Yup, we do it every year at the SOAR club turkey shoot. It
basically does
what you would expect, one of the top guys puts on a spectacular
performance to win the thing beyond all odds, and it allows some
other
pilots to taste wood during the thanksgiving holidays.

Don Smith came up with the following handicap system that we have
been
 using for years:
(we may have had a handicapped landing system too, but this is like
taxes
for me and I had my scoring advisor calculate my task times for me
before
 flying... I just fly.) 8-)

 -8-

Round 1: 6 minutes for everyone

Round 2: 6 minutes + an equipment factor (f) calculated as follows,
 1 +

Class : -.4 HLG hand launched
 -.2 1.5 M - 2 meter span
 0 between 2 and 3 meters
 +.2 greater than 3 meters

 Construction
 -.2 built up sticks
 0 wood sheeted foam
 +.2 bagged composite
 +.4 molded
 Control surfaces
 -.2 2 function
 0 3 function
 +.2 full house ( 3 function)

example composite Phasor 2M would have a factor of (1-.2+.2+.2) =
1.2
resulting in a task time of 7.2 minutes (7 min. 12 sec.) and a
Stork would
 draw a factor of (1+ .2 + .4 + .2) = 1.8, the task would be 10.8
minutes. (The
task being calculated by multiplying the round 1 task by the factor)

Round 3: add to the factor for round 2 the following single highest
 applicable factor:

 -.3 no previous contest flying
 0 for club contests
 +.3 Out of State competitions
+.5 Competing at a National Champs
+.8 Competing in an international comp or Visalia
 +.8 winning a Nats Champ
 + 1.5 for winning a World Champs

example: the unfortunate Nats champ pilot of a Stork would add
their round 2
factor of 1.8 and .8 for a total factor of 2.6. Multiplying by 6
mins. would
result in a task of 15.6 minutes for round 3.

Re: [RCSE] Sharon pro flap question

2002-12-05 Thread James Porter Jr
Any one have experence getting 80 to 90 degrees of travel one one of these
things? I can get enought travel but the flap hinge is so stiff I'm
stalling a 60 inch oz torque servo at about 45 degrees.

I've run into this problem with one or two planes when I thought I REALLY
needed 80 or 90 degrees of flap. Actually 60 or 70 is generally enough
unless you want to stop before you can think about it. Ocasionally the
hinge line has not been scored deep enough or wide enough to make the hinge
flexible enough for large angles - or there is still too much epoxy left in
the fabric to allow the hinge to flex easily.

With the wing well supported upside down on a foam pad flex the flap towards
you using both hands equally spaced on the flap. SLOWLY flex the flap until
it goes slightly past the position you are looking for. You may want to
approach this in stages. Once you've reached the desired point, flex the
flap up and down many times. Finally, tape the flap to hold it there
overnight. While you're doing this listen to the wing for bad sounds - STOP
immediately if you start hearing strange noises. You might, with good
hearing, be able to hear the epoxy flaking off the hinge material - that's
ALL you should hear. Also, as you approach the point where the hinge
becomes stiff, look at the area on either side of the hinge line for
distortion or deviation from a flat appearance - STOP if things start to
look wrong.

Hope this helps.

Re: [RCSE] Re: Dihedral VS Poly VS Ailerons

2002-12-05 Thread John Erickson
Don,

I'd appreciate it if you would elaborate on your statement. I understand
what you are saying in theory, but I've had very different results in actual
practice. I've experimented with two identical planes, one at 9.25 oz and
the other at 11 oz.

In both launch and upwind penetration the heavier plane had better
performance.

If F=ma and the m is increased, the F has to go up. The increase in F must
be greater than the induced drag component.

As far as upwind performance, the speed of the glide is increased.

Your reason for this is that the lighter plane is not aerodynamically
optimized for its weight?

 So Don,

How light is light in a R-E discus launch H/L? My XP3 weighs in at 9.25 oz,
 too heavy?

Yes. The DLG experiments Joe and I were working on before we discontinued
our composite models for business (NOT engineering) reasons verified this.

If the planes aerodynamics are properly matched to its weight, there is no
launch height penalty or penetration penalty to being lighter.

Re: [RCSE] Hitec HS-5125MG Servos

2002-12-05 Thread Art Mcnamee
Hi Sam,
The servos may not be the problem. If these were stripped on landing with flaps down
then learn to take the flaps off a second before you touch down. If there is grass on
the field and the flaps drag across that it's a real load on the gears.
One way to help on that is to buy servo arms from elect. car hobby shops. These servo
arms are spring loaded and really take an impact. I have never broken a servo gear
using these arms.

Sam Girardi is certainly right about what he is saying. However, I have
found (see, message 103906 ) that the new Volzes are sufficiently strong to
survive the occasional flap-down landing without servo protectors. Steve
