothing
explaining exactly what is being used or how to make a conversion
between them...

Does anyone know how to debug this problem?

BTW, the default locale in the NT4 server is set as "U.S"
(regional settings in the control panel). If I set it to "Brasil",
then I can mount the partition without problems. But I can't do
that because I have other programs running in the server that
depend on the US_English setting :(

Thanks in advance for any hint.

[Samba] Winbind Cache not updating

2003-06-05 Thread Tom Dickson
I'm running Samba 2.2.5 on Redhat 7.3.

The issue I'm seeing (besides Domain Local Groups not being seen by winbind)
is that winbind is not getting new users from the Domain Controller (windows
2000 native mode).

For example:

wbinfo --sequence(gives 43)

Add user on the DC (user is bob, so NATIVEDOMAIN+bob should now appear in
getent passwd)

getent passwd doesn't show bob, neither does wbinfo -u.

wbinfo --sequence still gives 43.

Am I missing something? Everything else works, but it won't see the new
user. Is there a way to force winbind to get a new list of users from the DC
without losing the SID->UID mappings?

[Samba] winpopup

2003-06-05 Thread Solymos Péter
Greetings,

got some winpopup probs. Sending goes okay, and I'd like to get an
xmessage window by receiving. Thus, I added a line like this to the
[global] section in /etc/samba/smb.conf:

   message command = /bin/sh -c '/opt/scripts/winpopup.sh %m %f' &

The invoked script (/opt/scripts/winpopup.sh) looks like this:
-
#!/bin/sh
#$1 is the name of the sending machine, %m
#$2 is the file where samba saves the message, %f
echo "" >> $2 #appends a blank line to the message
echo $1 >> $2 #appends the name of the sending machine
xmessage -center -file $2 #pops up a window with the whole thing
rm $2 #removes the message file
-
Prob is that by receiving a message, sender machine says "sent OK", but
nothing happens at all. Any ideas? (file permissions are okay, script is
working when invoked from command line)

BTW I emerged the linpopup package, and tried it out as suggested:

   message command = /usr/bin/linpopup "%f" "%m" %s; rm %s

This way the message arrives at linpopup, but I have to run it manually
to be able to read it. Some kind of lin-doesn't-pop-up. ÷)

Suggestions?

[Samba] Printers and Faxes folder

2003-06-05 Thread Ashley Burt
We are in the process of uploading drivers to the samba server. Everything
seems to be working but it is very slow. When you browse to the Printers
and Faxes folder it takes a good 30 - 60 seconds to see the printers. I
have also noticed that when you try to send a print job you seem to get the
same delay.Below is what I am assuming to be a logged event related to
this problem. File browsing works great and this is a VERY powerful system
so I wouldn't expect it to be related to the load on the machine. Before
this change we used to install the drivers on each client machine. When it
was set up this way there were no speed problems.

[Samba] Can you use winbind and be a PDC at the same time?

2003-06-05 Thread Glenn Arnold
Here is the scenario I would like to integrated samba into my old NT 4.0
domain, but at the same time I would like to create a new Samba Domain
to migrate everybody too eventually. I have 100 new machines to install
this summer and would like to add them to the new samba domain instead
of the NT 4.0 domain. The reason I do not want to move everybody at
once to Samba Domain is I have 300 W2K & XP machines that I have to
recreate machine accounts, so I would have to manually go to every
machine to change there domain to the samba domain. Also, I would like
to test this out for a while to make sure Samba meets our needs. Which
I pretty confident it will, but I will admit Linux and Samba is not my
strong points, but I am getting better everyday! Plus, the cautious
approach will allow me to win senior management approval. Is it
possible use Winbind to make Samba Server a member of NT Domain, but be
Samba PDC for a different domain? It will probably not work, but I am
not a Samba expert, so I thought I get some input from this list with a
lot more experience;-)

Thanks for your help\

[Samba] Messy Authentication

2003-06-05 Thread Mike Babnick
Hello everyone.

I started life as a router and switch geek so please excuse my ignorance.

I have been reading from various sources about LDAP, Winbind and the
security=?? parameter in the smb.conf file but can't quite figure out how
to clean up my authentication. I would be grateful if someone could steer
my reading efforts in the right direction. Here is what I have going on
and what I am trying to do.

Currently, I have two Windows NT PDC boxes, two Samba PDC boxes, and a
number of non-Domain Samba boxes. In order to get Windows NT domain users
authenticated on my Samba boxes, I put a "net use" command in their domain
login script. I don't want to try and keep an identical list of usernames
and password on the Samba box so I use a generic account for everyone to
use. The problem is, the credentials get sent out plain text.

Ex: net use r: \\sambBox\shareName myPassword /user:sambaUser /persistent:no

I checked that this is in plain text by doing a packet capture. Anyway, I
don't know a better way to do it.

I will soon be putting into place a really big Samba box (for my outfit
anyway) that all users in all domains are going to use. So I will have all
these domain login scripts firing up all over the place doing generic,
plain text logins.

Any advice on how to tackle this problem would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Mike

oplocks are usually on in both Windows and Samba. In Samba
you can turn them off per share or file or globally in the
smb.conf. In Windows you can only turn them off globally
in the registry.

[Samba] Re: Looking for answers....

2003-06-05 Thread David Collier-Brown -- Customer Engineering
[Redirected to the general samba list]

One of the things which Samba provides is a facility
to run a "preexec" script before allowing a user to connect
to a directory, and refuse to make the conenction if
the script returns a non-zero result.
This can prevent someone from logging on twice,
limit them to specific hours, from conencting to
the wrong directory and so on.
In addition, one can set "valid users" so that only
the owner of a directory can connect to it.
Of course, the students then just copy their work to
floppies and pass them around, something that
Samba can't prevent (;-))

They also are needing some specific group based login scripts. For

If you can do these things with the current release of Samba, can you

Dear Thomas,

thanks for your answer.

for XP you need to patch the registry in order to cooperate with a Samba
PDC.
that is exactly what I have done and tried to explain with my words:

> They were told to do the reg hack "requiresignorseal" = 0, deactivate
> encryption (for client/server) change to use "LM and NTLM".

I would love to hear some more specific ideas like:

> Can you help?
> How can I debug this?
Because Google doesnt tell more than I have read. I am trying to solve
this problem now for 2 whole days. There is a chance that the solution
is very very simple and I am blind for it now and that the solution is
too complex that nobody here on the list has an idea.
I am praying for the first. :-)
