[RCSE] [RCSD] The Park Flyer Menace
I have to agree with Don Stackhouse--the answer is not to ban park flyers, but to bring those folks into our clubs. We used the safety and interference argument here in Columbus to get the City to allow us to fly electrics at our sailplane field. (We had previously been banned from flying anything other than pure gliders at the city-owned site.) We announced the new permission to fly electrics every way we could--to other clubs, at fliers posted at all the hobby shops, etc. The result has been a lot of new members in the club, and a lot of new and interesting planes being flown at the MOSS field. So far, it has not interfered with sailplane operations (although I am still looking for that second half hour flight for LSF III.) RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] The Park Flyer Menace
I'd like to suggest that it would be nice to keep park fliers on 27Mhz and 49Mhz. This should not be pursued through the FCC! But rather as a gentlemen's agreement in the industry. I only wish I had a clue how to go about doing it. Bill Swingle Janesville, CA [EMAIL PROTECTED] RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] New -BLACK- plane unveiled:Radical
I thought the outermost portions of the wing(?) looked like they had a movable trailing edge - they seem to face away from the body at 45 degrees, but they look sort of like elevons to me anyone else see that? B phantom works is also pushing the flexible wing, and I've seen a paper talking about a 3 position wing (loiter, cruise, something else) - I wish I were back in the desert, would love to see this thing ; ) I wonder exactly where the control sufaces are RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Shot down... not sure
Just found out my Futaba rx that crashed in my Sapphire at Visalia had a damaged ceramic crystal filter. Can't know if it was due to the crash or caused the crash. Regardless, praise to Larry and CVRC for addressing the concerns of shoot downs. Knowing how abrupt TD landings are I think I'll be sending in my rx's yearly for a physical. I'll also do some additional shock isolation for the rx. Cheap peace of mind. Kudos go out to Hobby Services (Futaba's repair center). They received my rx on Friday, repaired it and shipped it back Monday. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Re: Shot down personally
Hi Ray, Some good points you bring up. Clubs puting on contests should warn the entrants about where to fly or not to fly. Eg. across freeways or busy streets, busy parks with lots of people there. Common sense should dictate this but some people don't think about these things. The landings shouldn't be over these same areas as you are coming in lower and any problems could put you down where you don't want to be. Land down wind or cross wind if you must do so to be safe. Regards, Art Ray Hayes. Web Site http://www.skybench.com wrote: I wonder if the AMA members have thought about criminal action being brought on the rc pilot and activity sponsor (CD, and club members) that put on an event that requires the sailplanes to fly adjacent to a very busy street inside the city limits and the landing tape set up that requires/allows the pilots to fly over the street, if the pilot would injure or kill someone in a passing car ? The event could be caused by pilot error, interference at the worst time possibly from another participating pilot, park flyers, or wind/flying conditions. I see little legal defense for these people and AMA or personal liability insurance is not a factor that will keep us out of jail or worse. Is this a valid concern for all ? Anyone have an opinion or knowledge of this scenario ? The issue of park flyers is real and Simon is right, it is only a matter of time until rc activity hits the press and in my opinion, the courts. Ray - Original Message - From: Simon Van Leeuwen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, October 19, 2002 11:41 PM Subject: Re: [RCSE] Re: Shot down personally From the RX's point of view, it will always respond to the strongest (dB-wise) on-channel signal, it's that simple. This presents a very real threat to any aircraft, park flyer, moldie, 40-50% aerobat, or otherwise. Unfortunately, it is only a matter of time before an aircraft flying at a sanctioned location causes public damage or injury, or a death. At this point, our hobby/sport will come under public scrutiny. What will be the end result if your AMA's or our MAAC's insurance carriers realize that ultimately those who fly at sanctioned flying sites have zero control over off-site frequency conflicts? What if some neophyte flying his park flyer decides to litigate because of a sustained injury when their park flyer nails them as a result of frequency interference from the local flying field? I think it is very wrong and irresponsible to market and sell park flyer-type aircraft with TX's that operate on the alotted frequencies, especially at the same O/P power. Although educating those who wish to purchase park flyer equipment about the necessity of frequency control, it is rarely driven home. The hobby shop should be doing this, but the actual sale takes precedence. I doubt it is even mentioned, let alone made abundandly clear. The majority of those who would buy these extremely convenient forms of entertainment would think twice about random operation outside of a sanctioned flying site if they could be found liable. However, this is the furthest thought from their minds, because pointing it out would deter the sale in the first place! The problem of off-site interference is not new. What is new is the profuse availability of ready-made radio control aircraft that are operating on the allotted frequencies, that can be easily flown by neophytes where ever the hell they choose. I hope I am wrong about this, but after attempting to (with diplomacy) point out to a father-son team who were flying a park flyer well within range of a local flying field and being told to butt out - it's none of my business, this problem is not going to get better. I power up my LLM model aircraft frequency scanner every time I fly, but this will only save the day before I fly, not during. Ray Hayes. While flying with a buddy at a local high school, you already know this invites folks who have never heard of an AMA membership even though they bought their stuff from the local hobby shop or mail order, my buddy was flying his power plane and said to me watch this, see that kid getting ready to take off, he is on my frequency. The observation I made was: the kid had complete control until my buddies TX was closer than the kid's to the kid's RX in his plane. The pilots were 100 feet apart, my buddy was up wind, so the kid flew into our area on take off. My buddy's TX was in-between the kid and the plane my buddy was flying and had no control problems. I have seen this on a few other occasions and so the question is, has anyone else seen this happen and does this make the interference issue two fold,
Re: [RCSE] Getting Hit
Hi Perry, Simon responded to you very well. there are some other things that can cause problems with your receiver such as a bad crystal. This can happen from a hard landing. The plane may look OK and fly Ok but the crystal may stop ocillating and cause a crash as these crystals are fragil. Also flying near high voltage power lines can cause noise which will swamp your receiver with noise so your receiver can't hear the desired signal. power poles in the area with transformers can be a source of noise if not properly grounded. Drive around intersections with power lines over them while listening to your AM radio and you will hear what I mean. Thermals, Art Perry Hudson wrote: Ok, Sitting here on the couch doing some testing my Jr PCM channel 32 will no hit my Jr PPM channel 32 sitting right next to each other. My Futaba PPM will not hit my Jr PPM channel 20 sitting right next to each other . I guess it's the neg pos shift thing? My buddy has a Stylus I think that will talk to either pos or neg ,ppm or pcm receivers without re programming the radio. If this is correct it injects a whole set of numbers into the shot down analysis spread sheet to calculate the odds. 50 frequencies 8 I think on 6 meters PPM PCM Negative Shift Positive Shift So, in order to get shot down, some one would have to be on your channel, with your shift, in your mode PPM,PCM. Or have a Stylus on your channel. Is this right or am I in left field. Regards,Perry RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] shot down
Here in the uk, we have a couple of suppliers of frequency monitors www.smservices.net , look under test units www.mainlink.demon.co.uk www.micronradiocontrol.fsnet.co.uk , this is where I got my unit from a few years ago, but I couldn't see it on their webpage. These units are only useful to check that YOU don't turn on and shoot somebody else down. They won't prevent somebody else shooting you down Bill Scott Oban Scotland RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Well, because I rather build the things that I know work! I will be selling COMPLETE Ready to WIN glider set up!!! I will have too much time during the off season so I will build and program complete set-ups!!! You just charge the TX and Rx pack and go WIN!!! I'm putting together some COMPLETE packages with Transmitters, I do all the hard work and you just show up to take home the hardware. I will build some Sharons, Compulsions, Fusions, Addictions, and what ever else I feel like putting together. You just pay for the equipment, my time and efforts (of course!!). Let me know if any of you are interested in going this route for your next glider. If not, I'll just add these to my collection... Thanks for your time, Edgar The Soaring Junkie __ Do you Yahoo!? Y!
