[RCSE] RE: [balsasailplanes] MI WC 2005 - Woody day event with perfect conditions

2005-06-27 Thread John

Thanks Richard for a great two days of flying! I got more stick
time in this weekend than I have in all of 2005 (and I fly most days the
weather cooperates). The weather was made to order and the sod farm was ideal
to fly from. The retrievers on the winches and the golf cart for the Hi-Starts
kept things running fast and efficient. Your awards were a work of art. Someone
should put a picture of them on the web. You though of everything with
humongous subs that were outstanding for lunch, to the dinner you organized Saturday
night. Everywhere you looked was smiles. The spouses had a ball also, and Linda
just kept saying, “I had such a good time” all the way home while we laughed
about the weekends happenings. Only one thing to change for next year. You need
to put a minimum bit on the auction items so you cover some of your cost. An
electric Gnome kit for $1 or a 60’ gnome kit for $26 is just not fair to you
and has to add to you expense.

Thanks again for a great time! Linda asks that you not forget to
invite your sister next year. Her travel stories were wonderful. She sure lived
in some interesting places that are now changed forever.

John

Hey D,

Last 3 out of 4 times I've been to the Spring Fling were windy as hell.
The usual ritual for the windy sink conditions was to launch and head
straight for the row of trees to the west and do some wave surfing.
Also, The last Spring Fling I went to Bobby McGowan thermaled his image
about 5 feet off the ground for the last 4 minutes of his sink cycle
flight. The guy is just amazing to watch. I knew Bobby would flying with
a vengeance after his last round mishap at the Fresno Classic(that's the
one nobody wanted to let DP know about.:-))

Brian stated:

"What if a flyer just used one of his flights
to test an idea about a building or tree line advantage?"

To me a contest is just that, not a personal soaring experiment to try
something and then if does not work you get out of the failure. If you want to
experiment, go early and try the experiments and then be prepared for the
contest. The long haul steady pilot is the guy that knows his ship and what
different conditions yield. I think of TK, Rich B., McCarthy, Don Harris,
Daryl, Joe, Skip and others when I think of this kind of prepared pilot. They
have put their flight time in and know what to expect in all conditions, that
is why they win and others moan about the what-ifs.

Just my feeling on the matter and I know that the Atlanta guys had this on the
board from the get-go, so all knew the rule. Just wanting to know what folks
are thinking.

[RCSE] MidSouth report

2005-06-27 Thread Jon Stone

Well the MidSouth in Hot-lanta is done.  Wow, what a weekend.

I can give a very limited account of the Unlimited class standings, from
memory.   I won 1st on Saturday. Bernie Coleman 2nd.   On
Sunday, Gordy Stahl earned 2nd. I sorry, I can't remember any more for sure. Don
Cleveland earned the high overall trophy for the top pilot of the 3 days of
flying.  Don is an excellent pilot, and the award was well
earned.Weather on Saturday was no "gimme". Winds 8-15. A large no-fly
zone on one downwind side of the field, all weekend. Lift was often challenging
to find and work. Sunday was on & off light drizzle all morning,
with a very low cloud base. Several flight groups launched into the clouds. I
know once, my plane flew through a small bit of cloud, while still on the launch
line.  Yikes!  Several folks, including me, dove out of clouds, which
cost us dearly. There was very little lift, and any dive cost you minutes of
precious flight time. The landing task was a 25 ft runway landing. Wind
was never lined up with the runway. Usually 30-45 degrees off.All in
all, a challenging weekend, extremely talented pilots, and no room for mistakes.
On a personal note, I was about 23 points off of perfect for Saturday.
1st-4th place where all within about 40 points of each other. No "gimme" rounds
for me this year.

One round, I scratched at a treeline for 7 minutes to earn my 10 minute
time. Bernie Coleman flew right next to me scratching the whole time. I was
really tired of surfing and having to pay that close attention to every bobble.
But Bernie just would not quit, so I kept going. That flight was really tough.
Neither of us wanted to be buried by the other, as we were in the same MoM
flight group... so we both trudged on to earn our times. Many times, I would
turn in lift and leave the treeline, only to quickly abandon it and jump back to
the treeline. Most of the bumps of lift were just gusts and not thermals. I
could not believe how low Bernie was willing to turn, just over the treetops. On
my final flight, I nearly earned a 4 minute flight, if not for a few well timed
gifts of lift from God.The top trophies were hand crafted by an
extremely talented craftsman and pilot, Randy Chronic. Truly a labor of love and
a nice gift to those who earned top spots. The guys in Atlanta put on one
of the best contest experiences I know of. Topped off by a "low country boil"
Saturday evening. There were so many types of Cajun seafood, chicken, and pork,
I could not keep count. No one left hungry, as there was plenty of food for all.
They boiled the seafood at the field. Lots of folks, families, wives, and
clubmates showed up just for the socializing and food. Great time. These Atlanta
guys have raised the bar.

2005-06-27 Thread Eberwein

Just an update ...

Well, I finally broke down and bought 'www.LaserArts.com'
(http://www.LaserArts.com) from a squatter!

The old web sites will be forwarding to the new site shortly (waiting
for DNS updates to propegate).

Let me know what you think about it. We're still adding thinks and more
images as time allows, but it's fully functional, and a lot better than
our old one.

[RCSE] July RC Soaring Digest available

2005-06-27 Thread Bill & Bunny Kuhlman

The July 2005 issue of RC Soaring Digest is now available for
downloading from either the RCSD home page
 or from the current
issue highlights page
.

This issue is 40 pages in length and includes full color photo
coverage of the 2005 JR Aerotow (the first in the modeling
press), the 13th Annual Los Banos Fun Fly, the Yakima Spring
Warm-up and Mission BC aerotow events, plus a review of a
hybrid glue system for EPP and the final installment of the
modified Alula RC-HLG series.

Because of the tremendous number of large event coverage
photos, this issue is 8.2 MB in size. Please download and save
the PDF file by using the links on the pages noted above and
then use Acrobat Reader to view the saved PDF file.

Also, as mentioned in our "In the Air!" editorial, RCSD now has
its own domain name and sufficient server space to house the
back issue archives! The site
is still being constructed, but should be entirely on-line very
soon. Watch for an announcement through this group and on the
b2streamlines.com RCSD web site.

The deadline for submissions for the August issue of RC
Soaring Digest is July 15th.

[RCSE] Re: batteries

2005-06-27 Thread Jo Grini
On a 70A 510EN battery you will have 20-30 starts on a calibrated F3B winch
deppending on the conditions, models used and setup of model.
Most important is to change battery when you feel the power goes down AND
charge it the same day.
If you run a car battery empty or store it empty it will be ruined or become
poor quickly.

To this my wife says "thank goodness" particularly since yesterday we
exceeded the long term record for the day by two degrees.

But my batteries are getting tired with these longer opportunities that
are getting shorter.

Question. How many stalled F3B launches can be made on your F3B
battery? So what is your battery size and how many launches? I may
need to take multiple batteries or buy a new one.

Thankyou.

PS In case you did not know it the launch and the battery are entirely
different for F3B compared to a normal club setup.

Maybe the donation should be %5.00 and all the wood you can carry?

The last bonfire melted glass in seconds and vaporized beer cans before
they hit the coals!

Sure to be a hoot, as the Cap'n might say.

Don't miss this ...
