[RCSE] Espada!

2008-05-01 Thread Charlie
A bit about my Espada.
Lenny Keer put this model together.
It has Airtronic's 761's in the wing.
JR servo's in the fuse. Can't read the servo number, but they are the typical
JR's everyone uses.
Yellow top, Blue bottom.
Control surfaces are blue on the top.
Bottom of right wing has a yellow wing tip.
This is a sharp glider, I have decided to go with the Perfect for competition.
So the Espada is out of the mix.
I will be attending F3J In the Rockies, I can deliver it there..
What can I do to get you into this glider today. Hahahahaha!
$1900 Or make an offer, I may budge a little. ;)

  Hi guys,

I was just chatting life the universe and everything with Barry
Kennedyand the topic came to the cost of sailplanes (to him) obviously
based on the opposite directions of the Euro to Dollar.

The Dollar is down a little more today again...

I talk to guys all over my travels who say they will be buying a new ship in
the near future...but in the near future, the prices have to go up. The
sailplane's our suppliers have purchased and paid for last month is
pricey...but the ones they will replace with today are going to cost them more
USA cash...and cost YOU more for waiting a month...or a week.

Barry has the latest version of the Supra in stock today, new aileron
construction, new horn construction, lighter and stiffer and 2.4 friendly...for
the same $1,400 that they have been at ...but he ordered them with full wing
wiring harnesses (usually another $40, almost whether you make it or buy it
pre-made) at no extra charge. That's got to change if it's going to be worth
him and our other brand sailplane suppliers bothering to put up with our
frequently asked questions and whining about dents and flaws..and questions
about 'are we there yet daddy?to make it worth the repeated trips to the
airport and the friendly customs agents...paper work, loading and unloading
vans, stacking, inventoryingweb site maint, etc.

Wait and Wailit could cost you cash.

  Sumth'n to think about ;-).

[RCSE] What's the big deal about 2.4?

2008-03-07 Thread Charlie
The big deal for me?
Because of the huge surge to go with 2.4. There is a lot of discontent towards
the old 72 MHz. And pilots are selling off the 72 stuff everywhere...
I am enjoying the low! Low! Prices on Stylus radio's and radio accessories!
I think it's all good! It's a win, win situation. As we speak, the number of
frequencies we have to control is decreasing!
I may go with 2.4 in my gliders. Since I do fly at large contests, the
frequency security makes sense.
But locally I fly at well controlled sites. And besides, I know who is on my
channel around here. We are a tight group, and not that many pilots.
I do look at it on the practical side as well.. I have about 20 aircraft that
are loaded, and ready to fly.. I thought about how much it would cost to change
out all the receivers.. I just laughed!
I think I will be ok with 72 MHz for awhile. ')

[RCSE] Winch/Sharon

2007-12-21 Thread Charlie
Greetings
Do we really have to winch with full pedal all the way up the line? Remember,
the more line we take in, the less altitude we can get. If the flight window
starts after we get off the line, I don't see a reason to rush the launch. I
see many pilots tap the glider up the line, then build tension near the top for
a great zoom. This would be appropriate when there is a launch wind.. Down
wind? This is full pedal time! I don't think there can be enough tension to
break the line...
My winch doesn't seem to have a problem with line breaks. Even with a full
pedal launch.. I attribute this to the drum diameter.. It has more torque, less
speed. With lots of speed, a winch will bog down. We loose tension when this
happens. I prefer high torque. I think contest directors should consider this.
It would eliminate many of the line breaks... And you still will get a great
launch.
I agree that we can't blame winches for not handling the larger gliders.. We
need to manage the glider better up the line.. If we want to have new standards
for winches, that would be ok. I think the smaller diameter drum would be the
cheapest way to cure the line break problem...
I will be at the SWC in Feb. Remember last year?? Line break city??? Perhaps
we all can make a good effort to manage our tension?
I will be flying my Sharon. I will have two with me. I will sell one of them
after the contest.
Hope you all have a Merry Christmas.
Cheers
Charlie

[RCSE] High End!

2007-12-14 Thread Charlie
I thought the High End looked pretty good..
But since it's an F3J glider, I didn't expect the fuse to look like anything
but thin. The thing to appreciate is the wing.
That's the tool, that is what we are flying, and it's the part that changes the
most.
Look at a full scale glider.. The fuse really hasn't changed much. But the
wings have gone through some big changes over the years. As it did with model
glider's.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
Some pilots really don't care what they look like, as long it does the job. And
wins contests. For some pilots, it's all about looks!
It's the same with the flying characteristic's. Some gliders are exciting to
fly, Some are boring. Like the Pike Perfect. It's like an old Emerald in it's
prime.. It really does the job. But isn't very exciting to fly. When I fly for
fun, I want more excitement. More lively performance. But in competition, I
use what will work in the conditions I am faced with. I have a couple of
Sharon's, A Pike Perfect, and a Espada RL! I think I am covered!
Now if our daily temperatures would get above 40, and some of this snow would
go away, I could actually fly!!!
I hate winter!
Merry Christmas!

[RCSE] Nose Weight?

2004-03-29 Thread Charlie Miller
Absolutely!
I wouldn't be so concerned with how much weight you have to put in the
glider. Balance it and fly it!
My Emerald was 68 oz.. It had plenty of nose weight.
I do suggest the built up rudder. That's the only mod I had.
I also used volz servo's. I believe they are some of the lightest servo's
there are. It all add's up!
Just a note! On my full scale ASW20, the glider weight was just under 600
LB's .. It needed a minimum of about 150 LB's in the nose to fly!! (pilot)

[RCSE] Tow Plane?

2004-03-12 Thread Charlie Miller
Greetings!
We use the Kangke Monocoupe ARF! Powered by the Moki 2.10 . But the biggest
glider we can tow is the 6.5 Nimbus..About 20LB's. And you have to be fairly
smooth. Anything 4.5 meter and smaller, The Monocoupe works very good.. And
looks good as well!
A 30 LB Ventus? How cool! looks like your going to need a serious Gas
powered tow.
We have been towing a few day's a week.. All I can say is it's a ton of fun.
I had two half hour flights yesterday with my 3.1 meter duo discus...
As far as large tow planes, My favorite is the Wilga! Unfortunately they are
very pricey!
Good luck and happy soaring!!

Greetings!
Just started settling in here and thinking of the great weekend at the SWC.
I want to thank the CASL members for all their hard work to bring us a great
SWC this year. I felt the contest was run smooth and the field set up very
comfortable.
It reminded me of the old field, very much the same feel.

The Slow Stick combat was great to watch. I am sure that event will grow
rapidly!

Congrads to all that placed. A job well done considering the landing
conditions on Saturday. I really don't think many, if any made all their
landings all weekend.

Mother nature did get take a stab at us on Sunday.
For those who got hit by the big sink cycle in the last round, I feel for
ya! Been there, done that!

Thanks again CASL! I WILL see you next year!

[RCSE] Don't throw your damaged wings away!

Greetings!
I agree with Gordy!!Wait!
What am I saying???

Well I actually took my damaged wing and cut it into 6 section's! I wanted
to see how they were put together..
It was a great learning experience. I understand more about wing
construction.
I carried a few sections around for a few weeks. What a great conversation
piece... All the pilots that examined the pieces were very interested as
well..
The wing in my opinion wasn't repairable. The spar was broken and splintered
severely!
Yes it cost me a round which was unfortunate. But I gained knowledge...

[RCSE] Scale?

2003-11-05 Thread Charlie Miller
Greetings!
I see lots of people compare TD/F3J/F3B to scale.
I am a full scale glider pilot.. In the past I have given glider intro
rides. Lots of them. There is no points for anything!
Yes you have to land at the field preferably! And I can land and stop at the
same spot everytime. Gliders are equipped to land very well. They also have
wheel brakes that work very well. This is simple energy management. That is
basically what flying is all about!
When a pilot in a TD contest can't make it back to the tape? Energy
management!
When a pilot approaches the landing tape with good conditions into the wind,
and has lots of speed and DORK's it? Energy management!
To stay up in soft conditions? Energy management!

In full scale competition they have lots of points similar to our point
system. They get points for speed and distance. Not for landings! But they
do have to land back at the field. Thats a task in it's self concidering the
distance they traveled.

I do have question's about R/C scale meets.
What do they do? Are there any points?
Why do most of the tow planes look like a giant square fuselage with a park
bench wing on it? I have never seen a real tow plane like this! So you have
this beautiful three thousand dollar glider towed up with a thing that
doesn't look like anything!
I have watched several video's of launches and landings..
Real tow planes can't tow straight up! Again not scale!
And 99% of the glider landings were very sketchy.. Lots of bouncing, ground
looping, rolling off the runway into the rough. And several breaks on
landing...
I guess I don't get it? It's suppose to be scale! It doesn't look like
scale! Well the only thing that looks scale is the glider. And there were a
few nice looking tow planes.. But very few!
Thanks for the thread!
Cheers
Charlie

[RCSE] Thread is getting old!

2003-11-04 Thread Charlie Miller
Greetings!
Well I can agree with lots of stuff on this very strung out thread. I hope
it breaks soon!

I agree that if pilots want a woody contest that they should have it.

I agree if you don't like skeggs, you shouldn't use them!
It's your choice! Just because another pilot uses a skegg,
doesn't mean you have to. In fact I would like to see a pilot win Phoenix
next year without a skegg.
As far as the hard DORK landings not looking right?
Well I agree! A hard dork is not a good landing. It's either bad energy
management, or a down wind landing. Just because you have a skegg, you
should still land with minimum energy.

I agree with Daryl, The best pilots find a way to get through the bad luck
and turn it into a good flight. After all, that's what we all strive for!
Finding the lift when it's not obvious!
Finding the lift when other pilots are falling out of the sky.
But even the best can have bad luck and not finish where they wanted.

If we make it to easy, as many pilots have wanted, the best pilots will
never loose.

The only thing I will not agree with is some of these crazy landing targets
that CD's come up with.
I think most pilots are use to a tape. We fly a tape all year in our club
contests.. Pilots get use to this. It's a standard I think everyone uses..
When we go to a big contest and see a freakish landing target it gets lots
of pilots uptight! They don't feel comfortable! They start to put the blame
on the target, not their skills.. It is fair for everyone! A challenge for
everyone!
I really don't mind seeing a challenging target. But for the majority it
isn't the ideal. And since it's all of us pilots who make the contest a
contest I think a standard tape would be more accepted and appreciated.

Perhaps we should talk about Phoenix!
Where are the entry forms?? Will there be a contest in February?

Cheers
Charlie

[RCSE] F3J Team Selection!

2003-09-02 Thread Charlie Miller
I will have to disagree about the Juniors not flying enough.
The seniors didn't fly enough!
We had very poor weather for this contest. We know who we can blame for
that!
Phil decided at the pilots meeting that the Juniors would fly two rounds
between the Senior rounds. That's actually more than in past team
selections. If the weather would have been normal for this area, I think the
Juniors would have flown more rounds than ever in this event.
It was frustrating for all who attended. But I think Phil did well with what
he had to work with

Re: [RCSE] Aviomodelli VOR 250

2002-04-22 Thread Charlie Miller

Aviomodelli?
I have the Arriane. This is a motor glider. Same thing, duraflex fuse, foam
sheeted wings. Very nice kit to build! I had this about 8 years ago. At that
time I never flew an R/C glider before. So I can't say how they thermal.
I had a 40 size engine on it, and it flew very well, looked scale!! I
remember my final approaches were way out and low or it would over fly the
runway. So it had a really flat glide.
I put over 900 flights on it. I finally lost it when the elevator cable
broke loose, pulled to many G's and torn the rod out of one wing.. I still
have the wings.. And I acquired a new one through this exchange a few years
ago. So it will be built this year. (I hope)
This time I will put flaps for landing and camber for thermaling.. I think
it will perform a great deal better.
They also make a variety of wood models, and power models that have the same
duraflex fuse.. They look very scale that way...
I predict the VOR 250 will be a great flying ship..
Good luck!

Also thanks to Dave Darling for the glass of wine at the BBQ! It hit the

[RCSE] F3J And Thermals!

2001-05-19 Thread Charlie Miller

Good Morning!
Looking at what people are choosing to do with the new F3J rules.. I think
the safest tow would be a straight out tow.. I don't believe the tow will
have the energy of the conventional tow method.. But with the new lighter
weight ships out, They would do a bit better with a weaker tow.
There will be more time spent on the line, hence lower flight times. So who
cares!! All pilots will be on the same page!
The only problem I see is the creative tow tactic's. There is the opposite
tow, where the is an anchor man that runs twords the glider. and the pulley
man who runs away from the glider.. This can be a problem if something lets
loose.
According to the rules in our contest coming up in the rockies.. The CD
states that if you should do this type of tow, a saftey harness will be
attached to each towing device to the tow man. I don't believe this was
ever allowed in the original F3J tow rules. It stated hand tow..Hold it with
your hand!!! You couldn't use a harness of any kind! Well who is to decide
that if we do use the saftey strap. That the tow men aren't useing this
strap to actually tow?? Or will there be a certain amount of slack in the
saftey strap?? Will we trip over this slack?? I see this to be a kind of
Charlie Foxtrot!
F3J is very competative ! Pilots are going to push the limits to get into
the hunt! Or on the team! Or win the worlds! This could be where a saftey
issue could be a problem.. Trying a new method. Not a proven one!
If the new rules should stay in effect.. I would have to vote for only one
tow. Straight out! This is safe and its the same for everyone. As was the
original rule! There were no tricks other than just good tow men!
I will agree with the Germans.. This is insane as far as I am concerned..
There are sports that go on each and every day that involve injuries. This
sport is not a dangerous sport!!! If a protest should happen I would
support it!

Thermals Shmermals!!

The next thing we are going to say is that we understand women!

Thermals are a product of mother nature! And as we all know Mother nature is
very hard to figure out. Oh??? Maybe because she is a woman?? hahahha

I don't believe they rotate.. I have studied birds of pray for 16 years.
They don't have a preference in left or right. I see birds change direction
more than we do. I see some pilots get into a thermal and once we are locked
in, they tend to just keep it in the same turn... Birds on the other hand
move around much more.
I have flown full scale gliders for 14 years.. One flight I hooked a
thermal , and took it up several thousand feet..I was above a ranch that was
burning a pile of brush.. This smoke and smell stayed with me for several
thousand feet.. I decided I couldn't handle it anymore.. I ran to another
thermal, When looking back the smoke from this fire was just a straight
plume rising upwards. It wasn't rotating! Just rising like smoke from a
cigarette in an ashtray..

One gentleman was talking about a down wind turn in a thermal.. Once your in
a thermal, I don't belive there is a downwind.. But it could be a sink
turn..Flying half in lift. half in sink!

  Folks,
One of my professors (University of Maryland) is doing research on
small internal combustion engines (read model engines). The goal of the

   Apologies for non-glider related question.
Any and all help greatly appreciated,

Good Morning
Well My posts took two days to go through. I have
no idea why. I have been recieving posts, But not mine..
The subject of winch right of way is resolved
thanks to all who posted. Thanks for all the info!
In conclusion it was the fault of both parties. The
AMA rule does not apply in a non-contest situation. Common sence does
apply.
Thanks again!

Re: [RCSE] Rude ? Who?

2001-02-18 Thread Charlie Miller

To Whom It may concern
The deal is. That Friday before the contest there were winches set up at the
east end of the field... The turn arounds where near the landing zone..
Everything was ok, It wasn't the CASL guys.. This was the pilots
responsibility. Fo rthe most part it was working well. That is until some
pilot launched when my friend Gary was landing. The winch pilot didn't clear
the launch area.
He launched and ripped the Saphire just ahead of the tail. It was trash.. I
was surprised that the pilot that winched didn't even step up... At least
to say he was sorry...
He knows who he is.. And he will have that karma to deal with...

I guess a talk with the organizers of the SWC are in order. They
obviously should not set up so that the landing zones and landing
approach are directly through the launch area.

Or maybe they should just not allow 'rude' gentlemen to 'launch'. Or
 should that be 'land'

[RCSE] Right of way?

2001-02-18 Thread Charlie Miller

Good point on the rules Dick,,
Thanks
It was not an organized deal. I understand
that's a rule, But before I put one of my gliders in the air I would clear the
area..
In the contest I saw many times where the winch
master held up launching because of a glider trying to thermal low and in line
with the winches... Or the glider was simply trying to make it over to the
landing zone
This is good judgment!! And he took the
proper precaution to avoid a collision.
I think that people need to make exceptions to the
rules. and use some common since.
Rules are made by people Doesn't always mean
they apply in every case..
Charlie

[RCSE] Right of way

2001-02-18 Thread Charlie Miller

There are several questions concerning launch right
of way. I like to see this..
I do have to disagree with the flying plane having
a better view of the launch area. When flying, it isn't always easy to look
around when close to the ground.. While the launch pilot has time and can focus
down the line. He doesn't have to launch at a given time. The flying pilot
doesn't have the time. And he is committed to land.. In full scale, the
glider always has the right of way. The glider can't go around.
This isn't saying that model gliders should be
treated the same. But It is something to think about..
Who has the most options???
Another point I would like to make is that this has
nothing to do with a contest. This was the pilots that were out practicing.
There was no organization And it was crowded.
I chose to stop flying. It was just to
crazy.
So this was something I think all the pilots should
have been looking out for. Each other!!
The glider that got damaged was close to the end of
the winch line. and was low coming in.. I think if the winching pilot would have
been looking. He would have seen the glider approaching..
Like I said, It was very crowded. I had to be very
careful when launching on my short upstart I never launched until I was
certain that it was clear. Most of the time I would have to hold for a minute..

Also there were many gliders/handlaunch that were
flying over the winch lines. So people knew it was hectic.
I don't want to change the rules. But I think its a
good thing to bring up the awareness of what could happen.

[RCSE] Right of way

2001-02-18 Thread Charlie Miller

The rulebook rule was instituted to provide some orderliness to
apotentially chaotic situation. However, it only holds in
sanctionedcompetition. Non competition situations must rely on common
sense andgood judgment

Ok guys.. It seems like my posts are not going
through..
This whole thing has gotten out of
hand..
Look at the statement above!
What happened at the classic was not during
competition.
This was a practice! The rule does not
apply!! Common since does apply here.. The glider in question was in the
launch area near the turn around.. Not good judgment..
But so where many others. Again. Not good
judgment!
The pilot winching didn't clear the lines... Not
good judgment!!
I guess the thing that bothers me is the fact that
the pilot winching didn't even have the consideration to at least confront the
other pilot to say something! Like sorry about your glider I didn't see you ,,
Or anything.!!
I know we loose models in this sport. I think it's
a decent thing to show the other pilot some respect for the loss.
Not , oh well to bad, wasn't my fault!! And avoid
it all!!
Like I said. Its his karma.. Not mine!

[RCSE] Landings: a complete waste of time?

2000-12-18 Thread charlie

I think the landing is the hardest part! As in full scale soaring, the
landing aproach is a precision manuver. It's very critical! There is a
big penalty paid if you mess up!!
In soaring contests there are several cases where everyone will stay up!
The lift is everywhere... The precision landing aren't nessesarily DORK
landings. They are what you make them.. If your speed and pattern are
correct. It will be a nice low energy landing. I think the DORK landings
are a result of inproper speed. Going to fast makes a pilot drive it in
to hard. They have no choice, if they want landing points.. I try never
to have to drive a model in hard. Besides, the rules for unlimited are
very stricked. You can't loose a part on landing. You can't flip over!
In F3J european event!!! They are allowed to drive them in and destroy
them if they want.. As long as the nose cone stays on the tape, they are
ok!!
I think that makeing a low energy landing is a very hard thing to do
everytime with conditions the we deal with.. The models will take a
slightly hard DORK. But I have seen very hard DORKS.. There is no reason
for that... Well? Except for Visalia. Where they set up for down wind
landings.. Very different comared to what we are use to. But never the
less a challenge. And everyone is on the same page.
I think it is much better to master the landings than to change the
rules... There are many people who would like to see skeggs go away to..
If they do?? Fine!! I will learn to land with out skeggs...

Hey guys
Well yesterday I decided to go fly power.. I few guys from our glider
guys showed up also with the same idea... Well we couldn't just fly
power,, we had to start towing up the zagi.. with some kite string. no
releases!! Sounds kinda iffy hey??
Well it worked great.. we even towed up a ninga... I fixed the string to
the top wingbolt on my 5th scale cub. and to the nose of the gliders,,
when we got high enough. I went to idle, and the glider just overflew
me.
we just put the hook on the nose of the glider and used a ring...
Its fun to experiment

[RCSE] Nat's????

2000-08-04 Thread charlie

Good Morning
I had to cancel the Nat's two years in a row,, due to my demanding
buisness well when you own it , your married to it!!! I was bummed
both times,,, I know it's a good contest... Many of my flyin buddies
have informed me that i missed a good contest.. I believe them.
I think one of the things i missed about going, is meeting all the
pilots that frequent this exchange,, meeting the people who duke it out
on here. flying against them, and learning from all of themit's kind
of cool to associate faces with names,,, I was allways under the
impression that this contest was the big daddy of contests.. i know
visalia has more flyers in one category than anywhere.. but what i was
refering to is the fact that lots more people from all over would be at
the nats...because it's centrally located, more classes are flown. and
its for the national title
It has appeared to me that the national title hasn't much clout
according to some people,, well i don't agree with this... If you go to
the nats , you are flying against who ever comes for that title,, If a
pilot chooses not to show, and mabe challenge the title, then they don't
have much to say about that...seems like to some people the nats is a
little below them... I don't think we should let them take away from the
importance and fun of competing in the nats, or mabe AMA should use the
nats as a sort of stepping stone to USA team selections... I guess i am
curious why this isn't mabe a qualifyer?
I guess some people have to be dead nuts serious, and only go big or
stay home,, or go when it's convienent for them... but It;s like phoenix
in febuary,,, what a great contest,, lots of flyin, and for those of us
from alittle cooler climate,, a break from winter. after each day pilots
dig out thier electic stuff, throw lights on it, and fly untill they
feel like it... and the BBQ. you can hear people talking about how they
did, good or bad... pilots make this sport happen... all the
pilots...Nats pilots, phoenix pilots,,, visalia pilots,, southern
pilots.. we are all in the same boat... i think the clicks are
everywhere.. and that is natural... but we are all in it for the same
thing fun. and competitive soaring
I will see you all at the next Nat's... for sure!

Darn, it's been days since I spouted off about the race.
Sorry to keep you in the dark Kev.

New webpage has been created to keep everyone up to
date prior to the event. I will attempt to keep it current
everyday. It is dated so you can keep an eye on me...

http://home.fda.net/~craft/IF3F2K.htm

I will be adding the list of prizes to the page. If you do
not like the pilot order for some reason, keep in mind
I have several things to worry about...

1. keeping like frequencies at least 3 pilots apart.
2. keeping a nice spread for the pilots who are assisting
me with timing, scoring and safety officer duties (bless
them with good wind mother nature...)
3. keeping team mates (official or otherwise) apart so they
can assist each other during the competition.

Let's race...

[RCSE] shipping charges/ and Sal

2000-04-06 Thread charlie

just want to touch on the shipping charges thing. once i had a
aviomodelli motor glider, (very cool model) i lost the canopy. i still
flew it, looked like hell, but it flew. i finnally got tired of the
look. i couldn't find one anywhere. except in Italy.. so i managed to
order one (no one spoke english), the canopy was 12 bucks.. shipping??
50 bucks.. i was very happy to get it back on the model...
i guess no matter what you order, form whoever.. they have to charge
shipping. i have never really seen free shipping. well , if you have an
order that exceeds 100 bucks from tower, i think they ship for free.
but if your gonna order something really small, you may pay just as much
for shipping as for the part. oh well, thats the soaring business, if we
need it, we have to have it. sometimes it is a high price to pay. but it
keeps us flyin.
Sal? i suggest try him out... i have done a fair amount of buisness with
Sal. I have not had a problem. and if i did. well no one is perfect. and
when people mess up, the whinners get all over them... thats par. Sal
has a buisness that is totally geared twords us!!! yes there are other
places to get things. but it seems that everyone has something alittle
different. so we need to shop all of them on occasion...Give the guy
some credit for being there! the hobby buisness is a hard one.. It's
probebly the last buisness i would want to start. i have seen way to
many go under.. If i need something that Sal has,, i am going to get it
from him. and if he says it will cost 8 bucks shipping for a single
skegg. and i agree. then i am not going to fuss about it...
thats life!

I need some help troubleshooting my Hobbico Accu-Charger.
This is the "old" black box version - not the new peak
detector charger in a white box.

When I select discharge for my four cell flight packs,
the charger begins the discharge cycle, it continues for
5-10 minutes then switches to charge (indicating that the
packs are discharged to 1.05 volts per cell, and ready to
take a full charge). When I check the supposed fully
discharged packs, they read 5.3 volts. When I perform
the same discharge/charge cycle on my friend's identical
Accu-Charger, it indicates that the packs have over 200
minutes left (not 5-10).

I placed a DVM in the circuit with the pack while it was
connected to the unit. The pack reads 5.3-5.4 volts.
When I press the button to begin the discharge, the
voltage drops to 4.3 volts. I have cleaned the slider
switch that selects the number of cells (3, 4 or 5 cells)
with tuner cleaner.

Any suggestions from users of this unit or electrical
savvy fliers?

what is the diference between this two?

good morning
well if you were to look at them there isn't that much difference, the
standard zagi is alittle heavier than the boomerange,, you can get a
hand launch zagi that is very lite, but not advisable for combat.. i
have seen them come apart with a good whack the boomerange seems to
recover from a hit alittle better from what i have seeen we mix them
up with all the time and they are sure fun.. i don't think as a first
time wing person that you would be disapointed with either, i fly
boomerange,, just my preference.. thats all..

It was a puffy cumulus day, with cloud streets lined up all the way
from Mishiwaka to Wapakaneta. It got me thinking about how full size
sailplanes use the cloud streets, and how the streets form.
Are the open lanes between the lines of clouds running with the
 wind
   or cross wind?

Cloud streets run parallel to the wind, they really are obvious when seen from
 a visible satellite image. A HREF="http://nimbo.wrh.noaa.gov/"NWS western
 region images/A

Are those open lanes full of sink?

You bet your L/D ratio! Miles of sink in a long straight line.

  If you are going cross
country, do you fly down the lines or across the lines?

Fly along the lines, under the clouds, no circling. Something called
"dolphin flying" works well. This is slowing down (pulling up) in the best
 lift
and speeding up in weaker lift. Average speeds over 100 kts result in good
conditions. There is also an optimum angle to cross the streets for a given
lift strength and course leg distance and direction.

  What prinicipal of
   self organization causes cloud streets?

Wind velocity 20-30 kts, conditionally unstable air mass, relatively smooth
terrain (not the Rocky Mts, for instance).
Cloud streets can happen without clouds, too. Then they are called
"blue streets" and can be tough to identify. Picture yourself flying along in
 sink
for quite a distance, speeding up to get out of the sink, thinking there must
 be
big thermal just ahead, and this goes on for several miles. You are likely
parallel, and right in between the lift zones. If one realizes this and
 alters course
laterally before flying into the ground, the day is saved.

good explanation mark!!!
i have soared many cloud streets,, funny thing there, sometimes there is
lots of sink between the clouds,, sometimes moderate sink.. depends on
the day... once i flew my asw20, RR from ft summner new mexico to santa
fe.. 110 miles in about 55 minutes,, never turning..it was like you had
an engine :) that day was a 350 mile day...
i also think that if one was to go for a model cross country flight..
that the cloud street w ould be a great highway to take.. in colorado we
have cloud streets that go clear into kansas... as far as the eye can
see
blue thermals. or blue streets are very difficult to read... i have gone
several miles, loosing many thousand's of feet wondering where the next
thermal is? and then it hits you.. but it can be alittle nerve racking
if your far away, and you definatly need the lift to get home...
well happy soaring :)
