RE: [RCSE] Hitec 225 strikes again I WAS LUCKY

2003-02-18 Thread Howard Mark
I've used HiTech servos for years in lots of airplanes - both powered and
sailplanes. I've never had a systemic failure of HS225 or HS85 servos. I
would not consider them inferior to a comparable JR or airtronics servo.
I did replace two HS85's in an Escape once when I blew out both aileron
servo gears in a super hard F3J launch! I replaced them with JR368's (thanks
Mike!) and never had a problem again. I should not have had the HS85's in
there to begin with - the problem was caused by flutter of the surface - any
plastic geared servo would have failed. I have HS85's in my Zenith as it
does not get launched nearly as hard. The only problem I've had with the
Zenith is stripping the Airtronics 141 flap servo gears. The flap servos are
old, but they were free. I had to smile reading Gordy's post on smokin'
motors. The last flap servo I fixed had a lot of crap in the servo and the
motor. Yes - I cleaned it up rather than replace the servo (even pulled the
motor apart and cleaned the commutator!). It did last thru the SWC. I'll
replace the 141's with HS85MG's or HS225MG's and not think twice.

OH BTW - I think the SWC finish/opinion/authority metric is GREAT!
I finished 11th at the SWC, so that makes my opinion very near the top :-)
Maybe if I had better servos, I could beat Fred (Sage)!
Now if the other Fred is listening, I'm ready to sign that big sponsorship
deal.

Mark

Re: [RCSE] Hitec servos - should I use them ?

2003-02-18 Thread Brett Jaffee
It's mainly been about the 225. I have a a whole bunch of Hitec 80'2. 81's and 85's
and havent had a problem with them. In fact, I've had some HS-85's in my primary DS
plane for 2 years without a problem. The JR servos in that same airplane have got all
jittery while the Hitec's remain solid.

FWIW, I've had a couple Futaba servos (S133's) fail too.

This is not the first time I see reports about the questionable
reliability of Hitec servos in open forums and I have to say I am
getting a bit scared. I have two Hitec 125MG wing servos in my 60
moldy and two brand new 81MGs waiting for my new gliders and I am not
sure whether I should have them replaced and tossed before they take
 their toll.

I do not remember coming across any negative comments about other
brands of servos such as Futaba / JR. Is it because they are really
good or just that they are not as popular as Hitec in the US
 modelling community ?

2003-02-18 Thread Brett Jaffee
Someone told me that GWS still sells the servo that Cirrus labeled as the CS-21.
Personally, I'm not sure I trust them on anything but a slow flying airplane.

23 oz/in compared to 17 oz/in of the JR241, and they are smaller, too.
Does anyone still have some in stock?

I'll vouch for that. I had two Cirrus CS-21's controlling the v-tail of
 my
Mini Acacia. Had them in there for about a year. Then, one time, while
DS'ing, I just couldn't get the thing in the grove. I went back the the

bumpy conditions. I landed just in case and discovered that one the
 v-tail
servos had completely failed. It was completely dead. Lucky for me it
froze in neutral. The only effect was that the plane was pulling to one
  side when elevator was applied.

I've since replaced both servos with JR241's (which cost around the same,
  btw).

Re: [RCSE] Hitec 225 strikes again Lessons/Solutions...

2003-02-18 Thread Lee Estingoy
OK, a few questions to direct the conversation a bit.

1. How do we detect defective gear, such as servos, before we trust our
expensive toys to them? Would it help to get a servo driver and burn them
in by cycling them for some set period ?- this will prove the initial
durability of the electronics and motor/brushes, but it won't do much for
the gear sets

2. Do we need to evaluate the sanity of tossing such expensive equipment
into the air knowing that there are any number of possible weak links in the
system, including but not limited to,
every solder joint on every wire, servo amp, receiver, battery pack and
transmitter
every gear in every servo
every pin in every servo

frequency safety - ie, is some bozo with a parkflyer in the parking lot
down the road flying on my frequency?
or, is some nationally known TOC guru who definitely knows better flying
without a pin. IT ALL HAPPENS.

Maybe we need to stop trying to spend more money for more reliability,
leading to an ever more expensive hobby, leading to an ever more devastating
financial loss when the plane does crash. I recently lost my 1/3 scale Duo
Discus in a very public crash in St. Louis. I fluttered the elevator. I
was flying too fast. I also had a JR 8411 (that's a $100.00 servo, friends)
driving that elevator. The flutter caused the gears to slip in that servo.
Seems that there is a history of that servo failing under vibration loads,
such as my fluttering elevator or large helis

I built that plane from scratch. Total materials cost maybe $200.00. It has
become an organ donor; most of the radio gear has been serviced for small
expense. Lots of lessons learned for that 200.00 An acceptable loss. Now,
what if I had paid 3,500 for that ship? Different story. I believe it
would start with my having to look for a new home as my wife would have

RC aircraft go in harm's way. Maybe instead of building them more
expensively in hopes of achieving some failsafe status, we ought to build
them more affordably, such that the INEVITABLE loss of the plane won't be as
traumatic. Think of the other advantages.

Time to get back to building the second Duo. Hmm, what servos should I use?

I hope this doesn't turn into a complete Hitec bashing thread. The bottom
line is that Hitec servos DO offer a good value for their cost. As Fred
put
it, they allow exposure to our hobby (exposure... isn't that something we
were just discussing??), and save us valuable dollars. I run Hitec servos
in all but two of my sailplanes, and have never had an issue with any of
them (I don't run 225s though). I chose brands of higher quality and
greater reliability to run in my contest planes. To me, this only makes
sense. Would you put Costco tires on your Porsche then take it out to the
track? Costco carries decent tires, but nothing I'd put on a Porsche.

I trust what Jack has said about the 225s; he isn't the kind of guy that
would make something like that up and it has also been previously
discussed
on the exchange. That specific type of failure, and failure rate isn't
what
I'd call acceptable. One exchange member made the comment that if even
one product suffers repeated failures like this, then the entire product
line won't be trusted by the masses. I agree with this and hope that
Hitec
will do something about this specific issue, and quickly. Given their
customer service track record (that we ALL have either heard of, or had
personal experience with), I would like to think they will.

I think the moral of the story is simple: don't use the 225s ;)
ESPECIALLY
don't use them in a $1000 glass slipper.

[RCSE] Blonde 225 Servo joke

2003-02-18 Thread Stan Koch
The first Blonde GUY SERVO joke ... and well worth the wait??

An Irishman, a Mexican and a blonde guy were doing construction work on
scaffolding on the 20th floor of a building. They were eating lunch and
the Irishman said, Another 'HiTec 225 Failed! If I get another
225 failure I'm going to jump off this building.

The Mexican opened his lunch and answered, Another HiTec 225 failed! If I
Get another 225 failure I'm going to jump off, too.

The blonde opened his lunch and said, Another 225 failed. If I get another
225
failure, I'm jumping too.

The next day as the Irishman opened his lunch box
 and jumped to his death.

The Mexican opened his lunch, and jumped too.

The blonde guy opened his lunch, and jumped to his death
as well.

At the funeral the Irishman's wife was weeping. She said, If I'd known
He really wanted a different servo I would have bought him one.

The Mexican's wife also wept and said, I could have given him a JR or FMA
I didn't realize he hated 225's so much.

Everyone turned and stared at the blonde's wife.

Are you ready for it

Here it comes

Hey, don't look at me, she said, He buys his own servos.

[RCSE] HS 225 Sudden Death Syndrome

2003-02-18 Thread solutionxl4 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I recently posted my own experiences with HS 225MG servos. I suffered
the failure of four of these servos in the space of a month. The
first was a flap servo on my Hera that failed in flight. (This had
been in the plane about 2 years.)

The other three were on the rudder and elevator of my wife's Chicago
Style RES plane. These were brand new servos in a brand new airplane.
The rudder servo failed first. My wife had just landed her plane. I
noticed the rudder seemed to have been responding a little strangely
as she came in to land. I asked her to wiggle the sticks on her TX.
The rudder wagged twice, then twitched and died. The next week we
showed up at the field and switched on the plane only to find the
elevator servo was dead. A week later, the new HS225MG that I
replaced on the rudder died again.

The fact that the Glider King site has a conversation thread
entitled HS 225MG sudden Death Syndrome is telling. I don't recall
ever seeing a similar thread anywhere on any other manufacturer's
servo.

Whatever I buy, I will be learning on without any instruction,

T-HAWK RTF 3-ch electric powered glider.
http://www.readytoflyfun.com/thawk3chrtf.html I guarantee it will
be forgiving and enjoyable and affordable. There
are now many 3ch electric powered gliders now available that will
meet your needs but none more forgiving and
enjoyable and
affordable. It's a good (and a lot less frustrating) place to
start. Also note, you can get affordable replacement parts when you
need them (and you will). Experts on this list will tell you to get
the most expensive stuff you can afford – but if they are honest,
most will admit to owning more than one radio system. Regis PS.
Wish these were avalable when I was learning.

  Important to note, the 'gears'
didn't break it was that group of pins.

Call it what you want. The part that broke on both in my
wing-maxx servos was a tooth on the large gear of the output
shaft. I would concider that a gear break. The red servos have
the brittle idler shafts. Aside from a few NIB problems (which
were promptly corrected) and the two gears incidents the blues
have woked very well.
