Never read Minority Report's source material. How did the ending stray
(though from what I know about the author, I'd guess it was pretty bleak in
the book). I see your point in some cases. "A.I." was damn near brilliant
until that god awful ending. And I loved "War of the Worlds" in so many
ways--the alien walkers were terrifying, emitting a sound almost as scary as
the Shadows on B5. But they ruined the movie for me by insisting on
including kids, which destroyed the whole thing.

Same thing with everything Spielberg touches post Close Encounters -- the
ending. Nothing is as bad an ending as "A.I.", to be sure, but Minority
Report could have stayed a little truer to the book for me.

*Could we send 'instant' messages across the cosmos? *
If we ever find
an intelligent civilisation elsewhere in the universe, communication
with it will likely be excruciatingly slow.

Suppose the alien planet was 100 light years away – practically in our
cosmic backyard. When you factor in the light travel time, one would
have to wait 200 years between each question and reply, making for very
slow conversation.

In science-fiction universes like /Star Trek/, on the other hand,
instant communication across the galaxy is no problem at all. To do
this, one would need the ability to send signals faster than the speed
of light, which apparently runs up against Einstein's cosmic speed
limit. Still, might there be a way to accomplish this in the real universe?

There just might be, according to a study
 to be published in
the journal Physical Review D. Shortcuts through extra dimensions are
the key, say Fabrice Petit of the
Belgian Ceramic Research Centre and Michael Sarrazin
 of the Facultés Universitaires
Notre-Dame de la Paix, both in Belgium.

Petit and Sarrazin describe a scenario inspired by string theory in
which what we think of as our universe is actually just one "sheet" in a
higher dimensional space-time. According to this picture, our universe
actually includes a second sheet that we do not normally notice because
we are confined to our own sheet.

Such "braneworld
"

scenarios
,

where "brane" is short for membrane, are receiving considerable
attention from theoretical physicists these days because of their
potential to explain puzzling aspects of particle physics and cosmology.

For example, gravitons, the theoretical particles that carry the
gravitational force, might be able to leak into the space between branes
– which could explain why gravity is so weak compared to other forces
like electromagnetism.

Petit and Sarrazin describe a less well-studied scenario where the two
branes are all there is. In this case, particles cannot exist between
the branes, but they can hop back and forth between the sheets through
the magic of quantum mechanics, which allows particles to disappear and
reappear in a new spot, "tunnelling" across normally insurmountable
barriers.

Under the right circumstances, a strong magnetic "vector potential
", which is
related to magnetic fields, can cause a particle to "oscillate" between
the two branes. If the other brane is warped in a certain way, distances
there may be shorter than in our own brane. This means if a fast-moving
particle were made to travel in the other brane for a while before
returning to ours, it could actually get to a distant part of our
universe much faster than a light signal confined to our brane.

Any particle that is a fermion – a class that includes particles like
electrons, protons, and neutrons, could take shortcuts this way. By
making electrons or other fermionic particles take shortcuts through the
other brane, it might be possible to communicate faster than light
speed, just like in /Star Trek/.

The effect is similar to how light travels at a different speed in water
compared to in a vacuum, says Daniel Chung
 of the University
of Wisconsin in Madison, US, who has explored similar scenarios. "With
that analogy, we are living inside water, but if the light can leave the
water and come back inside, it can in principle reach the destination
faster than if the light travelled just in water," he says.

Faster than light communication is already a very speculative
possibility. But while we're at it, is it possible that spaceships could
be made to travel faster than light this way?

It looks like this would be difficult, if not impossible. Petit and
Sarrazin don't rule it out, but in order for it to happen, the particles
in the object would have to be organised in way that would be hard to
achieve. In particular, the intrinsic "spin
" of each particle
would have to be aligned in the same direction. Scientists have been
able to achieve this on very small scales in the laboratory, but Petit
says he is not sure how this could be accomplished for large, complex
objects.

Previous work, like Chung's, has also considered the possibility of
shortcuts through extra dimensions (see At last, a way to t

Re: [scifinoir2] Re: New Highlander Movie Debuting on SciFi Channel This Saturday

2007-09-16 Thread Martin
The whole thing. I'm thinking, to my eternal chagrin, that the Source is
analogous to something used in a series of movies by a guy named Lucas. (No
vomiting smilies when you need them, dangit...)

The alignment thing? Probably just to swipe a few million for the FX budget.
Plot-wise, maybe to represent a singular cosmic event with grand ramifications.

I have no idea why it would call to Anna. If an ending had come about that
would've fulfilled the initial premise of the entire movie (made very early on,
while the Asian Immortal was breaking into the place at the movie's beginning),
that the uncovering of the Source would lead to a new renaissance on Earth,
with Anna's humanity as a catalyst for that change, then it would've made
sense. As they left it, it came out as just an excuse for Duncan to grant her
fond wish and knock her up (the reason they split, f memorry serves- she wanted
kids and was okay with his Immortality until she learned that making babies was
out for him).

Maybe, by his choosing not to kill, he gave the Source reason to believe that
mankind was deserving of hope?

Why kill Joe? Because they're evil bastiches over at Skiffy, that's why. (I did
tear up during his death scene, I admit. And I was hoping that he'd become
Immortal too.)

As for Anna dumping Mac just because he can't hav ekids? That's closer to real
life than you might believe. I can't have kids, and a woman dumped me for jsut
that reason (though she never admitted it).

But enough of beating a horse that was brought in dead. Let's butcher some
fresh meat. "Grizzly Rage" is p tonight. Will it be "bear"-ly watchable? Will
you grin and "bear" watching it?

Martin (*had* to end this meeting on a high note, apologies to Cloris Leachman)

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: did you watch the whole

it really doesn't matter):

 1) Exactly what *is* the Source and where was it? Was it accessed via a portal
to another dimension, or does it physically reside on Earth?
 2) What the hell did the Cosmos aligning have to do with it?
3 Why did the Source call to the human lady if the Guardian was meant to kill
all who approach it?
 4) Since McLeod refused to kill, what the hell did the Source do for him
besides allowing him to father children?
 5) Why the hell kill Joe Dawson?? At least Methos lived
 6) How shallow is that human lady, rejecting McLeod because he can't have
kids? So it's okay that'll he'll be young and vital when she's old and grey,
and that his life involves beheading people--but can't hang with a sterile

The "story": There's this incredibly ridiculous junk about the Source of all
Immortals being on Earth (or at least accessible from a physical point on
Earth). There's some stuff about another Grand Alignment with all the planets
in the Solar System pointing the way to the Source. or something. Honestly, I
can't remember the point. I think during certain times the Source can be
accessed physically, and the Grand Alignment points the way. I think. At any
rate, in the first five minutes, one of the Immortals says that the stars in
the entire *galaxy* are lining up along a line to Earth! Aside from the utter
impossibility of that--and the curious lack of news coverage--how the hell
would you know? It'd take like 30,000 years to reach us from the center of the
Milky Way, so that alignment would have *already* happened! But the scientific
screw up is least of the problems here. The plot makes no sense, McLeod
basically just drifts, brooding, through the film, with none of
 Adrian Paul'
s strengths in evidence. Methos--my favorite character after McLeod--is truer
to his amoral self, but he's not used all that much. There are caricatures in
the form of a younger acting Immortal and a religious fanatic priest Immortal,
but they're useless. And Amanda's missing. No Amanda?? I could have at least
used Elizabeth Gracen's lighthearted touch to lighten up this doleful stinker.

I can't go on! Just say it's stupid, illogical, depressing. All the Highlander
magic is gone, the ending is confusing. Something about Duncan being the "one",
but not the last Immortal, and having a baby! I can't figure out where they're
going with

Re: [scifinoir2] Re: New Highlander Movie Debuting on SciFi Channel This Satu...

2007-09-16 Thread KeithBJohnson
And remember, Tracey, I read this was the first of a *trilogy*! That might
explain the abrupt ending--it might, if the rest of the stuff didn't suck!

Martin may know more, but what I got was, the Source protects itself against
unworthy Immortals accessing it. Its power can give one super abilities, like
old Paleface's super speed and strength. When the Immortal who became the
Guardian touched the Source millennia ago, it made him into its slave
protector. The thing was, the Source tests those who try to use it. those not
worth, those who want to use it for personal gain, are punished. Because
Duncan refused to kill unnecessarily, the Source decided he was worthy of its
power. Now *what* powers he gained was unclear, outside of the ability to
conceive. i couldn't tell if he gained others.

Methos lived as far as we know. As they got closer to the Source, he realized
that Duncan was more worthy than he was to gain its power. So Methos led off a
gang of killers working for the Guardian, in order to let McLeod reach the
Source. We don't see if he lived or not, but my money (and hope) are on Methos
living.

What they didn't explain--or I missed--was how the Source was accessed, and
what purpose it had to give McLeod power. I *think* I heard something to the
effect that the Source creates a new race of beings when needed. I think it was
suggested it created the first batch of Immortals to serve some purpose, and
that the suggestion was that McLeod would father a new race of beings. I
*think*--maybe exhaustion, hunger, and boredom skewed my understanding.

Re: [scifinoir2] Re: New Highlander Movie Debuting on SciFi Channel This Saturday

2007-09-16 Thread KeithBJohnson
did you watch the whole thing? Please explain the plot to me if so. Some major
questions (Spoilers, but it really doesn't matter):

1) Exactly what *is* the Source and where was it? Was it accessed via a portal
to another dimension, or does it physically reside on Earth?
2) What the hell did the Cosmos aligning have to do with it?
3 Why did the Source call to the human lady if the Guardian was meant to kill
all who approach it?
4) Since McLeod refused to kill, what the hell did the Source do for him
besides allowing him to father children?
5) Why the hell kill Joe Dawson?? At least Methos lived
6) How shallow is that human lady, rejecting McLeod because he can't have kids?
So it's okay that'll he'll be young and vital when she's old and grey, and that
his life involves beheading people--but can't hang with a sterile man??

thanks to his connection to that Source. What that means is the fights
scenes--one of the best aspects of the series--look like crap! Literally looks

I can't figure out where they're
going with this; does accessing the Source always create a new race of
Immortals?

Whenever I hear that some of my favorite movies are going to have a
sequel on Scifi Channel's most dangerous night of television, I assume
that they will be unwatchable. I don't even bother any more. What is
disturbing is that these people are not even aspiring for
mediocrity-which would not impact their budget.-- in watch wouldn't
mediocrity ensure higher dvd sales and rentals?. Since they have been
doing it for so long, I can only assume the rating, sales and rental are
high, so why bother.

Re: [scifinoir2] Superman - Doomsday Animated Movie Coming Sept 18

2007-09-16 Thread KeithBJohnson
I'm looking forward to it, despite the changes. Good call on the lines on the
face. I hadn't thought about that, but you're right. Now I'm picturing a
superman comic with him standing, arm outstretched, a la the Surfer or Galactus.

From: Martin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Looks great, really. I'll be sure to check it out on PPV when it comes up.
Those lines on Supes' face look kinda Kirby-esque, a la New Gods.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This one caught me completely off guard. Bruce
Timm--the genius behind the Batman, Superman, and Justice League cartoons--has
done an animated movie based on the excellent "Death of Superman" comic series.
The movie's out on DVD and pay-per-view next Tuesday. The animation looks
slightly different from most of Timm's work (the lines on Supes' face are odd),
perhaps not quite as good, but still good. Voice cast is completely different.
Really jarring to hear James Marsters (Spike from "Buffy") as Lex Luthor,
instead of Clancy Brown. The plot differs from the comics in many ways, notably
the complete absence of the Justice League, the fact that John Kent appears to
be dead, and that Lois in the movie doesn't yet know that Clark is Superman.
But still it looks good, and with Timm behind it, ought to be exciting.
