[RCSE] Zenith questions

2005-08-24 Thread SmithR2D2

Greetings,

For those who fly or did fly the Zenith:

There appears to be a "bulkhead" in my fuselage approximately 17" aft of the rear wing hold down hole.  I would like the RX antenna to run down the inside of the fuselage but the bulkhead blocks the run.  How did you get the antenna down the fuse?  Drill a hole in the bulkhead? How? Or?

Second question: If you Zenith has the 4 MM CF push rods, how or what did you do to keep the push rod from rubbing on the DB9 connector and wires coming from under the connector?  Its not much, BUT it does rub.  Would prefer it not to.  Was not a "cool" place to put the connector.  The other side has the "tube" for the ballast and the connector sure can't go there.  Your solution, IF you had this problem?  TIA

[RCSE] Death to RCR

2005-08-24 Thread George Voss

I have it from a source that I trust that RCM has
breathed its last.  Unless additional funding is procured, there won’t
be another issue published.  There are a few die-hard employees that are
trying to continue to make it happen, but the truth is, it looks like it’s
going the way of Model Builder.

If I was a gambling man, I would have thought that Flying
Models would have been the magazine to fold.  RCM has/had probably
the most ads, there for it should have been the one with the funds to succeed.
Such was not the case.

I filled out my questionnaire for
one of the “slicks’ the other day.   After
filling in all of their little blanks, in which they wanted to know how many
people look at my magazine besides me, how much money I spend on the hobby
etc., they leave four lines, approximately two inches long, with 1/4"
between the lines for me to write my comments.  They didn't leave nearly
enough room to write what I have in mind!

I took the issue of the magazine
that the survey was in and started from the cover counting full page ads.
When I got to page 80, I'd counted 40 full page ads.  This count didn't
include any pages with ads of less than a full page.  I'd venture to guess
that the magazine contained 75% advertisements or more!  When I arrived at
approximately the last quarter of the magazine, the mag contained only advertising
until the second to the last page.

Needless to say, the four short
lines they left weren't enough to put my comments.  In an effort to keep
this short and printable, I wrote to the editors that they had excellent
photos, nice paper stock, but little in the way of text that educated the
modeler.  If we don't educate modelers as to how things in this hobby
work, we will regress to the point that the hobby will disappear.  Sure
ARF's are nice, but if a modeler can't apply a plastic film covering, or make a
minor repair, new modeler will buy the ARF, break it and not know how to repair
it, and quit the hobby.  Modelers still need the basics even in an ARF
world.

My closing comments to the editor were this: "If I
weren't getting the magazine for $13.50 a year, I wouldn't
subscribe!"  On the other hand, I like what RC Report puts
out.  B. Baker and I disagree on this point as he doesn’t like RCR
because it doesn’t contain certain things ‘he’ considers
vital to a magazine.  Personally, I like giant scale, SCALE planes and how
they get those finishes.  I don’t care if they have construction
articles or not because I don’t care for ‘sport’
designs.  I like scale planes, giant’s sailplanes and electrics.
RCR is short on the last two, but RC Groups and RCSE fill that void.
This doesn’t make either of us right or wrong.  It just shows that
you can’t please everyone.

Whatever the guys in the NW are calling their magazine this
week is also of no interest of me due to what I consider “questionable”
editorial policies.  They seem to cater to advertisers instead of readers.
I hear the soaring guys complain about the lack of soaring articles,
focusing on high-end sailplanes and having too much electric stuff.  Personally
I wouldn’t subscribe regardless of what they print unless they get a new
editor and change editorial policy.  Again, you can’t please
everyone.

[RCSE] Recovering expenses - models for sale

2005-08-24 Thread Daryl Perkins
OK, it's been a rather expensive year. What with
losing 2 models, my new eyes (yes - I got glasses -
they work bitchin'!) and travelling to Muncie and
Denver Team Selects in my own planes... the 421 gets
rather pricey to fly. But it's s cool

Anyway, I'll be selling:

1 HKM Space Pro - made specifically for me. The wings
are stiff. The model is pristine, except for the top
of the fin has some hangar rash. Pics available later
this eve. Multiplex MCV2 servos in the wings. Might
have Super FL's on the ailerons. (I'll confirm later
today) I will take the servos out of the fuse as they
are the new Airtronics digitals, and they're
prototypes. Besides, I love the servos and want to
keep them. The thing thermals and flies like a dream.
Perfect windy weather F3J or TD model. Also a very
competitive F3B plane. White tops, blue bottoms. It's
pretty too. It's super fun to fly, and I really don't
want to sell it, but I have a back up. Model is 3.27
meters, and at only 83 ounces rtf. Btw - these tip
panels will plug right into your Sharon Pro 3.7 center
panel. I will sell with the battery pack, and the
servos in the wings, and obviously the wiring harness.
No receiver.

$875.00 OBO - I need to let it rip. You pay shipping.

Insanity 3.7 - this thing is tired, but still flies
GREAT! 1st place Spring Fling 2005. 1st place
Southwest Classic 2005. Nats open class 2nd place -
2004 and 2005. 2nd place Visalia - 2004. Most of my
1,000 point rounds in the TS were flying this model.
Never took a time hit with it. Those are the only
contests it's ever flown in. Not a bad record, huh?

Damage History - Midaired by Mr. Kiesling round 2 F3J
Team Selects. Crinkled the right tip panel at the tip,
and the root of the tip panel at the hingeline. Plane
is still structural. Many launches afterwards at the
TS. The fuse has been broken at the nose only. Easy
fix. Carbon bagged stabs - bagged them myself -
they're strong. Super lightweight carbon fin. Looks
cool, too.

6 Digital Multiplex MCV2's driving the control
surfaces. You get all 6 servos and the wiring
harnesses. It wouldn't be much work to make this model
pretty again. I'll take pictures later this afternoon
for your perusal this eve.

I have no idea how to put a price on this one. Just
the cost of the airframe components at wholesale are
well over 1,000 bucks. That's not even including the
price of the servos. This is the very first prototype.
Own some soaring history - how would you like to own
that very first Icon??? ;-)

I'm thinking 700 OBO. First 700 offer takes it. You
pay shipping.

(And yes, I have a new set of Insanity parts coming) I
wouldn't be without one in my quiver.

These are both steals - Ping me offline if interested.

RE: [RCSE] Death to RCR

2005-08-24 Thread Brian Courtice
Thirty two years ago, when I was twelve, my older brother brought an
issue of RCM into my parent's home. I have no idea who gave it to him or
why he brought it home, because he never even read it. I, however, read
and re-read that issue until I wore it out. It was another six years
before I could afford to get started in R/C, but in the meantime, I
haunted the newsstands every month, eagerly waiting for the next issue
of RCM to arrive.

After all these years, model airplanes are still the joy of my life.

These days, I get most of my model airplane related news and information
from the internet, and I only buy model aviation magazines on occasion.
Still, for me, it is a sad thing to realize that RCM will be no more. My
RCM magazines were the treasures of my youth, and the source of many of
my hopes and dreams.

Lots of folks complained about all the ads - me, I always felt it was the
most comprehensive/convenient comparative shopping reference out there (and
some
good columnists and designs over the years). I'll miss it (particularly
since I just renewed in May!). Good Lift!
