That is very true. But what a sad demonstration of that newfound freedom we
have.

And for my last take, let me reiterate this wasn't about defending some
innocent *white* girl. I did see a kid (only 19) having fun, ruined by a fool.
Had this been Keke Palmer, I'd have been incensed. Had it been Mariah Carey,
I'd have been pissed. When he did it to the white guys a while back, i was
taken aback.

I see a lot of blacks got ticked at what they saw was people attacking the Big
Black Man for menacing their Pure White Virgin. And yeah, I know this is
America: I know there's some of that among some of the populace. It's just not
my motivation.

Like I said, to me, this is irritation at a Black man acting a fool, from a guy
raised in a time when we were raised to "act like you got some sense".

And by the way, when Jay Leno asked West what his mom would have thought about
his behaviour, he could only hang his head in shame and sadness. Brother isn't
bad, just needs to get some distance and focus on what he's trying to be.

My last take on the Kanye West mess: it wasn't too long ago
when a black man would be lynched for having the temerity to step wise to a
precious white flower of the Confederacy. That Mr. West can do so on national
television and live to tell about it is indisputable evidence of how far we
have come.

It would have still raised eyebrows, and it would have still drawn my
rancor--more of it, in fact. I'm not blind to the fact that this is still a
racist country, and I'm not one to jump on any type of figurative lynching of a
Brother. But I will call out idiocy like this when I see it, regardless of the
man's color. That there is an undeniable racial aspect to the whole affair
doesn't influence my opinion at all--and that's the best I can give in this
country.
That some whites are angered because of their skin color is their issue, and
where I feel they're going to far, I'll call 'em out. For my part--and for the
part of many blacks I know--this is simply about a black man acting like he's
got no sense.

Exactly! The same thing with missing kids. Every little white
kid that goes missing is plastered on your tv until you know their names. How
many black or hispanic kids can you name? They go missing too but you rarely
see or hear about them on tv.

Exactly! The same thing with missing kids. Every little white kid that goes
missing is plastered on your tv until you know their names. How many black
or hispanic kids can you name? They go missing too but you rarely see or
hear about them on tv.

You mean they *aren't* having a field day with it now?

Again, here, I fell you. Here in Atlanta, a young Black woman, 19 and a mother
of four who'd gotten herself together after years of drug and alcohol abuse,
never came home from her second job (where she was going to change clothes to
go to technical school).

That was 21 years ago. If you can name her, I'll mail you $20.

But let's not get it twisted. If it had been Keke Palmer
instead of Taylor Swift it would not have become a national cause celebre.
Beyonce's gracious ceding of the spotlight to Palmer would have been lauded,
everybody would have held hands and sung kumbaya and most of the ensuing
discussion would have been about the Madonna ("I, too, was a black child...")
and the moving Michael Jackson tribute.

There is an ongoing racial animus at work here and you may ignore it at your
own peril. I am currently struck by the murder of the young Asian woman at
Yale. Killed. Stuffed into a wall. Days before her wedding day. Can you
imagine the field day the press would be having with this story if the victim
had been white and blond.

2009-09-15 Thread Keith Johnson

My last take on the Kanye West mess: it wasn't too long ago when a black man
would be lynched for having the temerity to step wise to a precious white
flower of the Confederacy. That Mr. West can do so on national television and
live to tell about it is indisputable evidence of how far we have come.

As a character in my unpublished novel says, "What virtue is there in being
chaste when that is the only choice you have?"

Okay. I lied. THIS is my last take on the Kanye West mess:

Kanye West spoiling the "moment" for a white girl is more controversial than
Jack Black exhorting everyone in the audience to "hold hands and pray to
Satan." Only in America.

The Republicans are a minority party, yet they have won the
White house 20 out of the last 28 years. They have a credo: "Speak ill of no
Republican."

Imagine what black folks could do with a similar ("Speak ill of no negro" credo?

Cause, either you belong to the club. Or you don't.

Do you honestly believe most Republicans don't know Joe Wilson screwed up?
Yet, they not only continue to defend him; they embrace him. And, bankrupt as

Stick together like them, yes. Act like them at their worst, no.

Love that quote from Obama, by the way: "we are the ones we are waiting for".

I said much the same thing a few years ago to a guy who was upset because I
said Jesse Jackson wasn't the next MLK. He demanded to know who was our leader
if not Jesse, and I made a statement to the effect that we spend too much time
looking for the One to guide us, that we need to take charge and forge ahead
until the Universe creates/sends/reveals the next "leader".

That turned into a nasty argument, as if I'd personally insulted Jesse. Gave up
after that.
