Re: [RCSE] The Stylus, Airtronics

2008-04-30 Thread Mike Fox

Hi Guys,

From what I have heard from Airtronics also is, that the new 10 channel is
being developed and hopefully out to the public in Feb. 09. Sanwa is using
the same engineers that developed the Stylus. They also said there are plans
to make a 2.4ghz module to fit the Stylus as it is still a good and popular
radio. There is also talk about a higher end radio down the road, maybe 14
channel, good for our large Scale ships.

I just got the Airtronics RDS8000 and flew it last weekend in a electric.
Worked flawlessly! The RDS8000 does not have sliders for soaring, but it
was not really intended to be that kind of radio. I think it is a excellent
middle of the line radio. It has alot of mixing availible. I will fly my
electric planes, heli and will try some sailplanes to figure out the 2.4
stuff.

I think there is some good stuff coming :-)

Yes its one of those new technical terms like "ping" "lag" and "whackadoo"
:) But the context was used inappropriately.

Seriously they way I type out a message and typically fail to hit spellcheck
I would be surprised if there are not more errors than this. This is also
slightly ironic because although Sanwa/ Airtronics has created arguably the
most amazing glider oriented product to date for a TX for the last several
years soaring specialists have been largely "uncluded" in any new
developments.

That being said the Stylus has stood the test of time in part due to its
feature rich offering that is only just now being matched by JR and Futaba.

Re: [RCSE] The Stylus, Airtronics, and Houdini

2008-04-30 Thread LJolly

Friends in Soaring,
As you know I flew Airtronics systems for years and years. I remember when
I got my first Stylus in the early 90's, it was and is, a classic Radio.
However radio design did not stop in 1991. I was involved in discussions for
at
least 3 new radio designs for Sanwa, that were always canceled. It took 4
years to get the 94761 Servo in to our hands, this drove Ron nuts because he
knew
We all had JR servos in our Gliders. I can remember many meetings with Sanwa
Engineers where they patiently listened to what We wanted, and nodded in
agreement. Then 6 months down the road, it was like We had never had the
discussion. We were crying for a new Glider Card, but it wasn't possible. Did
you
ever stop to wonder Why there is not Stylus replacement from Sanwa? The truth
is the Stylus was designed here in America as a project for Airtronics. I
think it was by the same Team that did the software for the Vision. Sanwa has
never designed a radio with all the features of the Stylus. I am not saying
they can't do it, I'm just looking back at my experience with Sanwa, where
they
chose not to do it. If you guys are waiting for Sanwa to come up with your
Stylus replacement, you might get tired of waiting, I know I did. I jumped to
JR and have never been happier. They have a full line of cutting edge Radio
gear, Great Service, Incredible Support for Soaring, and more important,
People willing to listen to us. Team Red is growing, while you are waiting,
We'll
be flying.

[RCSE] Turnaround Trolls Needed

2008-04-30 Thread Sheldon Smith
Boys and Girls, it's time again to start rounding up volunteers to be
Turnaround Trolls at the 2008 Soaring Nationals. If you are attending the
Nats with your son(s)/daughter(s) and they would like to "volunteer" to be
one of the Turnaround Trolls, please make sure you get them registered as a
volunteer (links to the volunteer forms are on the LSF website) and let me
know as well please. You can contact me offline at: "nodlehs at rochester
dot rr dot com".

We need a minimum of 5 volunteers, and would like to have 10 if possible (2
to a cart). The kids will be shagging 'chutes back from the turnarounds,
using golf carts, over some pretty bumpy terrain. As long as the CD says
we're flying, the kids will be providing retrieval services for the
pilots.rain, shine, hot, or cold, they do it. We've never had an issue in
the past, and the Trolls have never been the "hold-up" for not getting a
flight launched. Needless to say, safety is paramount, and I don't tolerate
much "goofing-off" or any practices that I or the other officials deem as
"unsafe". I talk with the Trolls up-front, they understand the
responsibility and importance, and what I expect of them, and so far, we've
never had a Troll that didn't want to volunteer again (maybe they're too
scared of me to quit? ). The kids have been great to work with, I've
always had a good hard-working crew, and they have always received a
"well-done" from all of the pilots for their efforts, which they really
appreciate hearing.

I too had a RD8000 the 72mhz version I'm guessing the 2.4 version has the same
software.

And I agree with Mike it is a great radio for electrics and 2 to 4 channel
sailplanes and handlaunch the
RD8000 is light but has a inexpensive look to it, the RD8000 seems geared to
power and heli's.

RD8000 is lacking for F3X needs Like sliders, flight modes, 6 servo control, 3
position switches to name a few.

I now have ONE radio that fly's all my toys and that's the way it should be.

2008-04-30 Thread LJolly
Apologies to the Airtrix guys. Guys, I totally forgot the Infinity 1000,
Sanwa's 10 channel sophisticated radio. This Radio had lots of programming
power, it was just a little convoluted to get from here to there.
By the way after my last post Jimbo called and offered me $60.00 for my
9303. When I said WHAT!!!
He told me that I couldn't expect to get top dollar for an out dated
System!! He told me that since I am flying the 12X I no longer need the 9303.
OK, I
guess I deserve it !! LJ

Yes it is exactly the same - except of course the "fail safe" and
modulation settings. I have a few models on the 72mhz version, and
just went thru the menus one at a time copying all the settings to the
new radio. Seems to work with just a few minor trim changes.

True it is geared that way - however the RD8000 will address up to 8
channels. The most sophisticated setup is for my Kangke Monocoupe
towplane. It works elevator, rudder, throttle, 2 independent aileron
servos, 2 independent flap servos and the tow release. This setup also
handles reflex and landing flaps ON THE 3-POSITION SWITCH.
I will be experimenting with electric / full-house setups. The biggest
issue I see for F3X stuff is lack of camber control (no slider). I
really wish it had a rotary knob for heli pitch control too.

Yes - I agree and the RD8000 has room for only 10 models. I'm eagerly
anticipating the Stylus 2.4 module release!
I have a lot of brand loyalty so I'm really pleased that Airtronics
has a 2.4 system that I can use for my power planes and helis. I live
pretty close to a club field so 2.4 is a godsend. Now I can fly in the
openspace next to my house like I did before the field was built. I've
lost several planes at that field on 72mhz - to undetermined
interference which has claimed many planes there. Hopefully the 2.4
radios will eliminate that problem.
