Keith, he has this track record of launching something that's spectacular
and soul-grabbing, that takes over your life entirely (Felicity, Alias
and Lost), and then walking away from it for the next shiny new project. I
think I posted something this morning, about some new genre shows coming
down the pike. One's called Undercovers, with Boris Kodjoe (breathe,
ladies!) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and any fans of Fringe here (which I now
reluctantly admit to being one of) will be heartbroken to know that JJ's
executive producer on it. And your utterly valid reasons for disliking his
work are strong factors in my book as well.

Justin, all the great talent in the world doesn't matter if the captain
walks away from the tiller. You mentioned the great talents A___s had on
Lost, and yet the show still got, if you'll pardon the unintentional pun,
lost.

On Sun, May 16, 2010 at 10:05 PM, Justin Mohareb justinmoha...@gmail.comwrote:

What's amusing is how narrow minded and disrespectful it is of the
people who work on the show. A tv show is a lot more of a team
effort than a film can be.

Hell, the massively talented writers room on Lost alone is great, much
less the great guidance given by Damon Lindelof (with the show since
the beginning) and Carlton Cuse (with it since season one).

But, you know, it's not surprising to hear that opinion.

Re: [scifinoir2] Fringe Is Becoming the Show Lost Wishes It Could be

2010-05-16 Thread Justin Mohareb
What's amusing is how narrow minded and disrespectful it is of the
people who work on the show. A tv show is a lot more of a team
effort than a film can be.

Hell, the massively talented writers room on Lost alone is great, much
less the great guidance given by Damon Lindelof (with the show since
the beginning) and Carlton Cuse (with it since season one).

But, you know, it's not surprising to hear that opinion.

Keith, he has this track record of launching something that's spectacular and
soul-grabbing, that takes over your life entirely (Felicity, Alias and
Lost), and then walking away from it for the next shiny new project. I
think I posted something this morning, about some new genre shows coming down
the pike. One's called Undercovers, with Boris Kodjoe (breathe, ladies!)
and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and any fans of Fringe here (which I now reluctantly
admit to being one of) will be heartbroken to know that JJ's executive
producer on it. And your utterly valid reasons for disliking his work are
strong factors in my book as well.

I found it thought provoking. I am wondering if there is ever going to be more
explanation of how this dude was still alive and, more importantly, YOUNG, all
these years later.  The only change I would have made to the episode was to
have Astrid do the takedown.

I have often wondered how Nazis explain superior minds of people of color,
though.  Not too much, though. I try not to take too much time understanding

covered a scientist that was a contemporary to Walter Bishop's father. His goal
was to release a genetically focused toxin that could kill anyone that it was
set to. That could be something broad as eye color or as focused as a
particular individual. There was something extra creepy about the episode that
I enjoyed. It would be a nice subplot if they had a new enemy on the show. What

Watching that episode prompted me to finally watch Inglorious Bastards last
night. Not the best movie. I think the biggest complaints I have heard about
the film was the pacing.

My biggest complaint was the incomplete storyline and that there wasn't much
historical facts to what happened. A nice revenge fantasy but that's about
it.

[scifinoir2] Fringe: It's Walter vs. William in the finale!

2010-01-27 Thread Tracey de Morsella
Fringe: It's Walter vs. William in the finale! -

http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2010/01/25/fringe-season-2-finale-spoilers/

It's the showdown we've been waiting for.

Fringe's second-season finale this spring will feature a long-awaited
confrontation between weird science partners-turned-frenemies William Bell
(Leonard Nimoy) and Walter Bishop (John Noble).

William and Walter will finally face off in the finale, confirms
consulting producer Akiva Goldsman, who is directing the two-part episode
(written by exec producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman). These [characters]
have so much that they're bringing to bear. And Leonard and John are two
fantastic actors.

The William/Walter reunion is just one of several mythology-related payoffs
Fringe has in store in this season's final episodes. We're going to be
looking very closely into Peter's [Joshua Jackson] identity, Walter's
choices in the past, and Walter's choices in the future, reveals Goldsman.
And by the end of the season, we're all going over to the other side.

We're trying to do the last two episodes as a singular event, a little bit
more movie-like, elaborates the acclaimed auteur, who won an Oscar for his
adaptation of A Beautiful Mind. It's really one big story. We're
approaching it like a mini-feature. It'll have a singular narrative drive.

But will it have any closure should, heaven forbid, the episode
http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2009/11/09/fringe-exclusive-j-j-abrams-on-ratin
gs-and-future/ turn out to be a series finale? Good stories typically
have sufficient closure, but also have the promise of continuing - even if
you're not watching them continue, he says. So, short of killing somebody
- which we're not doing - we're just treating it like the end of a movement,
not the end of a symphony.

Is Thursday a good fit for Fringe?

If the Season 2 premiere numbers are any indication, it might not be.

Fringe
earned a 4.7 rating/8 share, according to Fast National ratings from Nielsen
Media Research, clocking in its worst numbers ... ever.

In fact, the lowest Fringe ever reached in overnights was a
5.3/8 it achieved twice: Nov. 11 and Dec. 12. This premiere is 11 percent below
that low, and is 20 percent off its series premiere numbers. It's also more
than 25 percent off its average audience from last season.

It's tough to tell if Fringe can blame its lead-in on this one.
The season premiere of Bones with former Angel star
David Boreanaz earned a 6.1/10, according to Zap2it, 7 percent above the 5.7/10
the show earned in the half-season after moving to the Thursday slot.

However, in the past Fringe has enjoyed lead-ins of both
House and American Idol, by far Fox's top-rated shows.
Just House, for instance, averaged a 7.9/13 ahead of
Fringe, nearly 30 percent more than what Bones mustered
up in its season premiere.

Fringe also had a tough time keeping up with its competition. A
rerun of CSI got a good boost from its Survivor lead-in
to finish 800,000 viewers ahead of Fringe. However, the J.J. Abrams
show beat out Community on NBC although The Office
had 100,000 more viewers in the first half hour, according to Zap2it.

The new The CW show Vampire Diaries
took a bit of an expected tumble in its second week, earning a 2.5/4, losing 19
percent of its premiere audience but still remaining the network's top-rated
show. Supernatural,
however, remained stable for the most part, losing 9.5 percent of its premiere
audience with a 1.9/3.

Supernatural also closed the gap a bit between the two shows,
from a 47.6 percent difference in its first week to a 31.6 percent audience
difference
this past week.

Supernatural currently has a Stability Index Rating of 95.2,
initially ahead of last year's 86.2 rating, while Vampire Diaries
has quickly dropped to 90.3 because of its single-week fall. The Stability
Index Rating is a measurement developed and used by the BlipNetwork to try and
monitor how much of its original audience a television show is maintaining by
comparing its highest overnight rating with its average.

Fast Nationals usually provide a snapshot of what Americans are watching by
pulling numbers from the top urban markets that includes both live viewing and
same-day timeshifted viewing. A rating point generally represents more than 1.1
million households while the share indicates the percentage of televisions
turned on that was tuned to the specific program. These numbers typically shift
when final ratings are issued.

Heard any early buzz on this show, whose ninety-minute premier
is tonight (8 pm EST, Fox)? For the first time in years, I didn't get
the advanced TV Guide to the upcoming season, didn't even spend time on
the Web researching the upcoming series--not even the scifi ones. Guess
I can thank the Presidential race and the Olympics for that. In a way
that's cool, as I don't know what to expect from anything. I was
surprised to note in the trailers that John Noble (the Steward of Gondor
from LOTR) was one of the stores. Might be worth a look

http://www.fox. com/fringe/ info/
http://www.fox.com/fringe/info/

About the Show

From J.J. Abrams (Lost), Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the
team behind Star Trek, Mission: Impossible III and Alias, comes a
new series that will thrill, terrify and explore the blurring line
between the possible and the impossible.
When an international flight lands at Boston's Logan Airport
with no signs of life, FBI Special Agent OLIVIA DUNHAM (Anna Torv) is
called in to investigate as part of an inter-agency task force. After
her partner, Special Agent JOHN SCOTT (Mark Valley), is nearly killed
during the investigation, a desperate Olivia searches frantically for
someone to help, leading her to DR. WALTER BISHOP (John Noble), our
generation's Einstein. There's only one catch: he's been
institutionalized for the last 17 years, and the only way to question
him requires pulling his estranged son PETER (Joshua Jackson) in to
help.
When Olivia's investigation leads to multi-billion dollar
corporation Massive Dynamic and its manipulative corporate executive,
NINA SHARP (Blair Brown), our unlikely trio, along with Department of
Homeland Security Agent PHILLIP BROYLES (Lance Reddick) and FBI Agents
CHARLIE FRANCIS (Kirk Acevedo) and ASTRID FARNSWORTH (Jasika Nicole),
will discover that what happened on Flight 627 is only a small piece of
a larger, more shocking truth.
The FRINGE pilot is directed by Emmy Award-winning Alex Graves
(The West Wing), and the series is produced by Warner Bros. Television
and Bad Robot Productions. J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci,
Jeff Pinkner and Bryan Burk serve as executive producers.

Heard any early buzz on this show, whose ninety-minute premier is tonight (8 pm
EST, Fox)? For the first time in years, I didn't get the advanced TV Guide to
the upcoming season, didn't even spend time on the Web researching the upcoming
series--not even the scifi ones. Guess I can thank the Presidential race and
the Olympics for that. In a way that's cool, as I don't know what to expect
from anything. I was surprised to note in the trailers that John Noble (the
Steward of Gondor from LOTR) was one of the stores. Might be worth a look

About the Show

From J.J. Abrams (Lost), Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the team behind
Star Trek, Mission: Impossible III and Alias, comes a new series that
will thrill, terrify and explore the blurring line between the possible and
the impossible.
When an international flight lands at Boston's Logan Airport with no signs of
life, FBI Special Agent OLIVIA DUNHAM (Anna Torv) is called in to investigate
as part of an inter-agency task force. After her partner, Special Agent JOHN
SCOTT (Mark Valley), is nearly killed during the investigation, a desperate
Olivia searches frantically for someone to help, leading her to DR. WALTER
BISHOP (John Noble), our generation's Einstein. There's only one catch: he's
been institutionalized for the last 17 years, and the only way to question him
requires pulling his estranged son PETER (Joshua Jackson) in to help.
When Olivia's investigation leads to multi-billion dollar corporation Massive
Dynamic and its manipulative corporate executive, NINA SHARP (Blair Brown), our
unlikely trio, along with Department of Homeland Security Agent PHILLIP BROYLES
(Lance Reddick) and FBI Agents CHARLIE FRANCIS (Kirk Acevedo) and ASTRID
FARNSWORTH (Jasika Nicole), will discover that what happened on Flight 627 is
only a small piece of a larger, more shocking truth.
The FRINGE pilot is directed by Emmy Award-winning Alex Graves (The West
Wing), and the series is produced by Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot
Productions. J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner and Bryan
Burk serve as executive producers.

I'm not quite getting your meaning? You mean you think it was a good show, but
it won't find the audience it deserves?

I thought it was good; a little uneven, a few things from the fringe science
that jumped into more scifi (like being able to enter an unconscious man's mind
via LSD and computer networks) than current science. A couple of times I
couldn't tell if it was leaning more towards super science that's possible and
even in existence, or day after tomorrow scifi that's possible but several
year away. I'm not yet sure where they're going: an X-Files type show,
perhaps? But I enjoyed it enough to take the ride for the season. We certainly
could use some new scifi on television.

And John Noble was really good as the disturbed scientific genius, childlike in
his enthusiasm one moment, clueless in an innocent kind of way, disturbingly
willing to take risks at times, solicitious of people the next. he's the best
thing about the show.

[scifinoir2] Fringe Premieres Tonight on Fox

2008-09-09 Thread KeithBJohnson
Heard any early buzz on this show, whose ninety-minute premier is tonight (8 pm
EST, Fox)? For the first time in years, I didn't get the advanced TV Guide to
the upcoming season, didn't even spend time on the Web researching the upcoming
series--not even the scifi ones. Guess I can thank the Presidential race and
the Olympics for that. In a way that's cool, as I don't know what to expect
from anything. I was surprised to note in the trailers that John Noble (the
Steward of Gondor from LOTR) was one of the stores. Might be worth a look

I'll give it a stab but, even if it proves cosmically magnificent, it'll still
lose me at 9:00. Eureka, baby...
