  A Tribute to the Captain

  JUNE 27th, 1928 - JANUARY 23rd,
  2004 Bob Keeshan,
who enchanted millions of American children as television's
grandfatherly Captain Kangaroo, died in Vermont after a long
illness, his family said. He was 76.

  Keeshan did the Captain Kangaroo
show from 1955-84, entertaining countless Baby Boomers with his
kindly character and co-stars like Mr. Greenjeans, Bunny Rabbit,
snoozing Grandfather Clock and Mr. Moose.

  "Our
father, grandfather and friend was as passionate for his family as he
was for America's children," his family said in a statement. "He
was largely a privateman living an often public life, as an
advocate for all that our nation's children
deserved"

I bet Mr Rogers met him at the
Pearly Gates!!And I wonder if he said "knock knock" to Mr
Green Jeans? And I wonder if the ping pong balls started hailing
  from the sky??
We Love You, Captain !!! So
glad there is another angel in heaven to watch out for us!Thanks
  for the memories!!
  CELEBRATE THE CAPTAIN'S LIFE BY
  SHARING THIS TRIBUTE!!

Sometimes, when I drive across the desert in
the middle of the night, with no other cars around, I start
imagining: What if there were no

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Democratic presidential hopeful
Howard Dean (news
- web
sites) said Sunday that the standard of living for Iraqis is a "whole lot
worse" since Saddam Hussein (news
- web
sites)'s removal from power in last year's American-led invasion.

"You can say that it's great that Saddam is gone and I'm sure that a lot of
Iraqis feel it is great that Saddam is gone," said the former Vermont governor,
an unflinching critic of the war against Iraq (news
- web
sites). "But a lot of them gave their lives. And their living standard is a
whole lot worse now than it was before."

Dean commented as he campaigned through the final two days before New
Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary. He once led comfortably in the polls
here but now lags behind fellow New Englander John Kerry (news
- web
sites). "We are now within striking distance of winning," Dean told a rally
for women supporters.

Dean spent the day making campaign rounds with his wife, Judy Dean, who was a
non-presence in her husband's presidential campaign until a week ago. She was
part of a late, unsuccessful effort to stem a slide in support before Iowa's
caucuses, where Dean finished a disappointing third.

The former governor said in an interview on Saturday that he believes his
wife's presence is helping him, and his aides evidently believe so, too. The
campaign has said it is distributing 50,000 videocassette copies of an interview
the couple granted to ABC News on Thursday.

Dean turned down an invitation to appear on NBC's "Meet the Press" so he
could continue campaigning in New Hampshire before Tuesday's primary. As he
tries to regain prominence, Dean tells voters that he stood against the Iraq war
from the beginning while his leading rivals voted for the resolution authorizing
an invasion.

The issue launched Dean from a long-shot former governor to a leading
contender for the Democratic nomination. But polls on Iowa's caucus night showed
more anti-war voters chose Kerry over Dean.

"Now I would never defend Saddam Hussein," Dean told the "Women for Dean"
rally. "He's a horrible person. I'm delighted he's gone. Would there not have
been a better way to get rid of him in cooperation with the United Nations (news
- web
sites)?"

On the early morning of July 12, 1993 Jorge
Ochoa and Osvaldo Torres Aguilera, aka Osbaldo Torres and Oswaldo Aguilera,
broke into the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma home of Francisco Morales and his wife,
Maria Yanez. Torres and Ochoa, who broke into the home to rob it, entered the
Morales' bedroom and reportedly awakened the sleeping couple. The intruders
then opened fire, killing Morales and Yanez in their bed.
The shooting woke Maria's 14-year old
daughter Christina who called 9-11 and reported that shots had been fired.
Only, according to the 9-11 tape, the 14-year old reported that the shots may
have been fired by her step-father. Morales' 11-year old son, Francisco also
awoke when the first shot was fired. He witnessed a man in a black T-shirt
shoot and kill his father. Christina testified that she peeked out of her
bedroom and saw two men. One was wearing a white T-shirt. The other was
wearing a black one. The man in the black T-shirt had something in her hand,
but Christina admitted that she could not see what it was. After they were
arrested a block or so from the Morales home by police responding to the
"shots fired" call, Christina identified Ochoa as the man in the black T-shirt
and Torres as the man in the white T-shirt.
A few minutes before they broke into the
Morales home, Ochoa and Torres parked their car at a friend's house. A witness
at that location (identified from court transcripts as "Ms. Calderon") told
police that one of the men --Torres--took a small handgun from the back trunk
of the car and stuck it in his pants. (The description of the gun differed
from the weapon which Ochoa used to commit the murders.) Police stopped the
pair about a block from the Morales home because, as Oklahoma City police
officers Coates and Mullenix testified at the trial, the men were nervous,
sweating--and they had blood on their clothes. A search of the suspects
produced sufficient evidence that they were the guilty party. Morales'
billfold, containing $300 and the dead man's identification, and some of Maria
Yanez's jewelry were found on Torres.
  Positively identified by Christina Yenez,
Francisco Morales and Calderon, the pair was subsequently tried in the
District Court for Oklahoma County for the double murder. The first trial was
held in October, 1995. The trial judge was forced to declare a mistrial when
the jury could not reach a verdict Ochoa and Torres were retried in February,
1996. Found guilty of two counts of aggravated murder with malice aforethought
and one count of first degree burglary in March of that year, both men were
  sentenced to death.

Ochoa appealed his conviction to the Oklahoma
Court of Criminal Appeals in 1998 arguing that when he was arrested he was not
competent to stand trial; that his attorney was not competent; that he did not
have an unbiased jury and that. for several reasons enumerated in the
petition, he was denied due process. On June 30, 1998 the Appeals Court ruled
that Ochoa received a fair trial and the death sentence was upheld.
  Exhausting his own State post-conviction
remedies, Torres filed a writ of habeas corpus pursuant to 28 USC § 2254
asserting 26 violations of his constitutional rights. His petition demanded
that Michael Mullin, the warden of the Oklahoma State Penitentiary release him
from custody. His petition was denied.
Torres appealed to the U.S. District Court
for the Western District of Oklahoma. Once again, his petition was denied. On
January 23, 2003 Torres lawyers, Mark and Lanita Hendricksen of E; Reno,
Oklahoma appealed to the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. After reviewing
the case, the federal appeals court denied Torres's motion.
The Hendricksens sought assistance from the
Mexican government. At that time there were 52 Mexican citizens under death
sentences for in eight States. Mexican president Vicente Fox appealed to the
Bush Administration which, of course, was powerless to intrude in State
  jurisdictional issues.
In 1992 Texas governor Rick Perry (who was
serving out the balance of George W. Bush's gubernatorial term) ignored
appeals from Fox to spare the life of death row inmate Javier Suarez Medino.
  Medino was convicted of killing

  achievement of black students.

Trevor Richards, the Rambo twins' choice
for Westside High's "Distinguished African American Student"
award, moved from South Africa to Omaha six years
  ago.
That's why Paul and Scott Rambo, 16-year-old juniors,
blanketed Westside on Monday with posters touting a white youth from South
Africa for the "Distinguished African American Student" award.
"The posters were intended to be satire on the term
  African-American," Scott Rambo said.
The resulting flap left all three boys suspended from
Wednesday's classes and drew national attention to the mostly white school.
The Rambo twins stand by their actions, keeping them at odds with Westside
  officials.
"It's disruptive," Westside Principal John Crook said. "It
was offensive to the individual being honored, to people who work here and to
  some students."
Crook defends the idea of giving a special honor to a top
black student. Those who feel otherwise should have talked to him, he said,
rather than upsetting the tone of Martin Luther King Jr. Day with posters that
  some viewed as mocking.
"My heart sank," said this year's winner, Kingsley Okafor,
describing his reaction. "It shows the ignorance of the student body. I don't
  think they meant badly."
Westside's award has been given for about eight years. It was
first sponsored by the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, a group of
Omaha-area pastors who asked local high schools to select students for
recognition at their annual King luncheon.
Winners were selected based on grades, activities and goals.
Many of the recipients were black, but not all.
"It was not intended at the beginning to be one race only,"
said Clidie Cook, who helps organize the annual event.
But after picking two white students in the first year,
Westside officials felt the spirit of the award called for giving it to a
  black student.
By 2001, the ministerial alliance specified that the honor
was for black students. And starting in 2003, churches took over the selection
  process.
Westside continued to offer its own award, keeping it part of
  the school's King events.
That bothered Paul and Scott Rambo, two white students who
spent weeks discussing the unfairness of an award solely for blacks. Blacks
are eligible for every other award at Westside, they figured, so what was the
  point of a special honor?
The twins came up with their plan after talking to at least
10 other students who agreed with them, including one of the school's fewer
  than 70 black students.
Posters, they thought, were the most effective way to spur
debate and rally support before contacting administrators.
The posters featured a picture of a smiling Trevor Richards,
a junior who moved from South Africa to Omaha six years ago.
"They were pointing out an absurdity with an
absurdity," said Michael Duffy, a junior who said he was reprimanded for
collecting more than 160 signatures in support of the three boys. "That is the
  basic rule of satire."
But Principal Crook said the timing and the nature of the
posters was insensitive, preventing a healthy dialogue.
"My role is to make sure we have a safe environment,
physically and psychologically," he said. "We can't allow that kind of thing
to be hung up on our walls."
The incident sparked a national news story, interview
requests from as far away as Phoenix and an offer of legal support for the
boys from a Washington, D.C., group.
  "It got out of cont

  Oh I agree.

  This all started with MLK's
  birthday.

  So someone posted this:

  That's fine
with me if there was a Japanese, hispanichistory month or whoever, I
just dont' see the big deal. If they wanted their own
history month, they would fight for it.But if the
black people wanted it, what's the big deal that they fought for it and got
it? They didn't whine and bitch, they spoke up for theirselves which
many people just can't seem to handle. But I guess they
should just stay silent and not speak up for what they want just to make all
  us white folks happy.

And if they did have a white history month, what
exactly would be taught or celebrated?I'd really like to hear an
  answer to this one.

To which I replied with this:

It's not and shouldn't be a big deal.
That'sthe point. If this country is to ever become truly united, we need
to stop with all the hand holding, finger pointing and separation.
Declaring a month for blacks is just another way
to keep us as a whole people, divided.
I guess I prefer to look at the bigger picture
and to the future rather than dwell too long (like over 100 years too long)on
the past. The past helps us to make decisions for the future and at times it
defines who and what we are.
However, when you give it too much power, it
  will destroy you.
Constantly living a life where you want a group
of people to be beholden to you, is not healthy. It is just another way to
keep the racial war alive in this country. There is not a single slave alive
today. Nor a single white slave owner. Yet we are constantly reminded of what
we as whites, owe blacks. Why is it ok for reverse discrimination just because
it happened to someone else? Why should whites just suck up whatever racial
slurs we are given, or whatever discriminatory actions are made against us,
simply because "well blacks had to deal with it for years"? What is this type
of mentality teaching our children and future generations?
So, if I was an overweight kid that grew up
being taunted mercilessly for being a fat kid; then it would be ok if I turned
around and did the same thing to a new generation of fat kids?
How is that any better? What is that
accomplishing other than a vicious circle of hatred?

Repeatedly splitting this country by race and
racial issues is only fueling a potential future war within our borders, once
again. Unless we all put a stop to it.
You may not think blacks having their own
television stations, magazines and month long celebrations is fueling anything
but their pride in their heritage. But I can tell you, you are sadly
  mistaken.

One of the main targets of the Mars Express mission is to discover the
presence of water in one of its chemical states. Through the initial mapping
of the South polar cap on 18 January, OMEGA, the combined camera and
infrared spectrometer, has already revealed the presence of water ice and
carbon dioxide ice.

  Study: Red Sea parting was
  possible
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Russian mathematicians have
determined the legendary parting of the Red Sea that let the Jews flee Egypt
was possible, the Moscow Times reported.
The study, published in the Bulletin of the Russian Academy of Sciences,
focused on a reef that runs from the documented spot where the Jews escaped
Egypt, which in Biblical times, was much closer to the surface, according to
Naum Volzinger, a senior researcher at St. Petersburg's Institute of
Oceanology, and a colleague based in Hamburg, Alexei Androsov.
The mathematicians calculated the "strong east wind that blew all that
night" mentioned in the Bible needed to blow at a speed of 67 miles per hour
to make the reef, said Volzinger, who specializes in ocean phenomena, flooding
  and tidal waves.
"It would take the Jews -- there were 600,000 of them -- four hours to
cross the 4.2-mile reef that runs from one coast to another. Then, in half an
hour, the waters would come back," he said.
The Egyptian army that followed them drowned in the sea.
"I am convinced that God rules the Earth through the laws of physics,"
  Volzinger told the Times.

  J.K. Simmons, who
reprises the role of J. Jonah Jameson in the upcoming sequel film
Spider-Man 2, told SCI FI Wire that he gets a bit more to do in the
second movie based on Marvel Comics' most famous superhero. "A
little more than the first one, I think," Simmons said in an interview. "At
least we shot a little more. ... More fun wacky stuff in the office, and I
actually even get to step out of the office a couple of times in this one. ...
And there's at least one very fun twist involving my character."
  As in the first
Spidey movie, Simmons plays the irritable flat-topped editor of the Daily
Bugle and the only man in New York who thinks Spider-Man is a menace to
society. "[I] yell. Scream. Belittle people," Simmons said. "Be generally
curmudgeonly and unpleasant, although, as always, with a heart of gold,
really, underneath it all. There's a lot of very funny stuff like we did with
the first one. We had a good script to start with, but we also came up with a
lot of it on our own, [director] Sam [Raimi] and [star] Toby [Maguire] and I
and the rest of the cast."
  But Simmons remained
coy about the sequel's top-secret story, which takes place a few years after
the events of the first movie and introduces a new villain, Doctor Octopus,
played by Alfred Molina. "He's the new bad guy, and he's great," Simmons said.
"[And] Peter Parker's love life gets a little complicated." Spider-Man
  2 opens July 2.

Ron Reagan to Pen Anti-Bush
Editorial

AP

Ron Reagan is shown in this 1992
photo.Ron
Reagan, son of the former president of the United States, is set to
write an editorial piece for Esquire magazine urging the end of the Bush
administration.
Reagan co-hosted a panel discussion yesterday for The
Creative Coalition, the non-partisan lobbying group, at the Sundance Film
Festival along with "Lord of the Rings" star Sean Astin,
the inimitable "Joey Pants," Joe Pantoliano, and actor
Kevin Pollak.
Coincidentally, both Reagan's dad,
Ronald, and Astin's mother, Patty Duke,
were at one time presidents of the Screen Actors Guild. Of course, Reagan's
dad was also president of this country, but in Hollywood that doesn't count
as much.
Reagan has always been a vocal opponent of his father's
political party, but never as much as he is now. He told me he will write an
article of undetermined length for Esquire explaining why George W.
Bush should not be re-elected.
One reason, I inferred, was that Bush has blocked
stem-cell research for diseases such as Alzheimer's. Reagan is extremely
clear about his feelings on this subject, since his father, who will turn 93
next month, has been felled by this insidious illness.
"It's unbelievable that Bush doesn't approve stem-cell
research," Reagan said.
I also asked Reagan what he thought of the controversial
TV movie, made by CBS but aired on Showtime recently, about his family.
"I saw it on tape," he said. "Someone sent it to me. I
think my mother saw some clips from it. It looked to me like a 'Saturday
Night Live' sketch. I mean, it was just so bad. And who cared? James
Brolin did a terrible imitation of my father. Judy
Davis is a good actress, but she's not my mother. The problem is
that people made such a big deal out of it, but in the end it was
nothing."
Reagan and I reminisced about the days in the early 1980s
when he and his wife Doria, to whom he is still married,
lived on my block in New York. The Secret Service took up a lot of parking
spaces, which caused much grumbling.
"We left after 18 months," he said. "I never really liked
living in New York. I'm much happier in the country."
As for the panel discussion, I have to say that Astin is
turning into a very articulate and passionate newcomer on the celebrity
political scene. Some of this may be attributed to his mother, Patty, who
led the Screen Actors Guild through troubled times and won a lot of respect
from her peers. We can expect him to make even more of an impression as the
election year drags on.

Egyptian singer croons Americans 'are the ones who

A new song released by a popular Egyptian singer
 claims the U.S.
deliberately caused the destruction of the World
 Trade Center towers to make
 Arabs look bad.

Sha'ban Abd Al-Rahim's new album recently was
 reviewed in the Cairo Times.
The article was translated by the Washington,
 D.C.-based Middle East Media
 Research Institute http://www.memri.org/ .

Al Rahim's song Kharittat Al Tariq (Road Map)
 includes the line, Hey,
people, it was only a tower, and I swear by God that
 they [the U.S.] are the
 ones who pulled it down.

According to the published review, the song, which
 focuses on the Middle
East road map peace plan, puts to music popular
 notions in Egypt about
Israel, the Iraq war and September 11.

The song describes how America is the spitting
 image of Israel and it
carries out its desires, making the world into a
 'jungle.' But it does not
stop at that point. Abd Al-Rahim goes on to boldly
sing that the USA is the
perpetrator of the September 11th attacks, reports
 the Cairo paper.

Al-Rahim further sings that they purposely did it
 to make people think that
Arabs and Muslims are terrorists and were behind
 that disaster. Now the U.S.
can do what it pleases to the Arab world since
 everyone thinks they are to
 blame.

The song also mentions President Bush, quoting from
 some of his speeches.
One line states, Sometimes [Bush] says Iran and
 sometimes he says Syria,
and He shortens his speech if someone says Korea.

Al-Rahim's chief songwriter, who previously wrote
 hits entitled, I Hate
Israel and Striking Iraq, penned the road map
 song.

The album includes another nine songs that reflect
 the mood of the Egyptian
street... Despite the fact that the album has not
 been released yet, the
road map song has been a success on the music scene.
 Abd Al-Rahim has been
doing publicity for his new song by singing it at
 wedding parties and in TV
 interviews, the Cairo Times reported.

One fan named Muhammad, who has memorized the lyrics
 of Road Map, said,
To me, this is the first public and daring
 accusation made against America
concerning the September 11th attacks, and the song
will soon be the No. 1
 hit in the Arab world.

  Why Democrats
  usethe 'F-word'

  Posted: January 20,
  20041:00 a.m. Eastern
  2004Creators Syndicate, Inc.

The differences between Democratic and Republican positions on almost all
subjects of major importance are growing so great that it is fair to say we
are experiencing a second American civil war. These areas include the American
role in the world, the role of God and religion in American society, abortion,
capital punishment, the war in Iraq, and much more.
But four recent actions by Democrats illustrate that the divide is even
greater than many of us had imagined. It has to do with the preservation of
  our civilization.
First, last month, Democratic Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry used the F-word
in a formal interview with Rolling Stone magazine.
Second, at a recent evening event in Manhattan before 2,000 people, a
leading activist organization for the Democrats, moveon.org, featured a series
of entertainers whose presentations were laced with obscenities.
Third, at a fund-raiser in Manhattan in December, Democratic presidential
candidate Howard Dean attended a campaign fundraiser in which, according to
the New York Post, "pro-Dean comics competed to see how often they could use
the F-word in the same sentence."
Fourth, according to a front-page New York Times article, another
Democratic presidential contender, Gen. Wesley Clark, sent out an endorsement
letter written by the actress Madonna.
To the average liberal Democrat in America, none of these actions is worthy
of note, let alone of censure. To the liberal Democrat, public cursing (or, in
the case of Madonna, publishing a book of oneself in pornographic poses or
open-mouthed kissing another woman on national television) is of no
consequence. Indeed, they consider a person who does care about such things to
be an uptight individual who wants to inflict his uptightedness on everyone
else the liberals' very definition of a conservative.
To the rest of America, however, when a man who runs for president
deliberately uses the F-word in an interview with a national magazine, it is
cause for concern. Nearly all non-liberals and even some liberals would regard
such a person as one who has a different understanding of what preserves our
  civilization.
I do not believe for a moment that Sen. Kerry wishes to destroy this
civilization's rules of order. But I do believe that many well-intentioned
Democrats and liberals such as Sen. Kerry do not understand what makes our
civilization great (the most significant example being the preservation of the
Judeo-Christian value system). I also believe he used the F-word thinking it
would impress the largely liberal and hip young readers of Rolling Stone. In
other words, Sen. Kerry believes he can appeal to many liberals by coming off
as one who has overthrown some of the disciplines of our society.
That also explains the moveon.org evening of obscenities. "We're liberals
and Democrats; unlike Republicans and conservatives, we are liberated from
Western society's hang-ups in speech, in sex, in marriage, in the arts, in
  dress and elsewhere."
It needs to be understood that it is not the use of an expletive per
se that demands censure, let alone disqualifies a person from public
office. If it did, only the mute would qualify for office. Moreover, when
judiciously used, expletives can help a person let off steam in private and
can be legitimately used in eliciting laughs in some humor. The issue here is
  the public use of expletives.
If John Kerry curses on occasion in the company of his staff or his wife,
that is not the public's concern. But if he uses the F-word in public in an
interview, that is the public's concern. Many people do not understand this
public-private distinction. That is why some callers to my radio show objected
that I had never criticized President Bush's use of the word "a--hole" to
describe a New York Times reporter. I explained that the president used the
word only in a private remark to Dick Cheney when he assumed there was no
  microphone present.
The difference between using an expletive when you think no one can hear
you and when you want the world to hear you should be obvious to everyone. But
in part due to the unprecedentedly large number of people who have attended
college, the obvious often needs to be explained.

Gephardt Must Pay Salary Back to
  Missouri Taxpayers
Law requires absentee members of Congress to return
  paycheck
  According to the
U.S. Code, Presidential candidate and former House Minority Leader Dick
Gephardt is required to pay back 90 percent of his $157,000 salary to Missouri
taxpayers. Absentee Member Gephardt has missed more than 90 percent of votes
in the U.S. House, and the law requires the Secretary of the Senate and the
Chief Administrative Officer of the House to dock a member's pay for each
absent day. ACU filed a suit earlier today demanding that the law be enforced.
American Conservative Union chairman David A. Keene called Gephardt's
absences, "a callow shrugging off of the responsibility every Congressman has
to his constituents, all to appease his desire for presidential power."

  ACU also demanded
that Senators John Kerry and Joe Lieberman repay 59 percent and 54 percent of
their salaries, respectively, however Keene noted that, "no one has ever
abused this law as badly as Dick Gephardt."
  2 USC Sec. 39,
reads: "The Secretary of the Senate and the Chief Administrative Officer of
the House shall deduct from the monthly payments (or other periodic payment
authorized by law) of each Member or Delegate the amount of his salary for
each day that he has been absent from the Senate or House, respectively,
unless such Member or Delegate assigns as the reason for such absence the
sickness of himself or of some member of his family."
  "Can you name
another job in which someone can consistently miss nine out of every 10 days
and still receive a full paycheck," asked Keene. "Unless Dick Gephardt can
produce a note from his doctor, he owes the taxpayers an explanation or back
  pay."
"According to this law, the House is under obligation to dock Rep.
Gephardt's pay for missing so many days of work, and the ACU intends to hold
him accountable to the taxpayers who pay his salary. The law requires that
those taxpayers be compensated for such gross negligence, and ACU intends to
make Gephardt do the right thing," concluded Keene.

Mike Rowe thinks it's funny that his catchy name for a Web site design company
  sounds a lot like Microsoft.
  The
software giant, however, is not amused.
"Since my name is Mike Rowe, I thought it would be
funny to add 'soft' to the end of it," said Rowe, a 17-year-old computer user
and Grade 12 student in Victoria, British
  Columbia.
Microsoft and its attorneys have demanded that he give
up his domain name, the Vancouver Province newspaper reported Sunday.

Rowe registered the name in August. In November, he
received a letter from Microsoft's Canadian lawyers, Smart Biggar,
informing him he was committing copyright infringement.

  He
was advised to transfer the name to the Redmond, Wash.-based corporation.

  "I
didn't think they would get all their high-priced lawyers to come after me,"
  Rowe said.
  He
wrote back asking to be compensated for giving up his name. Microsoft's
lawyers offered him $10 in U.S. funds. Then he asked for $10,000.

  On
Thursday, he received a 25-page letter accusing him of trying to force
Microsoft into giving him a large settlement.
  "I
never even thought of getting anything out of them," he said, adding that he
only asked for the $10,000 because he was "sort of mad at them for only
  offering 10 bucks."
  He
said family and friends are backing him and a lawyer has offered to advise him
  for free.
He's also keeping his sense of humor.

"It's not their name. It's my name. I just think it's
kind of funny that they'd go after a 17-year-old," Rowe said.

Company spokesman Jim Desler said Sunday, "Microsoft
has been in communication with Mr. Rowe in a good faith effort to reach a
mutually agreeable resolution. And we remain hopeful we can resolve this issue
  to everyone's satisfaction."

Wash. (UPI) -- The world's richest man is spending big to create a residential
buffer around his own five-acre spread near Seattle, Wash., the Seattle Times
reported. Over the last decade Bill Gates quietly has spent $14 million buying
11 residential properties near his 48,000-square-foot Medina estate, which he
occupied in 1997."There's not too many non-Gates property owners left
here," said Herb Schwartz, a former insurance executive who moved into the
Medina neighborhood 13 years ago. The properties, totaling 4.2 acres, were
acquired by a representative for the Microsoft co-founder between 1994 and
2003 at a cost of nearly $14.4 million, according to property records. "This
is a family that holds privacy very dearly to them," said family spokesman Joe
Cerrell. "The properties create a buffer around the Gates home."The
purchases are common knowledge among neighbors such as Schwartz, who say Gates
employees occupy a number of the homes. At least two of the homes are still
occupied by people who sold their property to a Gates representative in
  2003.

Clark Calls for Bush Impeachment Probe
Democratic presidential candidate Gen. Wesley Clark is calling
on the House of Representatives to begin an impeachment probe into what he
says was President Bush's decision to invade Iraq under false pretenses.
Asked by a reporter if he thought Bush's decision to attack Iraq
constituted an "impeachable offense," Clark said Thursday, "Let's have that
  investigation done."
Asked next if he thought the president's decision to go to war was
"criminal," Clark told the Associated Press, "I think that's a question
  Congress needs to ask."
"I think this Congress needs to investigate precisely" how the United
States wound up in a war "that wasn't connected to the threat of al-Qaeda,"
  the former NATO commander said.
"This was an elective war. [Bush] forced us to go to war," he complained.
Gen. Clark's comments raise questions about whether his call for a Bush
impeachment probe was encouraged by ex-President Clinton, who in 1998 became
the first-ever elected U.S. president to be impeached.
Before he entered the race in September, Clinton touted Clark as a
Democratic Party "star" and has lately begun making fund-raising phone calls
on his behalf. Clark himself has admitted that he entered the race at the
urging of New York Sen. Hillary Clinton.
Clark's campaign is staffed by ex-Clinton advisers and campaign operatives,
including Chris Lehane, who co-authored the written version of Mrs. Clinton's
"vast right-wing conspiracy" theory in 1997.
Both the former president and Sen. Clinton have been seeking ways to
mitigate the impeachment stain on their legacy.
At the outset of her book tour last June, Sen. Clinton complained about her
  husband's impeachment, telling ABC News:
"I would say that there is a very well-financed right-wing network of
people that was after his presidency from the very beginning. [They] really
stopped at nothing, to the point of perverting the Constitution, in order to
undermine what he was trying to do for the country."

Democratic Defection By Edward I. Koch January 12, 2004

Let's hear it for a Democrat who exibits
  uncommon good sense.

  Democratic
  Defection
  By Edward I. Koch January 12, 2004I am a lifelong Democrat. I
was elected to New York's City Council, Congress and three terms as mayor of
New York City on the Democratic Party line. I believe in the values of the
Democratic Party as articulated by Presidents Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry
Truman, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson and by Senators Hubert Humphrey,
Henry "Scoop" Jackson and Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

  Our philosophy is: "If you
need a helping hand, wewill provide it."

  The Republican Party's
philosophy, on the other hand, canbe summed up as: "If I made it
on my own, you will have to do the same."Nevertheless, I intend to
vote in 2004 to reelect President Bush. I will doso despite the
fact that I do not agree with him on any major domestic issue, from tax policy
to the recently enacted prescription drug law. These issues, however, pale in
importance beside the menace of international terrorism, which threatens our
  very survival as a nation.

  President Bush has earned
my vote because he has shown the resolve and courage necessary to wage the
war against terrorism. The Democratic presidential contenders,
unfortunately, inspire no such confidence. With the exception of Senator Joseph
Lieberman, who has no chance of winning, the Democrats have decided that in
order to get their party's nomination, they must pander to its radical
left wing. As a result, the Democratic candidates, even those who
voted to authorize the war in Iraq, have attacked the Bush administration for
its successful effort to remove aregime that was a sponsor of terrorism
and a threat to world peace. The Democrat now leading in the race,
former governor Howard Dean, is a disgrace. His willingness to publicly
entertain the slander that President Bush had advance warning of the September
11 attacks and his statement that America is no safer as a result of the
capture of Saddam Hussein should have been sufficient to end his candidacy.
But the radicals who dominate the primaries love the red meat that is thrown
to them, even when it comes froma mad cow.In contrast,
President Bush has confronted the terrorist threat head on. Immediately
following the September 11 terrorist attacks, the president presented the core
principle of what has become known as the Bush Doctrine, an articulation of
American foreign policy that rivals in importance the Monroe Doctrine, which
barred foreign imperialism from the Western Hemisphere, and the Truman
Doctrine, which sought to contain communism around the world. The Bush
Doctrine, simply stated by the president, is: "We will make no distinction
between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor
them."President Bush has lived up to that credo. Under his leadership,
Afghanistan was liberated from Al Qaeda's patron, the Taliban. The president
also has demonstrated, through the liberation of Iraq from the tyranny of
Saddam Hussein, that he is willing to wage a preemptive war when he believes
the national interests of the United States are endangered.Even if we
never find weapons of mass-destruction in Iraq - though I think that we will -
our military campaign for regime change was justified. If the bodies of a
quarter-million Iraqi dissenters killed by Saddam, some tortured with their
eyes gouged and tongues cut out, is not proof enough, there is still Saddam's
undisputed use of weapons of mass destruction against his own people and Iran.
That record is why Congress overwhelmingly voted to authorize the use of force
in Iraq.It is not only in Afghanistan and Iraq that President Bush has
risen to meet challenges presented by our increasingly dangerous world. When
the president labeled Iraq, Iran and North Korea an "axis of evil," many
commentators mocked him. When he threatened Syria, Iran and Libya with serious
consequences if they continued to support terrorist groups, there were those
who denounced him for being too bellicose. Now, however, it appears that the
president's hard line has begun to pay off. Recently, Libya
agreedto dismantle its weapons of mass destruction programs and
allow in international inspectors. There are even indications that Iran and
  possiblyNorth Korea may permit internationa

Subject: [Sndbox] U.S Treasury Announces Recall of New Minnesota
Quarters

The United States Treasury has announced they are recalling the new
Minnesota quarters.

We are recalling all of the new Minnesota quarters that were  recently
issued, Treasury Undersecretary Russell Shackelford said in a
press  conference Monday.

This comes in the wake of numerous reports to this agency  that the
quarters
will not work in parking meters, toll booths, vending  machines, pay phones
or other coin-operated devices.  We believe the  problem lies in a design
flaw, said Skackelford.

The winning design for the Minnesota quarter was submitted by Sven  Petersen
and Ole Johnson of Hibbing, Minnesota.  Sven commented,  Apparently, the
duct
tape holding the two dimes and nickel together keeps  jamming the
coin-operated  devices.

U.S. Tests Show No Traces of WMD in Iraqi Shells
A fourth round of tests conducted on mortar shells found in
Iraq 10 days ago by Danish troops have determined that they did not contain
chemical weapons, contradicting earlier field tests by British and Danish
  experts last week.
The results of the latest evaluation by the U.S. Department of Energy's
National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory in Idaho were announced
Sunday by the Danish Army Operational Command.
The results mirrored findings late last week by a U.S.-led Iraq Survey
Group, which was dispatched to the site in Basra last week after the British
and Danish tests indicated the shells contained a form of mustard gas.
The Danish troops initially found 36 shells, exposed by rain, in the ground
outside a village near Qurnah on Friday. They were leaking a liquid deemed
suspicious, since mortars usually contained solid explosives.
"This was a stash. They were stacked and ordered and wrapped in plastic,"
Danish spokesman, Capt. Kim Vibe Michelsen told the Associated Press.
Michelsen said the 120mm shells "don't look like any known" mortars in the
  Iraqi arsenal.
Villagers in Qurnah told the Danish troops that they had found about 400 or
more shells some years ago and threw them in the Tigris River.
The area was the scene of intense fighting during the Iran-Iraq war. The
villagers told the Danes that one 1984 battle fought there lasted seven days.
When local residents retuned to Qurnah after the battle, all their cattle
were dead and the area was littered with human bodies, Michelsen said he was
told. None of the dead bore gunshot wounds, but all were bleeding from the
mouth and nose - symptoms consistent with the use of mustard gas.
Some villagers also complained they were of coughing blood for some time
afterwards, and local livestock continued to get sick and bleed from the
  mouth.
"This is a clear indication of chemical weapons use," Michelsen told the
  AP.
The Danish Army Operational Command said it would try to determine the
nature of the liquid that was in the Iraqi shells, why it tested positive for
mustard gas and whether there was any link to past chemical weapons use in the
  area.

Three adults who want to live together as a husband and
two wives asked a federal court this week to strike down Utah's ban on
polygamy as a violation of their constitutional
rights. The plaintiffs are G. Lee Cook and D.
Cook, a married husband and wife, and J. Bronson, the woman who wants to join
them in a "plural marriage." According to the lawsuit filed on their
behalf by the Utah Civil Rights Liberties Foundation, the Cooks and
Bronson share "sincere and deeply held religious beliefs" in polygamy as it
was practiced in the early decades of the Mormon Church. Acting on those
beliefs, the three of them went on Dec. 22 to the Salt Lake County Clerk's
Office, where Mr. Cook and Ms. Bronson applied for a marriage license.
But since Cook acknowledged that he was already married -- his wife was right
there with him -- the license was refused.
"The law makes it very clear that they can't be married to more than one
person," the county clerk told the Salt Lake Tribune. "We're here
issuing licenses according to the law." That law is written right into
Utah's constitution, which declares: "Polygamous or plural marriages are
forever prohibited." And that, the plaintiffs argue, deprives them of
their religious freedom and privacy rights under the
Constitution. It's an open-and-shut case, of
course. They haven't got a prayer. Or
have they? Last June, in Lawrence v. Texas,
the US Supreme Court overturned a Texas anti-sodomy law on the grounds that
the Constitution protects "an autonomy of self that includes freedom of . . .
certain intimate conduct." Five months later, guided in part by
Lawrence, the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts ruled that the age-old
ban on same-sex marriage was "incompatible with the constitutional principles
of respect for individual autonomy." The essence of civil marriage, said
the SJC in Goodridge v. Dept. of Public Health, is simply "the exclusive and
permanent commitment of the married partners to one
  another." Well, if that, constitutionally
speaking, is what makes a marriage -- the intimate union of permanently
committed partners -- why shouldn't the trio in Utah be allowed to
marry? On what principled ground can they be denied the protections and
benefits of matrimony? To be sure, Utah isn't
Massachusetts and federal court isn't the SJC. But logic is logic.
If judges in one jurisdiction can decide that the right to marry includes the
right to change the very definition of marriage, judges in another
jurisdiction can do the same thing. Some
advocates argue that it is insulting to compare a homosexual person's wish for
a same-sex spouse with a polygamist's wish for multiple spouses. "Gay
people are not asking for the right to marry anyone," writes Andrew Sullivan,
a leading champion of same-sex marriage. "We're asking for the right to
marry someone. Would-be polygamists already have a legal option: to
marry a single other person." But of course
gay people have always had exactly the same option. They are free to
marry someone of the opposite sex, and throughout history, countless
homosexuals have done exactly that. Nevertheless, Sullivan claims, for
gays and lesbians, opposite-sex marriage "is no meaningful option at
all." Isn't that exactly what the Utah
plaintiffs would say about binary marriage? According to a "doctrinal
overview" they filed with the court, so-called fundamentalist Mormons regard
plural marriage as "a doctrine revealed by God, obedience to which is
necessary for their desired eternal exaltation." A freakish
notion? Until very recently, that is what the vast majority of Americans
thought about same-sex marriage, too. The
implication of Lawrence and Goodridge is that the only people entitled to
decide whether an intimate relationship is meaningful enough to deserve legal
protection are the parties to that relationship themselves. If other
courts follow suit, the damage inflicted on marriage as we know it -- indeed,
on the social order as we know it -- will be
considerable. This is why the power to define
marriage has always been vested in the political branches of government, not
  the courts. The Massac
