RE: [Samba] Pdf printer by mail with samba 3.0.9-1

2004-12-07 Thread Mitch (WebCob)

The problem of the connectivity error seems to have been persistant for the
duration of the windows login - so whatever I had screwed up I think I must
have fixed, but I still have concerns... (and oodles of ideas - I could use
this same process to create a fax gateway too...)

[Mitch says:] >One of you had:
[Mitch says:] >lpq command = lpq -P'%p'
[Mitch says:] >lprm command = lprm -P'%p' %j
[Mitch says:] >lppause command = lpc hold '%p' %j
[Mitch says:] >lpresume command = lpc release '%p' %j
[Mitch says:] >queuepause command = lpc stop '%p'
[Mitch says:] >queueresume command = lpc start '%p'
[Mitch says:] >And one had only lpq and lprm with nothing after the = - I
[Mitch says:] >tried both ways?!?!

Further to my other email... The common important element is the line:
print command = /usr/local/bin/pdfout1.sh %s %u %m %I

When I look at the calls to "lpq -P'%p" etc, they all return errors as %p's
value (the printer share name) is not defined in printcap - would doing this
have any purpose? "print command" seems to get called directly from the user
as the call the print job, which in theory would mean there could be many
calls to the script at once... ok I guess, but it does mean people should be
careful with simple file naming systems - ones that rely on the date or
possibly even the process id could result in duplicate files - right?

Perhaps somehow I should be using lpd to call the script? To create a proper
queueing process and serialize the conversions? Otherwise couldn't I
experience the "print-of-death" from my users as 100 of them start to print
a PDF all at once?

If I'm way off here, please tell me where I'm heading wrong...

Thanks for the help!

Why not use "wins hook"?

Have you checked out the python bindings (included on most distros now i
think) if the hook scripts are not sufficient?

Re: [Samba] Joining XP clients to a Samba PDC

2004-12-07 Thread Paul Gienger

As far as I can tell I should be able to join the domain with the root
account (added with smbldap-useradd -a -G 512 -m -s /bin/false -d
/dev/null -F "" -P root). But all I get for my efforts is an error
dialog "The following error occurred attempting to join the domain
'BI': The network path was not found".
If you're using the stock idealx setup (I believe) that you could be
using the Administrator account, make sure that you have the password
for that account, change it with smbpasswd if not. Your root user may
or may not be set up right, I don't know the syntax of the command off
hand.

Try to change your double quotes to single quotes, I believe that has
been known to cause issues.

Have you set the password for your manager DN? Does your sambaDomain
object exist?

Grasping at straws a bit here since your log doesn't seem to say
anything blatantly obvious.

This is a problem for us too, but we tell those that like to hoard data
that they have to deal with the login delay. It's their choice, learn
or deal, although I do respect that you have migration issues. The
mailbox files from TBird are actually mbox format so they could go
straight up if you use that, or else you can run mb2md on them to
migrate to maildir, with some manual tweaking or auxilary scripting.

Also, how hard is it to have some users not use a roaming profile but
others continuing to use a roaming profile? We have some laptop users
that don't need roaming but office staff which do benefit from the use
of roaming profiles.
Very easy. There are two approaches.
1. Have no roaming profile by default but instead set it on a per user
basis. Note that I haven't tried this, but I'm seriously considering it.
2. Once the user logs in, you can hit My Computer -> properties, then
under the advanced tab, select the profiles and then hit settings. You
can change to a local profile here.

[Samba] smbmount read/write block size stuck at 4k

2004-12-07 Thread Dan Singletary
When using smbmount to mount a share from WinXP, I observed
less-than-optimal throughput when copying a file from the remote share
to a local disk. Observation of the protocol dialog with Ethereal
revealed that smbmount was making read requests for 4k bytes at a time.
Similar observation of protocol dialog between two WinXP boxes showed
that the typical read request was for 64k.

I then tried to use smbclient to 'get' the file, and again observed 4k
SMB read requests. I found that using the '-b ' option with
smbclient is effective in REDUCING the buffer size as small as 1 byte
(reflected in Ethereal showing 1 byte SMB read requests), however I am
unable to use '-b' to increase the read requests beyond 4k.

Why does smbmount/smbclient only read data at 4k per block? This
results in horribly poor performance (~4 MBytes/sec) on a gigabit
network that should permit transfer rates that challenge the speed of
the disk drives involved...

[SAMBA] samba - bind : program guideline suggestion

2004-12-07 Thread Eric Boutin
Hi all !
I'm currently developping a program that takes the smbtree output, parse it,
retrieve all connected workstations, then call nmblookup for each
workstation, resolve the IP, create a BIND zone file with this.

At this point, the programs works; I use system( " ") calls and unsafe
temporairy files. I just wanted to get it up quickly

Now; to secure this programs; I tought about 2 things
-> secure the program using pipes
However; I would have to make an update at each samba release since
there's no way to guarante that the smbtree and nmblookup arguments and
output will be the exact same file format as the current one

-> Link my code to samba.
I would take the smbtree code; just rename the main function
smbtreemain and do the same for nmblookup and use internal variables to
handle it. However, I'm not shure this code would even build in future
release because of linkage to librairies and so...

Which way do you recommand ?
Any other suggestions ?
Thanks a lot !

Re: [Samba] Joining XP clients to a Samba PDC

2004-12-07 Thread Chuck Theobald
Hi Andrew,
I ran into a couple of XP issues when trying to join my Totalnet Advanced
Server (TAS) domain. Though not exactly Samba, this was a change on the XP
end and may help. I found that I had to change the local security policy
such that "Domain member: Digitally encrypt or sign secure channel data
(always)" had to be disabled. A reboot afterwards is needed. This is
found under Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> Administrative
Tools -> Local Security Policy -> Security Settings -> Local Policies ->
Security Options. I also had to disable the Internet Connection Firewall,
at least with non-SP2. SP2 will generally prompt you as to whether to
allow programs to get through the firewall. If you are not using domain
membership, this may not apply, but it would be good to check into the
firewall angle in any case.

Re: [Samba] Roaming profiles - exclude Application Data from roaming profile

2004-12-07 Thread Brett Carruthers
Thanks rruegner,
We run IMAP for the email but for the torrents of previous email
migrated over we decided to not import all of it back into IMAP (which
reduces useless mail and gives the people a chance to clean their email
out). I have administrative control of the entire network and would have
liked to apply a active directory policy or likewise to not include the
Application Data directory in the profiles - I just don't know how to do it.

Thanks for the info regarding resetting thunderbirds storage location, I
have actually already done that with several clients but am looking for
a more long term solution which requires less configuration at the
client end. I haven't touched firebird yet which will also be a problem
- I hadn't attended to that one.

I would still like to know how to exclude the Application Data from
roaming profiles on a whole samba server basis. Also, how hard is it to
have some users not use a roaming profile but others continuing to use a
roaming profile?

Regards,
Brett

Hi,
choose the folder of storing mail file in the account settings of
thunderbird , or better use
imap if possible 8 so you dont have to download mail )
consult thunderbird help faqs,

if you got in trouble with firebird cache, you can set another folder
for cache in default.ini ( i thought this was the name , look in the
help files here too )
or minimize it, this should solve profile problems.

a good place for all this stuff may be the home directory of the user
on the samba server , or a place on clients computer local storage
if this fits to your security

the other thing that's puzzling is that SAMBA never creates the machine

manually on the command line it works fine, but that still doesn't get
my any further with joining the domain (Same error too fact).

Thanks for the help.

| I have a problem with my roaming profiles where they are becoming too

Options:
1. If you haven't already implemented folder redirection for Application
~ Data and My Documents, you may want to seriously consider it. This
will allow you to maintain the info on the server without having to
download the whole thing each time a user logs in.
See:
http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/Main/SambaThreeDomainController#Performance_Issues
Mine uses the above in conjunction with a mapped drive that points at
the users home directory. Cool thing about this is that a sneaky dude
can use this to share email between a Windows Thunderbird client and a
Linux Thunderbird client. That's how I got mine set up although it is a
bit tricky.
2. You can manually change the directories from within Thunderbird to a
directory that is local. The user will not be able to access his or her
mail on other machines of course. For example, one might create a
subdirectory of C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Documents\Application Data\[username]\Thunderbird and keep all of
Thunderbird's stuff here.

RE: [Samba] Pdf printer by mail with samba 3.0.9-1

2004-12-07 Thread Mitch (WebCob)
[Mitch says:] ok... after looking at Adam's and Hamish's work, and making it
fit our setup (file system, folders, etc.) I have it working - kinda ;-)

The printer is detectable, and when prompted, I selected an HP2500C PS
driver and boom - when I print, I get a PDF file in the expected place...
BUT, the printer shows up in the printers lists as "Access denied, unable to
connect"?!?!

Obviously I can connect or I wouldn't be able to print... So I guess it has
something to do with the control and queue info...

I looked at both your scripts, and config settings and came up with my own -
note though I have done nothing to activate lpd or change printcap - I
didn't see this mentioned - I assume it is a non-issue...

One of you had:
lpq command = lpq -P'%p'
lprm command = lprm -P'%p' %j
lppause command = lpc hold '%p' %j
lpresume command = lpc release '%p' %j
queuepause command = lpc stop '%p'
queueresume command = lpc start '%p'
And one had only lpq and lprm with nothing after the = - I tried both
ways?!?!

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi,
choose the folder of storing mail file in the account settings of
thunderbird , or better use
imap if possible 8 so you dont have to download mail )
consult thunderbird help faqs,

if you got in trouble with firebird cache, you can set another folder
for cache in default.ini ( i thought this was the name , look in the
help files here too )
or minimize it, this should solve profile problems.

a good place for all this stuff may be the home directory of the user on
the samba server , or a place on clients computer local storage
if this fits to your security

[Samba] Re: Printer driver auto upload.

2004-12-07 Thread Jim C.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1
I have a third party file manager that I use to get Administrator access
to XP just like you can with konqeror. It is called FileAnt and it
totally rocks... but I digress.
I've noticed that I can't browse to my print$ share despite the
following settings:
| [printers]
| comment = All Printers
| path = /var/spool/samba
| printer admin = root
| guest ok = Yes
| printable = Yes
| browseable = No
|
| [print$]
| comment = Printer Drivers
| path = /var/lib/samba/printers
| read only = No
Here is what is especially strange. If I click on the printer icon with
FileAnt I get this:
\\Enigma\::{2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D}
Enigma is the name of my server but what is the SID type info for?
If I paste it into an explorer box I get the printers subdirectory also.
Q: Is the printers subdirectory synonymous with \\Enigma\printer$ ? If
this is the case than I am actually browseing it however I can still not
create a directory despite the settings above.
I've also noticed something else strange with the perms:
| [EMAIL PROTECTED] 0 samba]$ ls -l printers
| total 20
| drwxrwsr-x 2 root adm 4096 Nov 9 12:35 W32ALPHA
| drwxrwsr-x 2 root adm 4096 Nov 9 12:35 W32MIPS
| drwxrwsr-x 2 root adm 4096 Nov 9 12:35 W32PPC
| drwxrwsr-x 3 root adm 4096 Dec 6 19:33 W32X86
| drwxrwsr-x 2 root adm 4096 Nov 9 12:35 WIN40
| [EMAIL PROTECTED] 0 samba]$
What is the S for? Somehow I doubt it is supposed to be there.
Last problem (that I know of) is that my admin users are all members of
a group called 'Domain Admins' but when I try to add this group to the
write list I get messed up output from testparm:
|write list = root, @'Domain, Admins'
The comma definately does not belong. Is this a cowinkydink of testparm
or will it actually be interpreted this way?

[Samba] smbclinet winpopup and alternatives?

2004-12-07 Thread Mitch (WebCob)
Ok this works:

/usr/local/samba/bin/smbclient -U Administrator DC1\\C$

I can sign in and do normal smbclient stuff.

I can't so far figure out how to send a message though.

/usr/local/samba/bin/smbclient -M DC1

/usr/local/samba/bin/smbclient -M DC1 -I 10.1.0.6

/usr/local/samba/bin/nmblookup DC1

querying DC1 on 10.255.255.255

10.1.0.6 DC1<00>

SOME.PUBLIC.ADDRESS DC1<00>

DC1 is running 2003 server.

Ideally, I'd like to send a message to a USER - not a machine - like you can
in Windows itself from Terminal Services Manager. With Terminal Server, a
machine may have many simultaneous logged in users.

Can this be done? What am I missing so far?

Thanks.

[Samba] Roaming profiles - exclude Application Data from roaming profile

2004-12-07 Thread Brett Carruthers
Hello All,
I have a problem with my roaming profiles where they are becoming too
large due to the Thunderbird mail accounts (stored by default) in
Application Data. What I would like to do is exclude this directory from
being part of the roaming profile. How can I do this?

Also, how hard is it to have some users not use a roaming profile but
others continuing to use a roaming profile? We have some laptop users
that don't need roaming but office staff which do benefit from the use
of roaming profiles.

Thanks in advance,
Brett Carruthers

Several times, in fact. So as the number of files grows, it churns more
and more. I'm sure most of it is in cache but the data still has to be
moved around in memory.

I know this is not necessary for writing/copying files with unix
semantics, but I wonder if the case-fiddling or any other Windows
imitative behavior is making this getdents64 orgy necessary. Is there
any way to disable it?

Not currently. This is something I'm working on - would you be
willing to test some prototype code once I'm done ?
I'd love to.
This file count also exposes some brokenness in the 'tar' functionality
of smbclient, perhaps in smbclient itself (my next workaround attempt).
I'll try to gather more info on that for whoever might be interested,
or patch it myself if possible.

In my opinion this is a completly un-acceptable way to install drivers
to a print server.
Im sure the "Greyed out"'ness is caused by some obscure registry

hinder anyone useing a samba server.

[Samba] Slow connections via Samba from XP and W2K

2004-12-07 Thread Brian Perkins
Hi All,

I posted this question a while back but stil haven't found a solution.
When my users use the server IP to connect to the Samba Server (OSX)
they are able to connect with no issues. However if they use the server
name there is a tremendous performance degradation. I noticed in the
logs the following error:

[2004/12/07
15:52:49,1]/SourceCache/samba/samba-59/samba/source/smbd/sesssetup.c:rep
ly_spnego_kerberos(248)

Username Domain\ComputerName$ is invalid on this system.

Could it be that the machine is trying to connect to the share as itself
then as the user? Thus causing the delay in the connection the folders.
Does anyone have an Idea of how to fix this?

Thanks,

Brian

[Mitch says:] I'll probably go with the route of just saving the files -
will tie email notification into our preferences DB (have to do that anyways

domain...)
Would be neat if winpopup-like messages could be sent to a specific user - I
know this can be done in Terminal Service Manager - is there a way to craft
a winpopup message in net or smbclient to hit a single logged on user? (in a
Terminal server env, a typical winpopup would hit everyone wouldn't it?)

[Samba] smbd reads entire directory when creating files?

2004-12-07 Thread Matt Mitchell
Apologies if this is a FAQ.
We are saddled with some directories full of production image files that
number in the hundreds of thousands to the millions. (Yes, I know this
is bad.) They reside on a couple of Win 2003 boxes that are flaky and
unreliable. I was hoping to copy them over to a Linux box running samba
but it is taking forever.

A strace on the smbd process receiving the files from the windows box
(it is mapped as a share on the 2k3 server) reveals that smbd is looking
up the entire directory (with getdents64) every time it writes a file.

I was going to post a bit of the strace output but it is extremely long
and (to my eyes, anyway) not very interesting. I can supply it to
anyone who is interested in seeing it.

Any suggestions appreciated. I also note that while using smbclient
instead of mapping the drive from the Windows box might help with this
copy, it will not help if we were to try to use this setup to replace
the 2k3 servers (the eventual goal). So any pointers in that direction,
while perhaps interesting for comparison, are not especially relevant.

greenville:~# smbd -V
Version 3.0.7-Debian
smb.conf is attached. Not much interesting in there, it is pretty much
stock. "vfs_ownerwrite" is a small VFS module I hacked up to do an
extra chown on a file that is written to the share (used in a common
PDC/Unix environment on some shared directories.) I am using the
"deadwood_ftp" share in this case, so the module is not involved.

[Samba] Unicode patches for smbfs

2004-12-07 Thread Sanjay Darisi

Does anybody know of unicode support patches for smbfs in 2.4.22 kernel
(default FC1 kernel)? I heard smbfs in kernel 2.6 supports unicode but before
going that far of upgrading kernel I'd like to patch the smbfs in 2.4.22 kernel
and see if it works for me. I know that cifs supports unicode but I couldn't
get that working on this default FC1 kernel. Anybody knows of unicode patches
for smbfs??

Thank you,
Sanjay.

A good example is the German Parliament - who gives a damn about this
AD featuritis, and they have 6000+ IT seats. ... You should discuss with
your management what you actually need. If all you need is NT4
functionality, Samba is Just Fine [TM].

Before anybody asks your management, come up with a suggestion for software
distribution and patch management for your XP machines. There are several
options that do work on Linux but SMS isn't one.

Correct - but do you need them? If you don't use M$ Exchange there is
little actual need for AD.

Which is more a question of your security policy than of M$ offerings.

As do login scripts stored on a Samba server. This is a silly one.

> 5. Software Application and Access Controls in Active Directory ?

Again - what are your actual security requirements. Don't buy (and pay!)
something you don't need.

...

Don't let these consultants bully you. Apparently, they do have a clue
about Windows and AD but ask them if they understand your actual needs.

Re: [Samba] 2003 Terminal Server profile storage problem (earliermessage was incomplete - sorry)

2004-12-07 Thread Paul Gienger

We were striving for live network stored access - no replication - have I
missed something else?

Oh, I guess I misunderstood. That's not the way Windows works by
default. Windows copies all of the profile locally then does all file
access on the client. At logoff that is copied back to the server.

That being said, there are ways around that behavior for certain
things. You can redirect certain directories, sorry for not knowing
which, but I know My Documents is one of them, with some registry
settings. For the full how-to I suggest looking at the How-To and ...
By Example books linked to from the documentation section of
www.samba.org. I personally don't use them due to the ratio of laptops
on my network, but there are a lot of people here that do with great
success.

Actually, changes to the smb.conf become live withing a few minutes,
you don't need to restart.

I think so, this sounds exactly like how *roaming* profiles behave.

Use a policy to redirect "My Documents" out of the profile an to a
'real' share somewhere like \\{servername}\homedir. The same can be
done with other folders in the roaming profile (see the Samba Guide).
You'll still have roaming profile but the important parts will be live
and the profile will be smaller.

[Samba] unable to change password in winxp using ctrl+alt+delete

2004-12-07 Thread jason lee
Hello i am new to using the mailing list system.

I have my samba 3.0.9 configured as a PDC in my home network, and winxp
professional are installed on the clients with service pack 2 updated.

There seems to be a problem when the users try to change their password under
winxp and it says "you do not have permission to change your password"

I have unix password sync turned on, and the user unix passwords are not locked.

I did a search on the internet and it was one of microsoft's update fix that
caused this problem. however, i have found no solution to this problem.

It'd be great if there is a way for users to change their password in winxp on
their own, so i dont have to do it for them.

if there is a way to search for the answer to my question, please let me know.

I have tried asking in freenode irc channel and searching on the internet and
found no solution.

please let me know if more information needs to be provided.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Perhaps you should try messing with this setting in the share you're
having problems with. From the man page:

csc policy (S)
This stands for /client-side caching policy/, and specifies how
clients capable of offline caching will cache the files in the
share. The valid values are: manual, documents, programs, disable.
These values correspond to those used on Windows servers.
For example, shares containing roaming profiles can have offline
caching disabled using *csc policy = disable*.
   Default: //csc policy/ = manual /
   Example: //csc policy/ = programs /

[Samba] 2003 Terminal Server profile storage problem (earlier message was incomplete - sorry)

2004-12-07 Thread Mitch (Bitblock)
Sorry - sent before completed.- my apologies for the dup.

I've got Samba set up with the homes share configured.

I've added the settings under the Terminal Services Profile tab of a test
user.

When I log in, the folder specified is created, but it doesn't receive any
data files until the user logs off.

In the NT event viewer, I see :

Event Type: Warning

Event Source:Userenv

Event Category: None

Event ID: 1525

Date:2004.12.07

Time:10:41:39 AM

User:TSDEMO\Wayne

Computer: DC1

Description:

Windows has detected that Offline Caching is enabled on the Roaming Profile
share - to avoid potential profile corruption, Offline Caching must be
disabled on shares where roaming user profiles are stored.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Reading that gets me here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;325838

&sd=ee

The error is apparently that as Samba doesn't support telling 2003 NOT to
cache network data offline, 2003 DOES THIS by default, which means I'm not
really network storing my files. I've got a cached-roaming profile
happening.

Is there a way to fix this?

I don't want to ignore the warning as it's not giving me the desired results
;-)

Thanks!

[Samba] ADS File Sharing issue

2004-12-07 Thread Dege, Robert C.

Hello,

I have been assigned the gracious honor of migrating all of our linux systems
(with samba) from a domain environment to our new fancy schmancy Active
Directory environment. We do not have any intentions of using ADS for login
authentication. We only want to establish a transparent file sharing
environment between our linux systems & Windows 2000 systems. I have been
successfully upgrading our RedHat 9.0 systems, until I ran into a problem with
the latest system (ralphie).

After configuring the system, when I attempt to access any share on ralphie, I
am prompted for a username and password. This automatically implies a broken
connection since the share window should automatically appear. When checking
the samba logs, I found the following error messages:

[2004/12/06 14:36:51, 1] libads/kerberos_verify.c:ads_secrets_verify_ticket(155)
ads_secrets_verify_ticket: failed to fetch machine password
[2004/12/06 14:36:51, 1] smbd/sesssetup.c:reply_spnego_kerberos(173)
  Failed to verify incoming ticket!

here are the steps I followed to upgrade ralphie:

*) Remove old samba-2.x rpms & install samba-3.0.9-1 that I downloaded from the
samba site.
*) Upgrade old krb5 rpms to ver. 1.3.4 (I used src RPMS & rebuild them for this
machine)
*) Use the tailored krb5.conf file & smb.conf file.
*) modify smb.conf & change netbios name.
*) Add Netbios name to Active Directory (on the Windows side)
*) /usr/kerberos/bin/kinit [EMAIL PROTECTED] --> (was successful)
*) net -Uadministrator ads join --> (was successful)
*) Start samba service.

These steps worked on my other linux systems, so I'm confused why ralphie is
not working. Does anyone have some suggestions or any ideas?

Yes, it is included with just about every Linux distribution: Ghostscript.

We just install an HP 2000C (thats color) Postscript driver and aim it to a
script that writes the postscript to a file, runs ps2pdf14 on it, and sends the
output back to the user as an e-mail attachment.

Yes, so long as you have nsswitch and pam set up correctly. It sounds
like you don't.

Pam appears to be setup correctly. At this time winbindd.log has this:

Which seems to be a kerberos problem. However, kinit is working
properly. Also ldapsearch -Y GSSAPI works, and adds additional kerberos
tickets, so that I find it difficult to believe it's a kerberos
problem. I have a feeling it's a smb.conf problem, but I cannot locate it.

Same as setting up samba for anything. The "mail pdf printer" is just a
printer as far as Samba is concerned, queing the job just happens to
invoke a script that does the ->pdf->mail thing rather than submitting it
to an actual print queue.

This is what I use, it is a simple script called from smb.conf. I have
saved the script in /usr/bin and made it executable.

#!/bin/bash

# SAMBADIR is the path for windows clients
# FINALFILE is the name of the finished pdf
# MYDOMAIN is the mail domain to mail to
DATE=`date +%H%M%S-%d%m%y`
OUTDIR=/data1/fileroot/General/pdfs
SAMBADIR="\\\dataserver\general\pdfs"
FINALFILE=$USER-$DATE.pdf
MYDOMAIN="mydomain.com"
ps2pdf $PSFILE $OUTDIR/$DATE-$USER.temp
## Very basic logging
#echo "$USER executed smbpdfmaker" >> /tmp/pdflog.log
mv $OUTDIR/$DATE-$USER.temp $OUTDIR/$FINALFILE
chmod 700 $OUTDIR/$FINALFILE
echo "Hi $USER, the PDF version of the file you just printed is located
here: $SAMBADIR\\$FINALFILE It is only readable by you at the moment, so

folder, or email it. Please don't reply to this email. Always look twice

Make sure the clients use a postscript driver (I think we used an HP
colour laser PS driver, but there are lots that work just as well) -
when they print to it, it mails them a link to the saved pdf (we were
mailing pdfs directly, but this way was better because they would only
save the file from the email anyway)

Hope that helps!
PS, of course, you should already have AD integration set up and a mail
server with the same usernames!

Re: [Samba] ADS Authentication

Hi,
2 points:
1.) use the smb.conf which gives you a working wbinfo.
2.) this sounds like missconfigured pam to me.
-you have to tell pam that winbind is "sufficient" for "auth" and
"account" with the lines
Here's the /etc/pam.d/logon file info. This must be working because of
the dual authentication when logging in at the terminal. In fact if you
open a new terminal sessions and log in there, the primary [F1] screen
will show "pam_winbind[451]: user 'root' granted access".

Further, when attempting to log on with an ADS account, although the log
in fails, pam_winbind grants access.
Here's the file info:

#
# $FreeBSD: src/etc/pam.d/login,v 1.16 2003/06/14 12:35:05 des Exp $
#
# PAM configuration for the "login" service
#
# auth
authrequiredpam_nologin.so no_warn
authsufficient pam_self.so no_warn
authinclude system
authsufficient /usr/local/lib/pam_winbind.so
# account
account requisite pam_securetty.so
account include system
account sufficient /usr/local/lib/pam_winbind.so
# session
session include system
# password
passwordinclude system
"account sufficient pam_winbind.so" and
"auth sufficient pam_winbind.so"
this drops the need for the local posix-account.
-And for the "auth" modify the line with pam_unix.so to read like
"auth required pam_unix.so use_first_pass nullok"
this gets you rid of the second password-prompt.
hope it helps.

Yes, so long as you have nsswitch and pam set up correctly. It sounds
like you don't.

Well, I've followed every how to that I can find. I have some
strangeness. When I log into the unix terminal I have to supply 2
root passwords...the posix one and the one for root in ADS (they're
different)to login. The same for a user with both posix and ADS
accounts. Non posix account users cannot login with an ADS account
to the terminal.

Depending on changes to the smb.conf file I get wild results with
winbindd. One config gives users and groups with a wbinfo -u/g
command. Others error out with differing reasons for the errors.

I'm really not sure where the error is...it should be working, but it
is not.

Jeremy.

RE: [Samba] Pdf printer by mail with samba 3.0.9-1

Same as setting up samba for anything. The "mail pdf printer" is just a
printer as far as Samba is concerned, queing the job just happens to
invoke a script that does the ->pdf->mail thing rather than submitting it
to an actual print queue.

[Mitch says:] Sorry for butting in - and sorry if this is a dumb question -
but are you guys saying there is an existing PDF printer / spooler combo
that provides a PDF output option under Samba? Is this a 3rd party app or
where do I get started looking at this?

Thanks!
