[SLUG] Line Filter more ...

2006-04-02 Thread Rajnish

All,

Thanks a lot to all for their input in assisting me in finding a linux
friendly ISP. I have selected internode. Amongst other things they have
various distros

mirrorred and download of these is not metered.

My present issue is with Line Filter -- i know its purpose. I just don't
know

what lines they should go in.

I have 2 sockets (outlets) on the wall (one physical line from the road
is split into 2

somewhere beneath the house). On socket_1, i've plugged in my adsl modem.
And on socket_2 my everyday Telstra touch phone.

Now where should I place the Line filter ?
a) between socket_1 and adsl modem, or
b) between socket_2 and touchphone or
c) all of the above,
d) none of the above.

Your suggestions/recommendation, as always, will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

[SLUG] ADSL Query

2006-02-23 Thread Rajnish

All,

Finally, I am jumping onto the broad-band-wagon. I am currently with TPG
dialup

and am generally satisfied with their service quality.

After looking at the broadbandchoice website for some weeks now, I've
figured

that I'd ask the sluggers. What are your suggestions for a modest $50/month
commitment, minimum 512Kbps plan from an ISP that does not shy away from
Linux (slackware, fedora) ?

My typical useage will be: remote desktop to work
(will use windoze for this), general webbrowsing (news, wikipedia, cricket).
I also intend to download linux distros (for experimentation - in the
early days at least),
some internet radio etc etc ... with bandwidth to burn ... who know what
more I
might end up doing. (Any ISP that mirrors the distros and don't count
them in

ones download limits ?)

And one other question: to avoid having long wires running across the
length of the

house (phone's in one corner, my computer's in another), I was considering a
wireless router (?). What are the draw backs of this ? And also is it
likely to

interfere with a baby monitor ?

As always, any suggestions/recommendation/thoughts will be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

[SLUG] Network Attached Storage (NAS)

2005-08-04 Thread Rajnish

All,

I would like to get your esteemed opinion on a number of queries
concerning NAS. But first a background - our LAN accomodates a number

of diff OSes, including Solaris, Linux, Win2K and WinXP.

We would like to attach NAS device(s) on the LAN, and be able to access
storage space from all the above OSes. In particular, it is important
that NAS devices support NFS - to enable Un*x boxes to mount the space.

The space is to be used both as permanent storage as well as overflow
workspaces for our developers.

Questions:
1) Is NAS a suitable solution for such an environment ? If a case is to
be made for/against it, what are the ups and downs ?

2) More importantly, what are your experiences with dealing with these
devices ? Do they support NFS ?

3) Your experiences with speed and reliability ? We have particularly
large files (200MB-2GB) to deal with and compiles includes a large

number of files.

Any tips, suggestions, references will be appreciated.

Thanking you all in anticipation. Please reply to NG for future
reference.

That worked !! I've got the SRM console prompt .

I did notice something peculiar (there always is, isn't it) -- the
jumber (J6) was wired for HALT- but pressing the reset button caused
the system to reboot - everytime. So I jumpered it to RESET to get it to
halt (had to push reset many times).(Initially, I thought I was

reading the diagram/jumpers wrongly - but I am pretty certain now I was
reading/jumpering it correctly).

For the record, Control-C doesn't get the SRM console prompt - but this
could be because I am connected via the serial port and
win95:terminal.exe swallows it.

Thanks all so far. I am sure I'll have more questions when I get to

[SLUG] Alpha SRM Question

2005-08-02 Thread Rajnish

All,

I've come in possession of an Alphastation 500/400 which has
OpenVMS. I would like to install Debian on it
however after hours of googling, I've discovered that I need to
know much more about this beast (read: *fun*) than I know about my
AMD-PC.

So this beast (out of respect, I won't call it a 'box') doesn't
have a monitor nor a graphic card. Thus, I use the serial port hooked
to an old hp-laptop.

I can see the bootup process starting, followed immediatly by
OpenVMS and then the login: prompt. No telltale sign of an
SRM console ().

My question(s) are:
how to I get to the SRM console ? Is there a special key I have to
press ? (I am connected via serial port using Terminal.exe on win95!!)

If I am to disable OpenVMS to automagically bootup, I've learnt
that I have to disable some env 'auto_action' ? Can this be done
without SRM ?

I haven't tried it - but is the beast capable of booting off a
CDROM without instructing it via SRM ? (If yes, then I'll just wack
in a bootable debian install cd, right ?)

Please reply to the NG. Thanking you all in anticipation.

All,
I've been playing with Fedora Core 3 and ubuntu - all on separate
partitions on /dev/hdb while win2k sits on /dev/hda. Grub is installed

Interestingly, while both Ubuntu and fedora had no difficulty
finding windows - fedora did not find ubuntu (and ubuntu did
not find rh8 (which preceded fedora)). It could be something to
do with /boot (/dev/hda1) getting formatted on install. :-)
I have a few questions on Ubuntu and fedora - I want to change
to a less memory intensive window manager. I've heard of a few ..
but how do I swap to them ?
Secondly, the startup of both Ubuntu and Fedora take considerable
time - I mean minutes. On a standalone system, used for dialup

[SLUG] Mouse, Grub and Slackware

2004-11-15 Thread Rajnish
All,
After using RH for just over a year, I am heading back to
my pref distro - slackware v10. From the moment the computer
booted off the install cd, it was familiar territory and
I was in control. (Prior to RH, I was on slack 7)
Getting to the point: after a 1st go successful install, I fired up
X using 'startx'. It came up nicely - including the mouse pointer.
Upon moving the mouse, the pointer took a rapid exit (to
top right of screen) ... never to be seen again !!! I am not
too worried about it right now - but any suggestions will
be welcome ?? (It is a 2 button el-cheapo mouse connecting to
first serial port (com1 in dos terminology)).
The PC has win2K and RH8. Boots into grub from where I select
which one of these to use. (There is separate /boot partition
from which RH8 boots from).
For the fear of trashing the system, I didn't install lilo
therefore slack boots from floppy.
Can I use grub to boot into slackware ? If so, how to do that ?

[SLUG] Pleasant looking font

2004-04-07 Thread Rajnish Tiwari
Hi All,

On my favourite editor, NEdit, I have my font set to 'courier'.
(Aside: I use vi/vim too - often for quickly editing small files)

As I look at the editor everyday, I wonder if there is a more
'pleasant' looking fixed width font on both linux solaris ?
(I aim to keep my NEdit preferences similar).

Personally, 'courier' is a good font - but it is kind of boring.

BTW: Is there a tool on RH that allows me to see what a font
actually looks like ?

Thanks.

[SLUG] delete crashes ...

2003-10-30 Thread Tiwari, Rajnish
hi All,

I have a multithreaded c/c++ app containing a simple
(self-developed)
queue. 3 operations -'insert(..)', 'retrieve()' 'length()'.
As part of 'retrieve' a call to 'delete' is made to remove the
head of the queue. Only 2 threads ever use this queue - strictly one
for
inserting and another for retrieving ( and yes access is mutex
protected
on all 3 operations ).

Although very _infrequent_, the problem is that the call
to delete in retrieve causes segmentation violation. It is a real
nuisance as
one may run the app many times without fail but on some occassions
it fails.

Has anyone encountered/resolved simliar problems in anyother app ?
Could this issue be the result of word alignment ?
I suspect a memory corruption - but I cannot seem to figure out
when/where/how it could happen.

One characteristic of the app is that this queue is hammered quite
intensively - both inserts and retrieves.

Any hints much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Rajnish

[SLUG] OT: [C/C++/CPP] Is it possible to do ...

2003-10-22 Thread Tiwari, Rajnish
Hi All,

I am stuck trying to decide on 2 courses of action - one
of which involves changes to loads of files (I wish to avoid
doing this if possible).

Currently, I have this C-function:
int DEBUG(char* xstr, int somelevel)
   {
 // pseudo-pseudo-code follows
 if ( somelevel  10 )
  print xstr;

 return 0;
   }

   char* fs(const char* fmt, ...);

And they are used as follows (as an example):
DEBUG( fs(%s%s, -, =), 25 );

I aim to deprecate the use of fs() - as you will see the call to
fs() is wasted its output isn't being printed. I aim to shove down
that responsibility to DEBUG itself.

   My Question:
Is it possible to do use C-processor macros to define fs() to
_become_ nothing, and call my new DEBUG with the follow prototype:
int NEW_DEBUG(int somelevel, const char* fmt, ...); ??

That is:
   #define fs(msg,...) ?? // leaves me with just msg,...
#define DEBUG(const char*, ... , level) NEW_DEBUG(level, const
char*, )

(Please note: I have used incorrect CPP syntax as I am trying
to get an idea across only [and also 'cos I don't know howto])

Is the above idea possible - or I should go ahead and do the
hundreds
of lines of changes ?

Thanks in advance.

of Ulead Video studio or Photo2VCD type applications.

I would like to convert a lot of photos into VCD format.
Anyother suggestions will be most appreciated.

 Thanks.

I had stopped kudzu thinking that once my boxen is all

RE: [SLUG] network problem

2002-09-04 Thread Tiwari, Rajnish

Hi,
My 2 bobs worth - but a long time ago I encountered
a similar problem on a HP-UX box. The problem turned
out that the system was trying to do a hard mount
at bootup rather than a soft mount. (The correct
terminology escapes me - 'twas a long time ago).

If hard mount is specified at bootup, and the remote
host cannot be contacted for whatever reason, then bootup
sequence will take a very long time as each 'mount' attempt
in fstab file has to fail with timeout. With a soft
mount, the actual mount happens when the specified
mount point is first attempted to be read.

Check to see that the hosts in question can be reached
from each other, hostnames resolved etc.

I am not too certain if there is similar concept in Linux,
although I have setup my slackware boxes for nfs mounts.

Good luck.

Rajnish

[SLUG] CDROM mounting Question.

2002-04-15 Thread Tiwari, Rajnish

Hi All,

Mount fails for any data CD on my rh7.2 box.
I have a ricoh CD-(Re)writer - on hdc. The /etc/lilo.conf
contains [append=hdc=ide-scsi]. And dmesg shows the
ricoh CDRW being detected. (This was the same drive
that was used to install rh7.2 onto this box).

So when I slot in a data CD (eg rh7.2 install cd 1/2),
and try to get it mount, it doesn't mount. (using either
/dev/scd0 or /dev/hdc).

With /dev/hdc the error message is no such device. And with
/dev/scd0, the error is somewhat long but about too may mounts
Whereas, tail of /var/log/messages shows something about invalid
command in request queue ?

Any ideas what may be the problem ? Is it more likely just a
plain old config problem or user (yours truly) ignorance ?
Either way, please englighten !!

Thanks in advance.

Hi All,

Finally figured out why I was experiencing the login

md5 checksum (??) error ...

Solution: Wiped off even the tiniest spec of dust off the
install CD (there was fingerprints on it !! mine) and tried
installing
again. It worked !! (Another valuable lession learnt -
handle CD's so as not to dirty the recorded surface).

Thanks all.

[SLUG] Login Problems - Redhat 7.2 [Longish]

2002-04-02 Thread Tiwari, Rajnish

Hi All,

Having been a slackware user since my first linux distribution,
over the weekend I took the plunge and installed RH 7.2.

Probably due to the peculiarities of my cheap hardware setup,
I got it to install on the 3rd attempt - in text mode. Nevertheless,
even the custom installation was quite easy. I am impressed.

I haven't yet installed X. Will do that only after I login. And
that is where my problem lies. I cannot seem to login - neither
as root nor as a normal user.

At the login: prompt on the console, when I type in root, I get
another login: prompt back !! No prompt for password nor a
error message (nor a successful login).

Yes, there is a root user account, and a password. (Checked it
by booting of CDROM, chosing 'linux rescue' at the prompt and
checking the installation under /mnt/sysimage/...).

I suspect it is to do with shadow passwords. Can I easily disable
it - by modifying some rc file or the likes ?

Any suggestions and recommendations on how I can login successfully
will be greatly appreciated. And thanks in advance.

Regards,
Rajnish

PS: I don't think I am in a good position to judge an entire
distribution
or OS based on installation (what a number of glossy win mags do) -
but Redhat install has had a profound effect on me - in more than
one way. So the next time I pick up some mainstream mag that has a
shallow linux coverage, I might actually care to read their verdict
on the installation process.
