RE: [RCSE] Charging NiMh's with Sirius Pro Charger?

2001-03-20 Thread George Joy

Hi Guys,
For the record, The Sirius Pro-Series will NOT false peak with either
NiCd or NiMH. Fasle peaking is not the problem, it is that they could be
overcharged because of the almost linear "curve". The larger the battery
the flatter the "curve". The computer chip is designed for both and it is
the best charging chip on the market.
Many users are charging beyond what we will warrant for company
policy (270 to 1200 NiMh) and I have been told that they are getting good
results.

Re: [RCSE] Battery deals?

2001-03-20 Thread Bill Swingle

Yes, many of the batteries on this site:

http://www.igo.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ExecMacro/main.d2w/report?page=closeout#
8

...can be used for our hobby. There are some good prices, too. Remember that
all that is needed is a proper voltage and a sufficiently large amp hour
rating. Thus, all the 4.8V, 6V and 9.6V are possible candidates.

However, the batteries listed are for camcorders, cellphones, etc... To use
them will require breaking off a plastic case and soldering on some leads and
an appropriate plug. Not difficult but time consuming.

There were several 12V sealed lead acid batteries that caught my eye.

The chargers listed don't seem very useful for us. But, the site doesn't give
sufficient information to know for sure.

Re: [RCSE] Thermal expansion of lead!!

2001-03-20 Thread Blstujr

People who cast a lot of lead(as in bullets) will tell you that a 10lb pot
can be emptied explosively by a drop or two of water. I have never had this
experience due to extreme caution, but I have heard of a drop of sweat
causing it. Among bullet casters "no water" is rule #1 in the manual. Lead
will stick to whatever it hits and continue to burn til it cools. I used to
cast bullets by the hundreds before changing interests.

Re: [RCSE] Charging NiMh's with Sirius Pro Charger?

2001-03-20 Thread Ralph Weaver

The charging chip in the Sirius chargers was made to do NiMH as well as
NiCd cells. This chip is the best one available for charging cells that
are used at low currents like RX and TX batteries.

It has a much more sophisticated algorithm than any other charger chip. It
stops just before the peak and then does a "top off" charge. Much better
for NiMH than a peak detect.

SV: [RCSE] Thermal expansion of lead!!

2001-03-20 Thread Kjelli

I used to work at a plaace where we were melting iron. And we had a oven that was
submerged down in the floor. This made it easy to put more metal in the oven. The
whole unit could be rised and tilted for getting the 1000Degr. celsius iron out of the
oven.

When one stood beside it, one could throw a cup of coffe down and nothing happened,
(except for alot of steam comming up). The cofee vaporized on the surface. The problem
was when using iron that was rusty or wet. When this was put into the oven, the water
got below the melted iron surface, and the vaporize. This useually ended 2 ways.
Either it came a good poff sound and sparckles were raining for 10 seconds (really
cool). Or, if it was alot of water ore the water came deep before vaporizing, one
would hear a 4Xshotgun noise, and really BIG sparcks would come down for around
30seconds.

Good laugh for us that stood behind the bullet-proof window though. Never got used to
standing next to the oven when that happened. :))

Cheers
Kjelli

For the record, I've been charging my tx 1600ma. NiMh pack off my Sirius Pro
for about 8 months now and have had no problems at all. I gotten *much*
longer run times from it than from my 1100 ma. Nicad pack.

RE: [RCSE] Charging NiMh's with Sirius Pro Charger?

2001-03-20 Thread Walba, Rick

Almost all fast chargers, including the Sirius, are capable of false peaks,
on any battery type. The Alpha 4 may be as reliable for NiMh as it is said
to be for NiCd, but it would not be fully automatic, it would switch from
fast charge to a very high trickle.

For rx packs then, I just bring several to swap out at the field. For all
other charging needs, the Dymond Super Smart or FMA SuperNova will do.

Subject:[RCSE] Charging NiMh's with Sirius Pro Charger?

RCSE'rs,

I'm currently using a Sirius Pro Charger for my NiCd batteries and
I'm looking
to get some new NiMh's:
http://www.siriuselectronics.com/pro_ser.htm

I've been looking around on the web, and it seems that most fast
changers
(Sirius included) were designed for NiCd batteries, and that NiMh's
have a
different charging curve which can cause quick chargers to damage
the
batteries.

Anybody have any experience with this? Can NiMh's be fast charged
with a
Sirius charger? If not, what are Sirius owners doing? (Besides
buying new
chargers or staying away from NiMh ... hah, pre-empted the flames!)
;)

Cheers,
Brad
