RE: [RCSE] "New Ky DS Record Set Today in Frankfort!"

2005-11-06 Thread Brent

Some of the other Ohio fliers
got out today, in between bursts of rain we got in some pretty good sloping
too We flew out at CJ Brown dam, in Springfield - pretty good for a West
wind, and we had plenty of that today.  By the time we called it, we had
gusts up to 40, 30 mph pretty constantly.   Wind was strong
enough that you literally had to assume a combat stance to keep your
balance.
I got a chance to put all the ballast in an M60- at
the end, that was the only foam that would stay flying in this stuff.  As I
was leaving, a Boomerang was working
its way across the lake - hopefully made it to the other shore before dark:  hope
they saved the radio
equipment.  I had a HalfPipe out for
a while, and it seemed fine without any extra weight - just amazed at how
slippery that ship is.

Quick question, tho - I
tried to duck over to the dark side, and I came close to making the swim.
What's the trick for getting behind a slope without getting chewed up?  I
know you're supposed to be pretty committed when you go in, but what's a good
way to get started?   I felt like I bled off all my energy before I
even got started.

[RCSE] Saturday Frankfort, KY Slope Photos

2005-11-06 Thread Ben Wilson

http://louisvillesoaring.org/gallery/20051105frankfort

A few videos in there as well -- Gordy DS'ing his Easy Glider and Paul
Siegel tearing up the backside with his Trinity DS. And, of course,
there were some WindRider Bats.

Man, this slope never fails to impress... the wind forecast was only for
10 MPH, but the bowl-shaped "Trumbo Bottom" carved out by the Kentucky
River focuses and amplifies the winds. Ed Wilson remarked that this
was "some of the best lift [he'd] ever seen on this slope". The real
capper to the day was that we were just past the peak of the "fall
color" season, so the valley was on fire with reds, yellows and oranges.

Our newest soaring protege', 9-year-old Lee had his first slope flights
on Saturday as well. Seeing him handling the Easy Glider on the
frontside with ease, I handed him the controls to my CombatWings XR...
and he did very well! By the end of a half-hour session he was already
doing loops and rolls! Be on the watch for this kid in the very near
future...

I know you all hear those of us with WindRider Bats talk about them all
the time -- but there is good reason for that. I tree'd my Bat three
(3) different times, slammed it into the hill a terminal speeds a
half-dozen times and even knocked off my vertical stab and it just kept
flying. Amazing. As long as you have metal-gear servos you'll be set!

If you live within a few hours of us, keep an eye out on the wind
forecast for Frankfort and come join us on a south or south-west weekend.

Re: [RCSE] NIMH winter storage

2005-11-06 Thread Simon Van Leeuwen
Batteries begin to degrade in performance as soon as they are born,
NiCD/NiMH included. Long term storage of both nickel-based and
lithium-based should be at no more than 40% state of charge (SoC), and
at no higher than 15C (lower is better, but not below freezing). This
minimizes age related losses of capacity.

[RCSE] Just a moment?

2005-11-06 Thread David Nasatir

What will be the flight behavior consequence of a very long tail moment?

I have been working on a two meter full house ship of my own design
based upon classic TLAR principles.
To my astonishment, when I attached the wings today, things didn't look
"about right" at all. The tail moment appears to be much too long.

I will undergo cataract surgery tomorrow and maybe it will look right
after that, but I doubt it.

So I've got this glider with a longer than "usual" distance from wing
trailing edge to V-tail leading edge. What flight characteristics (due
to this particular factor) should I expect when I launch it?

I believe it was about 1946 when I first realized that there is often a
substantial distance between the way I envision things and the way they
turn out after I have actuallty built them. It doesn't matter too much
(at least to me) however, as I enjoy the process even though the product
is usually so bad that friends have been known to take models away from
me and then return them in a condition so lovely that I am uncomfortable
trying to fly them.

Anyway, what should I expect once the eye heals up and I get up the
courage to launch this thing?

Thanks,

Dave

RE: [RCSE] NIMH winter storage

2005-11-06 Thread George Voss

Al, thanks for posting
this, but the article covers NiCad’s, not NiMh.  I don’t know
if NiMh should be handled differently.  Personally, I don’t “store”
anything.  I just pull out each transmitter and cycle the batteries every
30-60 days on my Alpha 4.  I’ve never had a problem with my
transmitter batteries.  gv

Yes, Paul and I made a Gordy sandwich with Bat bread! Lord know how we didn't
midair and make a bunch of foam dots. I also flew my Blade and Vortex and Paul
also flew a Vindicator and Trinity. It was indeed a great day!
