Title: More info on the electric motor/esc issue

I’ve run all the endpoints to the max, I’ve put the trim at its lowest position.  If I use a 4.8v battery with a servo in the throttle channel, it works fine.  I’ve emailed Mike at Kontronics for a copy of the instructions so maybe that will help.  I’m still looking for responses, thanks. gv

[RCSE] Electric motor and speed control help

2006-06-22 Thread George Voss
Title: Electric motor and speed control help

I purchased a used Aveox 12LMR with a Kontronics 3SL 70-6-18 ESC pre-wired from someone on this list.  To that I've added a Medusa battery eliminator.  I was told the motor and esc have only been used a couple of times and I feel confident the units are serviceable.

I'm using 10 1700mah Nicads with an Airtronic RD8000 and 777 receiver.  I've plugged the BEC into the battery slot, the ESC plug into the throttle channel.  The servos work but I get nothing out of the motor or ESC.  The motor has 5 pin female plug coming out of it which I'm pretty sure is for sensors, but this is a sensorless control so nothing is hooked up to it.

Any ideas why my throttle doesn't work?

Please contact me direct as I need to get this unit, or another going pretty quickly.  Thanks.  gv

JR 9303 TX set up for the XP4 - includes case.

Just do not have the time to fly it.

All parts are new for this build.

Preference given to local sale and prefer not to split up the bundle. For mail out I would be asking for actual packing, shipping and insurance costs from my local UPS store.

$750.00 - do not plan to break up this bundle - if you want one or the other team up and save some clams

Thanks for reading

Re: [RCSE] Re: Can one use a copper wire for an antenna

2006-06-22 Thread Martin Usher
Don't forget to keep the total antenna length about the same as the
original receiver antenna length, don't loop back surplus wire (just
zig/zag it in the wing if its too long) and be careful of any connector
you put in the antenna lead -- unlike other connections you'll never
notice a poor contact, or even a disconnection, until too late (reduced
range).

You can use thin insulated wire, stuff like one strand of a servo cable,
and stranded is preferred over single core because its less likely to
break (its also a bit better electrically but you'd probably notice -- a
break OTOH won't show up at all except as reduced radio range).

RE: [RCSE] Problems with GE Silicone II

2006-06-22 Thread George Voss
There is a silicone made specifically for electrical components.
Unfortunately, it's hard to find and expensive for a small amount. RS used
to carry it but no longer does. If the silicone has an acidic smell, i.e.
it smells like vinegar, it will cause corrosion in electrical applications.
I'd guess that's what happened to your servo. The electrical grade silicone
doesn't smell like vinegar.

Like Jeff mentions, it's going to be tough to remove it from the surface. I
recommend epoxy-ing the servos to a piece of balsa and then epoxy the balsa
to the fuselage. That way you have a release film. Some people wrap the
servo in masking tape and then epoxy the servo in place. I've done that too
in certain situations. gv

Re: [RCSE] Problems with GE Silicone II

2006-06-22 Thread Jeff Steifel

I think it is a big mistake using silicone.

One there is no way to decontaminate it short of sanding to the layer
past it. But as you sand it pushes it down so you have to change paper
frequently and vacuum it out.

Two ... it doesn't get along with electrical components.
Three the cure is too slow and any repair will require a repair with
silicone.
Four there are better products. Epoxy, if you need flexibility there is
hot glue or PFM like glues.

No idea why it didn't cure. But, when the silicon dies cure it emits an acid
as part of the process. These acid fumes eat away copper.

I found this out when I mounted a servo with silicon and it soon there after

The servo failure could be related to the acid
contained in the Silicone.  Goop does not contain acid and does not contain
Silicone.  You should be able to remove the Silicone by rubbing it off
after it is cured.

I use Loctite 5140 for servo installations.
It is non-corrosive, translucent, self-leveling, and meets MIL-A-46146B Group I
type II.  It is probably over engineered for this application, but it has
worked well for many years.

I'm looking to install a wire in wing for an antenna. Can I use a very
thin copper wire for an antenna?

TIA

Stan

RE: [RCSE] Looking for a 2-M

2006-06-22 Thread Bob Johnson
My vote is for one day of 2M followed by two days of Unlimited, followed by
one day of RES, followed by one day of Nostalgia/woodcrafters.

The Nats should have a complete day that recognizes those of us that like to
'roll our own'! :)

No. I vote to move HLG to Monday. Then 1 day of 2M to warm-up for 2
days of unlimited.

I see a Duck commercial here. The most touted un-obtainable plane made.

You guys just need to explore low aspect ratio design so you can see

unlimited. Hide radio in tapered wing.

[RCSE] Re: Can one use a copper wire for an antenna

2006-06-22 Thread Lincoln Ross
If you can't, then I've been a very lucky free flighter all these years.
I've used a number of different kinds of wire. Adminttedly the one with
the thinnest, about 15" of lizst(sp?) wire and some gadgety base load,
has only been flown to 1/4 mile downwind. It was an indoor model, the
day was too windy, but I managed to get it to come down on the other
side of the school building. Just range check. Also, you may want to
set up a system, mechanical or behavioral, so you never launch without
connecting that antenna.

I've also used thin copper tape as external servo wiring, tho I had to
use capacitors out near the servos. The thin copper tape might make a
nice antenna as well.
