Re: CS>low cost silver ceramic purifiers
Reid, This may not be helpful, but Rio Grande Jewelry supply sells a product they call "precious metal clay" which is fine silver particles in a clay matrix. It can be molded like clay. Upon firing at 1600 degrees the matrix is burned off leaving silver only. Perhaps an investigation of their suspension mix might help, altho in your case you need the clay to form the filter. CS>Novel bacteria not harmed by silver
Bacteria with a silver lining Silver is normally toxic to bacteria A strain of bacteria that can manufacture tiny crystals of silver has been reported by Swedish scientists. This skill may eventually prove useful to engineers who want to fabricate extremely small optical and electronic devices. Pseudomonas stutzeri were originally found growing on rocks recovered from silver mines. The metal is usually highly toxic to microbes and silver compounds make effective bactericides. But P. stutzeri can survive such silver-rich environments because they gather all the metal in their systems into small granules which they store at the edge of their cells. The silver-containing particles are deposited at the edge of cells "It's a very clever trick," said Dr Tanja Klaus, from the Department of Materials Science at Uppsala University. Her team cultured the bacteria in the laboratory and got them to synthesise single, silver-based crystals with well-defined shapes, including equilateral triangles and hexagons. Most of the crystals were made from almost pure silver. They reached up to 200 nanometres (billionths of a metre) in size. However, the Swedish team also found a second group containing silver sulphide, and a third variety whose composition is unknown but which possibly contained hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen in addition to silver. The way these silver crystals are made, their small size and composite nature, will be of great interest to scientists working in the field of nanotechnology. Novel properties Materials fabricated on the nano scale have novel properties not displayed in normal, large-scale crystalline solids or glasses of the same chemical composition. Nanophase materials, as they are often called, have unusual electrical and optical properties because of the very precise way in which their atoms are arranged. By carefully controlling particle sizes, it is possible, for example, to make "superplastic" ceramics that stretch like chewing gum and liquids that are magnetic. The crystals take up well-defined shapes But fabrication of any material with dimensions on the nanometre scale tends to be costly and inefficient, which means that bacteria that can grow such particles could prove very useful indeed. The Uppsala team suggest it may be possible to produce new types of metal films and coatings that have their properties "tuned" according to the way the bacteria are cultured. "We are hoping that we will be able to control the size and morphology of the crystals," said Dr Klaus. "The films we are working on are wavelength sensitive. You can collect light or energy coming from the Sun in a specific range and avoid that energy being emitted or lost. "In this way, you can make solar collectors and use them for water heating, for example." But much more needs to be known about the mechanism the microbes use to precipitate the crystals before any large-scale applications can even be considered, Dr Klaus said. Details of the Uppsala research are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA.
CS>Silver abx socks! (my brother could use these)
Slivers of silver solve the problem of smelly socks By Roger Highfield, Science Editor (Filed: 25/06/2003) Smelly socks could one day be just a nasty memory thanks to nanotechnology. Scientists in South Korea have discovered a method of impregnating silver particles into the polypropylene widely used in textiles, which give it "excellent" antibacterial properties. Silver has been shown to kill more than 650 disease-causing organisms and is also a safe antibacterial agent, enabling the "nanocomposite" fibres to be used as a weapon against malodorous feet. Prof Sung Jeong and Sang Yeo, his graduate student at Hanyang University, Seoul, report in the journal Polymer International how the new fibres maximise the surface area of the silver to provide an optimum antibacterial effect. The particles are around 30 nanometres across - a nanometre is a billionth of a metre - and Prof Jeong said: "Even though they only contain a small amount of silver our new fibres have excellent antibacterial properties and the physical properties are not affected. "So, if we could control bacteria, we don't have to worry about the bad smell from socks and underwear." The pair have managed to make safe anti-microbial fibres with a range of applications, including socks, carpets, napkins and surgical masks. Amore Pacific, a Korean cosmetics company, is already using nano silver particles in its under-arm deodorants. The Prince of Wales recently prompted the Government to launch an independent investigation into the benefits and risks of nanotechnology after he http://www.dailytelegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml;$sessionid$BIZIEK0VUNGVHQFIQMFCFF4AVCBQYIV0?xml=/news/2003/06/05/nano05.xml";>voiced fears that tiny robots could one day reduce the planet to a "grey goo". Prey, a novel by Michael Crichton, envisaged a world where people are taken over by predatory nanoscale robots. However, Lord Sainsbury, the science minister, has dismissed the Prince's concerns as mere "science fiction".

CS>CEOs head for the border
Enjoy! Jules REMAINING U.S. CEOs MAKE A BREAK FOR IT -- Band of Roving Chief Executives Spotted Miles from Mexican Border San Antonio, Texas (Rooters) -- Unwilling to wait for their eventual indictments, the 10,000 remaining CEOs of public U.S. companies made a break for it yesterday, heading for the Mexican border, plundering towns and villages along the way, and writing the entire rampage off as a marketing expense. "They came into my home, made me pay for my own TV, then double-booked the revenues," said Rachel Sanchez of Las Cruces, just north of El Paso. "Right in front of my daughters." Calling themselves the CEOnistas, the chief executives were first spotted last night along the Rio Grande River near Quemado, where they bought each of the town's 320 residents by borrowing against pension fund gains. By late this morning, the CEOnistas had arbitrarily inflated Quemado's population to 960, and declared a 200 percent profit for the fiscal second quarter. This morning, the outlaws bought the city of Waco, transferred its underperforming areas to a private partnership, and sent a bill to California for $4.5 billion. Law enforcement officials and disgruntled shareholders riding posse were noticeably frustrated. "First of all, they're very hard to find because they always stand behind their numbers, and the numbers keep shifting," said posse spokesman Dean Levitt. "And every time we yell 'Stop in the name of the shareholders!', they refer us to investor relations. I've been on the phone all damn morning." "YOU'LL NEVER AUDIT ME ALIVE!" The pursuers said they have had some success, however, by preying on a common executive weakness. "Last night we caught about 24 of them by disguising one of our female officers as a CNBC anchor," said U.S. Border Patrol spokesperson Janet Lewis. "It was like moths to a flame." Also, teams of agents have been using high-powered listening devices to scan the plains for telltale sounds of the CEOnistas. "Most of the time we just hear leaves rustling or cattle flicking their tails," said Lewis, "but occasionally we'll pick up someone saying, 'I was totally out of the loop on that.'" Among former and current CEOs apprehended with this method were Computer Associates' Sanjay Kumar, Adelphia's John Rigas, Enron's Ken Lay, Joseph Nacchio of Qwest, Joseph Berardino of Arthur Andersen, and every Global Crossing CEO since 1997. ImClone Systems' Sam Waksal and Dennis Kozlowski of Tyco were not allowed to join the CEOnistas as they have already been indicted. So far, about 50 chief executives have been captured, including Martha Stewart, who was detained south of El Paso where she had cut through a barbed-wire fence at the Zaragosa border crossing off Highway 375."She would have gotten away, but she was stopping motorists to ask for marzipan and food coloring so she could make edible snowman place settings, using the cut pieces of wire for the arms," said Border Patrol officer Jennette Cushing. "We put her in cell No. 7, because the morning sun really adds texture to the stucco walls." While some stragglers are believed to have successfully crossed into Mexico, Cushing said the bulk of the CEOnistas have holed themselves up at the Alamo. "No, not the fort, the car rental place at the airport," she said. "They're rotating all the tires on the minivans and accounting for each change as a sales event."

Re: CS>CS: Cautionary Note/liver cysts
Lynda, Simple and congenital hepatic cysts are asymptomatic in most people, and don't cause problems unless they enlarge. Some arise from developmental defects in the formation of the bile ducts. Polycystic liver disease (multiple cysts) usually also presents with cysts in the kidneys, but doesn't cause problems unless the cysts enlarge in the porta hepatis, causing biliary obstruction. Splenic cysts are either parasitic (echinococcus) or nonparasitic in origin. Non- are usually traumatic in origin, or congenital. From what I understand, CS would help with those of parasitic origin. If they are nonparasitic and don't cause you pain, you probably have few reasons to worry about the incidental finding. CS>Borna virus may be linked to CFS
Borna Disease Virus Linked to Psychiatric Disorders -- -- LONDON (Reuters Health) Jan 09 - Controversial evidence presented at a microbiology meeting here on Wednesday could, if confirmed, trigger another revolution in our understanding of mental illness. Prof. Norbert Nowotny, from the University of Veterinary Sciences, Vienna, told researchers that Borna disease virus might be linked to schizophrenia, depression and chronic fatigue syndrome in humans. In horses and sheep, the neurotropic virus triggers a severe meningoencephalitis. The animals stop eating, become depressed and in almost all cases progress to paralysis and death within 3 weeks. There is no effective treatment. No such severe reactions are thought to occur in humans, Dr. Nowotny said at the meeting hosted by the European Societies of Clinical and Veterinary Virology and the Society for General Microbiology at the Royal College of Physicians in London. "In humans, only subtle changes are suspected, which may interfere with neurotransmitter activities leading to psychiatric disorders," he said. A variety of evidence from several research groups supports the theory. For example, antibodies to the virus have been found with higher frequency in the blood of people with diseases such as panic disorder than in controls. Dr. Nowotny's own lab has isolated the virus' genetic material from a man with chronic fatigue syndrome. One lab in Japan has also reported finding higher incidence of antibody to the virus in people who work with horses. But other researchers have questioned the validity of some results, suggesting samples may have been contaminated with virus from animals, leaving the scientific community split over whether the association is real. Other unanswered questions include the epidemiology of the disease. Scientists only suspect that the virus is transmitted through the nasal passage, and it is not clear whether the virus passes from animals to humans or if there is a specific human strain. Also, the disease occurs only sporadically in a small endemic region in central Europe, which suggests there is an animal reservoir, such as a rodent, but so far none has been identified. "Currently, there are many open questions," Dr. Nowotny acknowledged in an interview with Reuters Health. "If it is true, then it would be the first time that there is a virus involved in human psychological disease." "If it is true that there is a human form of Borna disease, then I would expect that it would be a human virus transmitted from human to human," he suggested. "By learning more about how the virus is transmitted we can take actions to prevent it from causing disease in humans and animals." The next step in clarifying the issue is to conduct multi-centre trials that could rule out questionable results achieved in single labs, he said. Such trials are currently underway and publications should follow shortly. -- -- -- The silver-list is a moderated forum for discussion of colloidal silver. CS>More on the anthrax antibiotic issue
Check out the full article: http://www.chestjournal.org/cgi/content/full/116/5/1369#T3 Diagnosis and Treatment Diagnosis of inhalational anthrax during the first stage is difficult. The symptoms and signs of disease are similar to the common cold or a viral infection and are often mistaken for the latter diagnoses. Advanced disease may be recognizable by virtue of the shock-like symptoms and characteristic chest radiograph abnormality, but by then, the disease progression is rapid and treatment is ineffectual. Gram’s stains and cultures should be obtained on blood samples of patients in whom anthrax is suspected. Sputum from patients seldom yields positive smears or cultures. Serologic diagnosis of anthrax can be made by means of a microhemagglutination test specific for the PA component of the toxin. These tests are available through state health department laboratories. Suspicious Gram’s stains should be reported to the CDC for further evaluation.14 15 Antibiotics and supportive care in an intensive care setting are the mainstay of therapy. Antitoxin used in the Sverdlovsk epidemic is no longer available for human use. The anthrax bacillus is highly susceptible to penicillin, amoxicillin, chloramphenicol, doxycycline, erythromycin, streptomycin, and ciprofloxacin, but resistant to third-generation cephalosporins (Table 3 ).28 Table 3. However, it is possible to manufacture resistant strains, which is a matter of great concern in the event of biological warfare. Penicillin G, 4 million units every 4 h; ciprofloxacin, 400 mg every 12 h; or doxycycline, 100 mg every 12 h, are dosages often used in the treatment of inhalational anthrax.12 ICUs are especially useful in the hemodynamic monitoring of patients and management of septic and hemorrhagic shock, the final common pathway linking all these patients. CS>Anthrax resistance gene identified in mice-FYI
Anthrax Resistance Gene Identified in Mice -- -- WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) Oct 02 - Researchers have identified a gene in mice that mediates macrophage resistance to anthrax lethal toxin (LeTx), according to a report published in the October 2nd issue of Current Biology. If demonstrated in human cells, this finding could have important implications in the event of an attack with a biological agent. While the locus responsible for anthrax toxin resistance had been mapped to chromosome 11, the exact gene responsible for resistance had never been identified, the authors state. In the current study, Dr. William F. Dietrich, from Harvard Medical School in Boston, and colleagues evaluated the susceptibility of various murine macrophage strains to LeTx. Within the previously identified locus, the researchers found only one gene that differed between susceptible and resistant strains. The gene identified encoded a kinesin-like protein, known as Kif1C. Treatment with a chemical that alters the cellular localization of Kif1C induced LeTx susceptibility in formerly resistant strains. In contrast, ectopic expression of a resistance allele of Kif1C promoted survival in susceptible strains. "We don't know yet whether human macrophages vary in their susceptibility to the toxin," Dr. Dietrich told Reuters Health. "However, we can isolate and test human macrophages, so this is clearly an answerable question," he said. "If they do vary in their susceptibility, it will be interesting to see if this can be accounted for by differences in the human homologue of Kif1C gene," he added. "If the human macrophage research pans out it might lead to some sort of diagnostic test," Dr. Dietrich noted. "But then the question becomes 'what do we do with such a test?' " he said. "Determining a patient's susceptibility might facilitate triage and help guide clinical decision making." Dr. Dietrich also pointed out that "anthrax involves a couple different processes. There's the bacterial infection component which...can be controlled, and then there's the toxin aspect which is difficult to control," he said. "So if a patient is "resistant to the toxin, treatment could focus on the bacterial infection aspect." "I don't view the Kif1C protein as being a drug target itself," Dr. Dietrich emphasized. However, further research into the pathways involved may reveal molecules that could be pharmacologic targets, he added. Re: CS>Mechanism of Herpes Infection/RAS pathways
Here you go, James (Human Anatomy and Physiology, Marieb, 1998): The reticular formation extends through the central core of the medulla oblongata, pons, and midbrain. It is an intricate system composed of loosely clustered neurons in what is otherwise white matter. The outstanding feature of the reticular neurons is their far-flung axonal connections. Individual reticular neurons project to the hypothalamus, thalamus, cerebellum and spinal cord. Such widespread connections make reticular neurons ideal for governing the arousal of the brain as a whole. For example, certain reticular neurons, unless inhibited by other brain areas, send a continuous stream of impulses (via thalamic relays) to the cerebral cortex, which maintains the cortex in an alert, conscious state and enhances its excitability. This particular arm of the reticular formation is know as the reticular activating system (RAS). Impulses from all the great ascending sensory tracts synapse with RAS neurons, keeping them active and enhancing their arousing effect on the cerebrum. Repetitive, familiar, or weak signals are damped (filtered out), but unusual, significant, or strong impulses do reach our consciousness. For example, you are probably unaware of the slipping of your watch on your wrist, but if the clasp broke, it would immediately gain your attention. Between them, the RAS and the cerebral cortex disregard perhaps 99% of all sensory stimuli as unimportant. If this did not occur, the sensory overload would drive us crazy. The drug LSD removes these sensory dampers, promoting a similar type of sensory overload. The activity of the RAS is inhibited by sleep centers located in the hypothalamus and other neural regions, and is depressed by alcohol, sleep-inducing drugs, and tranquilizers. Severe injury to this system, as might follow a knockout punch that twists the brain stem, results in permanent unconsciousness (irreversible coma). -- The silver-list is a moderated forum for discussion of colloidal silver. CS>Mechanism of Herpes Infection
Lists, Thought ya'll might find this interesting. Enjoy! Salud, Jules Mechanism of Herpes Infection Revealed, With Implications for Cancer Treatment -- -- WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) Jul 18 - Herpes simplex virus 1 targets cells with an activated Ras signaling pathway, investigators in Canada report. Not only does this finding have ramifications for strategies to prevent HSV infections, it also suggests possibilities for using HSV to treat cancer. Dr. Patrick W. K. Lee and colleagues, of the University of Calgary Health Sciences Center, used for their experiments normal NIH-3T3 fibroblasts and fibroblasts transformed with oncogenes that activate the Ras signaling pathway. As reported in Nature Cell Biology for August, less than 5% of normal cells, when incubated with HSV-1, became infected. The transformed cell lines exhibited pronounced viral protein synthesis and virus output. Inhibitors of the Ras signaling pathway suppressed HSV-1 infection of ras-transformed cells. Further experiments demonstrated higher levels of phosphorylation of RNA-activated protein kinase in HSV-infected normal cells than in infected transformed cells. Phosphorylation was not detectable in cells not exposed to HSV-1, suggesting that this reaction is triggered by the virus. One implication, Dr. Lee told Reuters Health, is that "drugs that can downregulate the Ras pathway could conceivably be used to control virus infection." A second possibility, he said, is that "cancer-killing viruses" can be genetically engineered to target cancer cells with the most activated Ras pathway. "Normal cells need the Ras pathway to grow, but the Ras pathway is not active at all times," Dr. Lee said. "But in over 80% of cancers, this pathway is 'turned on' all the time." Dr. Lee noted that reovirus also uses the Ras signaling pathway. "So you can see a common theme emerging," he said. "We're looking at a major concept, possibly a universal concept." He and his colleagues are now evaluating other viruses to see if they also use the Ras pathway and can be used to target cancer cells. CS>Recent vitamin C research -FYI only!
Vitamin C Capable of Damaging DNA -- -- WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) Jun 14 - While vitamin C is a known dietary antioxidant, it can actually induce the decomposition of lipid hydroperoxides to DNA-mutating compounds known as genotoxins, according to a report published in the June 15th issue of Science. Dr. Ian A. Blair and colleagues, from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, performed several laboratory assays to determine the role of vitamin C in lipid hydroperoxide decomposition. Typically, certain metal ions are needed to catalyze lipid hydroperoxide decomposition into genotoxins, the authors state. However, when vitamin C is present, the reaction proceeds in the absence of the metal ions. "The antioxidant effect of vitamin C is against hydrogen peroxide," Dr. Blair told Reuters Health. "In fact, almost all vitamins that have been tested for antioxidant effects have been tested against hydrogen peroxide," he said. "No one has really considered what would happen when tested against a lipid peroxide." "Vitamin C will stop the first step in lipid peroxide formation, but if the lipid peroxide can be formed by an alternative mechanism, then vitamin C isn't going to work," Dr. Blair pointed out. The cyclooxygenase and lipooxygenase pathways are two alternative ways of generating lipid hydroperoxides, he said. "Interestingly, cyclooxygenase-2 is upregulated in colon cancer." "This may be the first truly convincing evidence that vitamin C has two effects, one of them good and one of them bad," Dr. Blair stated. "This may be why it has never shown any efficacy" as a cancer chemoprevention agent, he added. "The bad effects may be cancelling out the good effects." CS>More from the always controversial Dr Jon
Give it a read, kids.then fire away! "RESEARCH IN GUADALAJARA I spent three days with Dr. Diaz. While he has not perfected his method of actually making colloidal silver within the body, his results are very promising. He uses two catheters in major arteries. A fine silver wire is inserted directly into the blood stream. He applies 5 volts DC for 3-4 hours, three times/week. I reviewed the records of six leukemia patients. All should have been dead in January. Four are still alive. Two have no evidence of cancer. Interestingly, only the two deceased patients had all the conventional treatment, which severely debilitates the entire body. All were at Stage 5, with a life expectancy of less than six months, when they came to Dr. Diaz last July. Thus far, his research has been solely with leukemia patients." From: tr...@plix.com (Tracy) Reply-to: mr_tracys_cor...@egroups.com To: mr_tracys_cor...@egroups.com Ain't no doctor but if it were me, I sure in hell wouldn't be eating anything. I would be drinking a gallon of Willard Water a day and taking a good colon cleanse along with a few coffee enemas to eliminate what's in me. At least this shouldn't hurt any and I would also lay off the pills, they just masking the problem whatever it is. If you want a quickie, try my colon cleanse. Sounds like maybe an ulcer that is being irritated. If you experience any blood in your stools, get to the hospital and let them check it out for sure. Last time I had these symptoms, they had to fill me back up with all the blood I lost down the toilet bowl. Liver and Colon Cleanse Ingredients needed: Epsom Salts - 3-4 tablespoons Distilled Water - at least 90 ounces 100% Pure Juice (20 tablespoons) or 20 fresh lemons Cold Pressed Virgin Olive Oil - at least 1 pint Maintain an empty stomach six to eight hours before proceeding with the cleanse. You may drink water. [After your noon meal, for example, fast until 6-8 p.m., then begin the cleanse] HOWEVER, One hour before beginning the cleanse, place 3-4 tablespoons of Epsom salts in a 10 oz. glass of distilled water - drink ALL In an 8 oz. glass put 3 tablespoons of the olive oil. Then add the juice of two lemons (or 2 tablespoons of 100% pure lemon juice) and fill glass with distilled water. You will need 10 glasses of this mixture. According to what is most convenient to you, you may prepare 10 glasses of the mixture in the beginning or re-mix each glass of water, oil and lemon juice every 15 minutes. Drink one glass of the mixture every 15 minutes until you have drunk 10 glasses of mixture. To offset the taste, place a small amount of pure maple syrup on the tip of your tongue when drinking mixture. Also it helps to drink through a straw. .Some people experience an upset stomach but this will soon pass. .By the following morning, if you have not eliminated, it helps to eat 1 or 2 Fuji apples. .When you have eliminated, pay particular attention to what you see in the toilet bowl before you flush. You will probably notice small gray-looking chunks along with other items of interest. Check for parasite infested mucous which may be dislodged from the lining of the intestinal tract. This is very important, as you will want to pass all of this loose mucous as soon as possible. You will know you have some remaining mucous in your intestinal tract if you experience cramping. To expel any additional mucous you will need to take a mild solution* of cleanse the same day. After the cleanse regimen, as a sleep aid, you may take one or two cups of grapefruit juice before retiring. Have a nice cleanse. . .! _ *A mild cleanse solution is two tablespoons of castor oil or mineral oil followed by a cup of Senna tea before retiring. From: t...@mindspring.com (Brian McInturff) To: wwen...@aol.com >Didn't see anything on your regimens page for possible gallstones. Any >suggestions? Thanks In the Cleansing section, liver, is a regimen. Best treatment I have found, if it is not desired to do a liver flush, is using the following: Plenty of water throughout the day. Planetary Formula's Stone Free as directed up to double directed. Take only two tablets at a time, but use them more often if desired to hasten progress. Magnesium Citrate, 500-1000mg at night. Larger amounts are laxative. Can use the cheapest form of magnesium, magnesium oxide, and drink the juice of one lemon each night instead of using magnesium citrate. Vitamin B6, 250mg at night for one month maximum. Take silymarin if desired. This only helps a bit with stones directly, but cleans solvent out of the liver better if they are a problem. turf -- The silver-list is a moderated forum for discussion of colloidal silver. Re: CS>Dowsing????
Nicole, In the energy work called Reiki we use a sort of "long-distance" technique which can have surprising results. This is the most non-invasive, non-malevolent therapy.I'd be more afraid to be under a surgeon's knife! Recent experiments in quantum mechanics have shown that our ideas of separateness may have to be drastically revised. Photons and other particles can communicate at faster than the speed of light (technically not supposed to be possible). One theory is that they (and thus we - if you want to take that micro to macrocosm leap) are connected in some strange way we don't understand yet. I think at the chi or qi level we are all connected and therefore the accessibility of information is not surprising. Be careful, but don't close yourself off completely.
