[Samba] Strange Printing Problems
Hi, I've got a small network with a few Windows XP machines. I'm running into a problem where I can can print but others cannot. For me, everything works great and as expected. However, for the others, they seem to have intermittent problems where Samba complains with multiple lines such as the following: Jul 17 22:02:37 chung smbd[472]: [2003/07/17 22:02:37, 0] rpc_client/cli_spoolss_notify.c:spoolss_connect_to_client(91) Jul 17 22:02:37 chung smbd[472]: connect_to_client: unable to connect to SMB server on machine ZEUS. Error was : SUCCESS - 0. Does anybody have any idea what is going on? The client machines are all Windows XP Pro. The printer is being driven by CUPS and the test pages print fine from both the CUPS administrative interface and my Windows test pages go through fine. The only difference between myself and the other users on this unix box is that my account is part of the wheel group. Here's my smb.conf file: # Samba config file created using SWAT # from 10.0.1.239 (10.0.1.239) # Date: 2003/07/16 18:41:23 # Global parameters [global] netbios name = CAMELLIA server string = Samba Server encrypt passwords = Yes lanman auth = No printing = cups printcap name = cups load printers = yes [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/spool/samba printable = yes printer admin = root, @printadmins Here's my cups printers.conf file: # Printer configuration file for CUPS v1.1.18 # Written by cupsd on Thu Jul 17 01:40:14 2003 Info Lexmark E210 on USB Location SF Home DeviceURI usb:/dev/ulpt0 State Idle Accepting Yes JobSheets none none QuotaPeriod 0 PageLimit 0 KLimit 0 This is a freebsd 4.8 machine. RE: [Samba] Samba 3.0.0beta3: Problem looking up SID of root
Interestingly, I have just reinstalled beta2 from source, and I get the same problem, except looking up the uid of the root SID with wbinfo -S gives 0, which I believe is the correct result. wbinfo -s still fails, and I still get the unresolved SID when viewing from Windows. - Paul Paul Eggleton wrote on Friday, 18 July 2003 1:53 p.m.: > Hi all, > > I have just installed Samba 3.0.0 beta 3 on RH9, after uninstalling > beta 2 (but keeping the smb.conf file the same). [Samba] Samba3 PDC with LDAP
Dear All, I still cannot get Samba3 (beta3) to work as PDC with LDAP backend. I still encounter the problem of having to join an XP workstation two times in succession before the join is successful. This does not happen on Samba2.2.8a. For both Samba 2.2.8a and samba3 beta i have workstation accounts added directly to ldap (via add-machine-script) without adding a corresponding entry in /etc/passwd. Same script used (except that the LDAP schemas are different). I have read the Samba docs a few times (for Samba3) but I still cannot figure out why the following (extracted from the samba log) exists: [2003/07/18 11:47:42, 2] lib/smbldap.c:smbldap_search_suffix(1056) smbldap_search_suffix: searching for:[(&(uid=vaio$)(objectclass=sambaSamAccount))] [2003/07/18 11:47:42, 0] passdb/pdb_ldap.c:ldapsam_add_sam_account(1458) User 'vaio$' already in the base, with samba attributes [2003/07/18 11:47:42, 0] rpc_server/srv_samr_nt.c:_api_samr_create_user(2326) could not add user/computer vaio$ to passdb. Check permissions? (This happens when the XP joined the domain the first time, which failed). May I ask for anyone who has successfully used Samba3 beta as PDC with Openldap to help? I'd be very much appreciated also if someone can point me to documents somewhere which I can read further on this. Thanks in advance! Chee Wai __ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! [Samba] patch: smbclient lost some files
Dear developers, I found a problem that 'smbclient' loses some files when it's creating a tar ball. A patch attached this message is for samba 2.2.8a and fixes this problem. Would you please check it? I think there is a protocol mismatch with Windows 2000 at cli_list_new() in libsmb/clilist.c (FIND FIRST2/FIND NEXT2). Samba assumes that 'Last Name Offset' response field is points to - the first octet of FileName field of the last file/directory entry. But responses from Windows 2000 points to - the first octet of the last file/directory entry. As result, smbclient sets 'mask' incorrectly and Windows 2000 seems to fail resuming the transaction and lost some files. As far as I read 'CIFS technical reference', I think Samba is correct. But I think we need a working around for this protocol mismatch. *** Problem: smbclient loses some files when it is creating a tar ball. [Samba] Samba 3.0.0beta3: Problem looking up SID of root
Hi all, I have just installed Samba 3.0.0 beta 3 on RH9, after uninstalling beta 2 (but keeping the smb.conf file the same). I am having a problem with resolving the SID of root. I have "admin users = Administrator" set on the single share I have set up so that Administrator performs as root. Looking at a directory created in the share by Administrator on the Windows client, which on the Samba server is owned by root, Windows reports that it has an owner of the following unresolved SID: S-1-5-21-2120923204-611296470-4252591782-1000 Using wbinfo on the Samba server: [EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# wbinfo -S S-1-5-21-2120923204-611296470-4252591782-1000 10001 [EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# wbinfo -s S-1-5-21-2120923204-611296470-4252591782-1000 Could not lookup sid S-1-5-21-2120923204-611296470-4252591782-1000 If I run "getent passwd" there are lots of winbind-mapped entries, but none for uid 10001. So it seems that it is the uid mapping for root is broken in 3.0.0 beta 3, unless I have somehow made a mistake in the upgrade. I am positive this was working fine with my beta 2 installation - I could look at a folder on the share from Windows and it would display MACHINENAME\root, not an unresolved SID. I have tried deleting the winbind idmap tdb file but it doesn't help the situation. Cheers, Paul - Paul Eggleton Ph:+64-9-4154790 Software Developer Fax: +64-9-4154791 CJN Technologies Ltd. [Samba] Windows XP Picture and Fax Viewer Rotate-Function does notwork on Samba Shares
Hi there, I am facing a problem when rotating a picture with the Windows XP built in picture and fax viewer. Whenever I try to rotate a picture from a samba share the viewer application tells me that it is not able to save the file. Maybe there is some problem with filelocking as it seems to be kept open by the viewer while it writes the rotated version back to the same file. Am I doing something wrong or is there a solution. Turning off op-locking in Windows XP does not work. Playing around with samba file locking options neither worked. My samba version is 2.2.5 running on linux (kernel 2.4.21). [Samba] Joining samba to AD domain with a non-admin user
I need help to resolve this issue. I saw that Andrew put a patch by Antti to enable users without full admin access to join samba into an AD domain. I am playing with it and always get "Insufficient access". Using the same user, I can join a Windows box into the domain just fine. The user is a member of "domain users", but not "domain admins". I can use a user in "domain admins" to join the AD domain fine too. I tried with beta3, and it's the same as alpha24 and alpha21 (a21 did not have Antti's patch). So my question is, is this supported, or broken, or am I using it wrong? The failure happens during ldap_add_s called from ads_add_machine_acct(). I do kinit before the "net ads join" command. However I haven't found where the kerberos ticket was used before the failure although the ticket does make a difference. To the best of my knowledge, we aren't using WINS. I don't see a particular need for it when DNS is available (but I may be mistaken - perhaps this is the problem?). The Windows machines that I am using to connect to the Samba machine are running Windows 2000 Server SP3 and have static IPs. RE: [Samba] write_socket: Error writing 4 bytes to socket 5: ERRNO=Connection reset by peer
Hi Paul, This is another report I came across that indicates this may be a naming service problem, as you mentioned in your bug description: http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/3/151/2002/11/150/10253550/ Perhaps we can compare configs. I'm running bind for DNS and have "wins support = yes" on the samba3 pdc to run a WINS server. I was not pushing down through dhcp a WINS server IP or node type (nor was one hard coded in each client), but I just set that and I'll let you know if that makes a difference. Are you setting a WINS server on each client machine or through dhcp ? RE: [Samba] Minor problem with CUPS printing.
Kevin, I have that same message on my win2k machine. I can print, and all is fine. One of the points, is that if you double click on the printer folder, the printers inside that folder do not give you that error. The only ones that I get that error from is the ones that are on the same page as the shares. Re: [Samba] authenticate from /etc/passwd
For easy reference, the registry changes are as follows. [Samba] idmap problems with Samba 3.0 beta3
Hi! With Samba 3.0 beta 2, I could use "idmap" Windows-to-Unix mappings. I could run "pdbedit -a " to add a Windows account and Samba would automatically acquire a UID using OpenLDAP as the backend. However, with the same configuration file, Samba 3.0 beta 3 simply doesn't query the OpenLDAP directory about "sambaUnixIdPool" object class, and limits to look for a directory entry with a "uid" matching the username specified as parameter in the "pdbedit" command. What am I doing wrong? What has changed since beta 2? The announcement talks about changes in mapping between SID and UID, but, as in the past, the documentation is scarce and somewhat confusing. I haven't been able to track any changes to this. Any ideas? Thanks! -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

I'm running RedHat 8.0 with samba-2.2.7-5.8.0 (installed from RedHat distribution) When I use cpio to write a backup (> 2GB) to a smbfs filesystem, I get the error: File size limit exceeded I get the same error when I linux copy (cp) a file (> 2GB) from a Linux ext3 filesystem to the smbfs filesystem. The smbfs filesystem is mounted from a Windows 2000 Professional workstation. After experiencing the problem, I installed an NFS client on the Windows 2000 Professional workstation (for testing purposes). Everything works with NFS, but I want to make it work with samba. Re: [Samba] Question on use of a username map file andsecurity=domain interactions ?
Hi ken, issue is that mapping continues to happen, so what you see is the following: ntusername wsmith gets mapped to unix 'smith'; now the smith username is used to continue parsing thru the user map file, and matches smith on the right side, so he gets finally mapped to jsmith on the left. In other words, we parse thru the entire map file, and continue mapping until there are no more right side matches... So for your issue, for instance, if you reversed the names in your mapfile: jsmith=smith smith=wsmith I think you would be ok. he would come in as nt user smith, get mapped to jsmith, and jsmith doesn't have another rightside match. Okay okay - forgive me for being a whiney itchbay. But the fix was (when discussing *nix systems) quite counter intuitive ... So, since I was headed out to lunch, I went ahead and rebooted the server. Lo and behold it all appears to work now. Correctly even. RE: [Samba] Samba 2.2.8a/winbindd - 2K Domain users passwordchallenged
I know it's been less than a day but I'm kind of surprised that I haven't gotten an answer on this one way or the other ... so let me ask a simpler question: Are winbind served users of a Linux machine supposed to have access to the samba shares served by that Linux machine? If so, please provide sample smb.conf's (if they differ from mine below) and pam.d/* files. As my users only need access to the samba shares, and not login access, I'm hesitant to change any /etc/pam.d/ file aside from /etc/pam.d/samba ... A bit of further testing has shown that at the very least, samba continues to attempt to look for "user" instead of "DOM+user" when trying to validate. Please! This is the last step I *must* get past before I can move mission critical services from a Sun Solaris 8 box to this Redhat Linux 9 machine ... [Samba] WinXP + Samba: Explorer locking problem
I've the following problem using WinXP + Samba 2.2.7: Whenever I use the Windows Explorer and roll the mouse pointer over a file (even without pressing the button), Windows locks that file (maybe to retrieve some more info?). This lock stays there for approx. 2-5 seconds ("watch smbstatus"). When I want to move or delete the file from Windows within this time, I consequently get a "file locked" error - it's hard to move a file without touching it with the mouse :) This makes using the Win Explorer quite annoying. So I wonder if - anyone else has observed this problem? - this a WinXP or a Samba problem, or both? - I can make WinXP not to lock the files? - there is some config option for Samba to release locks earlier, or to cache file infos, or else? For most settings I use default options (oplocks, l2ops, kernel ops activated). The samba server runs on Linux 2.4.21, and the shares reside on a reiserfs disk. Any help is welcome; if additional config details are required I'll post it. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

[Samba] winbind with ipcop
We have a samba server behind a firewall with the IP address 192.168.200.2 and a Windows 2000 Domain controller with the IP address 192.168.255.1 . When we put the samba in the same subnet then it woks fine. We forwarded the folowing ports: TCP and UDP 192.168.200.2 to 192.168.255.1port 137 192.168.200.2 to 192.168.255.1port 138 192.168.200.2 to 192.168.255.1port 139 192.168.200.2 to 192.168.255.1port 443 !!! In my last Mail I had port 445 that was a writing mistake!!! now we don't get any connection to our NT network. We also put in the /etc/hosts the entry: 192.168.255.1 server.domain pdc So the name got solved Which port do we need or what is wrong Thanks for your help Oli -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

OK, didn't think of that ;-) But I am not sure if Win2k is willing to cooperate with a server that does NOT offer encrypted passwords. AFAIK, WinNT does but 2k and XP only acept servers that at least offer encrypted passwords. RE: [Samba] authenticate from /etc/passwd
You'll need to set "encrypt passwords" option to "no" in the smb.conf file and hack your win2k client to send passwords in plain text (Local Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Options/Send unencrypted password ...). I'm not sure if this is wat you want. You can keep /etc/passwd en smbpasswd in sync using the "unix password sync = yes" option. >-- Origineel Bericht -- >From: "samba" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Date: Thu, 17 Jul 2003 14:06:12 +0500 >Subject: [Samba] authenticate from /etc/passwd > > >Hi All, I want my samba to authenticate users from UNIX /etc/passwd instead of smbpasswd file when they access the samba shares from win2k. This will not work due to the fact that windows and unix (/etc/passwd) store passwords in different ways ... that is the reason why smbpasswd exists. [Samba] Samba + acl + Domain Admins
Hi! I am running samba-2.2.7a with winbind and acl. I've setup share with default owner 'administrator' and group owner 'Domain Admins' and let access to others throw acl. Trouble is, when some user from 'Domain Admins' group changes some file, he also changes user and group owner to 'his_username' and 'Domain Users'. I've checked smb.conf and there is: domain admin group = admin users = which means that no one has rights to change file ownerships. What is wrong then? [Samba] SID of windows an issue with samba??
hi all windows uses a SID to have an unique identifier for a machine - does winbind map this ID, too or is this id ignored with samba? I'm asking because i like to image my machine that runs with samba3 within a ads managed domain and will copy it on other machines that shall be added to the domain, too. is it ok to simply change the hostname of the other machines and adding them into the ads later? thanks stefan - Gesendet von http://mail.yahoo.de -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] Slow file copying
Hi, Not sure what this could be but when copying files to the linux server running samba I don't have any problems with the speed at which it copies. If I copy the files from the server back to my workstation, running MAC OS X, it take twice as long in fact maybe even three times as long as when copying to the server. I am not aware of any bugs etc that may contribute to this problem. I am also not to sure what would affect this. I looked in my logs but found nothing that would indicate a problem. Other network traffic does not seem to be affected in speed at all. Anyone else experienced or experiencing this? My system is SuSE 8.2. samba 2.2.7a-58.
