Re: [RCSE] Security issues and R/C models

2004-10-19 Thread Denoferth
but the commander of Andrews AFB came to the conclusion that it was better
to have concerned people (eyes and ears) around then not. (Especially now when
are forces have been stretched so thin Andrews AFB has replaced the Air
Police at the gates with civilian contract personnel). Many of the club members
are military or ex-military and have security training. Eliminating the
terrorist threat is unrealistic

I used that same argument at Pease Tradeport but the FAA rep. didn't buy it
because he flew models as a kid and knew how dangerous they were. Besides, the
radios would cause interference and the planes could carry cameras.

If I were interested in taking someone out via RC, I'd use one of the new
jets with a true turbine, and an onboard video camera setup. At 200+ mph, I
think it would be more effective.

Aren't we forgetting someone still must have the skill to put such a model
together and actually pilot it?

Not that I'd ever fly one I prefer aerobatics and soaring to turning big
loops and circles, which is just about ALL their owners do with them.

Sounds suspiciously like the famous argument, to paraphrase; When they came
after the power fliers I wasn't concerned because my sailplane were quit so I
said nothing. Then they came after the combat models but I fly slope so I
didn't protest. But when they banned all flying models it was too late because
there was no one left to help me.

[RCSE] The 25th Annual Great Pumpkin Fly

2004-10-19 Thread AMA3655
Thanks to the Cincinnati club members for a great contest. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The weather was challenging, to say the least. It surprised me that when the contest
was over there were no planes lost or even severely damaged. We got 6 rounds in both
days and all went home with our planes.

I really enjoy the seeded MOM (Is your Mom seedy?) format, I hope that others try it
out. The turkey and trimmings were great - Big Thanks to Joe Dirr.

The wobble cow that I won for not flying very long is one of my cooler trophies. It
wobbles a long time and even squeeks a little - the cat even likes it. Valeta wanted
me to get the pig to go with it, but my flying wasn't consistent enough.

Dick Cheney flew into the Columbus area this
morning. As soon as I heard about it, I repeated my GWS Tiger Moth test
out behind the garage. Once again I lost throttle control at ten
paces with the antenna collapsed and less than 50 paces with full antenna
extension.

I'll try it again in the morning, just
to make sure, but this is a plane I can normally fly out of sight and have often
flown in the neighborhood, including taxiing it in a 4th of July parade that
goes right past the house.

It is clear to me that there is a
Republican conspiracy against Channel 47. At least on the

Rob, I think you're close, but...

I also think Tom's got it wrong. Its not him and Ch47, its all of us. Its
just that occasionally some of us either forget our mediciation or take the
wrong color capsule. If we do that then we might hallucinate a bit, notice
things that don't exist like, for example, that we seem to be in a vat of
goo or that somethings interfering with our radios. Tom'll be all right once
we've got him dosed up correctly, just be tolerant in the meantime.

Nobody's perfect.

[RCSE] The Zoom?

2004-10-19 Thread Mark Williams
OK, I'm no engineer, aerodynamicist or a physicist but the question I would
like to pose to the collective knowledge concerns the zoom after release
from the tow line. If this has been discussed ad nausium previously, please
let me know. I have seen many techniques for this period before the
aircraft slows to normal airspeed. Some pull up into a vertical ascent,
others climb at an angle some where between 45 and 60 degrees and others
just come off the line and let the aircraft climb as if it was not piloted.

I know that many factors apply, total drag of the air frame, the amount of
kinetic energy at release, airfoil lift, ETC. What puzzles me is that my
practical experience would indicate that if the lift vector from the airfoil
is not directed upwards, one is losing the advantage to be gained from the
wing moving through the air. I.E, if the vector is horizontal, the airplane
is not using that force to increase the eventual launch height. This would
tend to suggest that a completely vertical climb out after release is less
than ideal. Flying a Sapphire with Fred Sage CGT wings for the last few
years I tend toward the 45 to 60 degree profile, which seems to work
reasonably well.

What is the ideal profile, or is it totally dependant on the design of the
specific aircraft?

Re: [RCSE] The Zoom?

2004-10-19 Thread James V. Bacus
My suggestion is that you get a LoLo with high resolution sampling and
chart out some of your launches as you try some of these things. Once you
can quantitate it, you can make logical decisions. You will have to
measure multiple launches, you can't just judge it on single attempts. It
takes a little time to do so, but it is worth it.

Of course there is a lot more to launching high before you get to the zoom,
and that can be measured too.

I went out and measured a bunch of my launches, and my best altitude zooms
come from getting a very quick ping from the line and rapidly getting the
model pointed almost vertical and then hands off the sticks (keep the model
clean) until I have just barely enough energy left to push the nose back
over the top.

I still wish I could launch higher, more practice, just like anything
else... 8-)

From Tustin? Let us assume -moving- traffic for the moment. LOL! Less than 25
minutes down the CA 55 freeway to the I405 freeway north. On the I405 north
exit Brookhurst and turn left on Brookhurst (towards the ocean). Go a few
miles to the Hamilton intersection and turn left. Go to Canyon two or three
lights down and turn left. Follow Canyon 2 blocks straight ahead and it dead
ends at Fairview park. Setup and enjoy. There is a frequency control board
there. Please use it. Please be mindful of others, like joggers, in the park
as this is a public park. Everyone has a right to be there. This is a very
historical site as the Harbor Soaring Society flies there every weekend and
some weekdays. HSS is not what it used to be (or so I a newbie understand)
but it is a nice flying site! Enjoy the ocean view. (Ignore the power
plants!) LOL!
