[scifinoir2] MTV 'SNOOP' POOP

2006-08-08 Thread Said Kakese Dibinga
MTV 'SNOOP' POOP

By PHILIP RECCHIA and SUSANNAH CAHALAN

August 6, 2006 -- Media watchdogs are barking over an MTV cartoon that
portrays a Snoop Dogg-like character leading two women around on leashes -
before scooping up their poop.

The new MTV2 animated series Where My Dogs At? satirizes such Hollywood
stars as Michael Jackson, Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan.

But industry pros are incensed over the portrayal of women and blacks in
episode four.

The half-hour episode, Woofie Loves Snoop, debuted last month - and until
it was removed yesterday, the offending clip was just a click away on MTV.com.

Seinfeld's Jason Alexander voices Snoopathon Esquire III, who struts out of
his Caddy with Parkay and Marjorie, two bikini-clad black women wearing dog
collars and leashes.

The rap star orders one to hand me my latte as she squats on all fours and
scratches herself like a canine.

At the end of the scene, Snoop dons a plastic glove and picks up his enslaved
ladies' defecation.

This only serves to reinforce negative images of women, conveying to kids on
a Saturday afternoon that all women are bitches and hos, said Paul Porter,
founder of IndustryEars.com, a watchdog group.

In my 10 years of monitoring children's programming, I've never seen
anything this offensive.

R.E.A.C. Hip-Hop Coalition, a media-justice group, is calling for MTV to ax
the misogynistic episode.

MTV and Snoop did not return calls seeking comment. But in response to one
e-mail sent last week by a parent who holds a high-ranking position at a major
media company, MTV wrote:

The segment in question is in fact a parody of an appearance Snoop Dogg made
where he was accompanied by two women wearing neck collars and chains . . . The
goal was to take aim at that incident for its insensitivity and
outrageousness.

Re: [scifinoir2] The Biology of B-Movie Monsters

2006-08-08 Thread KeithBJohnson
This is great, funny stuff! I tend to veer into the can the scifi really
work? arena often too. Sometimes one can go to far, as sooner or later you
just have to give up and enjoy the ride. For example, I'm not sure that even
the article you referenced here mentions that the people in those shrinking
movies would keep their full body mass. Shrinking would only compress all the
molecules in the body, not disperse them. So if a 165-lb man shrinks to one
inch in height, his density is now what? Something like that of lead? Thus, I'd
assume one's invulnerabilty would increase with diminished size. Conversely,
would one be able to move at all. The article says the Shrinking Man's enhanced
metabolism would have him bouncing around, but I wonder if muscles that only
fractions of an inch long could move a body with the proportionate
weight/volume of a hunk of metal.Would his tendons and ligaments tear? Not to
mention, since he'd retain his full weight, he'd basically be breaking every
piece of furniture he jumped on. And how does one shrink down to
sub-microscopic size and breathe, seeing that the very air molecules are now
bigger than one's lungs? I love asking those goofy questions.

One reason I get a kick out of Marvel Comics is that they likewise try to
bring a serious scientific veneer to their heroes' and villains' powers. DC in
the main stays with the attitude that it's all fantasy and we should just go
along for the ride. For example, you really never see trully definitive guides
explaining much weight Superman can lift, or his upper limit of flying
velocity. No major treatises on how Manhunter can shape shift and the like.
But Marvel, with its Official Handbooks of the Marvel Universe, is so serious
about its stuff it's great. I'm currently reading the latest OHOTMU, and I love
reading stuff like Mr. Sinister possesses body-wide control of his molecules,
rendering him extremely durable, or The Microverse is entered by the process
of shrinking to the sub-molecular level, which generates particles faciliting a
transfer across the dimensional boundary, or Cyclops' optic beams are
concussive beams of force created by gravitons being forced into orbit around
photons. Cyclops' optic nerves access an as-yet unnamed dimension and shunt the
energy of that dimension through his eyes. And back to that shrinking
issue, Marvel addresses that density/weight problem by saying that people like
Hank Pym actually shunt most of their molecules to another dimension. Hence
their weight decreases proportionally to their size. Gotta love it!

Re: [scifinoir2] [Fwd: Dave Chappelle.... next great black leader???]

2006-08-08 Thread KeithBJohnson
I never really watched the show, but I can agree with you. A couple of skits I
saw weren't offensive in terms of racial(racist) content, but they were in bad
taste in terms of being crude. There was one, for example, where Chappelle
portrayed some kind of giant creature battling a volcano. Once he put out the
flame, he used the cone for personal gratification. The site of him gyrating on
a volcano was stupid, not funny, and veered into Wayans' kind of crude graphic
humour. It wasn't so much I found the skit offensive as unworthy of his
talents. It of course produced lots of easy guffaws from the audience, but it
didn't exactly tax his great ability. I think many of the better comedians who
come from a place of social consciousness struggle with that line. I know Pryor
did, in terms of using nigger for so many years.

More power to Chappelle for at least asking the questions. Would that we all
were so introspective in our daily lives...

-- Original message --
From: Martin Pratt [EMAIL PROTECTED]
That says something to me, about how deeply Chappelle must have been bound to
his art, for him to be able to slide that deep into his roles and take this
long to come to terms with the realization that he had blurred more than a few
lines.

COLUMNIST CINDY ADAMS EXPLAINS CHAPPELLE DRAMA: Writer says comic bolted
from Comedy Central series due to guilt.
(August 7, 2006)

*New York Post columnist Cindy Adams says that Dave Chappelle's sudden
exit from his Comedy Central series was rooted in guilt over the show's
provocative skits, some of which featured race-related material that he felt
may have stepped out of satire and into unintentional coonery.

George Richardson, a 70-year-old retiree that was New Jersey's only
black member of the state legislature when elected in 1961, tells Adams he
befriended Chappelle when the comic was attempting to steer the hip hop
community into a positive direction.

According to Richardson, Chappelle began moderating roundtable
discussions about the issue, and had even made plans to record a benefit
single with proceeds going toward disadvantaged youth. People like Kanye
West, Wyclef Jean, Doug E. Fresh, Erykah Badu, Russell Simmons, Diddy and
Mos Def had reportedly lent support to the ideas.

According to Adams, the comedian began to sense that some of his
Chappelle's Show skits were not in line with helping the black community.
Adams writes: His posse kept reinforcing how great he was, but one day he
noticed a white guy laughing at him. Not with him. At him. Chappelle
suddenly started saying things like, 'I have to find out am I dancing or
shuffling.'

On his very last TV show, he played blackface. With a red suit and
white lips, Richardson said to Adams. That's when it absolutely clicked in
what he was doing. That's when he realized he was 'shuffling.' That's when
he walked away from the show. That's when he split for Africa.

He almost had a breakdown. He felt he couldn't trust his lawyers,
agents, managers, producers, all the people who were loving what he was
doing. It dawned on him that, if they're telling me what I'm doing is great,
and I know what I'm doing is bad, then I can't trust anybody anymore.

He's running away. Sticking to his farm in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
Staying hidden from people. He's avoiding all those who were around him.
Nobody walks away from Comedy Central and $55 million. What this man did is
a profile in courage. He could become a truly great black leader.

The TV people are saying things like: 'We know he's got to get
himself together.' There's nothing wrong with Dave Chappelle. He is
together. That's the message we want to get to him. You are together. And we
love you. And support you. And God bless you. And we're here for you.

Excuse me while I whip this out.

Janet Jackson Poses Topless for Vibe
http://apnews1.iwon.com//article/20060807/D8JBPUN01.html?PG=homeSEC=news

Aug 7, 4:15 PM (ET)

NEW YORK (AP) - Janet Jackson has never been afraid to expose some skin. The
40-year-old singer, newly svelte after losing some 60 pounds, appears on the
cover of Vibe magazine wearing a skimpy bikini bottom and a necklace made of
large shells. Her right arm covers her breasts.

Will she ever stop posing for sexy photos? Of course. When I'm 80, she
tells Vibe. That's when I'll call it quits.

Two years ago, Justin Timberlake pulled off a part of Jackson's bustier,
briefly exposing one of her breasts, during the Super Bowl halftime show.

In an interview in the magazine's September issue, on newsstands Aug. 15,
Jackson says the incident - variously referred to as Nipplegate and the
bra-ha-ha - is history.

It's just over and done with. It's old. It's the past. It's history. I'm
onto something new. Everybody got their licks in - those who wanted to - and
it's done, she says.

Jackson credits her boyfriend, 33-year-old music producer Jermaine Dupri,
for giving her self-esteem a little boost.

I came to realize that younger men had less of a problem with who I am than
older men, she says. With the younger guys, there was less ego. Things
were less competitive. They weren't threatened by who made more and who made
less.

She says that with Dupri, she feels as if she's met her match.

When I look at Jermaine, I see myself, Jackson says. I feel as if I'm
looking in the mirror. The connection I feel with him I have never felt with
anybody else.

Her new album, 20 Y.O., is slated for release Sept. 26. Dupri produced a
few tracks, and longtime collaborators Jimmy Jam Harris and Terry Lewis
pitched in on the disc as well.

The pop star recently said she had packed on extra weight for a role in the
upcoming movie Tennessee, which she ultimately had to pass on because of
her new record.

When asked if she'd rather have a hit album or win an Oscar, she says: Win
an Oscar. It's just a passion. But can't I have both? Everybody in my family
says I'm spoiled anyway. I want both...

few tracks, and longtime collaborators Jimmy Jam Harris and Terry Lewis
pitched in on the disc as well.

So, someone's actually watching that crap.

Yes, it is offensive to me in the extreme, one of many reasons I avoid the
concept of hip and hop like the plague. But there is this thing in place called
the Bill of Rights (not for long, if the present administration has anything to
say about it), that guarantees morons like the creators of this show the right
to broadcast such to their hearts' (and wallets') content/content (former
meaning satisfaction, latter meaning amount contained). For all the good,
upstanding people who find this offensive, I can offer this one piece of
advice.

  MTV 'SNOOP' POOP

August 6, 2006 -- Media watchdogs are barking over an MTV cartoon that portrays
a Snoop Dogg-like character leading two women around on leashes - before
scooping up their poop.

The new MTV2 animated series Where My Dogs At? satirizes such Hollywood stars
as Michael Jackson, Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan.

But industry pros are incensed over the portrayal of women and blacks in
episode four.

The half-hour episode, Woofie Loves Snoop, debuted last month - and until it
was removed yesterday, the offending clip was just a click away on MTV.com.

This only serves to reinforce negative images of women, conveying to kids on a
Saturday afternoon that all women are bitches and hos, said Paul Porter,
founder of IndustryEars.com, a watchdog group.

In my 10 years of monitoring children's programming, I've never seen anything
this offensive.

R.E.A.C. Hip-Hop Coalition, a media-justice group, is calling for MTV to ax the
misogynistic episode.

With all due respect, an MTV show with Jason Alexander doing voices

It is pop. Disposable. Please don't put that on my culture. Charge

Re: [scifinoir2] [Fwd: Janet Jackson Poses Topless for Vibe]

2006-08-08 Thread KeithBJohnson
Yeah, lots of people--such as Tom Joyner--find it hard to believe she dropped
60 pounds *and* got that incredibly cut in such a short time. It's only been
maybe two months at most. Even if she did, it's not healthy at all. I know
that she's fallen out many times in the past due to exhaustion and poor eating
habits. And I know for a fact her workout regimes aren't the best. They're the
kind only someone with lots of money should attempt, as you need dedicated
nutritionists, cooks, personal trainers, hell--massage therapists! A whole team
of people to make sure you don't kill yourself. No matter what anyone says,
losing weight and getting fit is a slow process, and losing about 2.5 pounds a
week is a realistic and practical standard. Any more than that--which is the
Hollywood way--can be dangerous.

One of the things that bothers me in modern society is the obssession with
being too slim and impossiby fit. Now Jackson looks good--and thank God she has
a Black butt that won't go away!--but so many actresses and entertainers are
working themselves out to look like emaciated skeletons. I hate the message
that sends to young girls. Sometimes I feel as if I'm the only guy left who
still thinks the voluptuous look of the old days is the best: for non-Black
women, that'd be Rita Hayworth, Racquel Welch, Sophia Loren, Yvette Mimieux,
Yvonne Craig (Batgirl, Green Orion Slave Girl in Star Trek the OS). Nowadays
you can bet that when I think a white actress has a shape, someone will tell
her she's fat, and you'll come back later to see she's dropped twenty or so
pounds. A few like Scarlett Johannsen resist it, and I hear a backlash is
growing among some actresses, but the unrealistic expectations are crazy. In
the main I think Black people still have a healthier attitude. Seriously, I
think the natural butts and big legs many Blacks have help our women not go
too far down that skinny-as-a-board road, but I'm seeing more young Sisters buy
into the hype.

They say everything comes back in style in time. I just wonder when the days of
the voluptuous curvy woman will return to mass media?

NEW YORK (AP) - Janet Jackson has never been afraid to expose some
skin. The
40-year-old singer, newly svelte after losing some 60 pounds, appears
on the
cover of Vibe magazine wearing a skimpy bikini bottom and a necklace
made of
large shells. Her right arm covers her breasts.

Will she ever stop posing for sexy photos? Of course. When I'm 80, she
tells Vibe. That's when I'll call it quits.

Two years ago, Justin Timberlake pulled off a part of Jackson's bustier,
briefly exposing one of her breasts, during the Super Bowl halftime
show.

In an interview in the magazine's September issue, on newsstands Aug.
15,
Jackson says the incident - variously referred to as Nipplegate and
the
bra-ha-ha - is history.

It's just over and done with. It's old. It's the past. It's history.
I'm
onto something new. Everybody got their licks in - those who wanted
to - and
it's done, she says.

Jackson credits her boyfriend, 33-year-old music producer Jermaine
Dupri,
for giving her self-esteem a little boost.

I came to realize that younger men had less of a problem with who I
am than
older men, she says. With the younger guys, there was less ego. Things
were less competitive. They weren't threatened by who made more and
who made
less.

She says that with Dupri, she feels as if she's met her match.

When I look at Jermaine, I see myself, Jackson says. I feel as if I'm
looking in the mirror. The connection I feel with him I have never
felt with
anybody else.

Her new album, 20 Y.O., is slated for release Sept. 26. Dupri
produced a
few tracks, and longtime collaborators Jimmy Jam Harris and Terry
Lewis
pitched in on the disc as well.

The pop star recently said she had packed on extra weight for a role
in the
upcoming movie Tennessee, which she ultimately had to pass on
because of
her new record.

When asked if she'd rather have a hit album or win an Oscar, she
says: Win
an Oscar. It's just a passion. But can't I have both? Everybody in my
family
says I'm spoiled anyway. I want both...

Jackson was really big for a while, then had lost a lot of weight. Remember

her where she said she was embarrassed by her big butt and big legs. She went
on to say that she tried to hide her legs especially. I was sad to read that,
because she wasn't fat, was obviously in great shape as evidenced by her dance
moves. But there she was, the epitome of African beauty, ashamed of her legs
and butt. Later on she emerged with the first of the ultra-cut bodies that

I loved the video with Antonio sabato jr and dimson (The Black guy

and brought some weights. She was hot. Reading the text below saddens
me. God the Jacksons have some horrible self esteem. I might add I
thought she was adorable when she was big.

was looking good! She had the legs and hips lots of Brothers like. Right
after that I read an interview with her where she said she was embarrassed by
her big butt and big legs. She went on to say that she tried to hide her legs
especially. I was sad to read that, because she wasn't fat, was obviously in
great shape as evidenced by her dance moves. But there she was, the epitome
of African beauty, ashamed of her legs and butt. Later on she emerged with
the first of the ultra-cut bodies that she'd have over the years. Again, I
ain't hatin' on women who want to be fit, but it saddens me when so many
women try to get rid of their God-given blessings because society's tastes

It takes me out that they consider actresses like Monica Bertolucci
voluptuous. I think she is hot. The minute an actress puts on just

deal of it. Then I see movie boards talking about how great actresses
like Calista Flockheart of Ally Mc Beal look. I'm not a man, but it

It is almost like those that prefer these emaciated women to not really

Her new album, 20 Y.O., is

Fleeing the Scene
How Jamie Foxx forced the macho Mann to change the ending of Miami Vice.
By Kim Masters
Posted Thursday, July 13, 2006, at 5:12 PM ET

If it weren't for the talent of Michael Mann, a movie version of Miami Vice
would almost certainly be as awful as it sounds. And even with the talent of
Mann, Universal is fighting negative early buzz about the film. What's clear
is that the movie is dark, R-rated, and hardly a nostalgia-fest for fans of
the television show.

If Miami Vice doesn't work-artistically, at least-that would be a shame for
those who toiled to get it made. If there were an Academy Award for on-set
trauma, this movie could be a lock. Mann, a perfectionist, is known as one
of the most difficult directors in the business. And on this film, according
to a number of those who were present, he lived down to his reputation,
berating crew members (and even the talent) and creating a sense of chaos as
he went through his process. The movie wound up going over schedule and
dramatically over budget, with the final tally rumored to be more than $150
million. The studio says the number is actually $135 million.

Mann is gifted enough that actors entrust themselves to him. Clearly Jamie
Foxx did, returning to work with Mann after making Collateral and getting a
supporting-actor nomination out of it. But on Miami Vice things went so
wrong that Foxx ended up leaving in the middle of production, after a
shooting (and we don't mean the kind with a camera) took place during
filming in the Dominican Republic. Foxx refused to return for any more work
outside the United States, meaning that Mann had to rewrite the ending,
eliminating a version that was to have been shot in Paraguay.

The whole of making this movie was filled with adversity, Mann says. But
he adds that whatever the crew might have endured, it was all in the service
of making a great film. Sometimes folks are going to join this unit and
they may have a tough time, he says. Guess what? They're on the wrong
movie.

Sources on the set say things got off to a rough start with Foxx. For one
thing, after signing for the film, Foxx won the Oscar for his performance in
Ray. He was a bigger star than before, and according to members of the
production team, he showed up with an entourage and something of an
attitude. Foxx balked at flying commercial to Miami (Universal finally gave
him the jet). And there was an early problem because Foxx was getting paid
less than Farrell even though he was now an Academy Award winner. Foxx got a
big raise while Farrell took a bit of a cut.

Despite that and his hard-partying reputation, Farrell was very
well-behaved, according to crew members. Yes, Colin comes to play around,
but he always showed up on time and prepared, one says. Jamie is more of a
diva in the sense that he was afraid of boats, afraid of planes-there were a
lot of things where he was afraid for himself. Colin will do anything.

Mann is a macho guy, so perhaps it's not surprising that sparks flew between
him and the balky Foxx. Mann won't comment on the situation with Foxx other
than to talk about his admiration of the actor's talent. I'm not going to
dish dirt about Jamie, he says. He has a unique process of acting, and
most people don't understand it. He and I are real close. . That allows us
to disagree about stuff.

Certainly, clashing with Mann was not for Foxx alone. Michael dressed down
everybody and humiliated everybody, says a crew member. He's an
equal-opportunity guy.

Mann has his defenders. Maria Chavez, a location manager who's worked with
Mann all the way back to the days of the Miami Vice television show, says
her boss was very intense but not unfair. It's about stretching when you
work with him, she says. His expectations might be high because he's so
creative. It's just a standard he sets.

Crew members say the situation was complicated in part because Mann went
through dozens of script changes. It was being written essentially by
Michael on the fly, a crew member says. He changed his mind constantly
about locations (and, to the bitter end, was toying with multiple edits).
He was almost like a kid in a candy shop, this individual says. That kind
of indecision becomes a systemic thing. It's hard, at the last minute, to
make deals with vendors, rent a plane, to close down a freeway.

But Mann is unapologetic. You try to get the best out of a scene, he says.
You try to get the best experience for an audience. And you don't settle.
It's really tempting to settle. And it's really embarrassing to not settle.

Universal Chairman Marc Shmuger only assumed his job in time to work with
Mann on postproduction. But he says he's become an enthusiastic backer of
the director's methods. Rather than finding Mann indecisive, Shmuger says,
I actually marvel at his ability to keep all of his creative options open.
He's fearless. He is willing to try everything. That's a process that does
involve wear and tear on everybody.

Mann poured his

Monica Bellucci is easily and always on my list of the top ten best looking
actresses! Wow, wow, wow! Also, Selma Hayek and my girl Charisma Carpenter.
I think the problem is that so many people are programmed to see certain
assets as beautiful, which colors their overall view. No offense to any
white women on this list, but I've seen white guys just drool over bony,
pale blonde white women who aren't in the least attractive. I'm stunned
sometimes. I guess it cuts across all groups though, 'cause I've seen
Brothers even nowadays drool over light-skinned or half-Asian Sisters who
really aren't pretty. It's as if those traits override one's ability to look
objectively at things like facial features. I have my types I
like--voluptous--but I really do look overall at the face and stuff when i
deem someon attractive. For example, i'm not a big fan of really thin women,
but I think Charlize Theron is gorgeous, but that's because her face is
amazing.

It takes me out that they consider actresses like Monica Bertolucci
voluptuous. I think she is hot. The minute an actress puts on just
enough weight to still be just under average weight, they make a big
deal of it. Then I see movie boards talking about how great actresses
like Calista Flockheart of Ally Mc Beal look. I'm not a man, but it
seems to me that men should be lusting over Monica more than Calista.
It is almost like those that prefer these emaciated women to not really
be women, but to provide a legal be to be with someone who resembles
young teen.

Sometimes I feel as if I'm the only guy left who still thinks the
voluptuous look of the old days is the best: for non-Black women, that'd be
Rita Hayworth, Racquel Welch, Sophia Loren, Yvette Mimieux, Yvonne Craig
(Batgirl, Green Orion Slave Girl in Star Trek the OS). Nowadays you can bet
that when I think a white actress has a shape, someone will tell her she's
fat, and you'll come back later to see she's dropped twenty or so pounds. A
few like Scarlett Johannsen resist it, and I hear a backlash is growing
among some actresses, but the unrealistic expectations are crazy. In the
main I think Black people still have a healthier attitude. Seriou
 sly, I
think the natural butts and big legs many Blacks have help our women not
go too far down that skinny-as-a-board road, but I'm seeing more young
Sisters buy into the hype.

They say everything comes back in style in time. I just wonder when the
days of the voluptuous curvy woman will return to mass media?
