My understanding is that it will be Feb 11-12. There has not been an
announcement opening registration yet. George Joy will be the CD.

This is a good change in the dates, in previous years we ran concurrent with
a big golf tournament and that made rooms and flights more difficult to get.
And we also avoid the Superbowl conflict on the 5th.

[RCSE] micro sloper....

2005-11-17 Thread Douglas, Brent
My brother went sloping this weekend with me, had a good time... Now
he's ordered a Combat Wing ARF, but he was looking to build something -
liked the idea of a light, light ship.

Has anyone here flown the Alula? Is it a good flying plane?? Any other
suggestions for something similar, a Weasel or the like?Goal is
something to work light lift, should be foam . Bonus points if he
gets to buy micro equipment - he likes the research as much as the
building.

Re: [RCSE] micro sloper....

2005-11-17 Thread Bill Swingle
Ah, the hunt for a light lift sloper. An ever present search for most
slopers.

You mentioned foam. Fine. It can be done. But it's difficult to do well.

The combat wing Boomerang is pretty good in light lift. If you build it as
light as you can. 14 ounces is a doable goal weight that will yield
reasonable light lift performance. Mine is 16oz. and does well enough at
that with few if any compromises.

The old TG-3 *could* also be built light enough to yield reasonable light
lift performance. The old highlander is also reasonably good.

The Mongo Jr. is also pretty good in light lift if built for that.

The Alula is rumored to be pretty good but I've never seen one.

The Red Herring is also pretty good.

But for real light lift performance you have to choose a non-foam plane. The
Climax or any of the high dollar HLG's are very good.

Whatever choice he makes, the construction will be critical to achieving the
performance he desires. A micro plane is harder to build well.

Re: [RCSE] micro sloper....

2005-11-17 Thread Greg Smith
Brent,

I much prefer the Weasel for slope. I have both the Alula and a couple of
Weasels. The Alula is really too light for most slope conditions and the
Weasel will fly in almost as light a wind condition. The mass of the Weasel
makes it much better at retaining energy. I've flown my Weasel in 3-4 mph
and had a blast! I've DSed it in 5mph and it is a riot! I've also flown it
in 30 plus although normally by that time I'd have long since pulled out a
different plane.

The Alula is good for side arm launching and for flat field stuff though.
The Weasel really is not made for that.

[RCSE] Post bagging formation of skin depressions.

2005-11-17 Thread Harley Michaelis
I'm puzzled about the random, shallow depressions that sometimes form after
bagging and wondering if others experienced in bagging know the cause and
how to prevent it.

My inquiry is prompted by the worst case I've ever seen in some 14 years of
bagging wings. There are no less than 60 of the depressions in a 48
panel. There are about 20 on the bottom skin and the rest on the top. All are
behind the spar that runs about 2-1/2 back from the LE on a 10 chord
slightly tapered panel. The depressions are 1/100 or less in depth and most
are 3/8 to 1/2 in diameter.

The cores were cut from Dow High Load 60 and looked perfect. The epoxy used
was fresh West 105 with fresh slower 206 hardener. The carriers had been
waxed and polished with 3 coats of Meguires #26 paste wax and painted with
common Krylon. The layup was 1.4 oz. glass on a bias and the 4.7 oz. ACP
80/20 unidirectional CF cloth.

The epoxy was rolled on to thoroughly wet all out. Toilet tissue was then
rolled out on the work and a roller used to pick up excess. The work was
folded in 3 mil drop cloth with breather attached to it and then left in the
bag at room temperature for 36 hours. Toilet tissue used to pick up epoxy
and saved to judge cure in the bag was well cured. The vacuum was set to
cycle from 15 to 10 hg's. The Gast pump setup was running 5-6 seconds every
16 minutes. Paint transfer was perfect. TE's are straight, true and rigid.

All the above is in keeping with techniques used for years on many dozens of
panels. Most came out normally. A few had some depressions.

Have any of you had the same experience? Confirmed the cause? Preventative
medicine? Have any of you suspected moisture content in the foam cores?
Would its release be more likely to cause bubbles rather than depressions?
Have any of you placed a core panel by itself in the bag to see if any of
the depressions would appear before actually applying the layup? Did they?
Did you fill the depressions before bagging? Did new ones still appear?

Please give us all the benefit of your experience.

RE: [RCSE] Post bagging formation of skin depressions.

2005-11-17 Thread Aradhana Singh Khalsa
I'm puzzled about the random, shallow depressions that sometimes form
after bagging and wondering if others experienced in bagging know the
cause and how to prevent it.

Handling dents come from finger tips, leftover drops of hardened epoxy on
the board, pieces (even very small) of anything that the wing rests on while
you are cutting hinges, trimming trailing edges, sanding leading edges,
joining, wiring---you get the picture. You can get many tens of them from a
single or pair of drops on the board as you move the wing around!

Working in the shucks helps minimize this sort of damage.

REMOVING DENTS
For foam core wings, you can remove practically all of this damage after the
fact. Heat a monokote sealing iron to very hot, fold a paper towel to four
or eight layers, wet the paper towel to soaking, almost dripping wet. Lay
the wet folded paper towel onto the dented are and the iron over that.
Generally speaking (common sense here), the more steam/boiling water, the
better. Severe damage can be helped by pouring boiling water over the area,
even multiple times.

Do not let the iron touch the wing directly. Always work with a wet towel.

Actually he doesn't make any framesthe brand x plastic
frames were inspired by ..yep Volz... Michael contracted with a German F3J pilot
who has a plastic injection business to make plastic frames for the Micro Maxx

glued down...and the screw holes eventually got worn by the steel screws.
That fella makes theBlue Plastic Volz mounts and plasticbrand x

You can still get some of the metal frames for larger sized
servos, say with about a1/3rd more torque and speed

bottom just needs painted black.
I am looking to trade this for a 2m ship for my step son to learn on.
if you have anything in the hangar that is just gathering dust let me
know.

RE: [RCSE] SWC

2005-11-17 Thread Jim Monaco
My understanding is that it will be Feb 11-12. There has not been an
announcement opening registration yet. George Joy will be the CD.

This is a good change in the dates, in previous years we ran concurrent with
a big golf tournament and that made rooms and flights more difficult to get.
And we also avoid the Superbowl conflict on the 5th.

What are the dates for the Southwest Classic this year? The CASL web site
doesn't have the information for dates or registration. I can't sign up if
I don't know when?

[RCSE] Re: [USA_FAI_Soaring] Challenge the US F3J Team at the SWC!!!

I will fly against 'em off of winches.

As acting team
manager for the US F3J team I am working on novel ideas for providing
challenging practice sessions for the team. One idea I am kicking
around is to sponsor an informal F3J competition on the Thursday prior to
the SWC. While Friday would be logistically better we would
severely interfere with frequencies and real estate for those coming in
to practice just for the SWC on Friday. Monday is out since the field is
not rented for that day and there are no known venues in the Phoenix area
that we could use.

I am considering bringing a couple of club winches to the event and while
the US Team will be practicing real F3J launches, we could also have
pilots launching off the winches at the same time. We could argue
‘til the cows come home whether the winches are better or worse and give
someone an advantage/disadvantage but FOCUS!!! This is an informal fun
event – it just does not matter. If you have F3J equipment, bring
it and find some towers and have at it. We’ll even supply F3J
equipment to a few groups if you can get towers and want to give F3J a
try. If you don’t have equipment but want to give F3J a try, you
can use the winches. I’ll take the responsibility of grouping
pilots into teams, remember there is no team score, teams are just
arrangements for working together (calling, towing, etc). I’ll be
bringing the sound system we used at the Team Selections, so we’ll have
the real thing.

I need to gauge if this is realistic and if there are enough interested
pilots to participate. If you think you would like to participate
on Thursday, please send me an email and indicate if you want to use the
winches or hand tow and if hand tow, whether you need equipment.

Prizes (if any) are to be determined – remember this is a low budget
operation… J

Thanks - Jim

[RCSE] building stuff-- suggestions-- anybody got more ideas?

2005-11-17 Thread Tom Moore
here's a good link to some products from Rockler
http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=10562

Their CA is pretty reasonable-- probably not foam safe. good price

But the neat item is the interchangeable tip package #67727 nice size
selection tips 2 of each plus a 2 caps, easily removed and cleaned. you can
add Teflon tubing for really fine tips, etc. I found it much better than
the std hobby tips

RE: [RCSE] micro sloper....

2005-11-17 Thread glide
I've got a couple planes that are kind of small for the slope. Both were
bought off eBay. But they are not foam planes. I like slope planes that
actually look like planes grin. The first one is the Silhouette. It is a
low wing slope racer that has a wing span of about 43 inches. I plan to
install a ballast tube in the wing for the brisk trade wind we have during
the spring and summer. The other plane is the Climmaxx (1.5 meter wing
span). It is a fun plane to fly on the slope since it has a full flying
rudder. It is a great plane when the trade wind is kind of mellow. Both
planes can be built light and strong and will take any size electronics.

But I know, you want foam...

Oh the JW I have is pretty good. It is not real light but it will fly
respectably in light steady trade wind.

Subject: [RCSE] micro sloper

My brother went sloping this weekend with me, had a good time... Now
he's ordered a Combat Wing ARF, but he was looking to build something -
liked the idea of a light, light ship.

Has anyone here flown the Alula? Is it a good flying plane?? Any other
suggestions for something similar, a Weasel or the like?Goal is
something to work light lift, should be foam . Bonus points if he
gets to buy micro equipment - he likes the research as much as the
building.

Thanks,
Brent

Re: [RCSE] Metal servo frames

2005-11-17 Thread Jim Porter

Snip - because the CNC Aluminum
frames were too expensive and difficult to keep glued down..

Keeping the plastic
frames in place can also be a problem. It's helpful to lay small pieces of
fiberglass over the corners of the mounts when you epoxy them in place.
The fiberglass pieces also help to reinforce the joint between the vertical
parts of the plastic mount and the base. I've broken a couple of the
plastic mounts and adding the fiberglass seems to prevent
this.

I really preferred the metal
mounts. Adding the fiberglass on the corners of the metal mounts
eliminated any problems with them coming loose.

.and the screw holes eventually got
worn by the steel screws.

This makes me
wonder how many times you remove and reinstall the servos.

That fella makes theBlue
Plastic Volz mounts and plasticbrand x mounts Craig supplies, good stuff
from a couple of great guys!

Still, as Gordy says, and this kills me to agree 8-), both these guys do
provide pretty good products.
