[Samba] Strange Printing Problems

2003-07-17 Thread Leonard Chung
Hi,

I've got a small network with a few Windows XP machines. I'm running into a
problem where I can can print but others cannot. For me, everything works
great and as expected. However, for the others, they seem to have
intermittent problems where Samba complains with multiple lines such as the
following:

Jul 17 22:02:37 chung smbd[472]: [2003/07/17 22:02:37, 0]
rpc_client/cli_spoolss_notify.c:spoolss_connect_to_client(91)
Jul 17 22:02:37 chung smbd[472]: connect_to_client: unable to connect to
SMB server on machine ZEUS. Error was : SUCCESS - 0.

Does anybody have any idea what is going on? The client machines are all
Windows XP Pro. The printer is being driven by CUPS and the test pages print
fine from both the CUPS administrative interface and my Windows test pages
go through fine. The only difference between myself and the other users on
this unix box is that my account is part of the wheel group.

Here's my smb.conf file:

# Samba config file created using SWAT
# from 10.0.1.239 (10.0.1.239)
# Date: 2003/07/16 18:41:23

lanman auth = No
printing = cups
printcap name = cups
load printers = yes

[printers]

Here's my cups printers.conf file:

[Samba] Windows 2000 Domain controller access

2003-07-17 Thread Vijay Kumar
Hi All,

I have tried various things and have been browsing and studying a lot about
the configurations.
I am totally confused now. Pity.. I couldt do one simple configuration.

Please can anyone tell me how do I access a Samba Server from a Windows 2000
Domain Controller ? I want the Linux Samba Server to authenticate the users
.i.e in future if I need mor eusers to access the Linux share then I will
be adding/deleing user accounts from the linux box.

If possible, please help.

Regards,
Vijay.

[Samba] Re: Win2K sp4 can't print

2003-07-17 Thread Jamrock
There have been a number of issues with SP4. We always recommend that
people test patches (especially Microsoft's) in a lab before deploying.

RE: [Samba] Samba 3.0.0beta3: Problem looking up SID of root

2003-07-17 Thread Paul Eggleton
Interestingly, I have just reinstalled beta2 from source, and I get the
same problem, except looking up the uid of the root SID with wbinfo -S
gives 0, which I believe is the correct result. wbinfo -s still fails,
and I still get the unresolved SID when viewing from Windows.

[Samba] Samba3 PDC with LDAP

2003-07-17 Thread Chee Wai Yeung
Dear All,
I still cannot get Samba3 (beta3) to work as PDC with
LDAP backend. I still encounter the problem of having
to join an XP workstation two times in succession
before the join is successful. This does not happen on
Samba2.2.8a. For both Samba 2.2.8a and samba3 beta i
have workstation accounts added directly to ldap (via
add-machine-script) without adding a corresponding
entry in /etc/passwd. Same script used (except that
the LDAP schemas are different).

I have read the Samba docs a few times (for Samba3)
but I still cannot figure out why the following
(extracted from the samba log) exists:

[2003/07/18 11:47:42, 2]
lib/smbldap.c:smbldap_search_suffix(1056)
  smbldap_search_suffix: searching
for:[(&(uid=vaio$)(objectclass=sambaSamAccount))]
[2003/07/18 11:47:42, 0]
passdb/pdb_ldap.c:ldapsam_add_sam_account(1458)
User 'vaio$' already in the base, with samba
attributes
[2003/07/18 11:47:42, 0]
rpc_server/srv_samr_nt.c:_api_samr_create_user(2326)
could not add user/computer vaio$ to passdb. Check
permissions?

(This happens when the XP joined the domain the first
time,which failed).

May I ask for anyone who has successfully used Samba3
beta as PDC with Openldap to help? I'd be very much
appreciated also if someone can point me to documents
somewhere which I can read further on this.

Thanks in advance!
Chee Wai

[Samba] patch: smbclient lost some files

2003-07-17 Thread Yasuoka Masahiko
Dear developers,

I found a problem that 'smbclient' loses some files when it's creating
a tar ball. A patch attached this message is for samba 2.2.8a and
fixes this problem. Would you please check it?

I think there is a protocol mismatch with Windows 2000 at
cli_list_new() in libsmb/clilist.c (FIND FIRST2/FIND NEXT2). Samba
assumes that 'Last Name Offset' response field is points to

   - the first octet of FileName field of the last file/directory
 entry.

But responses from Windows 2000 points to

   - the first octet of the last file/directory entry.

As result, smbclient sets 'mask' incorrectly and Windows 2000 seems to
fail resuming the transaction and lost some files.

As far as I read 'CIFS technical reference', I think Samba is correct.
But I think we need a working around for this protocol mismatch.

***
Problem:

smbclient loses some files when it is creating a tar ball.

Environment:

  OS: Red Hat Linux/i386 (Linux2.4.20-18.8)
  cc: gcc 3.2 20020903
  libc:glibc-2.3.2 (RPM glibc-2.3.2-4.80.6)
  version: 2.2.8a
Network: smbclient connects to a Windows 2000(SP4) box in same network.

How to Repeat:

  1. Make a share directory on Windows box. The share directory
includes a many many files and directories (26,000+ files and
300+ directory). Some directories have many files in it(950+).
  2. Create a tar ball of the share directory using smbclient.
  3. During creating a tar ball, run a job on Windows box like
 'dir /s /b [share directory]'
  4. tar ball (smbclient) lost some files (3-30 files).

[Samba] Samba 3.0.0beta3: Problem looking up SID of root

2003-07-17 Thread Paul Eggleton
Hi all,

I have just installed Samba 3.0.0 beta 3 on RH9, after uninstalling beta
2 (but keeping the smb.conf file the same). I am having a problem with
resolving the SID of root. I have "admin users = Administrator" set on
the single share I have set up so that Administrator performs as root.

Looking at a directory created in the share by Administrator on the
Windows client, which on the Samba server is owned by root, Windows
reports that it has an owner of the following unresolved SID:

S-1-5-21-2120923204-611296470-4252591782-1000

Using wbinfo on the Samba server:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# wbinfo -S
S-1-5-21-2120923204-611296470-4252591782-1000
10001

Could not lookup sid S-1-5-21-2120923204-611296470-4252591782-1000

If I run "getent passwd" there are lots of winbind-mapped entries, but
none for uid 10001. So it seems that it is the uid mapping for root is
broken in 3.0.0 beta 3, unless I have somehow made a mistake in the
upgrade. I am positive this was working fine with my beta 2 installation
- I could look at a folder on the share from Windows and it would
display MACHINENAME\root, not an unresolved SID. I have tried deleting
the winbind idmap tdb file but it doesn't help the situation.

Paul

[Samba] Browsing Problem

2003-07-17 Thread Martin Stacey
I just had a Windows XP SP1 PC force an election and take over from my Samba
PDC as the master browser.

How is this possible?

My smb.conf file has these brosing parameters;

os level = 64
domain master = yes
local master = yes
preferred master = yes

I also have included a copy of my nmbd.log.

[Samba] Windows XP Picture and Fax Viewer Rotate-Function does notwork on Samba Shares

2003-07-17 Thread Deti Fliegl
Hi there,

I am facing a problem when rotating a picture with the Windows XP built
in picture and fax viewer. Whenever I try to rotate a picture from a
samba share the viewer application tells me that it is not able to save
the file. Maybe there is some problem with filelocking as it seems to be
kept open by the viewer while it writes the rotated version back to the
same file.
Am I doing something wrong or is there a solution. Turning off
op-locking in Windows XP does not work. Playing around with samba file
locking options neither worked.
My samba version is 2.2.5 running on linux (kernel 2.4.21).

Please reply directly to my address as I am not subscribed to this list.

[Samba] Connection Problem

2003-07-17 Thread Helen Mason
I have a Sun Solaris 2.6 system, with Samba 2.0.5.

One of the PC's which has the outlook.pst file stored on a samba share keeps
getting an error saying the outlook.pst file could not be saved and outlook
crashes. This PC also takes a long tome to open files on the samba share
with Excel, and sometimes fails to open them, although they will open when
re-tried. The PC is called 19-2103157 and the user is jweller. I can see
various error messages in the attached log file, and have looked on the web
site, but I am none the wiser about how to resolve the problem.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

[Samba] Joining samba to AD domain with a non-admin user

2003-07-17 Thread Chere Zhou
I need help to resolve this issue.

I saw that Andrew put a patch by Antti to enable users without full admin
access to join samba into an AD domain. I am playing with it and always get
"Insufficient access". Using the same user, I can join a Windows box into
the domain just fine. The user is a member of "domain users", but not
"domain admins". I can use a user in "domain admins" to join the AD domain
fine too. I tried with beta3, and it's the same as alpha24 and alpha21 (a21
did not have Antti's patch).

So my question is, is this supported, or broken, or am I using it wrong? The
failure happens during ldap_add_s called from ads_add_machine_acct(). I do
kinit before the "net ads join" command. However I haven't found where the
kerberos ticket was used before the failure although the ticket does make a
difference.

Thanks,
Chere

RE: [Samba] Win2K sp4 can't print

2003-07-17 Thread PageDeveloper

Bob,

Are the units printing? The access denied is on my win2k SP2 and it
is still printing. Why did you use printing = bsd? I used cups, and
it is working. Also there are two files mime.types, and mime.conv
that might need to be changed. (SAMBA DIR)

Hi,

I just installed 2 Win2K sp4 workstations on an otherwise working Samba
2.2.8a
network and 2 of the 3 printers are showing "Access denied". What's up with
that?
The other computers that are working just fine are Win98, XP and Win2K NOT
sp4.

Here is part of the global section:
printing = bsd
load printers = yes
disable spoolss = yes
printcap name = /etc/printcap
printer admin = admin, administrator, @ntadmin

Here is one of the printers:
[Printer]
comment = Our Printer
path = /var/spool/lpd/hp4000n
queuepause command = /usr/sbin/lpc -P%p stop
queueresume command = /usr/sbin/lpc -P%p start
print command = /usr/bin/lpr -Php4000n -r %s
use client driver = yes
printer name = hp4000n
browsable = yes
printable = yes
guest ok = yes
writable = no
public = yes
force user = lp
create mask = 0700
write list = admin, administrator, @ntadmin

All the printers are identical except for the name and the path. They work
for
everybody except the Win2K sp4.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: [Samba] Question on use of a username map file andsecurity=domain interactions ?

Thanks Don ... I figured out how to use the ! in the map file last night to
fix it !!

Map file of

!jsmith=smith
!smith=wsmith

or

!smith=wsmith
!jsmith=smith

Works MUCH better :-)

In my case, the Samba server is just a member server and not a domain
controller, and WINS is disabled. Our DNS is served from a Windows 2000
SP3 server, rather than BIND.

To the best of my knowledge, we aren't using WINS. I don't see a
particular need for it when DNS is available (but I may be mistaken -
perhaps this is the problem?). The Windows machines that I am using to
connect to the Samba machine are running Windows 2000 Server SP3 and
have static IPs.

2003-07-17 Thread Kristis Makris
Hi Paul,

This is another report I came across that indicates this may be a naming
service problem, as you mentioned in your bug description:

http://www.geocrawler.com/archives/3/151/2002/11/150/10253550/

Perhaps we can compare configs. I'm running bind for DNS and have "wins
support = yes" on the samba3 pdc to run a WINS server. I was not pushing
down through dhcp a WINS server IP or node type (nor was one hard coded
in each client), but I just set that and I'll let you know if that makes
a difference.

Are you setting a WINS server on each client machine or through dhcp ?

Kevin,

I have that same message on my win2k machine. I can print, and
all is fine. One of the points, is that if you double click on
the printer folder, the printers inside that folder do not give
you that error. The only ones that I get that error from is
the ones that are on the same page as the shares.

You will need to supply more information before anyone will be able to
help you. What version of Samba are you trying to install? What role do
you want the Samba server to perform? What exact errors are you
getting/problems are you having?

If you are using Samba 3.0-beta, the following is the definitive
document on setting up and using Samba (it also contains information of
relevance to 2.2):

Yes, I am also getting this error. I posted a message to this list a few
days ago, and so far there has been no response. Similar messages from
others including yourself have also met with little response. Hence I
have filed a bug in the hope that it might get sorted out that way:

https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=232

If this is caused by an obvious misconfiguration on on my part, and
that's why nobody is responding, I would appreciate being told so.
However if that is the case then the log message could really do with
being a bit more informative.

tested if I'm also getting disconnects and Word saving problems that way. But, people
using 2.2.7 must have also seen this.

Here are some messages I've seen in the logs using samba-3.0.0beta3.

[2003/07/17 12:16:06, 0] lib/util_sock.c:get_socket_addr(900)

[Samba] Samba disappears when bridging

2003-07-17 Thread James Goldwater
I've had a working samba setup on debian testing, viewing shares from my
winxp box, for quite a while. I've just set up another box as a wireless
access point, and am bridging the wireless and wired networks. When
connecting via wireless (i.e. through the bridge) I'm unable to get any
samba connectivity. I can ping, ssh, use imap etc fine through the
wireless, but not samba.

Here's the output from nbtstat -A 192.168.0.64 (my samba box, called
"debian") (after refreshing the cache):

Wireless Network Connection:
Node IpAddress: [192.168.0.66] Scope Id: []
  NetBIOS Remote Machine Name Table
  Name Type Status
   -
   DEBIAN <00> UNIQUE Registered
   DEBIAN <03> UNIQUE Registered
   DEBIAN <20> UNIQUE Registered
   ..__MSBROWSE__.<01> GROUP Registered
   WORKGROUP <00> GROUP Registered
   WORKGROUP <1D> UNIQUE Registered
   WORKGROUP <1E> GROUP Registered

   MAC Address = 00-00-00-00-00-00

Someone on the debian-user list suggested setting up my samba box as a
wins server, which I did (added wins support = yes): here's my smb.conf
file:

# Do something sensible when Samba crashes: mail the admin a backtrace
   panic action = /usr/share/samba/panic-action %d
   workgroup = WORKGROUP
   encrypt passwords = true
  passdb backend = smbpasswd guest
  wins support = yes
[homes]
   browsable = no
   writable = yes
[downloads]
   comment = Download area
   path = /home/downloads
   browsable = yes
   writable = yes
   valid users = james
When I reconnect via the wired interface on my xp box (I'm trying to
migrate to wireless!) , everything works. I've got the same IP on the
winxp box when both wired and wireless.

Can anyone help me? Thanks very much in advance

James

I thought that in this example that "WINDOWS" was the sample name of the remote
domain. If "GLASS" is the name of the remote domain, then what does "WINDOWS"
represent?

Here is a fuller excerpt:

"To establish Samba as the trusting domain (named SAMBA) from a Windows NT
4.0 domain named WINDOWS:

  1) create the trust account for SAMBA in "User Manager for Domains"
  2) connect the trust from the Samba domain using

To create a trustlationship with SAMBA as the trusted domain:

  1) create the initial trust account for GLASS using
'smbpasswd -a -i GLASS'. You may need to create a UNIX

server share some important files in the ultra 10 to other computers using
the microsoft network. Sometimes when i connect the ultra to the network,
the windows pcs are unable to see eachother using Windows explorer(network
neiborhood) , to find each pc is necesary to use start->find->computer. If i
disconnect the ultra 10 the computers can see eachother in network
neiborhood is samba doing some problem with that?.

[Samba] NT auth with Winbind

2003-07-17 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi All,
I am trying to get authentication against AD using
Winbind and Samba 3. We use Kerberos 5 as well. I know
that winbind is running properly because when I run
wbinfo -a, I get success messages. The problem seems
to be when I try to play with the pam modules. For
kicks, here is the pam module for sshd:

#%PAM-1.0
auth sufficient pam_winbind.so debug
auth sufficient pam_unix2.so # set_secrpc
auth required pam_nologin.so
auth required pam_env.so
account sufficient pam_winbind.so debug
account required pam_unix2.so
account required pam_nologin.so
password required pam_pwcheck.so
password required pam_unix2.so use_first_pass
use_authtok
session required pam_unix2.so none # trace or debug
session required pam_limits.so

The frustrating thing is that nothing shows up in the
logs. SInce the auth is set to sufficient above, I can
still use the service using my local credentials. This
shows up in the logfiles...it shows the pam_winbind
failing while the pam_unix2 succeeding. But when I try
to use the service with DOMAIN+username, nothing shows
up in the logs. All I get is a permission denied when
I try to use the service.

Also, I don't know if this is related, but when I run
winbindd -d 3 -i I get:
.
.
smbldap_open_connection: connection opened
fetch_ldap_pw: neither ldap secret retrieved!
ldap_connect_system: Failed to retrieve password from
secrets.tdb
Connection to LDAP Server failed for the 1 try!
LDAP search failed: Invalid credentials
Query was: , (objectclass=sambaGroupMapping)
Unable to open passdb
Registered MSG_REQ_POOL_USAGE
Registered MSG_REQ_DMALLOC_MARK and LOG_CHANGED
scanning trusted domain list

I don't know if these problems could be related to the
fact that we are using Krb and the PDC might not be
configured for that I am not familiar with the
specifics of everything yet. Any ideas?? Any help is
much appreciated.

Thanks In Advance!
Aaron

Re: [Samba] authenticate from /etc/passwd

2003-07-17 Thread Steve Waltner
For easy reference, the registry changes are as follows. Just put the
listed information into the filenames listed and open the file on each
client system allowing RegEdit to make the registry changes. You will
need to reboot to pickup the changes. After doing this, you will be
able to authenticate from the UNIX password information. The Windows
system will always prompt for the password for the share even if your
password matches because the password is being sent in cleartext across
the wire.

windows95.reg

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\VNETSUP]

"EnablePlainTextPassword"=dword:0001

windowsnt.reg

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Rdr\Parameters]

"EnablePlainTextPassword"=dword:0001

windows2k.reg (also XP and 2003)

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanworkstation\
parameters]

"EnablePlainTextPassword"=dword:0001

[Samba] idmap problems with Samba 3.0 beta3

2003-07-17 Thread Felipe Alfaro Solana
Hi!

With Samba 3.0 beta 2, I could use "idmap" Windows-to-Unix mappings. I
could run "pdbedit -a " to add a Windows account and Samba would
automatically acquire a UID using OpenLDAP as the backend. However, with
the same configuration file, Samba 3.0 beta 3 simply doesn't query the
OpenLDAP directory about "sambaUnixIdPool" object class, and limits to
look for a directory entry with a "uid" matching the username specified
as parameter in the "pdbedit" command.

What am I doing wrong? What has changed since beta 2? The announcement
talks about changes in mapping between SID and UID, but, as in the past,
the documentation is scarce and somewhat confusing. I haven't been able
to track any changes to this.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

Hi

I am using samba-3.0.0beta3-1.i386.rpm on RedHat 9...
trying to migrate from NT4 PDC to Samba PDC...
reading the HOW-TO document at step 6 whioch is net rpc vampire...
Unsuccessfull...
when i do
#net rpc vampire -S NTSERVER -U Administrator%password
All NT users are created in /etc/passwd file and also home directories
created without any problem..but only few user entries are created in
smbpasswd file!!!. i see following error messages for which user entries
are not created in smbpasswd file...

Treat user1 as a user name for which entry in smbpasswd is not
created..but i can see user1 in /etc/passwd and also directory is
created under /home/user1

Creating account: user1
[2003/07/17 13:29:01, 0] passdb/pdb_smbpasswd.c:build_smb_pass(1129)

This above error eventually means the user entries which are not created
in smbpasswd file cannot log in to Samba PDC

[Samba] 2 GB Limit when writing to smbfs filesystems

2003-07-17 Thread Gerald L. Harper
I'm running RedHat 8.0 with samba-2.2.7-5.8.0 (installed from RedHat
distribution)

When I use cpio to write a backup (> 2GB) to a smbfs filesystem, I get the
error: File size limit exceeded
I get the same error when I linux copy (cp) a file (> 2GB) from a Linux ext3
filesystem to the smbfs filesystem.
The smbfs filesystem is mounted from a Windows 2000 Professional
workstation.

After experiencing the problem, I installed an NFS client on the Windows
2000 Professional workstation (for testing purposes). Everything works with
NFS, but I want to make it work with samba.

I DO NOT get an error when:
MS copy from NTFS to samba share (i.e. copy c:\bigfile
\\linuxsvr\smbshr\bigfile)
MS copy from samba share to NTFS (i.e. copy \\linuxsvr\smbshr\bigfile
c:\bigfile)
Linux copy from ext3 to ext3 (i.e. cp -p /home/bigfile1 /home/bigfile2)
Linux copy from NFS to ext3 (i.e. cp -p /nfs/bigfile /home/bigfile)
Linux copy from ext3 to NFS (i.e. cp -p /home/bigfile to /nfs/bigfile)

I ONLY get the error when linux is trying to copy (cp) or write (cpio, tar,
dd) to a mounted samba filesystem.
(i.e. mount -t smb //win2k-ws/share /mnt)

Do I need to install something for linux to treat the mounted share as a
CIFS filesystem?

As a matter of fact I don't use "veto oplock files".

And by "foreplay" I meant what's going on on every
open not just the first time. For that matter, starting
Excell for the first time after a fresh login may take
considerably longer even on a tiny local spreadsheet.

If you're happy with oplock vetos, that's fine. But I
think you do have a bigger problem somewhere. How big
is the file that takes 15 seconds to open from a samba
share and only a snap from a netware share?

Thanks for the reply.
I added the "veto oplock files = /*.xls/*.XLS" and that works better. You are right
about the "foreplay" because after I added the veto and
open the very first Excel file on a SAMBA share, it takes 8-10 seconds initially. Any
other Excel file after that will open instantly. Before I added the "veto oplocks",
EVERY file that I opened used to take 8-15 seconds EVERY TIME. Did you have to add a
veto statement within your
config file in order to make Excel happy because that is the only thing that I have
found to make things work kinda like they should.

[Samba] Logging request

2003-07-17 Thread Wayne Rasmussen
Someone at work here asked me if it is possible to log, on a per share or
just a single share out of a group of shares, any write activity. We have
setup a special share for a bean counter and his staff and he wants to
document when his people are making changes to their files on that share...

[Samba] CIFS/SMB question

2003-07-17 Thread Balaji Raghavan
Hello,
I have a very basic query about CIFS. Do you need to hae CIFS support
on the client machine too or does only the mount.cifs file suffice?
Also, when I try to mount a partition from a machine, I get this error:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] /]# mount -t cifs //10.51.233.103:/homes /mnt/m1 -o user=balaji
Password:
mount error 22 = Invalid argumentRefer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man
mount.cifs)

Thanks.

[Samba] Re: Why is EXCEL SO SLOW on SAMBA?

2003-07-17 Thread Dragan Krnic
| I have always experienced VERY SLOW response times
| on opening an EXCEL sheet ever since I had started
| to use SAMBA WAY back. I have been hoping that a
| newer release would fix this one issue but it never
| seems to happen. Does anyone know what could be the
| problem? I can open the same Excel sheet on a
| Novell server and it opens instantly. I have no
| problems with WORD documents. They open just fine.
| It just seems to be the Office 2000 pro Excel
| sheets. This slowness occurs on the 2x all the way
| up to the 3.0 beta 2. I have also tried turning off
| oplocks but that has no effect. It takes 15 seconds
| to open an Excel sheet on SAMBA and only a half of a
| second on Novell.

On my system Excel (OfficeXP) opens a small
spreadsheet (100 KB) just as fast when it is on the
local disk as when it is on the samba share.

In 15 seconds it can open a 41.4 MB big spreadsheet.
Paradoxically, it only takes 8 seconds to store it
back to samba share after a change.

The same file on a local disk takes a little less than
2 seconds to open but 5 seconds to write back after
a change.

The copy time in both directions is about 5 seconds.
It may explain the longer write-back time.

However the longer opening time consists of a foreplay,
when a void Excel window first appears until it starts
reading the file sequentially - about 8 seconds, and
the loading time - about 7 seconds. The foreplay is
a very amusing ritual if you look at it with filemon
or ethereal.

But if your PC takes 15 seconds for a considerably
smaller spreadsheet, there's something wrong with your
system setup, not necessarily samba.

[Samba] Samba and Reiserfs: long locking (was: WinXP + Samba:Explorer locking problem)

2003-07-17 Thread honema
It seems the locking problem is related to reiserfs, not to WinXP. Under WinXP, it's
just more obvious because the Explorer already sets locks when moving the mouse.

So, has anybody similar experience (locks on examined files are maintained for several
seconds) with samba and reiserfs?

Re: [Samba] Question on use of a username map file andsecurity=domain interactions ?

2003-07-17 Thread Don McCall
Hi ken,
issue is that mapping continues to happen, so what you see is the following:

ntusername wsmith gets mapped to unix 'smith';
now the smith username is used to continue parsing thru the user map file, and
matches smith on the right side, so he gets finally mapped to jsmith on the left.
In other words, we parse thru the entire map file, and continue mapping until there
are no more right side matches...

So for your issue, for instance, if you reversed the names in your mapfile:
jsmith=smith
smith=wsmith
I think you would be ok.
he would come in as nt user smith, get mapped to jsmith, and jsmith doesn't have
another rightside match.

Hope this helps,
Don

Hi

I'm looking for thoughts/experiences when the following conditions are met ...

I have 2 users say Sam Smith and Jeff Smith

On UNIX (on the samba server) their logins are

Walt Smith = "smith"
Jeff Smith = "jsmith

On the NT DOMAIN side, their logins are

Walt Smith = "wsmith"
Jeff Smith = "smith"

In my smb.config file, I have

security = domain [ and all the stuff that goes with it]
username map = /samba/lib/name-maps

And in name-maps, I have

smith = wsmith
jsmith = smith

Note the re-use of the word "smith" on both sides

And the issue is that when Walt Smith mounts \\samba\wsmith from his pc, he
actually gets Jeff Smith's home directory and has the permissions as though
he was Jeff Smith on UNIX not good And if he mounts \\samba\smith
then he gets his home directory but has the permissions as though he was
Jeff Smith on UNIX ... still bad ... It almost seems as though the name
mapping is occuring recursively somehow ?

The server in question is an old 2.0.6-pre1 version but I also have a 2.2.9pre1
server that shows issues along the same thing but behaves a bit differently.

Please reply to me directly so I don't miss it in all the noise !!

RE: [Samba] Samba 2.2.8a/winbindd - 2K Domain users passwordchallenged

2003-07-17 Thread Stewart, Eric
Okay okay - forgive me for being a whiney itchbay. But the fix was (when
discussing *nix systems) quite counter intuitive ...
I noticed that, even after using chmod #uid file, that the system was not
returning the string name for the appropriate numerical uid. So, since I was headed
out to lunch, I went ahead and rebooted the server.

Lo and behold it all appears to work now. Correctly even.

I'm guessing that changes to /etc/nsswitch.conf may not necessarily register
immediately and that's where I was running into trouble. That or something to do with
files moving into place (like /lib/libnss_winbind.so) and not being "seen".
Now if I could only be sure of what service it was that need restarting ...

Check to see if they can still print. Win2K does that to me too, but
they can still print. I had to add:

use client driver = yes

To the printers defenition to get the Access Denied error to go away.

Re: [Samba] I have a problem in configure.

2003-07-17 Thread Don McCall
Looks like you just have the NON ANSI standard compiler that ships free with HP-UX;
basically only useful for regenning the kernel; for development work, you need the
ansi standard compiler; you can either purchase it from hp, or you could go to the gnu
gcc web site and download a copy of gcc and use it instead.
Hope this helps,
Don

oplocks are activated, but I've also tried with all oplock settings disabled, which
brings no change in the behaviour.

RE: [Samba] Samba 2.2.8a/winbindd - 2K Domain users passwordchallenged

2003-07-17 Thread Stewart, Eric
I know it's been less than a day but I'm kind of surprised that I
haven't gotten an answer on this one way or the other ... so let me ask a
simpler question:

Are winbind served users of a Linux machine supposed to have access
to the samba shares served by that Linux machine? If so, please provide
sample smb.conf's (if they differ from mine below) and pam.d/* files. As
my users only need access to the samba shares, and not login access, I'm
hesitant to change any /etc/pam.d/ file aside from /etc/pam.d/samba ...

A bit of further testing has shown that at the very least, samba
continues to attempt to look for "user" instead of "DOM+user" when trying
to validate. Please! This is the last step I *must* get past before I
can move mission critical services from a Sun Solaris 8 box to this Redhat
Linux 9 machine ...

Re: [Samba] Vijay - samba box not seen in browse list.

2003-07-17 Thread Vijay Kumar

the configurations.

OK, didn't think of that ;-)
But I am not sure if Win2k is willing to cooperate with a server that does
NOT
offer encrypted passwords. AFAIK, WinNT does but 2k and XP only acept servers

do you have oplocks on or off? I haven't had any good luck with them being
on, so I just set them all to off.

[Samba] WinXP + Samba: Explorer locking problem

2003-07-17 Thread Steve

I've the following problem using WinXP + Samba 2.2.7:

Whenever I use the Windows Explorer and roll the mouse pointer over a file (even
without pressing the button), Windows locks that file (maybe to retrieve some more
info?). This lock stays there for approx. 2-5 seconds ("watch smbstatus").
When I want to move or delete the file from Windows within this time, I consequently
get a "file locked" error - it's hard to move a file without touching it with the
mouse :) This makes using the Win Explorer quite annoying.

So I wonder if
- anyone else has observed this problem?
- this a WinXP or a Samba problem, or both?
- I can make WinXP not to lock the files?
- there is some config option for Samba to release locks earlier, or to cache file
infos, or else?

For most settings I use default options (oplocks, l2ops, kernel ops activated). The
samba server runs on Linux 2.4.21, and the shares reside on a reiserfs disk.

Any help is welcome; if additional config details are required I'll post it.

[Samba] winbind with ipcop

2003-07-17 Thread Oliver Knittel

We have a samba server behind a firewall with the IP address 192.168.200.2
and a Windows 2000 Domain controller with the IP address 192.168.255.1 .
When we put the samba in the same subnet then it woks fine.
We forwarded the folowing ports:

TCP and UDP
192.168.200.2 to 192.168.255.1port 137
192.168.200.2 to 192.168.255.1port 138
192.168.200.2 to 192.168.255.1port 139
192.168.200.2 to 192.168.255.1port 443

!!! In my last Mail I had port 445 that was a writing mistake!!!

now we don't get any connection to our NT network. We also put in the
/etc/hosts the entry:
192.168.255.1 server.domain pdc
So the name got solved

Which port do we need or what is wrong

Thanks for your help

Oli

OK, didn't think of that ;-)
But I am not sure if Win2k is willing to cooperate with a server that does NOT
offer encrypted passwords. AFAIK, WinNT does but 2k and XP only acept servers
that at least offer encrypted passwords.

RE: [Samba] authenticate from /etc/passwd

2003-07-17 Thread kenneth . westelinck
You'll need to set "encrypt passwords" option to "no" in the smb.conf file
and hack your win2k client to send passwords in plain text (Local Security
Settings/Local Policies/Security Options/Send unencrypted password ...).
I'm not sure if this is wat you want. You can keep /etc/passwd en smbpasswd
in sync using the "unix password sync = yes" option.

This will not work due to the fact that windows and unix (/etc/passwd) store
passwords in different ways ... that is the reason why smbpasswd exists.

Réf. : [Samba] Samba Beta 3 + LDAP: user in mappedgroup "Domain Admins" isn't a domain admin when he logs on

2003-07-17 Thread stephane . purnelle

You cannot add one attribute "memberuid" with comma separator.
You can add more than one attribute "memberUid"

example :
...
memberUid root
memberUid administrateur
memberUid administratror

Hi,

I have the group "root" and user "root" who is in the group "root".
I have successfuly mapped the unixgroup root to the ntgroup Domain Admins.
Command :
net groupmap add sid=S-1-...-512 unixgroup=root ntgroup="Domain Admins"
type=domain

I the LDAP directory samba added the objectclass sambaGroupMapping with the
appropriated attributes. Furthermore I have added the addribute "memberUid"
to
the element of the group "root". I have added a comma seperated list of the
who have to be in that group.

When I run "net groupmap list", I get the output :
Domain Admins (S-1-5-21-90685517-1016115244-2338707762-512) -> root

When I try to log on to the Windows machine, I am a normal user, who cannot

change the ip address for example.
The group "\Domain Admins" is in the group of the local
Administrators.

What's wrong

Thanks for any answer

[Samba] Samba + acl + Domain Admins

2003-07-17 Thread Vladimir Nikolic
Hi!

I am running samba-2.2.7a with winbind and acl. I've setup share with
default owner 'administrator' and group owner 'Domain Admins' and let
access to others throw acl. Trouble is, when some user from 'Domain
Admins' group changes some file, he also changes user and group owner to
'his_username' and 'Domain Users'. I've checked smb.conf and there is:

domain admin group =
admin users =
which means that no one has rights to change file ownerships.
What is wrong then?
Thanks

[Samba] SID of windows an issue with samba??

2003-07-17 Thread stefan sokoll
hi all

windows uses a SID to have an unique identifier for a machine - does winbind map this
ID, too or is this id ignored with samba?

I'm asking because i like to image my machine that runs with samba3 within a ads
managed domain and will copy it on other machines that shall be added to the domain,
too.
is it ok to simply change the hostname of the other machines and adding them into the
ads later?

thanks stefan

[Samba] Slow file copying

2003-07-17 Thread Eugene Joubert
Hi,

Not sure what this could be but when copying files to the linux server
running samba I don't have any problems with the speed at which it copies.
If I copy the files from the server back to my workstation, running MAC OS
X, it take twice as long in fact maybe even three times as long as when
copying to the server.

I am not aware of any bugs etc that may contribute to this problem. I am
also not to sure what would affect this. I looked in my logs but found
nothing that would indicate a problem. Other network traffic does not seem
to be affected in speed at all.

Anyone else experienced or experiencing this?

My system is SuSE 8.2. samba 2.2.7a-58.

Thanks
