Re: [RCSE] Taboo DLG launching technique - rudder mods?
Question: Should my hand/palm be facing forward or backward (like if I did not use a peg at all) when I grip the wing tip? When I use the throwing peg my palm is having forward, the wing is between my first and second fingers, and the peg rests in the first knuckle of my fingers. I have been getting about 50 feet on a toss either way, but I feel like i should be able to put a lot more into it... of course I need to learn the proper technique - any help!!?? I learned my technique on a 43 DLG and got to experiment. When I got the Taboo it was a couple minutes before I was trying full blown launches. Some tips. Do not snap your wrist at release, it adds too much yaw and causes the plane to turn. The wingtips should be the same height off the ground when you release. If the outer tip is high the plane turns left. Whether you are doing a full 360 degree rotation with your body or just starting by facing downwind, as you pivot on your foot your throwing arm should have your elbow straight and the arm is still lagging behind. As you face upwind and plant your upwind foot you sweep you arm forward and you release. My best advice is try it going slow first. Work on technique then start adding speed. About the rudder... I never land at such a speed that the plane travels more than a couple inches on the ground. I did glue the bottom edge of the vertical stab (where it contacts the ground) with CA, both for reinforcement and to keep the water out. [RCSE] Can someone cut me a wing?
I know this is a long shot but I want to make a second wing for my Ninja. I have NO cutting equipment, or experience. I intend to make a wing JUST like the normal Ninja wing, but put a 24-36 center section in, to increase the wingspan. That way I can either fly it in light lift (maybe even thermal it) or ballast it up to go faster :) I already glued my wing together so I can't trace the airfoil template but I'd be willing to pay (when I have some more $$) to have it done, at a reasonable price of course. Does anyone have any ideas? I'd even be willing to cut it myself but I have no idea where to get started. I don't mind cutting with just a bow. But I don't have a power supply to do it (only a 12V 2A laying around). Does anyone have some links on how to build cheap cutting equipment? What about buying foam for the cores? And last, but not least, what kind of spar system do I need (or do I need one) when building a 7 or 8 foot wing? I suppose I'd need to make it 3 piece to fit in the truck- don't have an 8 foot bed. I guess I could always strap it down and let it hang off of the tailgate LOL. Sorry for the bombardment of questions You all have been very patient and friendly in your replies and I appreciate that very much. I wish I had this when I started flying when I was a teenager, I might not have had that ridge runt blown behind the slope (and consequently re-kitted) in the first 5 seconds of flight. [RCSE] Spirit for sale at TNT
Looking for a good beginner's sailplane? If you're coming to Dallas, I have a deal for you: I'll be selling a built, RTF Spirit at the Texas National Tournament in Dallas this weekend. The Spirit is built with the two-piece wing option, spoilers installed. Never crashed, flies great, although lots of patches on the undersides of the monokote from flying over tall weeds. Airtronics VG4R radio (AM, CH 56) with three 831 servos installed. This radio is gold stickered with the old receiver, and needs new batteries installed before I'd trust it to fly, but the servos alone are probably worth the price. $80 or best offer. [RCSE] Skegs and Rules
Gents, Not to continue this discussion to the point _everyone_ is sick of it, but I'd like to make a little point about contest rules in general. In general, good contest rules result in airplanes that people like to fly even when they are not in a contest - that is, sport flying. Innovations that make flying more fun, easier or safer are good. Innovations that let models last longer, be less expensive or take less time to build are also good. An example of the former is composite, full house sailplanes - these were developed in competition but are now common sport models because they are fun and fly so well. An example of the latter is EPP (foamy) models: long lasting, cheap and fast to make! None of these were outlawed because of the clear value of the innovations. Skegs are controversial because they can have both positive and negative implications for sport flying. The thesis of this note is that it is possible with a little rules work to separate the positive from the negative. First, a definition of skeg. To me, a skeg is a ventral fin located behind the aircraft center of gravity that is designed to support much of the weight of the airplane upon landing. Some skegs do this without digging into the field or otherwise creating high friction while others are designed to dig in and plow the field. The value of the skeg in competition landings is that it results in a nose-down airplane attitude that reduces or reverses the wing lift such that the landing slide is reduced. Secondarily, because the skeg is near the CG it tends to inhibit strong yaw motion on touchdown, preventing flip-overs common in planes with a lot of dihedral. The additional value of a skeg in sport flying is that it protects the bottom of the fuselage, wing, tail, flaps and ailerons. I have used skegs on sport models since 1986 and I value their contribution to my model's longevity and landing consistency much more than the small performance loss. The protection of the airplane is especially important to those of us who fly from dirt and gravel fields. Where skegs become problematic is when they are used as, or with, landing arrestors. I define a landing arrestor as a device intended to dig into the field such that it is not mere friction, but rather a mechanical connection to the field is created. Examples of arrestors include the nose of the airplane in a dork landing, sharks teeth, and forward-swept skegs with a sharp tooth or teeth. Divots, craters (!) and furrows are the products of an arrested landing. The problem with arrested landings is that they are very tough on the airplane. They can damage the fuselage, wing and radio gear, and shake all manner of stuff loose inside the airplane. I hate to make dork landings or abruptly stop my models, even in competition, not to mention sport flying. So, I propose that some contests outlaw arrested landings while permitting skegs. The shape of skegs could be specified to make them ineffective as arrestors. For instance, the leading edge to tip transition of the skeg could be required to have a radius of no less than 1.0 inch (25 mm for the rest of the world) with the bottom of the skeg parallel to the bottom of the fuselage. If the skeg were piano wire it would would be required to follow this leading edge shape. If you are going to make such a rule then all arrestors and dork landings should be outlawed as well. Such rules could lead to short, consistent landings with models that are protected from flipping and lower surface scrapes. My two cents worth. That's all for now. Re: [RCSE] Taboo DLG launching technique - rudder mods?
Palm forward. The action could be similar to a golf swing where you want to apply a constant acceleration, stopping acceleration just before release. This is very subtle and may be difficult to perceive. Start with about a 90 degree rotation then when comfortable move to the point where you get a full 360 degree rotation. It's important not to force the plane and cause it to yaw before release. This has worked for me. Hopefully it will continue to work this year. :-) SECOND ANSWER I fly the Xterminator Pro from http://www.PolecatAero.com I CAd a thin CF rod from bottom of stab to base of stab at boom. Used kevlar threads to tack it into place. This was specially important since I wanted to fly it for HL Golf. Has held up well, except for that tree and wing LE is another story. ooops :-) Steve At 12:00 AM 5/1/2002 -0700, Brian Joder wrote: Hello all, I just flew my new Taboo for the first time a few days ago and now having several (GREAT) flights I am starting to use the discus throwing method with the wing peg. SECOND QUESTION: The rudder on these DLG's sticks down (for good structural reasons - understandably) is there any reason I couldn't CA glue a monofilament line from the base of the rudder to say half way up the boom? I think this would help the rudder hop over any ground based obsticals upon those ocassions where you do not catch it. I just feel that the rudder is just waiting to get ripped off of the boom! Re: [RCSE] More Ninja questions:
I have a standard old Futaba 4 channel radio. Its going into my Ninja. I haven't decided whether or not to run a rudder, but I'm leaning towards it. I like rudder control :-) The rudder's useful for tight, slow turns and for aerobatics. Put it in. You can always not use it but if you don't put it in you'll never know.. My real debate is whether or not to go buy a cheap in-line elevon mixer and mix the throttle with ailerons, Not worth the effort. The airfoil's the wrong shape and they're not big enough to make good flaps. You can slow the plane down by bringing up to the slope, turning into wind and effectively hovering it onto the ground. If you can figure out how to run one servo per aileron -- maybe two servos side by side instead of the original single, maybe servos in the wing if you think you've got the room -- then that's the way to go. You'll need a computer radio but they're cheap and the result will be anything you want to try programming. (Differential aileron action is useful on these sorts of planes because you can control yaw without using the rudder and you'll get flaperons at the touch of a switch.) If you're going to be landing on rocks leave the plane on the shelf and get a foam wing. The Ninja is too nice a plane to wreck. Also I'm nearly done with it, I just gotta get the ailerons beveled (any suggestions? I have never done this correctly), the wing/fuse final sanded, the tail feathers put on, the radio installed, and get it covered. I'm building it 'here and there' so it is taking some time but I'm getting there! Get a piece of 2x2 that's a foot long or so and glue sandpaper on it. Clamp to the bench and rub the aileron stock on it -- slowly, evenly and keeping it straight. Your fuse will break just back of the rear bulkhead when you land it and the wingtip pivots the wing on the font mounting pin. Save the trouble of repair by fixing it now. I use filament tape wrapped around the fuse in this area but glass might be a more elegant way of doing it. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News.
