Consumer Group Sniffs Congresswoman’s Open Wi-Fi

 We’re
not sure what’s more humorous: That California Rep. Jane Harman, the ranking
member of the House Intelligence Committee, maintains two unencrypted Wi-Fi
networks at her residence, or that a consumer group sniffed her unsecured
traffic in a bid to convince lawmakers to hold hearings about Google.

A representative for Consumer
Watchdog—
a group largely funded by legal fees, the Rose Foundation, Streisand
Foundation, Tides Foundation and others — parked outside Harman’s and other
lawmakers’ Washington-area residences to determine whether they had
unsecured Wi-Fi networks that might have been sniffed by Google as part of
the internet giant’s Street View and Google Maps program.

The group wants the House Energy and Commerce Committee, of which Harman is
also a member, to haul Google executives before it, so they can publicly
explain why, for three years, Google was downloading data packets from
unencrypted Wi-Fi networks in neighborhoods in dozens of countries. Google
has repeatedly said it didn’t realize it was storing snippets of payload
data on unsecured Wi-Fi networks, until German privacy authorities began
questioning what data Google was collecting.

[scifinoir2] James Mink Story

2010-07-12 Thread Kelwyn
This morning I saw this movie "Captive Heart: the James Mink Story" starring
Lou Gossett, Kate Nelligan, Michael Jai White and Ruby Dee. It is an amazing
mind screw about how twisted is slavery and its legacy.

An escaped slave, James Mink runs away to Canada where he becomes a wealthy and
influential man. He marries a white woman, has a bi-racial child and, because
he doesn't want to sully his daughter by having her marry a black man he offers
a huge dowry to any respectable white man who will marry her.

He finds one but the man turns out to be a vicious slave trader who gang rapes
his daughter before selling her into slavery back in the American south.

Posing as his wife's slave, Mink eventually rescues his daughter, several other
slaves and the black man, a slave, she has fallen in love with.

Mink's actions to save his daughter are bold and heroic but since was his
self-hate and knuckleheadism that led to his daughter's servitude in the first
place I am deeply conflicted about adding him to

[scifinoir2] Census discovers 157-year-old woman

Census discovers 157-year-old woman
 June 08, 2010 09:28:55 AM
Estimates of the size and composition of Indonesia's booming population may
remain just that despite an ongoing census, if the "discovery" of a
157-year-old woman is anything to go by.

Census officials have said they believe the woman's claims to have been born
in 1853, when Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata debuted in Venice, the Crimean
War erupted and San Francisco got its first street signs at intersections.

"There's no authentic data to prove her age but judging from her statements
and the age of her adopted daughter, who's now 108 years old, it's difficult
to doubt it," statistics bureau official Jhonny Sardjono said.

The only person verified to have lived past 120 years of age was Frenchwoman
Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 at the age of 122.

South Sumatran villager Turinah would be fully 25 years older than Calment
when she died, according to officials.

Even more incredible, she still works around the house and has smoked clove
cigarettes all her life, Mr Sardjono said.

"Despite her age she still has an incredible memory, clear sight and has no
hearing problems. She speaks Dutch quite fluently," he added. Indonesia was
a Dutch colony for hundreds of years until 1945.

He said Turinah burnt all her identification documents to avoid being linked
to an alleged communist coup in 1965.

Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country with a population of
about 240 million people.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has said the census results will be
important for future governance.

[scifinoir2] Where Are They Now - Project Greenlight Winners

2010-07-12 Thread Mr. Worf
Where Are They Now - Project Greenlight
Winners
Posted by Jellio
 2
Comments

I'm not sure what made me think of Project
Greenlight,
recently. Was it last week's opening of the Tribeca Film
Festivalthat made me think of
the HBO competition from a few years back? Or maybe it
was the sudden reemergence of Ben Affleck, in films like State of Play, and
Extract (which looks pretty
funny). Or maybe it was the Matt Damon
cameoduring Finding
Forrester (he does alot of those).

Oh well, whatever it was, now that I've got it in my head, I'll have to look
all over the Internet, or at least
Wikipedia,
to find out if the winners ever went on to bigger and better things.

*Season One - Stolen Summer*
[image: StolenSummerFinal.jpg]
*Description:* In its premiere season, Project Greenlight producers received
7,000 screenplays, with the top prize going to filmmaker *Pete Jones
*for Stolen
Summer , the story of a Catholic
boy who tries to convert his terminally ill Jewish friend (Wow...can you
believe it only made $134,000) The HBO behind-the-scenes series focused on
the day-to-day struggles of a director who was clearly over his head, and
the hilarious confrontations that followed.
*Cast:* Aidan Quinn, Bonnie Hunt, Kevin Pollak, Brian Dennehy
*Where Is He Now?* After Stolen Summer, Jones wrote, directed and starred in
Outing Riley , the story of a
regular Joe who comes out to his drinking buddies. The film was praised by
the Gay and Lesbian Alliance, but didn't get much traction beyond that. But
in 2005, Jones wrote Hall Pass , the
story of man whose wife gives him permission to sleep around (sounds
believable), and it was actually
purchasedby
the Farrelly Brothers. He also had a role in My
Big Fat Independent Movie , but
I'm sure he wants to forget that. He's probably hoping the Farrellys finally
decide to make Hall Pass their next Something About Mary.

*Season Two - The Battle of Shaker Heights*
[image: ShakerHeightsFinal.jpg]
*Description:* In season two, the competition was split into writing and
directing categories, presumably to foster some good fight scenes between
the directors, and writer whose work they were butchering. *Erica Beeney *won
the writing competition with The Battle of Shaker
Heights,
and *Kyle Rankin *and *Efram Potelle *were chosen to direct. As I think
back, the one thing I remember most about this season was continually
asking, "Shia who?" I don't say that anymore.
*Cast:* Shia LaBeouf, Amy Smart, Kathleen Quinlan, William Sadler
*Where Are They Now?* Kyle Rankin and Efram Potelle's production
company, Newborn
Pictures went on to produce classics like InSex
and a web series called HellHoles,
the story of a hapless drifter who buys a new home for a dollar, only to
discover he's purchased a portal to Hell (I don't know about you, but I
think I have to see this flick). And the only thing I can find on writer Erica
Beeneyis
that she worked on some television pilots, including Ice Road
Truckers.
(Please insert "long cold rode to stardom" joke here)

*Season Three - Feast*
[image: FeastFinal.jpg]
*Description:* HBO gives up on its baby, and Bravo picks up the third and
final season. To spice things up, they focused the competition on the horror
genre, and brought on Wes Craven to add some slasher cred. The selected
screenplay, Feast was written
by *Marcus Dunstan *and *Patrick Melton*, and the director was *John Gulager
*. If you don't remember John Gulager, he was this really soft-spoken dude,
who walked around like he was amazed that he actually won the thing. But as
it turned out, Feast was probably the most succesful of all three films.
*Cast:* Krista Allen, Balthazar Getty, Judah Friedlander, Clu Gulager
(winner's dad), Henry Rollins
*Where Are They Now?* Well it looks like Feast actually made some money,
because Live Planet made Feast Two: Sloppy
Seconds,
and Feast Three: Happy Finish. As for the winners, writers Marcus Dunstan
and Patrick Melton continued

SAN FRANCISCO | Mon Jul 12, 2010 4:01pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Consumer Reports said it cannot recommend Apple's
iPhone 4 to buyers after tests confirmed the device's well-publicized
reception glitches.

It added that that AT&T Inc, the exclusive mobile phone carrier for the
iPhone 4, was not necessarily the main culprit.

The influential nonprofit organization, which publishes guides on everything
from cars to TVs, said in a report released on Monday that it also tested
other phones -- including the iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre -- and found none had
the signal-loss problems of Apple's latest iPhone.

The report was the latest blow to the iPhone 4, which sold 1.7 million units
in its first three days on the market but has been plagued by complaints of
poor reception. Many of the complaints involve a wraparound antenna whose
signal strength is said to be affected if touched in a certain way.

Kaufman Bros analyst Shaw Wu said he was surprised by the stance that
Consumer Reports took on the new iPhone. Wu noted that the group's
recommendations are used as a guide by many consumers.

"Consumer reports is a respected publication. This could have an impact on
iPhone sales," Wu said.

Apple shares were down 1 percent at $257.06 on Monday afternoon on the
Nasdaq.

The company has been sued by iPhone customers in at least three complaints
related to antenna problems.

"When your finger or hand touches a spot on the phone's lower left side --
an easy thing, especially for lefties -- the signal can significantly
degrade enough to cause you to lose your connection altogether if you're in
an area with a weak signal," contributor Mike Gikas said in a report on the
Consumer Reports website.

"Our findings call into question the recent claim by Apple that the iPhone
4's signal-strength issues were largely an optical illusion caused by faulty
software that 'mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given
signal strength,'" Gikas said.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment.

Gikas recommended covering the gap in the wraparound antenna with duct tape
or some other non-conductive material.

Apple has said almost any cellphone will suffer a loss of signal if held in
certain ways. It said later it had discovered a software glitch that
overstates signal strength, though it did not directly address concerns
about the antenna with that admission.

On the flip side, Consumer Reports said the iPhone scored high on other
testing grounds such as battery life, sharp display and high-quality video
camera.

However, Gikas said the signal problem was the reason the iPhone 4 would not
be classified as a "recommended" device in its smartphone ratings.

"Apple needs to come out with a permanent -- and free -- fix to the antenna
problem before we can recommend the iPhone4," said Gikas in his blog post on
ConsumerReports.org.

Are there any dating methods such as the famous Carbon-14 dating that would
pinpoint age that's so relatively young? Typically archaelogists and scientists
are dating things that are hundreds, thousands, even millions of years old, so
an accuracy of a few decades isn't needed. I was wondering if something like
C-14 dating would work on her. Of course, they'd have to remove a bit of bone
and let it "die" to do that test, which ain't cool! Just wondered if there are
any other dating methods that could be done if a small amount of her body
tissue was removed and analyzed?

Census discovers 157-year-old woman

June 08, 2010 09:28:55 AM
Bookmark and
ShareEstimates of the size and composition of Indonesia's booming population
may remain just that despite an ongoing census, if the "discovery" of a
157-year-old woman is anything to go by.

Census officials have said they believe the woman's claims to have been born in
1853, when Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata debuted in Venice, the Crimean War
erupted and San Francisco got its first street signs at intersections.

"There's no authentic data to prove her age but judging from her statements and
the age of her adopted daughter, who's now 108 years old, it's difficult to
doubt it," statistics bureau official Jhonny Sardjono said.

The only person verified to have lived past 120 years of age was Frenchwoman
Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 at the age of 122.

South Sumatran villager Turinah would be fully 25 years older than Calment when
she died, according to officials.

Even more incredible, she still works around the house and has smoked clove
cigarettes all her life, Mr Sardjono said.

"Despite her age she still has an incredible memory, clear sight and has no
hearing problems. She speaks Dutch quite fluently," he added. Indonesia was a
Dutch colony for hundreds of years until 1945.

He said Turinah burnt all her identification documents to avoid being linked to
an alleged communist coup in 1965.

Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country with a population of
about 240 million people.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has said the census results will be
important for future governance.

[scifinoir2] Marvel Dumps Norton as Banner for "Avengers" Flick

2010-07-12 Thread Keith Johnson
They need to quit worrying about "name" actors and just get an actor who looks
and can play the part. Eric Bana was way too buff and handsome for Banner.
Norton was probably closer, but his almost Shakespearean intensity was a bit
too much for the skinny, unsure, milksop that is Bruce Banner. I think Phoenix
would come off too much like a crazed mad scientist than the "puny Banner" we
need. Cast the net far and wide to find the right man, and notoriety be hanged!
That's the damn problem with H'Wood all the time.

Someone who looks the part, for example, would be Jon Cryer, the whiny brother
on "Two and A Half Men". Not saying he *should* do it, but that's the *look*
you need for Banner-someone who looks soft and weak, as if he's never seen the
sun or the inside of a gym.

Marvel: Norton Won't Return As Hulk For 'Avengers'; Norton's Rep Responds

Edward Norton won't be reprising his role as the Incredible Hulk in 2012's "The
Avengers," a Marvel rep confirmed to Access Hollywood on Sunday.

Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige explained the decision in a
statement to HitFix .

VIEW THE PHOTOS: Edward Norton

"We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title
role of Bruce Banner in 'The Avengers,'" Feige told the site. "Our decision is
definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need
for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other
talented cast members. 'The Avengers' demands players who thrive working as
part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett,
and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who
fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the
coming weeks."

The actors referred to in the statement include current Marvel stars Robert
Downey Jr. (" Iron Man "), Chris Hemsworth ("Thor), Chris Evans ("Captain
America: The First Avenger"), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Scarlett Johansson
(" Iron Man 2's" Black Widow), who are expected to reprise their superhero
roles in team-up film "The Avengers."

A rep for Norton responded to the statement to Hitfix on Sunday, calling it
"purposefully misleading" and claiming that his client had been in discussions
to return to the role.

"This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully
misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light," the
rep told the site. "Here are the facts: two months ago, Kevin called me and
said he wanted Edward to reprise the role of Bruce Banner in 'The Avengers.' He
told me it would be his fantasy to bring Edward on stage with the rest of the
cast at [Comic-Con] and make it the event of the convention. When I said that
Edward was definitely open to this idea, Kevin was very excited and we agreed
that Edward should meet with [director] Joss Whedon to discuss the project.
Edward and Joss had a very good meeting (confirmed by Feige to me) at which
Edward said he was enthusiastic at the prospect of being a part of the ensemble
cast."

However, the rep further claimed, the talks fell apart last week.

"Marvel subsequently made him a financial offer to be in the film and both
sides started negotiating in good faith," he told Hitfix. "This past Wednesday,
after several weeks of civil, uncontentious discussions, but before we had come
to terms on a deal, a representative from Marvel called to say they had decided
to go in another direction with the part. This seemed to us to be a financial
decision but, whatever the case, it is completely their prerogative, and we
accepted their decision with no hard feelings... We know a lot of fans have
voiced their public disappointment with this result, but this is no excuse for
Feige's mean spirited, accusatory comments. Counter to what Kevin implies here,
Edward was looking forward to the opportunity to work with Joss and the other
actors in the Avengers cast, many of whom are personal friends of his. Feige's
statement is unprofessional, disingenuous and clearly defamatory. Mr. Norton
talent, tireless work ethic and professional integrity deserve more respect,
and so do Marvel's fans."

Norton played the role of Bruce Banner and his alter-ego, the Incredible Hulk ,

Re: [scifinoir2] Census discovers 157-year-old woman

2010-07-12 Thread Keith Johnson
Yeah, I'm not offhand aware of a method to determine the age of living tissue
like that, and certainly nothing that's so granular as to detect the really
short lifespan of a human being. It'd be hard, I imagine, for any test like
C-14 to tell if she was 100, 120, or 157. I wonder if there are any other
things that can be measured, such as some kind of buildup of chemicals in the
body. Maybe there's a hormone or compound in the local environment that's built
up in her body over the years, and they can estimate age by how much of that
substance is stored in her celss? Or is there some type of brain scan to chart
neurons or something (maybe we form more links in the neurons with age, and
they can estimate how long her brain's been active)? Unfortunately all the
dating methods I'm aware of work on dead things, only pinpoint age to within
decades or centuries, or require analyzing things like ice cores.

Any biologists/biochemists/doctors on the list?!

I've never seen Cryer do drama, just offered up his physical characteristics.
Then again, Bill Bixby was a handsome man who wasn't physically frail, but he
was an effective David Banner because of his acting ability. He wasn't the
weakling of Banner in the comics, but he was a very soft-spoken, gentle soul
who worked very well as Banner in the series.

"This past Wednesday,

to terms on a deal, a representative from Marvel called to say they had decided
to go in another direction with the part. This seemed to us to be a

Next year, those of you with a sport pilot license and $194,000 to burn

mere 1/3 of a mile runway, which Popular Science says means you could use

Nolan won't replace Ledger as Joker in 'Batman 3'

Batman is returning, but he won't have the Joker to contend with next time.

The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - Batman is returning, but he won't have the Joker to contend
with next time.

Director Christopher Nolan says he will not bring back the Joker, the
villain played so maniacally in "The Dark Knight" by the late Heath Ledger
that the role earned him an Academy Award a year after his death.

Nolan would not disclose what villain or villains might take on Batman in
the next film, due out July 20, 2012, the same weekend that brought the
record-breaking $158.4 million debut of "The Dark Knight" in 2008.

"For me, Heath was the definitive Joker," Nolan said in an interview to
promote "Inception," his sci-fi thriller opening Friday. "It wouldn't feel
appropriate to readdress that character."

Ledger died of an accidental prescription drug overdose in January 2008.
His death stoked fan interest in "The Dark Knight," which topped $1
billion at the box office worldwide.

With his supporting-actor win, Ledger became only the second performer
ever to earn an Oscar posthumously.

The next "Batman" film will be the third in the current Warner Bros.
incarnation of the franchise, which stars Christian Bale as the vigilante
superhero.

Tiny Satellites for Big Science

July 12, 2010

by Prachi Patel

The shrinking technology of cell phones, laptops and cameras are now
leading to palm-sized satellites. Easy to build and affordable, these
small satellites offer a new way to conduct astrobiology research. They
also could change the way we explore the universe.

When it comes to laptop computers and cell phones, bigger isn’t better.
The same logic applies to satellites: the bulkier the satellite, the more
time it takes to design and build, and the more expensive it is to put
into orbit.

Researchers are now taking advantage of the electronics technologies
that have made personal gizmos compact and affordable to make satellites
that weigh and cost a fraction of their predecessors. These pocket- and
backpack-sized satellites are changing the way astrobiology research is
done.

Conventional satellites used for communications, navigation or research
can be as large as a school bus and weigh between 100 and 500 kilograms.
Universities, companies and NASA are now building small satellites that
weigh less than one kilogram (picosatellites) or up to 10 kilograms
(nanosatellites).

These small satellites can be considered miniature versions of full-size
counterparts. They contain the same components - battery, orbital control
and positioning systems, radio communication systems, and analytical
instruments - except everything is smaller, less expensive and sometimes
less complicated.

“That’s the beauty of this technology,” says Orlando Santos, an
astrobiologist at NASA Ames Research Center. “We can make these things
small and still get meaningful science out of them.”

The Rise of the Cube

Two decades ago, Bob Twiggs and his students at Stanford University
developed the first picosatellite the size of a Klondike ice cream bar.
The Aerospace Corporation launched these picosatellites as part of a
mission to demonstrate the feasibility of building little satellites that
communicate with each other.

Twiggs then worked on CubeSat, a 10-centimeter cube. “I got a 4-inch
beanie baby box and tacked on some solar cells to see how many would fit
on the surface,” Twiggs says. “I had enough voltage for what I needed so I
decided that would be the size.”

Jordi Puig-Suari at California Polytechnic State University built a
deployment mechanism called the poly picosatellite orbital deployer, or
P-POD, that could pack up to three CubeSats. One of these is typically the
satellite bus, the brains of the satellite containing positioning and
radio equipment, while the other cubes carry the scientific experiments.
In 2004, the researchers sent the first three-cube nanosatellite into
orbit.

Six years later, CubeSats have become the world-wide standard for small
satellites. They are being used for everything from environmental sensing
and fundamental biology research to testing new space flight systems.

Over 60 universities and high schools are part of the CubeSat Project
based at Cal Poly. The National Science Foundation and the U.S. Air Force
have programs that funds CubeSats for atmospheric and space weather
research. Aerospace companies such as Lockheed Martin and Boeing have also
built and flown CubeSats.

Kentucky-based NanoRacks LLC provides a platform to take CubeSat
experiments as cargo aboard the Space Shuttles to the International Space
Station for periods of 30 or 60 days, after which they bring the cubes
back.

The goal of NASA’s new CubeSat Launch Initiative is to radically open up
the flight opportunities for nanosatellites. This Initiative should also
make it easier for universities to compete for launch access on NASA
launch vehicles.

There are probably between 35 and 40 small satellites orbiting the Earth
right now, of which about a quarter might still be working, says Twiggs,
now a professor at Morehead State University’s Space Science Center in
Kentucky.

Cutting Costs

The biggest advantage of nano- and pico-satellites is that they are a
bargain. Most of the cost saving comes at the launch stage. Unlike
conventional satellites, they don’t need a dedicated launch vehicle where
they are the primary payload. “They’re so small they can hitch a ride on
somebody else’s rocket,” Santos says. NASA’s nanosatellite missions cost
two million a piece as opposed to the tens of millions needed for a
conventional satellite.

Their affordability also comes from being built with off-the-shelf
electronic circuit chips such as microprocessors and radio frequency
transmitters and receivers. These are the same components that are inside
smart phones, hand-held Global Positioning System units, and digital
cameras.

In fact, the miniaturization of electronics has been the driving force
behind small satellite technology, making it affordable, says Twiggs.
“Electronics today are much more power-efficient than electronics of the
past; that helps us,” he says. “Ten or fifteen years ago we couldn’t have
found the components for the

Indie to develop tome with Gotham Group

By DAVE MCNARY

Harry Kloor's Jupiter 9 Prods. is developing a feature version of Robert
Heinlein's "Have Space Suit, Will Travel" with Gotham Group's Ellen
Goldsmith-Vein and Peter McHugh attached as producers.

Kloor, who founded Jupiter 9 to promote science literacy, obtained film
rights after presenting a finished script to the Heinlein estate.

"I was inspired to become a scientist and science fiction writer in part
by reading the works of grand master Robert Heinlein," Kloor said.

"Have Space Suit, Will Travel" was originally serialized in 1958 in
Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction and published later that year in
hardcover by Scribner's. Set in 2040, "Space Suit" tells the story of a
teenager who loses a contest for a free trip to the Moon, but wins a
broken-down space suit -- which contains properties that lead to
humanity's first contact with aliens.

Kloor's credits include writing for such TV series as "Star Trek:
Voyager," the animated series "Godzilla" and the syndie drama "Earth:
Final Conflict," and the upcoming animated feature "Quantum Quest: A
Cassini Space Odyssey," which will be released in large-format theaters in
the fall. "Quantum Quest" interweaves animated sequences rendered by
Digimax with space imagery captured from seven ongoing space missions.

Gotham Group was a producer on "The Spiderwick Chronicles" and is in
preproduction on "Abduction," starring Taylor Lautner and directed by John
Singleton.

Is 2010 New York City, America's "Summer of Ass"?

By Foster Kamer

Mon., Jul. 12 2010

The times, they change. The ebb and flow of the universe is simply
something to be gerneally understood as such, and nothing more. For every
action, there's an equal reaction. And for every physics law, there's a
metaphysical plane to apply it to that generally shows its face when you

In 2010, New York City, and the rest of America has the Summer of Ass.

Because 2009 was the Summer, when, like, every celebrity died! And that's
sad. So America must be rewarded with something. The revitalized
popularity emerging for big derrieres -- an easily-achievable physical
feat, one may argue -- is, of course, society's natural karmic award for
bearing the pain of all those dead celebrities last year.

The New York Daily News didn't note this in their piece of the Summer of
Ass -- which, by the way, Runnin' Scared Dot Com would like to officially
get behind (heh) in a big way (heh, that's another big ass joke, right
there) -- but after much looking, and looking, and looking, and talking to
impressively-assed celebrities like Kim Kardashian, they think they've

Of all of society's ills, will the large-ass trend work to heal any of

marginalized group that may -- nay, must -- see something good yielded by
all of this:

Lest you not understand what a "Booty Jam" is, all you need to know is: It

Seyfried to star in 'I'm.mortal'

New Regency sci-fi pic to be distributed by Fox

By PAMELA MCCLINTOCK

Amanda Seyfried is seeking immortality, starring in New Regency's sci-fi
action thriller, "I'm.mortal," from writer-director Andrew Niccol.
Twentieth Century Fox will distribute the film, which also has romance
elements.

"I'm.mortal" centers on a society in which aging stops at 25 -- meaning
that every role will be played by actors in their mid-20s.

New Regency picked up the high-priority project this spring. Niccol is
expected to begin lensing this year.

Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing via their Strike Entertainment.
Strike's Kristel Laiblin is exec producing.

Time is the currency in the world of "I'm.mortal," where citizens must buy
and bank time when their aging gene turns off at age 25. The rich can live
forever, but those who run out of time are engineered to die automatically.

When a rebel from the ghetto is falsely accused of murdering a wealthy man
for his time, he is forced to go on the run with a beautiful, rich hostage
(Seyfried).

Seyfried stars in Warner Bros.' upcoming "Red Riding Hood," from director
Catherine Hardwicke. She was last in theaters with "Letters to Juliet,"
"Dear John" and "Mamma Mia!"The male lead hasn't yet been cast.

"It's a strange casting process. Even for a small role like a priest or a
pawnbroker, where you would normally cast a 75-year-old character actor, I
have to find a 75-year-old character actor in a 25-year old body," Niccol
told Daily Variety.

Niccol's previous directing/writing credits include "Gattaca" and "Lord of
War." He also wrote "The Truman Show."

"I'm.mortal" isn't the only sci-fi film project broaching the subject of a
future where people don't age.

A remake of "Logan's Run" has been in the works for more than a decade at
Warner Bros., with Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman producing. That film
focuses on a man trying to escape a mandatory death sentence on his 30th
birthday.

Seyfried is repped by Innovative Artists.

Re: [scifinoir2] Upgraded to 21st Century TV and Now Wonder

2010-07-12 Thread Mr. Worf
Do you have the discovery channels? Viascum has been trimming back their
offerings as of late from what they offer to their competition.

[scifinoir2] ATT may also lose AMC

2010-07-12 Thread Mr. Worf
I just caught a commercial on AMC stating that ATT may lose AMC as well.
Looks like they are trying to pull all of the good channels from ATT.

Re: [scifinoir2] [Far, Far Away Off Topic] Is 2010 New York City, America's "Summer of Ass"?

2010-07-12 Thread Keith Johnson
Although this is kinda tongue-in-cheek, I find it interesting that the
"acceptance" of ample posteriors is still presented as rooted in non-Black
women: Kim Kardassian, Jennifer Lopez, Ice-T's wife???
It's always made me equal parts amused and frustrated that a feature that has
long been the norm of Black women only gained traction in this manner. When
Jennifer Lopez was being touted for her butt, it was as if they'd never been
seen before, yet just about every black woman I know has a more curvy one than
the average non-black woman. To me and other blacks, this was no big deal at
all. The one expert quoted mentions that Brazilian models' butts are helping
make it more acceptable, but I wonder how often those Brazilian ladies
acknowledge that those round behinds come from their African heritage? It
reminds me of how the term "A Bo Derek" came to represent corn rows, even
though they've been used by black women for untold centuries. My wife recalls
back in the day, wearing her hair in corn rows and some white girl saying, "Oh,
so you decided to get a 'Bo Derek' too?!" My wife quickly set her straight on
the history of that decidedly ancient hairstyle!

I guess it's a constant reminder of how the "Mainstream" can ignore what they
want, elevate what they want, and even make those who should be proud ashamed
of themselves. Serena Williams' statement that her slim sister Venus is built
like a "model" makes me wince, as, where I come from, Brothers would go for
Serena's body over Venus' any day of the week! Back in the day, a Sister built
like that was the envy of all the women and knew it!

And for every physics law, there's a
metaphysical plane to apply it to that generally shows its face when you
look at it from the right direction at a certain point. Like this one.
>From behind. In other words:

In 2009, New York City, and the rest of America had the Summer of Death.

The New York Daily News didn't note this in their piece of the Summer of
Ass -- which, by the way, Runnin' Scared Dot Com would like to officially
get behind (heh) in a big way (heh, that's another big ass joke, right
there) -- but after much looking, and looking, and looking, and talking to
impressively-assed celebrities like Kim Kardashian, they think they've
unlocked the secret of the reemergence of the ample back-asset

 ]:

'Gone are the days of being ashamed of a wider bottom, with America
becoming more diverse amid shifting standards, according to Stylesight
trend analyst Sharon Graubard. "I think it's about the diversity of our
population and more accepted beauty, and a wider range of accepted
beauty," Graubard explains.'

Realize what a win-win situation this is for everyone:

* The Big-Bottomed: Pleased.
* The "Ass Men": Pleased.
* The Workout Industry: Pleased.
* The Food Industry: Pleased.
* The Ass-Accentuating Denim Industry: Pleased.
* Pat Kiernan: Pleased

Of all of society's ills, will the large-ass trend work to heal any of
them? Only time will tell. In the mean time, there's certainly one
marginalized group that may -- nay, must -- see something good yielded by
all of this:

* The "Booty Jam" Nostalgists.
Lest you not understand what a "Booty Jam" is, all you need to know is: It
is a song created for hyper-utilization by those with, um, big asses. And
hopefully, these songs will come back, because they are amazing.
Certainly, you can have your Sir Mix-A-Lot, you may have your "Apple
Bottom Jeans" and your Nelly, but ah, you don't know anything about Luke,
69 Boyz, and 2 Live Crew's heyday, until you experience it. Like this.
