Re: [RCSE] Re: [RCSE ] Is anyone actually building something?

2005-02-06 Thread Thomas Koszuta
Paul,

Keep it moving. Unless yours is much lighter than mine (about 38-40 oz.) it
is not a floater. It has a relatively high aspect ratio and wing load and
without any wing twist it has a pronounced tip stall. It does really scoot
when you need t it to and is really fun on a slope with the ballast tubes
installed.

Don't try to save a flight on a hand launch thermal at 20 feet until you
know where that tip stall starts.

You may want to put an extra wrap of fiberglass at the transition of the fin
to fuse, cuz that is where it will crack the first time you catch a wing tip
on landing. Make sure the flexible pushrod sheaths are well anchored inside
the fuse to prevent contol slop.

Flies nice, just keep it moving. It will take a decent winching - watch the
wing tips when you zoom. Startl easy then work you way to your comfort
point. The tips start flexing from the point where the internal tubes end.

I broke my T-tail when I launched it way too timidly last summer (broke my
confidence late summer). I think I was probably a little nose light, too.

What's your opinion of the T-Bird? Apart from the spoiler/skeg do you
have any recommended tweaks or tips?

I'm planning on flying it as is for the moment, and once I've
accumulated some flying time/experience I'll most likely either try
doing a spoiler retrofit to the existing wing or get the
multi-function wing which has flaps and ailerons. My first foray into
building since my early teens has been a bit of a (re)learning
experience and I'm sure the second set of wings will be a whole lot
 closer to perfect.

Re: [RCSE] copyright infringment info

2005-02-06 Thread TJB
Difference between Patent and Copyright:
A patent is a set of exclusive rights granted by a government to an inventor
or applicant for a limited amount of time (normally 20 years from the filing
date). The term patent originates from the term to patent which means to
lay open (to public inspection) and the term letters patent, which
originally denoted royal decrees granting exclusive rights to certain
individuals or businesses.

Copyright
A copyright provides its holder the right to restrict unauthorized copying
and reproduction of an original expression (i.e. literary work, movie,
music, painting, software, mask work, etc.) It is a legal right (usually
of the author or composer or publisher of a work) to exclusive publication
production, sale, distribution of some work. What is protected by the
copyright is the expression, not the idea. Notice that taking another's
idea is plagiarism, so copyrights are not the equivalent of legal
prohibition of plagiarism.

By law, copyright exists from the time of creation of an original work of
authorship fixed in a tangible medium of expression. Today there is no need
to put a copyright notice to have a copyright. Registration is not required
to bring an action for infringement, but if the copyright was registered
prior to the infringement, certain statutory damages are available which are
not available if the copyright is not registered. It is a matter of good
practice to place a copyright notice which includes the copyright holder and
year of creation (e.g Copyright, JHU, 2001). Changing items, which include
some new work and some work created in prior years can include the multiple
years (Copyright, JHU, 2000, 2002).

Since the Alpina is not a scale model, but an original artistic creation,
I would think it would fall under this category.
However, if there were substantial modifications/improvements and the name
itself was not used, then it would be a different plane altogether.

Producing scale planes is a different matter. Anyone may make their own
version of ASW27 for example.
But to copy an Escape, Emerald, Taboo, etc. to sell in the market place
would be considered an infringement on the original creator's rights.

RE: [RCSE] copyright infringment info

2005-02-06 Thread John Derstine
Well it turns out Ed was not considering ripping off Multiplex, but he,
I think, naively thought Hitec would let him make it here while
multiplex makes it Germany.
Anyway you are partly right, but it all depends on where and how you
make an ASW-27. For example if you own proprietary tooling and someone
makes a new tool from a positive from your molds, that's infringement. I
know of a case where in the Czech republic customs seized molds made
this way by an unscrupulous Dealer.

The slightly altering and renaming goes on all the time with non scale
stuff and why it is useless to try to copyright a fun fly airplane,
reference the Zagi, look at all the look alike forms of that one.
Laws vary in different parts of the world.

[RCSE] 9303 question

2005-02-06 Thread James R MacLean
Some questions about the new JR radio: Is the R700 and /or R770 receiver
of a form factor conducive to the usual 3 meter sailplane fuse
dimensions?

Can the TX be easily converted by the user to Mode one operation? (mode
one is elevator and rudder on the left stick) My present Futaba 8UAX
makes the conversion very simple. I have owned transmitters which were
very difficult to convert.

Can the transmitter operate in a standard FM mode such as would be
compatable with a normal FM receiver? Yes, I know the shift polarity does
not match Futaba and Hitec but on 50 MHz band they are all the same so I
plan on continuing to use my collection of FMA and Futaba receivers. I
may have to reorder the servo connections however.

Many thanks, Jim MacLean Melbourne, FL

Well, since I did not place in the wood it really doesn't matter, but I

Should have entered it in 2M for first place, but I thought it would be fun to

with this wonderful, if not classic, ship and still be competitive. In
typical Justin (JustOn) form I blew the last RES round to take a drop of 4-5

Just thought I'd give myself a pat on the back.

I use one as well. It takes some practice, and an extra set of hands
or clamps to secure the panel while trimming will guarantee a clean
seam. A box of single edge razor blades powers one of these trimmers
seemingly forever. I've covered wood and even foamies using one.

[RCSE] Seattle Area Soaring Society event

2005-02-06 Thread Russ Young
Group,

I posted this to RCSE in case there were any Seattle area folks NOT members
of the Seattle Area Soaring Society that would like to be aware of this
meeting.

Thanks for the bandwidth...

Russ Young

We would like to remind you of this upcoming event.

SASS Club Meeting

Date: Monday, February 7, 2005
Time: 7:00PM - 9:00PM PST (GMT-08:00)

Club meeting, Rose Hill Jr High School, Redmond, WA, anyone is
welcome!

Guest Speaker:
Jeff Johnson, program manager for aerospace projects at VulCan,
Paul Allen's investment company, and former SASS member (before
he got too busy doing really cool stuff) will share his
experience with the SpaceShipOne project, making use of the
extensive archive of video recordings, still photography, and
personal recollections to give a behind the scenes view of this
historic achievement.

SpaceShipOne, a collaboration between Paul Allen and Burt
Rutan's Scaled Composites, recently won the X PRIZE, flying
twice into space within the span of 5 days. This innovative
craft, using only private money, not only marks a great
technical achievement but also the start of a new era in
spaceflight. Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group has
licensed the technology with the intent of creating a fully
operational space tourism business by the end of 2007.

[RCSE] Thanks CASL!

2005-02-06 Thread Daryl Perkins
Thanks to all for a great time! Darwin and crew run an
efficient, yet relaxed contest.

The air was challenging at times, making for a
slightly thermal oriented event. Many of the top ten
fell out in the last 8 minute round, shaking the
scores up a bit. I think Edgar had me prior to the
last round.

Don't ask me who finished where I have no idea. I
flew pretty well though. ;-)

I flew an Insanity 3.7. 2nd place Mike Smith flew a
Sharon 3.7. Hm... starting to see a theme here...
;-)

Thanks to all the hard workers at CASL. I had a great
time. And it was great to see so many old friends.
They make me remember what this soaring thing is
really all about.
