Re: [RCSE] flourescent monokote / ultracoat removal

2005-04-20 Thread Neil Gillies
Hi All
Removing old monokote/solarfilm/ultracoat colo(u)r from balsa is fairly
easy. Using a covering iron, iron some paper kitchen towel down on to
the mess and remove after a few seconds while still warm - the coloured
adhesive comes away easily with the tissue and can be discarded.
Applying any solvents initially just makes the mess a lot harder to
clean. If the kitchen roll doesn't remove it all, then that's the time
to resort to the alcohol rub :-))

Hope this helps
Cheers
Neil
PS Failng that, a very coarse wirebrush fitted to your electric drill
will remove it rapidly :-))

Re: [RCSE] Hobby Horse/Bruce Herider

2005-04-20 Thread hall
About six years ago I placed a large order with them, including a JR 8103 radio.
I asked the wife to ship the immediately available portion of the order early
in a separate shipment. She agreed and assured me there would be no extra
charge.

When the first shipment arrived there was a $5.00 shipping charge on the
invoice.
I telephoned Jim about this and was met with a torrent of vitriol I still can't
believe all these years later. I was a liar, his wife had made no such
assurance, etc. The really strange part of this - at that time, this outfit
had a policy of free shipping for orders over $100.

Hobby Horse? More like the south side of the genuine article!

Several years ago I was shopping for a JR TX Module. Since Hobby Horse was a
 JR
dealer, but didn't have the module listed in their magazine ad, I called on
 their
toll free line to get a price. Could have used e-mail, but I wanted a price
quickly, and didn't want to eat up any savings with long distance phone
 charges.
Instead of getting a price, I received a lecture about how I was not to use
 their
toll free line for anything but ordersthe lecture probably taking almost
 as
much time as it would have to have given me a price. I guess that's their
policy---some dealers invite you to call for price. This experience
 stuck with
me and I never gave them another chance, and probably never will.

Thanks for all the ideas.

I pulled out the monokote iron and a dirty covering sock, and about 15
minutes later all the remaining covering was in little, burnt balls on
the floor. I just kept going back and forth over the covering on fairly
high heat; it would heat up, roll up, and fall off - very slick.

You all saved me hours with an Exacto - very much appreciated.

[RCSE] Fiss Alpine Soaring Event

10 years Flying Circus, the International Gliderfestival in
Fiss/Tirol. (Austria)

RC-pilots from all over the world will come together on July 21. to
24.2005 in Fiss, the pictorial village on the sunny plateau of Tirol,
in order to celebrate the 10-years anniversary. The anniversary of a
meeting, which got world-wide interest like no second alone by the
location. Fiss became a Mekka for the alpine model pilots! On
Europe´s highest model airfield... on 2500 m over sea level! The
mountain is named Schönjöchl, and offers big thermals apart
from a fantastic panorama ... 1000 m over the locality Fiss!
You will see there numerous scale gliders, the world best
manufacturers show their novelties, and everything that has wings will
go to be flown ...
The meeting is open for all, beginners, progressings, and
professionals.
Free flying for all is called the slogan. Beside the flying at the
slope there are numerous actions, which will provide for alternation
and maintenance. Apart from the nocturnal water flight competition for
electrical models in Ladis on the village pond there will happen in
the night a contest at the valley station near the Hexenalm:
The pilots have to master most difficult tasks with their small
electrical models under the rejoicing of the spectators. Only the best
one wins? No, all, who are daring enough to make the fun will win! An
open air concert and fireworks will end the happening this night.

Celebrate with us ! Everyone, who was not ever there, missed
something! Now the opportunity is... make a thick mark in your
calendar, make your vacation reservation, and drive to Fiss : on July

switch that comes with the airplane setup.

I know you said you didn't want to be bothered with switches right now, but

Speed, cruise and thermal.

RE: [RCSE] Can I. . .with the 9303??

2005-04-20 Thread Hank Schorz
The best switch setup is to slightly moddify the radio and move the Elevator
dual rate switch to the right front panel (where the thermal/cruise/speed
switch is located), move the launch/cruise/land switch one place to the
left( where the elev d/r switch was) and rotate it 180 degrees, and move the
thermal/cruise/speed switchh (that you took out in the first step) over to
the remaining hole to (the right of the launch/cruise/land switch). This
will let you operate all of the flight modes with your left thumb. There are
instructions (in pdf format) with many pictures on how to do this at
www.rcsoaring.com under documents and tips - JR9303 Sailplane Switch
Modifications. It taks around 45 minutes, a small soldering iron, and a 6
piece of hookup wire to do the modification.

Guys. . .excuse my simple inquiry, but with all the frustrations I had with
the 8103, I'm reluctant to take the plunge on the 9303. Nevertheless, I must

do something pronto about a brand new Tx and have no time to read extensive
manuals and fuss with elaborate programming.

Would those of you who have the 9303 that has ailerons and elevator on the
right stick and throttle and rudder on the left, please tell me this:

Will it be a simple programming matter to operate the two flaps to full down

on the throttle stick and have elevator compensation? Will the throttle trim

tab then effect both flaps? Can I bypass flipping any switches?

Is it simple to get rudder mixed in with ailerons? Is it easy to program for

Dual Rates on elevator and ailerons?

What kind of running time are you getting on the standard battery pack?

That's all I need to fly the Genie, the LT/S or the Genie Pro. The other
things can come later. I have no time now to deal with them.

have rudder mixed in with ailerons. Question. Will the throttle trim tab
then move both flaps?remain The other stuff can come later.

Would it be a simple and sure programming procedure to do those things???
Also, does the radio allow independent programming for throw and neutrals of

each aileron.of each aileron?

 (1) use the throttle stick to move both flaps to the full down
positioonindependently get each flap to a full down position on the throttle

stick? (2) Would the throttle trim tab be functional to simultaneously
effect up or down movement of both flaps? (2) dial in down elevator
compensation with down flaps?
(3) independently program each aileron for throws and differential? (4) Mix
rudder in with ailerons?

Re: [RCSE] Can I. . .with the 9303??

2005-04-20 Thread Mike Remus
Gentlemen, I have the sailplane version, and as it comes out of the box.
there are two 3 position switches on the top face of the radio Tx. One
is directly above the left stick and the other is directly above the
right stick.
I chose to swap locations of the Left 3 position switch over to the far
left top face where one of the dual rate switches is located. I use the
3 position switch for three different flight modes and don't want to
fumble my fingers around the flap/spoiler stick while looking up at my
glider. It is an easy swap to make. My friend also has a sailplane
version and is OK with switch locations as it comes out of the box. Marc
Gellart has the helicopter version which has a 3 position switch located
on the upper top left corner like a Stylus or Vision.
He says it was easy for him to program to his desired functions. We all
like our JR 9303's very much. Coming from Airtronics radios, I did have
a learning curve to get through, but it's worth learning for me.
I think if you are jumping up from one of the earlier JR Radio versions,
you will be familiar with the programming language and methods. Should
be able to adapt you knowledge easily.
You can't get any better field support then Horizon Hobbies offers. They
have dedicated sailplane flyers employed who travel to many events and
they will bend over backwards to meet your needs. They also support a
number glider events each year. How can it get any better then that??
It's a no brainer. Go with JR and reap all the benefits.

Re: [RCSE] Another Hi-Start Story

2005-04-20 Thread Thomas Koszuta

I had run a stout hi start across a baseball diamond one spring.
After pulling the chute back about 100 yards, I threw the plane. It went
about 50 feet up then came off like there was no tension.

Put the plane on the ground and walked the line, expecting a break
somewhere. Nope. The string had cut into the mud on the baselines
and the mud stopped it cold.

The pretty fluorescent pink string had a big ugly mud stain on it, so I
took it off the rubber and chute and washed it in a "delicates" bag in the
washer. You would not believe how tangled up a piece of string can get
like this. I was laughing at myself as I untangled it thinking about how
much time I was wasting for three bucks worth of twine, but once I started, I
could not let the line beat me. I think the fabric softener adds to the
aerodynamics.

 Hey guys,
Just want to remind you that I'm still build planes fulltime,
or I should say installing gear and getting them RTF.

Mostly T/D planes, but have done alot of slopers, electric sailplanes,
 and some electric pylon racers.

Let me know what you got and I can give you price.
I can send you some pics of my work and referrals.

Turn around time is usually just a day or two.

[RCSE] JR 9303 - Jojo lost his virginity

2005-04-20 Thread Jo Grini

Ok I am not a virgin.. But in JR terms I think I
am.
All my model life I have been playing around with
MPX Tx's (Though my first was a 2ch Sanwa).
I have had Sprint, Combi 80 (still have this one as
trainer), Royal, 2015, 3010, 3030, 4000 and currently own 2 EVO's
THEN I was going to the Nats and needed 72mhz (we
have 35mhz here in Norway) so I spent some bucks on a used crystal EVO and got
GREAT service from Polk that sent me a synth Rx. But I realized I needed
moreTx crystalsand turned to a friend I met at the WC F3J in Canada.
John Diniz at Horizon Hobby ( http://www.horizonhobby.com/)proposed
that I should try the JR 9303 and would send me all I needed. Wow! Now I could
check out what JR feels is the best. And since I know some of the best have used
it I felt confident that I might have a good thing going. You see - there is one
thing I dont compromise on. I do not come to a competition unprepared.

Since I cant use 72mhz on a regular basis here in
Norway I will have to return the stuff but if I feel the 9303 has an advantage
over my EVO I might do the switch. We will see... Anyhow it seems that JR really
takes us sailplane guys serious and do step up for us when needed.

So over to the shiny case I got in the mail today.
It took only 7 days shipping to Norway so I started fidling with the switches
and put it on charge while I surfed thru the airplane manual (seems I have the
"A/S" version. airplane/sailplane). After 1/2 hour and some dinner I had to
start fidling with the on/off switch also so I fidled more and took out a
sailplane from the cellar... I took the worst one out there. At WC the South
African team had got new Graupner MX-22's (same case as 9303) and strugled with
programming. I bought one of the planes (Shongololo a copy of the
SwedishRacemachine)they brought and discovered that it was NOT
properly set up. So here I have a model with servo horn in all strange
directions and a new radio that I have been fidling with for just 20-30min. Well
to make a long story short the model is up and running and the timer says I did
it before the radio had been on for 2 hours. I now have all the setup I need for
F3J with 3 flight phases, camber control on the slider and a countdown
timer on the training button. Even the name on the model is correct
;-O

I have a qualifying competition this weekend so I
dont think I will dare to use it this soon -but hey It sure does work and
also: It seems to do what I need both for sailplane competition and I can fly my
electric planes.

Only thing I need to work out is how to use that
training button to start my electric sailplane motors...

Dont expect me to read ALL the messages on this
list if you have any comments. But as always I try to keep up and enjoy the
reading ;-)

[RCSE] Radio Charging Error-advice please

2005-04-20 Thread Scobie Puchtler
Y'all know I'm no electronics whiz, so I'd appreciate a little advice if any
is necessary:

I just charged both of my JR TX's for several hours using two wall chargers.
One charger was stock JR, the other one I THOUGHT was my other stock JR wall
charger. but I now see that it was actually a Hitec wall charger. The
radio that was on the Hitec charger had zilch, wouldn't come on, LCD display
didn't even flash for a second. Seemed very weird at first, but once I
realized it had been on the wrong charger, things started to make more
sense.

I've now got the uncharged (mis-charged?) radio charging on the JR charger,
as was the original intent.

I seem to remember from my days of wiring various other chargers that the
wall charger polarity on a Hitec and JR chargers might be opposite.

Any reason to expect that I've done any damage to the battery? Anything I
should be doing or checking?

I already put the 'correctly charged' battery in the TX that was on the
Hitec charger and everything works fine.

Thanks in advance for any reassurances (or horrors if warranted) :-)

Hello Scobie,

Yes, the JR charger for the RADIO (only) is REVERSED.

If you pluged in a charger from a different brand
(with reversed polarity) into the radio it will short
out the fuse in the TX. You will have to replace the
fuse.

That's right, they are. The JR charging plug has the negative connection on
the tip and the positive connection on the side.

Any reason to expect that I've done any damage to the battery?

Yes. If you've discharged any or all of the cells and then charged them in
reverse, they're likely to be permanently damaged. If so, after a normal
charge they could appear to be okay but will quickly go dead when used.

Anything I should be doing or checking?

You need to cycle the pack with a smart charger, such as a Triton, and see
how many MAH the pack can now store. If it's significantly less than the
pack's rating, which I believe is 600 MAH, then you'll need to replace the
pack. Alternately, you can just give the pack up for dead and replace it,
just to be safe.

There are differing opinions among the guys here concerning NiCd vs. NiMh
cells, but my own recommendation is to buy two four-packs of Energizer 2300
or 2500 MAH cells from a local department store, cut the wire harness from
your old NiCd pack before recycling it (cut only one wire at a time), and
build a new pack. You can charge it with the same charger you've been using,
but of course it'll take longer because of the increased capacity.

He'd be better off if the fuse had blown, but it sounds to me like the fuse
held, the battery charger reverse-charged his pack, and probably ruined it.

it looked OK. 8 minutes into his first flight with a 33% Edge with a

Batteries are cheap. Spend $30 and get a bigger NiMH and replace the

2005-04-20 Thread Simon Van Leeuwen
If the pack was healthy to start with, you may be fine. This will depend
greatly on pack condition, and just how long you had thme on reverse charge.

You state that you now have the proper charger on the TX in question for
a while now. I suggest checking right away to see whether the TX
actually turns on, this will determine a few things:
- that indeed the TX powers up
- that the pack is retaining a charge (check initial voltage)
- that all cells are showing a minimum V (whatever the indicated voltage
is divided by 8 - should be at least 1.1-2V/cell).

Re: [RCSE] Radio Charging Error-advice please

2005-04-20 Thread George Joy
Scobie,
There is a lot of bogus mation being passed around.
1st, the JR radio's do have reversed polarity, if you had plugged the Hitec
charger into it, it should have blown the fuse.
2nd, reverse charging the Hitec radio with the JR charger could have
damaged the cells beyond repair, the only way to know is to give them a
forming charge ( 18 to 24 hours on the slow charger) Then cycle them 3 to 4
times and check their capacity each time, if they come up to capacity after
the 3rd cycle, then they will be OK, if they don't, replace them and start
over with the forming charge.
3rd, the Hitec radio has a jumper that will not let you DISCHARGE the
pack through the radio jack, any peak detection charger will charge them
ok, but won't let you cycle them until you jump the diode. ( Check my web
site for directions to jump the diodes www.siriuselectronics.com )
4th JR radios don't use diodes, they have a fuse instead, some are user
replaceable and some need a tech to replace them.

Best advice I can give you is, Don't fly that pack until you have made
SURE it will function correctly.

Advertisement: If you used one of my charging systems this couldn't happen,
they know the difference :-).

If you would like to discuss this further, I'll be in the shop all day

Actually, the Triton can charge through a diode. It can't discharge
(which makes sense), but it can charge.

| I also once made the same mistake that Scobie made and plugged the

Well, if there's no diode, or a fuse didn't blow, then he almost
certainly reverse charged his pack. Exactly how much depends on how
full the batteries were when he started, and how long the charger was
on ...

The batteries were probably damaged at least somewhat, but it may not
be enough to worry about (mostly the damage would manifest as reduced
capacity.) I'd strongly suggest at least running them through a
cycler a few times and make sure they're still OK. If the capacity is
down more than 10 or 20% from the original capacity -- replace them.

Some people are down on NiMH cells for receiver packs, as they don't
stand up to abuse as well, and have higher internal resistances, and
there is truth to all that, but for transmitter packs they're perfect.
And even if you pay full retail Wal-Mart price, 8 2000+ mAh NiMH AA
cells will only cost about $20 -- cheap insurance, and you'll probably
get a pack that will last all day. (Assuming you can make your own
packs, of course.)
