[RCSE] NATS Entry Forms/Schedule

2004-12-07 Thread Tom Kallevang
Yes, this is earlier than we all expected, Lonee Estep is getting off
to quick start. There are a couple of errors on the entry form on the
AMA website. I have requested the changes, but I do have an edited
.pdf version available at:

http://www.silentflight.org/NATS2005/Nats2005.html

Click on the Nats Registration Packet link or wait a day or so and get
a corrected copy from AMA (I'll post the update on the LSF site as
well).

F3B is a typo, it is indeed an F3J year, and we are allowing 4 entries
per frequency in F3J only to spur pilots to fly together as teams. The
entry fee is $35 like the other two day events. There's an extra line
between Sat/Sun and Mon, with a $25 tag ... ignore that, it's a cut and
paste orphan from morphing the form from last year to 2005.

The schedule has shifted to a Friday to Friday week. The Executive
Council mandated a compression of the Nats schedule. They took some
practice days away from some groups, split frequencies among different
R/C events to run concurrently ... Soaring retains its 8 days, just
offset a day earlier. As a result, the schedule was changed only by
shifting HLG to Friday from Monday. This minimal change should allow
us to evaluate how the shift may affect our attendance.

Watch the page above for updates.

[RCSE] Who are Frank, Bob, and Jack

2004-12-07 Thread Chuck Anderson
While cleaning up some old filed on my computer, I ran across this. It was
posted on Compuserve sometime before 1996 when I dropped Compuserve. It
is probably from 1994 since that was the first time we flew at Muncie and
is the only year we flew from the knoll. And it was not the Nats but the
LSF Tournament.

Chuck Anderson
SOARING WITH THE EAGLES
Frank, Bob and Jack, to Muncie did go.
The National were on and they had entered the show.
Two Magics were ready, the epoxy dry,
Poor Jack had a crash, during a last minute fly.
They arrived at the site, and studied the scene.
Their transmitters charged, their reflexes keen.
The two meters were flying and the launches were steep.
Most landings were perfect. The water looked deep.
Next day they rose with the birds and went straight to the field.
Our fellows were ready, if their nerves didn't yield.
The top guns were there, thicker than fleas.
Flying Falcons and Eagles, Saturns and Vees
Our men watched Wurts, Weaver, Agnew and Shaw
Talk about awesome. There should be a law.
Projectilesthey launched as if shot from a gun.
Then they thermalled like hawks, as high as the sun.
Then down from the heavens, they came like a shot.
Deployed their flaps and nailed the spot
Our boys winched up their sailplanes, but their zenith was low.
If the green air was left, to the right they would go.
The lift was elusive, but most landings they made.
Their flights weren't impressive, but their zeal didn't fade.
When the contest was over they posted the score.
Mike Fox was the winner, our guys' dreams were no more.
Would they do it again? Would they challange the best?
Will they hone their skills and go back for the test?
The resonse was a chorus. The answer was, yes.
What is it that drives them, to take up this quest?
To challange the gods. To fly from that knoll.
To dream the impossible. That is their goal.

Re: [RCSE] Optima Battery Charging

2004-12-07 Thread Tom Broeski
When using a desulfating charger, the recommended voltage is 14 volts with
an Optima. Many low amp chargers are not high enough voltage, and others
are too high.
http://www.vdcelectronics.com/batteryminder_12v_optima.htm

We charge and maintain 4 at our field with a solar charger at 14.4 volts
P.S. I will match any price you find on BatteryMinder chargers -- a free
SureGuard also.

You _MUST_ have a charger that never exceeds the max voltage rating
of the Optima (15.1 Volts) or it can vent and then it is trash. Many
chargers will do this, so do some research before buying.
I just checked (it was bugging me). The Optima max voltage is 15.6 V.
Some chargers can hit 16 V, hence the warning.

Re: [RCSE] California Foam -Home Depot?

2004-12-07 Thread George L Meyers
Can anyone tell me what foams are available at the Home Depot's (or equiv.
stores) in your state?
In Fresno, CA, there is a company called Valley Foam that uses foam to
produce various objects such as decorative columns, animals etc. for
commercial purposes. I've been able to get free scrap 1 lb foam pieces
large enough to cut wing cores. I have also bought 2 and 3 pound pieces cut
to my dimensions. They get the foam in 4'x4'x10' blocks. It is mostly
white foam. If you check in you area you might be able to find a similar
company. The price will be higher than Home Depot.

I have a Dodgson Orbiter 2 HLG kit that I won't get around to building. I
acquired it in it's current state, with the wings framed up but no top
sheeting, cap strips or LE's installed. No other building has been done, and
what is done was done nicely. Plans, instructions and all materials minus
tail boom are there.

Make offer!
Thanks for the bandwidth,
Tim Vandenheuvel
