[RCSE] Winch line tension

2004-10-15 Thread Andrew Famiglietti
For those who know a lot more than me I have a question.

Under ideal circumstances what is the best line tension one should use
to launch a sailplane? That is, is there a formula I can employ to
calculate line tension needed to launch a sailplane knowing such things
as its mass, wing span, wing loading, method of construction (built up,
composite, hollow) and any other parameters such as type of line
(stretch , non stretch, twisted or braided, monofilament ) etc.

The reason I ask is because I have just finished building a winch in
which I can adjust the output tension in the line without having to
pulse the foot switch. Line tension can be changed easily and quickly to
accomodate various planes.

TIA
 Andrew

I used to fly at a dam by Wright Patt AFB, and the procedure here is the
Feds would clear that park out before AF-1 / the President would come
in.

Flying definitely would be stopped, but the whole park / dam would be
cleared before a landing.

Honestly, I can't blame anyone for that - If the winds are good, I can
feel salty about it, but I really can't blame them for security
concerns.

[RCSE] Practice F3f at Los Banos the 4th Sunday

2004-10-15 Thread Jacobson

After seeing my name at the bottom of the results
again, I can clearly see that flying in 2+ events a year is not
enough. One step forward would be to have a practice day that does not
interfere with the 2nd sunday Norcal f3f, or the 3rd sunday foamy MOM
races. This is the proposal, on the 4th Sunday of the month several of
the central cal fliers meet up at banos and practice, we would setup some
crude turn markers, use whistles for turn indicators, and a stop watch
for time. This setup will not be an exact, but it will show progress
or lack of progress. It would be best if every body brought their own
whistles, otherwise you would be sharing saliva with who knows. I want
to keep this very simple in equip and attitude. I beleave F3f took off
origanaly because of its simplicity, no detailed rules.Above I did
say Central cal fliers but of course everybody is invited to practice and
get better. SO if you are tired of keeping me company at the bottom of
the results sheet or just need practice landing your plane while you knees
are shaking, the 4th sunday is for you.If interested please e-mail

[RCSE] Release Wax?

2004-10-15 Thread RegDave

I know this went around a while ago but I've lost the files.

I'm looking forsuggestions for a release wax for vac bagging and/or
molding. Out here in the boonies it takes a while to get the real stuff and my
last tub went dry before I could use it up.

I recall suggestions for Mother's or Meguiar's paste wax with carnauba.
Both versions at the local O'Reilly's have a cleaning compound. Is that OK? I
should know by tomorrow when I pop open this bag but I'm still curious about any
comments.

Tried the liquid Meguiar's with carnauba (no cleaning compound) and it
didn't work too well.

That's about what we have locally.

Dr. Zog didn't make it this far inland.
We don't have PVA in the local weed 'n feed.

Re: [RCSE] Practice F3f at Los Banos the 4th Sunday

2004-10-15 Thread Marta Zavala

How about having practice days on a Saturday? As
a matter of fact, I never understood why more contests arent held on
Saturdays. I know the SVSS club has most of their monthly stuff on
Saturdays, and it seems to work good for them. I personally am not totally
obsessed by RC glider flying. I like it but also like other stuff like
watching a football game now and then, etc. For me, Sundays are also kind of
a "sleep in" read the newspaper day(yes, I know you can read the news, sports,
etc on the net, butI just like theexperience of an old fashioned
newspaper). Also, its kind of a drag to have to come home late Sunday from
a contest knowing the next day is MONDAY! Lets say you do well at a
contest/practice Saturday, you have all day Sunday to "bask in the glow" of your
achievement. Going in to work, being hammerred by all the usual Monday
morning work associated"stuff" kinda ruins your
high.
 Ispenta decent amount of money,
boughtseveral F3F ships, a Acacia3, a Wizard Compact, and a carbon
Trinity.I even was and still may buy my ownF3f timing set up
from the UK to have available at a moments notice - in case the wind looked good
somewhere on a non event weekend. I tried attending several F3F races this past
year only for them to be no flies due to poor wind conditions. Eventually,
I kinda gave up on it. I sold the Wiz, but still have the other two racers
and would still like to someday try a F3F event, practice or
otherwise. Keep me posted.
Thanks, Walter

RE: [RCSE] Release Wax?

2004-10-15 Thread Phil Barnes

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm looking for suggestions for a release wax for vac bagging and/or
molding. Out here in the boonies it takes a while to get the real stuff
and my last tub went dry before I could use it up.

For Vac bagging I just use carnauba paste wax from the auto parts store. I
used to use Meguiar's Mirror Glaze #26. When that brand became suddenly
unavailable in my local stores I just grabbed a can of Mothers California
Gold. Both of these are just yellow carnauba paste wax in a can. They do
not mention cleaning compounds on the label.

The only reason I can think of for using something more exoctic than
carnauba wax for Vac bagging is if you want to have an easier time painting
the mylars. If you use carnauba wax on the mylars then you will also have to
use a very specific and carefull technique when you paint the mylars to
avoid fisheyes (in the paint). If you use Dolphin wax;
http://www.superminnow.com/hmracing/racing/about.html
you can use a more careless painting technique and even use slower drying
(slower than Krylon) paint without fisheye problems. The down side of
Dolphin wax is that it is a nuisance to get, is more expensive, is harder to
buff if you let it try too much and will dry up if you don't keep it in a
good airtight container.

To buy Dolphin wax, go to the link above. You won't find it listed on that
site but must email Harold and ask for it.

Phil

Yes. You do this by holding both transmitters and switching back and
forth between transmitters and making adjustments until nothing
changes when you switch.

| do they both need all the same mixing set up (eg, elevon, etc)?

Yes, unless you've got a high end `master' radio which can decode the
slave signal then apply it's mixes to it. The Futaba 9C can do it,
and I don't think many other radios can (but I can't be sure.)

If your radio isn't one that can do this, you just need to make sure
that the controls do the same things on both radios.

| Is it considered safer to pull the crystal from the trainer box?

Yes, though that's not really needed. I don't know about Hitec, but
with Futaba you generally don't even turn the buddy box on. If you do
have to turn the buddy box on, I'd suggest removing the crystal or
module just to be safe, though they should turn off the transmitter on
their own.

Just make sure that the controls are the same for master and slave
before you fly :)

On Airtronics radios, the trainer cord only allows the slave radio's sticks to operate the airplane - all trim and mixes remain in the master, and cannot be adjusted from the slave. The slave is not turned on.

They do, but I believe they do a burn that's just long enough to get
their orbit to decay so that they start dropping into to the

I suppose in theory you could do a burn long enough to drop out of orbit

assume it's not practical).

[RCSE] A critical note on trainer cord use...

2004-10-15 Thread Scobie Puchtler
One critical note on teaching technique when using a trainer cord:

If effective learning is the goal, it's VITAL that the teacher always use
consistent verbal cues when giving control to the student, but even MORE
importantly when TAKING BACK control from the student. As the teacher, if
you're trying to let the student fly to their limit, this can be hard to
remember to do, since you'll tend to concentrate on taking over just in time
to fly the rescue. But especially when 'flying the rescue' you must give a
clear verbal cue that is timed exactly with your moment of takeover.

WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT?
Because for the student there is essentially NO other indication that you
have taken over control. They may continue to move the stick and think they
are getting the results that in fact you are getting for them.

This perception: thinking they were in control when they weren't is
corrosive to the learning process. The student can too easily perceive that
they have flown a brilliant save, only LATER to find out that it was you
doing the saving and not them.

This leaves the student with the task of trying to de-program what they
thought was a success. When exactly did you take over? Did they fly part of
the save, but not the end of it? would the moves they made even have been
helpful? Who knows?. MUCH easier if they just get a clear cue at the moment
that their own stick motions 'no longer count'.

Anything that you both agree on is fine, and saying anything is better than
nothing. but the clearest and quickest words the instructor might use are
probably:

YOURS! when giving control over to the student
and
MINE! at the exact moment of taking control back

If you're like me, you'll find it's a non trivial task as a teacher to be
completely consistent with this, but it's very important to try.

Hope this is helpful.

Lift,
Scobie at Liftworx
www.liftworx.com

PS: The necessity for this rather fussy discipline in using a trainer cord
could be completely eliminated if the manufacturer would simply couple a
BEEP sound to the pressing and releasing of the trainer button/switch. Are
there any brands that have figured this out? I'm sure a good electrics guy
could probably add that in. A little beyond me, but I'm going to consider
asking someone to do it for me. I do a lot of two-box training.

Can anyone give me the quick idiot's guide to using a trainer cord? Do you

up (eg, elevon, etc)? Is it considered safer to pull the crystal from the

[RCSE] AF1

2004-10-15 Thread Denoferth
I am truly amazed how easily you boys are willing to surrender your freedom
in the name of security. What possible security are we talking about. Can
your toy do any damage to his plane? Can you even reach it? Are you in his
flight path or even within miles of it? Can you carry anything as a payload worth
the effort to be reasonably able to pose a threat? Is anything and every
thing some nitwit in Washington dreams up now a threat to real aircraft? (I had a
conversation with a buffoon from the FAA who flew model planes as a child and
understood just how dangerous they were. That was his rational for closing a
field that had been used for years for model flying).

There comes a time when you have to pull your head out and just say enough
is enough, this is just too stupid to put up with anymore. There are millions
of Moslems out there that hate and detest infidels and nobody will ever be
100% safe from them all. Yes, I know not all Moslems are terrorists but it
seems a pretty good bet that nearly all the latest crop of terrorists have been
Moslems. It's a pretty sure bet that we can't stop them all and that they have
also been here all along so isn't it time to just face reality and concede a
little danger is inevitable? We have to be smarter than them not dumber. Smart
precautions not stupid ones need to be implemented. We have to trust each other
a little more and be willing to accept responsibility and not just dumbly
hand it over to unqualified people just because they are in positions of
authority.

Now that the secret service has decided to ask nicely for you to stop
playing with your plastic toy plane instead of shooting you down it's all OK is it?
For the record, there is no such thing as asking nicely! The implied power
and oppression of the government is behind them. Refuse and they will carry it
to whatever end they can justify. These tactics can be implemented only when
out of the of public scrutiny. Most cannot stand the light of day. Publicize
them and they melt away. Ridicule is a powerful tool when applied selectively,
and I mean by name, down to the local level. Any reasonably intelligent person
should be able to assess the threat level of a model plane as opposed to a
missile and take the appropriate action. Each time they get away with it another
precedent is set and more freedom is eroded away.

On a certain level I could almost understand the hysteria when they closed
the 30 mile circle around Salt Lake City airport during the Olympics. It being
right after 911 and so nearly everyone went along with it but it set the
precedent. Now, little by little, we are handing the security types our freedom. Is
it because of some misguided sense of duty or is it just plan out and out
fear. I'm sorry, but I cannot sit quietly by and watch it go down the toilet. I
did not spend 24 years of my life protecting this country to see it handed away
by liberal yuppies so afraid to loose their little area of interest that they
are willing to give up mine for what they perceive as security. You eat the
elephant one little bite at a time and you surrender your freedoms the same
way. It worked in Germany, Russia, China, Cuba, England, Australia and every
other country that needed more security than freedom. Can't happen here? You
had better take a look at what homeland security has already cost you.
Motherland and Fatherland were already in use, it seems. Maybe we really are a
Nation of Cowards as the book title suggests. Dennis Karoleski, NH, USA Sorry
about the length but not the content. 8-(

John Diniz is a fun guy and will be a force to reconned with in the soaring

Finally after several years and a few hundred
dollars I won something significant at the infamous Visalia raffle, a JR9303.
I'm a Futaba flier and it is not compatible with anything I own.

Now I know that donors hate to see raffle prizes
show up for sale but I'm going to do something that will benefit our soaring
teams. Here is the deal. The 9303 is the soaring version with the tranny, 770
receiver, 3 DS368 servos, charger, battery, accessories. The cheapest I've seen
this advertised is $575. I'm going to offer it for $550 and I will donate $25 to
the F3B team and $25 to the F3J team. I'll pay the shipping in the

I'm going to be out of town till Sunday night but
will check email in the morning before I leave.

Again, thanks to JR for the generous donations and

small R/C planes are no more of a problem than birds (less -- no residue)
and I just can't see the Secret Service succeeding in grounding birds for
the duration of a Presidential visit.

(Random thought -- I wonder if the Secret Service realize that raptors can
be trained and that some of the places where this sport is very popular
include Iran and Pakistan.)
