Re: SD> New Shelby Dodge Registry

2005-05-23 Thread Barry Goodall
This whole topic came up last fall and there were many that suggested
SDAC either take over or play a major role in the running of the
registry. Bill and I had an email conversation and discussed the pros
& cons of the whole thing. Bill also posted to this list explaining
what the current status was and what was needed to get it going.

> If there's no connection, why do you support a guy that has
> run the list so poorly?

The main thing needed was money to hire professional programmers to
assess the data on hand and the best way to get it implemented. And
that was what he asked for then.So SDAC contributed towards the
cost of the contractural effort needed to get it going. In short, he
asked for help and we offered some (as did many other folks).

> Is it simply because he was running the list first?

This list has been an asset to the SD/TD community for many years, and
many may find fault with the way this list is run by Bill. But as I
have learned, you can't please everyone, and the critics will always
make you out as not even trying to. I admit I am not pleased with the
"progress" of the registry over the years, but rather than sitting
back and throwing stones and finding fault, we decided to try to help
him out. SDAC wanted to be part of the solution, not just another
critic pointing out a problem.

Being critical of someone else's efforts, whether deserved or not, is
the easiest job in the world, anyone can be critical and point out
faults. But being critical is NOT being an asset to the community.
Pitching in and trying to help, that is what makes a difference. We
put our money where our mouth is.

> Maybe you can explain the reasoning behind keeping Bill in charge of
> the almost defunct list. I'm all ears.

You make it sound like someone has the right to take his site away
from him. Well he owns that site and the reason he is in charge is
because he is the owner. Very simple concept, really.

What'd that previous post say, 4 years without his car being added to

While enthusiasm and active participation in projects to improve and
maintain the Shelby Dodge hobby is thing I have the utmost respect for, a
professional website to take care of these historical & documentation needs
was created back in 1995 via www.shelbyregistry.com . It would seem kind of
redundant to set up one more new website with so many of the same overall
ideas in mind.

There have been complaints over the years that the registry database has not
been updated enough but it would seem a wiser idea to me to work with our
already existing and well established resources to build and maintain an up
to date resource for everybody.

Bill Yohman who operates the site has built a very professional site but
doesn't always have enough time and resources to hand input a tremendous
amount of owner information into a easy to use database. If you have the
time, enthusiasm and skills to tackle this I would make an inquiry to him to
see how you could improve what we already have.

If there are too many choices of very similar historical services in this
hobby then each one of them will suffer because people will be confused and
won't end up finding the time to actively participate in them. Sometimes
re-inventing can be counterproductive.

Thanks for the plug. We have had some great donations recently and now that
I'm back in town, I'll be letting a contract to create a program to update
the Registry. I don't have a firm date yet but once the contract is let,
I'll keep everyone posted.

Cheers.

Jason (and others),
For the time being, I am supporting Bill in his efforts to get the
current site under control. Over the winter, SDAC contributed to both
this list and the ShelbyRegistry that Bill has. I've also assured
Bill that I would be willing to help in any way I can. He has a
massive amount of data that needs updating, what is currently on the
website is only the tip of the iceberg. So he not only needs to find
a way to easily keep the site up to date, he needs to find a way to
get the 1000's of updates he has on file, inputted to the site. Since
they are nearly all in an email format, many would probably be able to
be interpreted by software, but there are probably as many or more
that will need to be manually input, and then the entire thing error
checked before posting online. Do not underestimate the amount of
effort involved!

I too felt at one time that SDAC would be a "natural" organization to
maintain the data, and gave some thought to even starting a registry
of our own both for our member's cars and for the public's. But there
are drawbacks to either plan also, enough that I am very willing to
see what solution Bill can come up with. From my experience dealing
with the SD/TD crowd and keeping track of the few hundred members we
have, and how folks respond to info requests, I know firsthand some of
the complexities Bill faces in this challenge.

Just one example, a very minor one.Suppose someone has sent an
update and included the VIN but the car is missing the dash plaque and
the current owner is unsure of the plaque number so that wasn't
supplied in the update. So the current owner makes a mistake typing
the VIN and either it doesn't match the master VIN list or maybe the
error has 2 digits in the last 6 transposed and it still matches the
master VIN list, but the whole record has a feel that something is
wrong with it. What is done with that record? If it is handled by
software, and the VIN doesn't match, then the record is flagged for
later attention. If the VIN matches the list as being valid for that
year/model, then the record gets posted, but it is wrong and an error
is now propagated to the site. What has been gained by that? Having
the wrong info is just as bad as not having the info there at all.

It is only by human intervention and thought given that the error
presents itself. Then that record must be placed aside for later
follow up and investigation. Folks may argue that "Well it is the
owner's fault for getting it wrong" but that is not the point. The
point is, if there is to be a site that is a true registry for these
cars, it means nothing if the data on the site isn't accurate (just
like all the complaints are about now). So having a registry sounds
simple enough, but having a registry that has data integrity is very
difficult indeed. There were roughly 8500 numbered Shelby cars
produced at Whittier, nobody knows how many have survived, and nobody
knows how many are in the hands of enthusiasts (who would be the only
ones likely to send an update). And I am not anxious to take such a
project on.

I agree that you get no response.I tried for about 2 years to register my

SD> New Shelby Dodge Registry

2005-05-23 Thread veriloquent
I can't wait for a working and accurate website.
I don't care who does it either.

It is refreshing to think that someone is finally going to try to accomplish
it, and if it is at the expense of another website that has been languishing
for years, thats ok too.

I see value in this new website. Please make it happen. I've been trying to
register my shelby for YEARS now.

Re: SD> New Shelby Dodge Registry

2005-05-23 Thread Jason
While I agree that reinventing is sometimes counterproductive, I've
emailed Bill at least 3 times offering my assistance in designing a
PHP/MySQL interface that would allow easier maintenance and more accurate
reporting. I still have yet to hear back from him concerning it. I
certainly recognize the time it takes to maintain something of this
magnitude, but at the same time, if Bill's not interested in getting
help, it's hard to feel any loyalty in my book.

Barry, is this something that SDAC proper could think about taking under
it's umbrella, if Bill were to allow it? It seems like something that
fall directly in line with the mission of SDAC. If so, I'll be more than
willing to volunteer coding time and effort to build an appropriate
registry database (I'm a systems developer by trade).

selling them here. Also people parting them out. I am very gung ho on keeping
it up to date. I love Dodge Shelby's. They are so awesome.
