[SLUG] FOR SALE: CTTE Positions!

2005-03-07 Thread Chris Deigan
SLUG'ers,

We're holding a huge sale on SLUG committee positions!

All positions must go, so we're holding a massive sale on them. Because
of the huge popularity on these however, we've had to raffle them off
using a nomination system.

So, get in the game today to win yourself a special seat on the SLUG
CTTE. Perks include monthly meetings in exotic locations, exclusive
mailing lists to share with other prize-winners as well as your chance
to win profits made from the selling of mailing list member's addresses
and our monthly royal aid in the transferring of money from nigeria.

Can't make it on the CTTE? Then nominate a friend, or that special
someone. CTTE membership makes the perfect gift and can be ordered with
a membership card written in the exclusive handwriting of noneother than
current SLUG committee members, in the colour of your choice*.

ENTERING: You can enter to win this competition of a lifetime by sending
your nomination to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

* Choice includes what pen we can find.
^ Nominating, seconding, and winning attracts a fee of $25 p/ person
or $15 for students and unemployed persons with proof on-hand.

Thanks for all the responses. I've used knoppix, and rebuilt according
to the remastering howto after adjusting boot scripts. Also removed
unwanted packages (dont need OOo on a server :) to shrink the iso.

Now to test when I can find someone around..

[SLUG] Help with qmail configuration

2005-03-07 Thread dmgray0325
Hi,

Is there someone who can help me with a qmail configuration on a RH 9
system? I would rather deal on the phone or in person so would like
someone who has the time. I would even accept a commercial arrangement
as time is short. I must have this done by 31 March and I am totally
lost at the moment.

I can be reached on (02) 6258 7917 or (0418) 646267 to discuss.

Everyone's opinion is correct. I don't agree with the above sentiment:

Get Fedora Core, or SuSE.
Install a lightweight window manager like icewm.
The system will work just fine (with 32M).

I don't want my system compromised by a few $$ ram. Thank hevens the
developers share that sentiment. So you who want to play with 32M ram
can and are free to do so. The rest of us can spend 1 hours work to buy
oodles of ram, and not spend many hours of lost productivity waiting for
slow computers.

Do not try to run kde or gnome with 32M, you will wait for ever!
Don't wast your time playing with old distros. That is a very
unproductive avenue, and serves your club not-at-all.

[SLUG] Kernel Panic - help pls

2005-03-07 Thread Bill
I've just had a mobo fail, so I swapped my HD to my 2nd PC which has the
same model mobo. Swapped over vid card. Attached hd as hda ( same as
before). I'm running SimplyMepis 2004.6 updated to DEbian.

On booting I get Grub, and boot kernel 2.6.10, then everything starts to
load until I get the following:-

VFS: Cannot open root device "hda1" or unknown-block (0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option.
Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block
(0,0).

If I boot from an earlier kernel I get a Splash Screen for SimplyMepis and
" ide: late registration of driver"

What do I need to do to fix this please?

Hi Bill,
Boot from your install CD as 'linux rescue'.
Once boot is completed, mount /dev/hda1 on '/mnt'.
Change directory to '/mnt/boot/grub'.
Edit 'grub.conf' by changing the line that says,
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10- ro root=LABEL=/
to
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10- ro root=03:01=/
This is assuming that your boot device is : /dev/hda1.
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10- ro root=03:01=/
If it is /dev/hda2, then it should be:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10- ro root=03:02=/
If it is /dev/hdb1, then it should be:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10- ro root=03:65=/
If it is /dev/hdb2, then it should be:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10- ro root=03:66=/
You may check what is your boot device by running:
fdisk /dev/hda or fdisk /dev/hdb, etc.
Reboot and check.

I'd imagine that there isn't much specific literature because just about
everything isn't SuSE specific -- there isn't much in SuSE that isn't also
in most other Linux distributions. The best place to look for SuSE specific
stuff is probably going to be Novell, since it's their baby. I wouldn't be
surprised if they're charging that, though.

Debian has harden-doc package. Much of that in there is applicable to

Also search for "harden doc" in google as there are similar docs for

[SLUG] Editing a windows registry file through Linux

2005-03-07 Thread amos
Hello,

Someone I know moved his dual-boot system to a new disk
and now has problems logging in to the Windows partition.

Setup:

1. Fedora Croe 3
2. Windows 2000 (Server?) on an NTFS partition

Both on the same disk. Another disk is used for data.

The windows partition was copied by creating a partition with at least
the same amount of sectors on the new disk then dd'ing the partition.
We also made sure that the partition number is the same as on the
old disk.

Windows boot fine, but after a user name and password are entered
it just pops back into login screen.

Microsoft's site explains exactly how to fix this, except that they
assume access from a windows machine (e.g. over the net).
Apparently it's something to do with hash strings of the drive
identification inside the registry.

We found a tool to edit the registry file on NTFS from Linux but it
seems to be geared only towards reseting passwords, not about
updating strings in the registry in general.

Does anyone know of a way to edit the Windows registry from Linux?

(I'd supply the links we found but don't have them handy right now).

Thanks,

I've not used them, but it claims to be an almost fully functional

I've been keeping an eye out for similar utility. samba has one listed
but it is not finished/done yet.

A possibility is to replace the login window with a command shell. I've
done this before. I can't remember the specifics of it, but basically
you can replace the login window binary (lsass, lra or lga or some such
thing) with a copy of the cmd.exe file (obviously making backups). Boot
the system and instead of the login window you get a "command prompt"
console. From here you should be able to run regedit and do whatever is
necessary. Could be wrong, but may be worth a try. I think notepad.exe
can be used also (instead of cmd.exe) and use the File, OPen to run
things (eg Notepad, File, Open, C:\windows\system32\regedit.exe will
actually execute regedit instead of opening it - or that's the rumour I
read somewhere).
