Re: [RCSE] Latest news on 60 Acres South
Jim - Your struggle here is a valiant one, and one that I think many clubs around the nation (perhaps the world) have to contend with. We here in Louisville have successfully negotiated the preservation of our flying site over the years -- though as sprawl increases, we may very well be faced with the opposition you now face. I was particularly encouraged in your case by the mention of the county law clarifying the bond issue defined a regional park as land developed primarily to provide outdoor-recreation opportunities not feasible in urbanized areas. While I am a soccer fan and encourage kids to be involved with the sport, I think the better question here, and the one posed by the county law is this: Are we disadvantaging other non-Soccer groups and thereby infringing on that law? I think that is an excellent leg to stand on, and one that I would assume could be used by a good number of clubs around the country. And to echo Breck's question about a legal defense fund - I'd chip in what I could to help you out! The Seattle Times covered the story in print, and talk radio host Dave Ross spent an entire hour on the issue during his morning show. Re: [RCSE] Latest news on 60 Acres South
Its not just soccer -- around here the problem was turning an open area into (yet another) golf course. You have to be careful taking on soccer head on because it involves so many kids so obviously anything that benefits soccer must benefit the community (right..) and we're such a minority that we don't have the votes or the fiscal clout to make a big noise. Its a little easier with golf courses because its quite obvious what's going on -- its a mechanism to convert public facilities for private use. [RCSE] VENDOR WARNING!!!!
To all of you who decide to buy something from Jim Porter I have to warn you! He sold me a Thorn sloper kit recently and I got home last nite from the beaches and found that not only did I have to pay for the kit, the shipping but had to hire a contractor to get the box open and the contents unpacked. They worked for hours with blow torches, vacuums (yes he does use peanuts!), and various hydrualic cutting devices before I even got to all the bubble wrap on the parts! Before I go any farther I have to add this, "I pity the fools passed this thing up!" :-) I'm not sure that you could actually call the Thorn a sailplane...its more like a caricature of a molded sailplane that has been produced by Louisville Slugger Mfgring. Since it has been done a CNC mill, the fuse and wings actually resemble current moldedcomponents. All shaped rounded routed with wing mounting blind nuts etc installed. Pretty much all you add is varnish :-) It is sleek and curvedand it is SOLID wood! Okay back to that darned Jim Porter and his packingI had to cut through about 6 layers of tightly taped bubble wrap just to see the parts. When I asked Jim why he packed this thing with so much cushioning, he said that UPS refused to take it without because they were afraid it might damage their trucks! I am sooo glad I bought the Thorn, it is one of those rare items that happens every once in a while in our hobby's history. From its weight, the supplier assures the buyer that it flys in the lightest of lift, as long as you are tossing off a slope located on the moon. Big wooden grin today! Gordy Google it and take a look at the video of it soaring

Folks, I'm the treasurer of SASS. I am not sure how much money we'll need - we're fortunate that one of our very own is the one who filed the case. If you would like to make a donation, please contact me via an offline email and I'll send you contact information. Thank you for your support - I sure hope we're able to save this field! - Dave Brombaugh -Original Message- From: Martin Usher [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 05, 2006 10:48 To: soaring@airage.com Subject: Re: [RCSE] Latest news on 60 Acres South Its not just soccer -- around here the problem was turning an open area into (yet another) golf course. Re: [RCSE] I Pity the Fool Didn't Read MA's Sept/Oct Soaring Columns!
Hi Gordy, Thanks for the kind words. As I have said many times, it is not my column. I am only the middleman on the information food chain. I need input from many. I'm limited though on the every other month schedule. The next one will have some fiberglass information. Darwin N.
