Re: 6.5 : aliases vs postfix/generic
ohh.. it appears that "aliases" is for local users. So if i need to use this file (/etc/aliases) to forward to the "outside world" i need to use "virtual" file as pointed out here <https://pergento.wordpress.com/2012/01/10/postfix-relayhost-and-aliases/> ... actually... the prehistoric times "~/.forward" solution still works great. Gents, what is the difference between /etc/aliases and /etc/postfix/generic ? and why aliases is been ignored by postfix despite main.cf having: alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases alias_database = hash:/etc/aliases entries enabled? i have root:mypreciousem...@xxx.com in aliases, but maillog is clearly not happy with it
6.5 : smartd vs smartmontools
Gents, i'm a bit confused about the usage of smartd and smartmontools. smartmontools bring smartd as part of the package. Smartd can be added to run levels. But smartmontools - can *not* be added to a runlevel and, as such, does NOT control the smartd daemon... i'm right or ...? i'm confused because various blogs seemed to indicate that smatmontools control the smartd's start parameters ( https://blog.shadypixel.com/monitoring-hard-drive-health-on-linux-with-smartmontools/ ) , but i failed to find any confirmation of this in the current smartmontools documentation ( doesn't mean it is not there). For example the widely referred "#start_smartd=yes" in the /etc/default/smartmontools is not there ( smartmontools-5.43-1.el6.x86_64 ). for now i just did the "old" way - added smartd to run on 235, but just curious what's the deal here. Thank you AZ

Re: SL: not a good choice as a workstation
With all due respect this is not a valid compare. We can compare sl to centos etc. I run both (fedora and sl 6.5) as workstations and cant complain . Sl is solid - wife likes it and cost to maintain it for me is 0. Fedora - depends what I do, if compile various projects - yes easier then sl (because of newer api) but once updates hit... uhhh. I might spend time fixing that. In short - sl is stable as promised and fedora is brand new -as promised. Now, I think going forward, we will see hopefully happier midium in centos versions. hello, is there a printer manager for XFCE that shows the USB attached printers? Or is it me doing somethign funky, because that ( http://www.rpmfind.net//linux/RPM/fedora/15/x86_64/xfprint-4.6.0-6.fc15.x86_64.html) has 3 different apps ( in GUI) - one in Settings two in "Accessories". Well, I just looked at the fan :) But I had a PC not a laptop. Tho you can still pop it open I hope. Another way is to watch the temp changes in BIOS or use whatever the control soft comes with the card. I have nvidia and they supply some "nvidia-settings" soft that displays the temp. Yes. And (from very quick Google search) appears to be part of cdrtools, which seemed to be (or used to be?) In some kind of infringement of patent law... But at the same time search for (rpm ) cdrtools didn't bring anything but search for wodim did. I'm guessing that the last has been blessed by redhat lawyers. Anyway. You can probably fix it. Most terminal programs display text in 24 rows of 80 characters. Hello, how do i add "switch user" capability to XFCE? it seemed that in 4.8 (at least ubuntu team) had to add it. But i can't find any solution for RH. it seemed that i need to have xfswitch, but found nothing in the regular repos. Hello, i'm not sure what i changed ( as far as i remember - nothing), but since about 3 days ago, the lower panel ( panel 2) started dissappearing from the screen upon startup. In order to get it back i had to un-check " Show and hide panel" in panel preferences. that would make it appear . Subsequent setting of the "Show and hide panel" flag will make it hide - as expected. It's quite annoying, but i'm not sure where to look. thank you Andrew

gys, how can i send the /var/log/messages on a designated terminal? i remember some many years ago i saw on of SAs having messages file to 11 or 10 terminal from the moment machine booted. The gain - they just switch to it instead of typing "tail ". Hope makes sence and thank you in advance. Andrew

If you have any binary no-source applications that are not available in a X86-64 version, you must install sufficient compatibility libraries (and support software) so that the platform can execute the IA-32 applications under the X86-64 environment. Note that in almost all cases, a .so for a X86-64 instruction set is not compatible with the "same" .so for an IA-32 application. Yasha Karant

There isn't a good way to move from i686 system to x86-64 with upgrade. Sure, it can be performed as a big hack, but really it's not something one should do, and it's not supported in any way. If you are fine with using i686 system, then you usually don't need to do anything on such hardware upgrade - the only typical minor problem can be with ide controller detection (driver for new controller is not present in old initrd). It can be fixed in various ways - for example, I prefer booting rescue mode, going to console, mounting old system, chrooting into it and running mkinitrd or reinstalling kernel. If you want to move to x86-64, then you have to reinstall system, as in real reinstall, not upgrade; depending on your partition scheme /home might be preserved, or you might need full backup, clean reinstall and then restore of parts you need. Or, if your VG has enough free space, you can just create new LVs during installation, install there then copy data you need from old LVs. Installing from usb should be no problem, be that usb flash drive or usb cdrom. -- Vladimir

-- useless story on as yet another attempt to get my not working usb to work, i decided to dust of the internals of my Sempron based PC. Despite 2 kids running around and trying to get into the PC. I managed to carefully take it apart. Take a CPU fan off and clean it all out. after all these operations i became very proud of myself - i managed not to brake anything and didn't let 2 and 1 yo to get their hands on the parts. AND they have not been screaming at me for that %). anyhow , i started to put all parts back together... and then i dropped a damn CPU with the sink on the table. Just like that - just dropped it. anyway, my wife's tweezers became handy to straighten out the dozen of bended pins. And another 40 minutes later, when i' was proudly observing meticulously fixed pins, I made another retarded attempt to put the CPU in.. I ended up with a broken out pin. Needless to describe the rainbow of the emotions I went thru ... Next 3 hours i spent on fatwallet. the results are pretty cool - i wasted $106 for Phenom X4 + MSI NF725GM motherboard, $15 for the 4Gb of DDR3 RAM and ~$6 for a fan with a sink. Since i'm old "dude" and still remember i386 ringing ~$1400 the idea of holding 4 core CPU for $49.99 make me "philosophical". another amazing thing - all parts fitted nicely in my 7 yo box and i managed not to drop, bent, destroy anything. --useless story off all this brings me to a simple question - how do i move from i686 SL 6.1 that was running on Sempron to Phenom ( which is 64 and 4 cores ) system? another trick - the new motherboard has only one IDE controller, so i can't run CD/DVD and 2 IDEs at the same time. The root is on LV which resides on these two IDE drives. BIOS has an option to boot from USB. I figured that if i can place image on usb then i can probably painlessly upgrade am i missing smth in my overloaded with tequila mind? Thank you guys! Andrew

odd permissions on mounted disk
i think it's sort of stupid question, but after the latest kernel update i observed the following behavior. i don't imply that the said update is to blame. It's quite possible that i don't know what i'm talking about. so: 1. usera mounts the DVD 2. usera issues "vobcopy" 3. vobcopy failes with no obvious error. 4. root remounts the dvd 5. issues same vobcopy 6. disk gets copied I do know that i copied a dozen or so of my DVDs ( kids just love to use them as flying disks ) and i used "usera", not root for this purposes. I also know that i didn't make any configuration changes between "then" and "now" = [az@server media]$ cat /etc/fstab # # /etc/fstab /dev/cardreader/CF /media/cardreader/CFauto defaults,users,noauto,rw0 0 /dev/cardreader/MS /media/cardreader/MSauto defaults,users,noauto,rw0 0 /dev/cardreader/SM /media/cardreader/SMauto defaults,users,noauto,rw0 0 /dev/dvd/media/dvd auto defaults,users,noauto,rw0 0 [az@server media]$ cd /media/ [az@server media]$ ls -l total 4 drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4096 Jul 3 19:24 dvd [az@server media]$ mount /dev/dvd [az@server media]$ mount /dev/sr0 on /media/dvd type udf (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev) [az@server media]$ ls -l ./ total 2 dr-xr-xr-x 4 4294967295 4294967295 136 Oct 29 23:43 dvd = I'm not sure i ever saw the permissions set like this. Any ideas are welcome. Oh, and i almost forgot, (still "blaming" the latest kernel update) out of nowhere a regular user now can _write_ to dvd... ha?

If we ignore it, we shall all be in the soup. It's a rant. By continuing to rant, you discourage people from paying attention to such issues where and when they *are* relevant, such as (hopefully) the material below. A discussion of the UEFI technology and its direct effects on Linux or Scientific Linux based hardware management might be useful. What are our favorite upstream vendor's plans? And ave you actually laid hands on the technology or attempted to use it, to see the implications of it. For example, it avoids the "63 block" DOS compatiliby chunk of space at the beginning of your available disk space, avoiding the 4096 byte block alignment problem for both real and virtualized hardware on more modern hard drives. And boot loaders have suffered from a great deal of awkwardness in backwards compatiblity requirements, for example with the 8 1023 cylinder limitation with earlier versions of LILO and motherboards, and with various other complex schema to work around legacy requirements. So a new, well defined boot loader architecture can make eminent sense. The problem is the lockdown features. It's completely understandable that people who buy computers, and maintain them, do *not* want arbitrary script kiddies or laptop thieves to be able to boot a live CD or USB stick and read everything off their drive. My Windows and other friends are *shocked* when I walk in with a live CD, including ones very like Scientific Linux's, and help them recover lost data or change relevant passwords. In general, if I can access your hardware, I own your data. The need for freedom and access to our own tools conflicts with this. Being able to change a kernel or OS freely is vital to developers, students, and people who need their tools modified for reasons software vendors don't agree with. It's also *vital* for anonymity. Too many systems record too much data. But this conflicts with desires for security. We've seen things like this play out with SELinux. The toolkit is powerful, flexible, and so unpredictable and poorly integrated and complex that most developers would actively *fire* me if I tried to make them work with it. I'll be very curious to see if UEFI's vaunted security features suffer from the same flaws in the long term. Support for UEFI *is* built into recent releases of grub and various virtualization technologies, so I don't anticipate it being too much of a Linux issue unless the lock down features are enforced.

She only needs a browser, office suite, PDF manipulation, and Thunderbird/Lightning -- she does not need a heavy duty graphics/visualisation or development unit. (Firefox, OpenOffice, Thunderbird/Lightning, VirtualBox running MS Win for MS Win specific applications, etc., suffice for her needs.) We have seen several discounted/sale/close-out laptops with dual layer DVD burners, etc., of a size she will accept (smallish screen, low mass unit). I insist on at least a battery that can be replaced without disassembling the laptop, and a mains supply power plug that is supported by iGo. I have made a bootable DVD from the current standalone (no install) bootable SL 6.1 IA-32 image (a bit larger than 2 Gbyte -- I do not recall the exact file name but there were only two choices -- a smaller one and the "full" one -- I chose full). On none of the test machines did the 802.11 interface activate, nor is there any sign of Gnome NetworkManager (I prefer NetworkManager for end-user machines that must go to the field). My intention was to use the SL 6.1 stand alone IA-32 as a way of testing that all needed drivers are present in the "stock" image, as I know that other than in those nations in which Microsoft has been found to be a monopoly and meaningful remedies enforced, some IA-32 hardware only has a MS Win driver, forcing the unpleasant use of NDIS (that I plan to avoid). I could go back to the inventory of what is supplied on the image file that I burned, but to save me time, does anyone know if the 802.11 drivers are part of that image? Is NetworkManager? Is the image configured to connect automatically (including activating the 802.11 interface)? The DVD did boot, Gnome did come up, and the sound test indicated that the sound interface was recognized -- but no 802.11 and thus no Internet (via DHCP).
