[RCSE] Visiting Albuquerque and Santa Fe

2001-06-27 Thread ALNephew

>From July 12 to 20, I'll be visiting Albuquerque (into Monday the 16th), and
then Santa Fe until Friday the 20th. Can anyone give me directions to the HLG
or TD fields and slope sites in both these areas? Also, I'm wondering if
anyone is planning to be at any of these sites on a particular day during
these periods; if so, I'll try to be there then.

I'll be bringing a couple of HLGs and possibly a foamie sloper.

TIA

Re: [RCSE] Futaba Receiver

2001-06-27 Thread Brett Jaffee

There is no difference between the 8UAF and the 8UAP transmitters, except for the
labeling and what receiver they come packaged with. Both can be made to transmit in
PPM or PCM.

[RCSE] New to the sport

2001-06-27 Thread Levi Green

Hey all!

One beautiful Saturday I drove up the the Nation Center for Atmospheric
Research here in Boulder CO. At the top of this plateau just at the
base of the mountains, I found half a dozen or so guys all flying
various planes. After just a few minutes I noticed the distinct lack of
noise other than the wooshing sound as they flew by. I was hooked
instantly.

Now I'm building my first sailplane (House of Balsa 2x4) not more than
three weeks later. I originally thought a HLG would be easy to start
off with as they were slower, didn't reqire anything to get it airborne,
and when I crash I imagine it won't be more than a few feet off the
ground (for a while anyway). Iv'e come to the conclusion now that a
larger plane would be easier to start with (I'll get one of those too
). The kit calls for standard sized servos, and final weight should
be around 28oz +/- a couple oz. Would it be better to go with micro
servos for this sized plane?

So, now for the radio. I have a fairly limited budget. I have pretty
much narrowed it down to a Hitec Flash 5 (std servos), or a slightly
used Multiplex Cockpit MM (TX only). I was looking for an entry level
computer radio that could grow with me until I get to the point of not
putting the radio down, then I'll move up. How do these radios compare
to each other? Is there something in a similar price range (150-175ish)
I should also consider?

TIA,

Levi

Hey Richard,

I have a chronus myself that does the same thing from time to time. Its old
and I need to replace it. I found a site that has a watch that looks
exactly like the chronus. Check it out. If you buy one let me know how it
works out as I plan to buy one myself in the near future.

Seeing as its a 2 channel plane, micros will only save you 2-3 ounces. Its probably
not worth it, plus, the standards will hold up better to abuse, should you crash. The
standards will contribute to nose weight anyway (which is generally needed).

I only have experience with the Flash, but its a great radio for the price, especially
when you consider that a lot of non-computerized 6 channel radios cost almost as much.
If you are a on limited budget, that's what I'd get. Keep in mind that it is really
optomized for planes with only 2 wing servos (one for each aileron), and probably
won't work too well if you get a 4 servo wing, full-house ship (rudder, elevator,
ailerons, and flaps).

BTW, were the guys you were watching flying off a slope?
