[scifinoir2] Shyamalan Blasts Disney Execs in New Book

Shyamalan Blasts Disney Execs in New Book
A new book, The Man Who Heard Voices: Or, How M. Night Shyamalan Risked
His Career on a Fairy Tale, due to be published on July 20, will
describe director M. Night Shyamalan's conflict with Disney studio
executives and his decision to leave the company that had produced his
successfully thrillers, beginning with 1999's The Sixth Sense, the Los
Angeles Times reported today (Friday). The book, by Sports Illustrated
writer Michael Bamberger, is reportedly particularly tough on Disney
production President Nina Jacobson, quoting Shyamalan as saying that he
had witnessed the decay of her creative vision right before his own
wide-open eyes. Later Shyamalan says that over the years, he had
concluded that Disney no longer valued individualism ... no longer
valued fighters. Eventually he left the studio after Jacobson and
others assailed his script for Lady in the Water, which was eventually
produced by Warner Bros. and is due to be released on July 21.

[scifinoir2] Church Bulks Up for 'Spider-Man 3'

Part Smallville, part Roswell and part After School Special, a
new ABC Family series follows the experiences and misadventures of a
teenage boy, Kyle XY, who mysteriously wakes up in a forest unclothed
and covered with a mucouslike substance.
Through largely unnecessary voice-overs, Kyle (former model Matt
Dallas), explains that he is seeing and feeling things for the first
time.
After Kyle has a brief stay in a juvenile detention center,
psychologist Nicole Trager (Marguerite MacIntyre) brings him home to
her unwelcoming family: boy-crazy Lori (April Matson), obnoxious Josh
(Jean-Luc Bilodeau) and personality-deprived husband Stephen (Bruce
Thomas).
Nicole, however, is the perfect Disney mom -- patient, loving and
just a little sexy -- and eventually prevails on her family to accept
the handsome undocumented alien into their midst.
Actually, Kyle XY also has a lot to do with persuading family members
to let him stay. He is both a beauty and a geek, able to make girls
take notice, reprogram computers and recover a porn magazine
confiscated by Nicole.
In addition to all that, he lacks any trace of a belly button. In
some parts of the country, this might be enough to form the basis of
a new religion with Kyle as head prophet.
Kyle XY is not without its charms. By creating a character without
guile or pretense, one filled with curiosity and acute powers of
observation, writers Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber can comment on
social conventions and institutions without getting preachy. At the
same time, they set up a mystery that, one hopes, will not be solved
anytime soon.
Where Smallville and Roswell have dark elements, Kyle XY has a
lighter sitcomish sensibility. A suspicious stranger in a pickup
truck is keeping an eye on him, but Kyle is less a sitting duck than
a duck out of water. He never can be sure whether his good intentions
will embarrass, amuse or save the day for those around him.
Those expecting a G-rated show might be a little put off by a bed-
sharing scene with Lori and her boyfriend of the week (a line is
awkwardly inserted to imply they didn't go all the way) or another
scene in which Josh gets ready to spank the monkey.
Although young audiences might especially appreciate these scenes,
they don't obviate the need for more character development.
Technical credits are fine, though the production, filmed in Canada,
looks like it adhered to a tight budget.

That's one of the few ways I kinda envy actors: they get to train and be
trained in a wide range of physical things as part of the job. I have to make a
concerted effort to hit the gym at my job, and since I'm IT there's always the
possibility some dopey user will try to find me to reset their screensaver or
something. How neat to be able to develop a toned body, endurance, agility,
and even learn some cool fighting skills as part of a job! I look at Keanu
Reeves for the Matrix: the guy's my age and could do a split before his
training was done, and learned a lot of martial arts moves. True, it's
movie-fighting, not like the real thing, but can't deny the shape he was in.
Same for Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai. And Tobey McGuire gets a great
regime of muscle-building and flexibility enhancement for his role as the
Webslinger.
Must be nice to get to a level where you have all manner of trainers, clothing
and hair advisers, and nutritionists to help you be the best you can be all the

[scifinoir2] Rowling says 2 characters die in final Potter book

Rowling says 2 characters die in final Potter book

Mon Jun 26, 2006

LONDON (Reuters) - Children's author J.K. Rowling has revealed that at
least two characters will die in the seventh and final installment of her
bestselling Harry Potter series, but was careful not to say who.

Children and adults are expected to rush and buy the final Harry Potter
novel in their tens of millions when it is complete, and if the
publication of the sixth book is anything to go by, secrecy surrounding
the plot will be tight.

Rowling has already said that the final chapter of the seventh book was
written long ago.

The final chapter is hidden away, although it's now changed very
slightly, she said in an interview broadcast on Monday on Britain's
Channel 4. One character got a reprieve, but I have to say two die that I
didn't intend to die.

When asked to be more specific, she added: No, I'm not going to commit
myself, because I don't want the hate mail or anything else.

She did explain that she understood an author's desire to kill off the
main character of a successful series.

I've never been tempted to kill him (Harry) off before the end of book
seven, because I always planned seven books and that's where I want to go.

I can completely understand, however, the mentality of an author who
thinks 'Well, I'm going to kill them off because that means there can be
no non-author-written sequels ... so it will end with me, and after I'm
dead and gone they won't be able to bring back the character'.

Rowling, 40, wrote the first Harry Potter adventure when she was an
unemployed single mother, but has gone on to become one of the richest
authors in history with a personal fortune estimated at more than $1
billion.

The Harry Potter series has sold an estimated 300 million copies worldwide.

[scifinoir2] Foam still vexes NASA after fixes to shuttle

2006-06-26 Thread brent wodehouse
http://today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=scienceNewsstoryID=2006-06-26T121322Z_01_N25304262_RTRUKOC_0_US-SPACE-SHUTTLE-SAFETY.xml

Foam still vexes NASA after fixes to shuttle

Mon Jun 26

By Irene Klotz

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - It's been 3.5 years and hundreds of
millions of dollars since the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated. Yet
NASA faces the same vexing problem that doomed the orbiter when it tries
to launch shuttle Discovery on Saturday.

Insulation foam - it seems a trivial part of launching a complex
spacecraft. But the problem of falling foam has perplexed the U.S. space
agency capable of doing what no other country does, landing a space
freighter like an airplane.

Outfitted with a second round of upgrades to its fuel tank following the
2003 Columbia disaster, Discovery is on the launch pad and scheduled to
fly at 3:49 p.m. EDT (1949 GMT) on July 1.

If successful, NASA plans up to 17 more shuttle missions, including a
possible servicing call to the Hubble Space Telescope, before the shuttle
fleet is retired in 2010.

If not, and if the U.S. space agency were to lose a third shuttle to
disaster, NASA Administrator Michael Griffin has said he would likely pull
the plug on all future missions.

NASA lost Challenger on January 28, 1986, due to the failure of an O-ring
seal on a solid rocket booster.

Then Columbia disintegrated during re-entry on February 1, 2003, when its
wing was damaged by foam debris that fell from its external fuel tank
during launch.

The 1.6-pound (0.7 kg) chunk of insulating foam smashed into the ship's
left wing. It pierced a hole in the orbiter's protective heat shield that
caused its breakup and the loss of all seven crewmembers aboard as
Columbia slammed into the atmosphere on its fatal re-entry toward Earth.

In July 2005, NASA launched shuttle Discovery to test-fly a new fuel tank
design - but the fix turned out to be nearly as troublesome.

More foam insulation, including a piece as large as one pound (0.4 kg),
dislodged as the shuttle rocketed toward orbit. Luckily, none of the
debris struck the shuttle.

NEW TECHNIQUES

NASA has since implemented new manufacturing techniques and removed two
long foam windshields that tests showed were not necessary to protect
cables and hoses running along the outside of the tank. The ramp-shaped
structures had been used since the first shuttle flight in 1981.

Engineers have also reworked wiring for heaters that were installed as
part of the first redesign. The heaters replaced foam insulation where the
tank is attached to the shuttle.

After Discovery's 2005 flight, NASA discovered that insulation around the
wiring had trapped air, which turned to a liquid in the cold and filled
tiny voids in the foam. As the pressure changed during launch, the liquid
transitioned to gas and popped off pieces of foam.

But the foam debris issue still has not been resolved. And NASA's top
safety official, along with its chief engineer, both recently voted
against clearing Discovery for its July 1 launch. They were overruled by
NASA administrator Michael Griffin and other top managers.

The shuttles have flown 114 space missions, and only two have ended in
tragedy. But 14 astronauts died in the Challenger and Columbia disasters
and two of the five shuttles built were lost. They cost around $2 billion
each and are viewed as irreplaceable.

As engineers learned more about the physics of foam, NASA realized it was
not going to be possible to manufacture a shed-free tank.

The foam is needed to prevent ice buildups as the shuttle sits awaiting
liftoff with cryogenic propellants in its fuel tank. Ice can be even more
dangerous than foam if it breaks off during launch and hits the spacecraft.

Foam will come off. There is no way around that. It's the very nature of
the material and the way that we use it and the way we apply it, said
John Chapman, who oversees the external tank project at NASA's Marshall
Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.

But Chapman said steps had been taken to minimize foam falling off and
prevent the dislodging of chunks large enough to damage the shuttle's heat
shield.

The shuttle lifted off under the gaze of dozens of sensors and cameras
last year and will have even more this year.

It also has been outfitted with stronger windows, beefed up tires and
landing gear and more than 5,000 new cloth fillers between the most
critical heat-resistant ceramic tiles on its belly.

During Discovery's previous flight, photographs taken by space station
crewmembers as the shuttle approached showed two fillers slightly
protruding from the smooth surface.

Engineers grew concerned that the tiny misalignment could cause the
shuttle to heat up earlier than expected during its plunge through the
atmosphere and possibly damage its heat shield. The shuttle crew conducted
an unplanned spacewalk to remove the cloth strips.

Cameras, both aboard the shuttle and on the ground, will photograph and
videotape every second of

And, despite the protests of two top NASA officials, they're still sending the

California pelicans held on suspicion of being drunk
Sun Jun 25, 2006 1:14 AM BST

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Four pelicans suspected of being drunk on sea algae
were being tested at a Southern California wildlife centre on Saturday after
one of them crashed headlong into a car.

Three of the California brown pelicans were found wandering dazed in the
streets of Laguna Beach after another pelican struck a vehicle's windscreen
on a nearby coast road.

It suffered internal injuries and a long gash in its pouch and was
undergoing toxicology tests.

Officials at the Wildlife Care Centre said the seabirds may have been under
the influence of algae in the ocean that can produce domoic acid poisoning
when eaten.

The other pelicans were rounded up after assistant wildlife director Lisa
Birkle warned the public to be on the lookout for birds acting drunk,
disoriented or being in an unusual place.

Shellfish tainted with domoic acid was thought to be the culprit behind a
1961 attack of seabirds on people and cars in the oceanside California town
of Capitola that inspired Alfred Hitchcock's horror movie The Birds.

Subject: [scifinoir2] New series Hex on BBC America Tonight

Well, this caught me by surprise. BBC America has a new supernatural series,
which has its two-hour premiere tonight. It deals with a young woman at a
boarding school who discovers she's a witch with TK powers. The trailer put
me somewhat in mind of Witchblade. The headmaster at the school is played
by Colin Salmon, who's been in the last couple of Bond films. Although all
blurbs about shows are of coruse complimentary, it was still nice to see the
Brother described as One of Britain's most renowned actors. Here's some
info on the series, followed by a short bio on Salmon. I provided a link to
a site called Spacecast, which actually gives more detailed info on the
show and actors than the BBC America site does.

http://www.spacecast.com/microsites/hex/

Set in a remote British boarding school, Hex is the story of Cassandra
Cassie Hughes (Christina Cole), a shy social outcast who discovers she has
unique powers that provide a terrifying link to the past.

Longing to be popular, but only truly loved by her lesbian roommate Thelma

the in crowd at her cliquish English boarding school, Medenham Hall.
Thelma, who couldn't care less about being ostracized, is appalled at
Cassie's attempts to fit in with the superficial classmates who treat them
so badly.

While stopping for a cigarette in one of the old buildings on campus,
Cassie's future is forever altered when she unearths hidden ancient
artifacts - a discovery that leaves her cursed with supernatural powers that
have their roots deep in Medenham Hall's history. As she begins to recognize
the extent of her new abilities, Cassie is bewildered and terrified by the
visions that haunt her. She soon discovers that there are certain advantages
to being a student endowed with mystical powers, when she learns how to
manipulate the people and situations around her.

However, Cassie realizes that her new gift comes with a price. Her tragic
fate is sealed with the appearance of Azazeal (Michael Fassbender, Band of
Brothers), the leader of a group of fallen angels who were banished from
heaven for tasting the pleasures of mortal women. Azazeal kidnaps Thelma in
a bid to get to the one human sacrifice he's really concerned with, Cassie.
But when Cassie confronts him and demands to see her friend, it's Thelma who
pays the ultimate price.

Thomas Haden Church was shocked when producers of Spider-man #
 insisted
he work out intensely for over a year to prepare for a part in the
 film.
The 45-year-old plays the villain Sandman and found it a shocking
 change
after having to gain weight for his role in Sideways. He explains,
 When
I met with the (Spider-Man 3) producers and director last year they

said, 'We probably need you to get in a specific physical shape for
 the
movie. Do you mind taking off your shirt?' I took off my shirt and
 the
director Sam Raimi said, 'We're going to need you to gain about 100

pounds of muscle. You've come here today with the physique of a
 fishwife
and that doesn't fit into our scheme...' I gained a bunch of weight
 for
Sideways, because the director wanted me to appear bloated. I
 thought,
'I'll make a special cocktail of beer and ice cream in the blender
 and
it will suit this purpose quite nicely!' Church began his
 intensive
training for the role and is now in top-form. He adds jokingly, I
 had
to start working out last year, it's been about 16 months of five

RE: [scifinoir2] Shyamalan Blasts Disney Execs in New Book

2006-06-26 Thread Keith Johnson
Yeah, Jobs and Pixar ceeded all rights to their Pixar properties to Disney.
Disney owns the rights to such hits as the Toy Story franchises, Finding
Nemo, etc. This gives them rights to both grab dough based on merchandising,
and create sequels. When Jobs was unhappy with the deal, Eisner decided to
play hardball. He created a whole new animation studio, hiring dozens of
animators. There were even fully created scripts for a Toy Story 3, and
first drafts of sequels for Nemo and The Incredibles. But once Eisner--who
seems to be one of the most disliked execs in recent history--left, the two
companies were able to come to terms. Disney managed to retain about eighty
percent of the animators they hired for the defunct new studio. There are
some bad feelings from the nascent Disney team at having its scripts and
such being run by Pixar, but in the main all the animators are cool and
understand it was a power struggle at the top. I think Disney's so bummed
and worried at having lost their pre-eminent domination they were more than
willing to let Pixar's winning ways take over.

I just wish that so-called traditional 2D animation were still popular.

It also has been outfitted with stronger windows, beefed up tires and
landing gear and more than 5,000 new

Rowling: Two 'Potter' Characters Will Die

LONDON (AP) - Author J.K. Rowling said two characters will die in the last
installment of her boy wizard series, and she hinted Harry Potter might not
survive either.

I have never been tempted to kill him off before the final because I've
always planned seven books, and I want to finish on seven books, Rowling
said Monday on TV here.

I can completely understand, however, the mentality of an author who
thinks, `Well, I'm gonna kill them off because that means there can be no
non-author-written sequels. So it will end with me, and after I'm dead and
gone they won't be able to bring back the character'.

Rowling declined to commit herself about Harry, saying she doesn't want to
receive hate mail.

The last book is not finished. But I'm well into it now. I wrote the final
chapter in something like 1990, so I've known exactly how the series is
going to end, she said.

Some characters might die, but the blockbuster movie franchise lives on.
Warner Bros. Pictures has announced that the fifth installment will be
released in U.S. theaters, including Imax screens, on July 13, 2007.

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, directed by David Yates, the
teenage Harry continues to battle the evil Lord Voldemort (again played by
Ralph Fiennes) and his followers. Daniel Radcliffe is returning as the title
character, and Emma Watson and Rupert Grint reprise their roles as Hermione
and Ron. Oscar-nominated actress Imelda Staunton plays the malicious, frumpy
Professor Dolores Umbridge, who tortures Harry.

In her Monday interview on the Richard and Judy show, Rowling said people
are sometimes shocked to hear that she wrote the end of book seven before
she had a publisher for the first book in the series.

The final chapter is hidden away, although it's now changed very slightly.
One character got a reprieve. But I have to say two die that I didn't intend
to die, she said. A price has to be paid. We are dealing with pure evil
here. They don't target extras do they? They go for the main characters.
Well, I do.

Rowling is the richest woman in Britain - wealthier than even the queen -
with a fortune estimated by Forbes magazine last year at more than $1
billion.

Whatever she writes next, Rowling is sure of one thing: It won't be as
successful as Harry Potter.

I don't think I'm ever going to have anything like Harry again. You just
get one like Harry.

I think she's been building since Goblet to kill off major
characters. Certainly she's pulled no punches so far as certain
characters have fallen in the war against Lord V. It's really pretty
heavy for kids stuff. I understand she's dropped hints about offing
Harry for a while now. I'd certainly understand if she did. You get
attached to the characters as a reader, as a writer I can only
imagine what a nightmare it would be to have someone else working
with your creations.
