Re: [RCSE] Rubber ducky antenna's illegal in competition

2001-12-03 Thread Bill Harris

Not to fan the Great Duckie Debate, but I agree with Jason. If a short or
baseloaded antenna is type-certified by the manufacturer for that Tx, then
it's useable. If not, then don't. Likewise, you _can_ get by with
changing the Tx xtal to change channels or you can drive without wearing a
seatbelt but that doesn't meant that it's good practice or it's prudent.

David,
Not to blast you, but this has been discussed extensively in the past.
The simple answer is this:

The AMA requires that their members abide by the FCC and all
local/national laws. The FCC type certifies the units and the modules to
work. There are lists of certified combinations of transmitters, contact
the FCC to get one. The transmitters are normally certified with their
installed antenna, and can only be operated legally with that, BUT in
some
cases the manufacturer (or 2nd party) has made more than one antenna
available and certified it. JR is a great example with their base loaded
whip antenna as they spent the money to certify most of their Txs with it.
So the answer is that most rubber ducky's and whips are not legal, but
in some cases they are. As the user of the transmitter, it is your
responsibility to know if your combination is legal or not, and abide b
that. Your local FCC office can provide you with the certification papers.

On the AMA and legal side. The AMA is not going to hunt you down. It
is not their responsibility. BUT if you do cause injury/harm and a lawsuit
results, there is a small, very small chance that since you were using
illegal equipment (again technically), they you can be found at fault for
that accident.

On the practical side, if it works you should be ok. The likelyhood
of
getting caught or fined (the normal FCC sanction) is small. Accidents are
rare also.

So are the Rubber Ducky (and all non factory antenna's)
illegal in AMA competitions? If they're not certified
  by the FCC that is?
Can I only use one for personal fun flying, or might that
cause our AMA insured flying area too?

Re: [RCSE] Receiver in an HLG

2001-12-03 Thread Marcio

I was going to buy a feather for a HLG Im building. I thought the .60 ounces
less weight was worth the limited range.
Now, as more and more bad comments are raised against the Fether, I'm in
doubt.
Please help me anyone with experience in this matter.

Thanks in advance.

Get the 555. The feather is not nearly up to the task. Even if it met
 the
1000' claim (more like a glitchy 200' in my experience) you want to be
 able to fly further out.

RE: [RCSE] cold (or cool) weather gloves

2001-12-03 Thread Bill Swingle

Instead of gloves I find it much more convenient to use a transmitter mitt.
Here's the one I use:

If it gets very cold I'll combine the mitt with gloves. If it gets super
cold I put hand warmers in my gloves. Cold hands kill the fun.

Hey now,
I use bicycle touring gloves. Nice, warm, and no fingertips so I

There's als hunter's gloves set up so you can slide one finger and
thumb out, even better... Then there's the transmitter mitts but they're
too warm for my conditions.

[RCSE] high lift pss!

2001-12-03 Thread Erica and or Rob

Hey now,
I must be learning to fly after all this time. I was given a very
used BD-5 pss plane with a chunk out of the wing. I filled the hole with a
large piece of balsa and cleaned the whole thing up. The thing's got a
42 span and weighs around ninty oz., talk about a hiugh wing loading!

Well this weekend at pacifica the wind was up and I finaly got up the
nerve to fling it off the cliff.

I've never flown so fast (non-powered) This thing made my avocet feel like
a floater! serious verticals, and rolls like I've never seen before, like
eight or more in level flight! I'm hooked! Now to get rid of all my
midlevel planes... My Bob Martin coyote, and wood fuse rennegade are
slugs! The Avocet seems slow! GIVE ME FLYING BRICKS!!! This is just like
flying a pattern ship! I gotta build a clean one next (the bd has had four
previous owners and it's beat! but wooo hooo!). I.S.R. here I come!!!
RobII
P.S. thanks for leting me spew this at somebody, my wife just doesn't
understand...

[RCSE] Ellipse 2V for sale, includes rare electric Ellipse fuse.

2001-12-03 Thread Barry Baskin

I am making room for other toys and something must go. Ellipse 2V for sale.
Perfect F3F glider or all around sloper.I am selling this with an additional
Ellipse 2ET, the electric fuse. The 2V is a yellow fuse, wing is yellow top/
purple bottom and it has Ellipse 2 on the upper wing. It has hitec 85 MG's
throughout. It has the usual minor scratches under the wing. One wing tip
was damaged on the leading edge but it comes with a new tip plus the old
tip. Nose cone has scratches from landings.
Also included is an electric fuse for those days when the gliders are
grounded. This Ellipse 2ET, T-tail fuse, brushless Kontronic motor, speed
controller, Rx and Rx battery are all included. Fuse has damage from some
crashes, all repaired. This plane goes up like a rocket and the pack gives u
3 climbouts to speck height! The wing from the glider is simply transferred
to the electric or vice versa. It is very easy to access the battery and
motor as the e-cone slips out of the e-fuse.
As new the whole package would cost over $2700. Asking $1400 or best offer
for whole package. Shipping extra From Walnut Creek, California.

[RCSE] Success! 1st molded fuse.

2001-12-03 Thread John Gossett

By now you should be use to my chatty ways. :-)

The layup was 1 layer 0.75 oz FG, 4 CF tows down sides
and around hatch and wing saddle area, and 1 layer 3
oz satin weave FG (on bias). Came out of the mold at
0.5 oz. The lost foam too-much-epoxy fuse weighed in
at 2.3 oz. Since I made the nose a tad longer on the
new one, I hope to not have to add the nearly 2 oz
lead to balance the new plane and I hope to be able to
keep her around 10oz, compared to the 15.4 oz I had
for the last one.

The layup I used seems a bit squishy in a couple of
areas between the seams and the tows, especially the
bottom under the wing saddle area. I figure the ply
blocks I'm going to glue into the saddle to bolt the
wings down will help that be less of a problem. God
willing, I will have the plane built by this weekend.
Lots-o-fun!

Although I looked at a lot of web sites to get
information, I kept coming back to Chris Adams site
at:

http://scrollsander.com/Soaring-Fuselayup.htm

and the photos provided by Tracy Brown at:

RE: [RCSE] cold (or cool) weather gloves

2001-12-03 Thread Rick Meredith

What I've used in the past has been glove liners for motocross gloves.
They're thin wool gloves that are designed to go inside your existing
motocross gloves. Where they differ from what you're using now is that
the palms up through the finger tips are covered with a polka dot
pattern of rubberized dots, giving you good grip even when wet. The ones
I have are several years old and made by JT. You can get them from most
motorcycle accessory places.

As winter approaches here in Southern California, I'm wondering what
other guys use to keep their hands warm while flying in reasonably cool,
or cold conditions. I have a pair of thin wool gloves. They do a
pretty good job of protecting my hands from the wind chill, but they
make it very slippery when trying to handle a plane for launching, or
even just holding a radio. Anyone have a better suggestion for a thin
(i.e. not cumbersome) glove that is fairly grippy?

[RCSE] Re: Olympic II

2001-12-03 Thread Lincoln Ross

I'd guess a size 12W tennis or maybe the Aquila airfoil. If you're
scratch building, why not do something like a d-tubed Clark Y? Would
probably fly better, tho more work. You'd have to work to keep the tips
light. THere's probably a hi tech equivalent that would be just a bit
better, I suppose, but that's not as much fun. I think Selig has done a
flat bottom high lift airfoil, but I don't know if it's any good. BTW, I
don't mean a generic that reminds me of a Clark Y, I mean a REAL CLark
Y with the exact coordinates.

The Oly flys really well, but it is rather slow. I think the Clark Y
would slow down about the same but go faster when needed. I put my stock
Oly in the trees earlier this year when I flew aggressively and couldn't
get back.
