Re: [RCSE] Why RDS did not work for me... long
Oleg, I have used RDS in my scratch built 1/4 scale Woodstock for more than a year and they have performed flawlessly. I have also installed them on flaps and ailerons in my tow plane, and can get 90 deg. flap with no trouble. They move smoothly all the way down and up even when moved by hand. Certainly the positioning of the shaft must be correct to make it work, all I did was to put it together and do some trial and error then ground some flats on the shaft, nipped up the screws, hey presto, works great. Re: [FAIsoaring] Re: [RCSE] Re:Requiem for the Stake
Greetings, I haven't seen anything yet that prohibits the staking of the anchor-person to the ground. As long as there is no solid connection between the line and the stake it should be within the rules? A length of line around the waist of the anchor-person should hold. If that were allowed, would you still be able to "tow" with two people? If you took the third helper from the pilots side for the position of anchor, which is not towing, you could still use two to pull? But, I think the aim is to reduce deaths and the new rule should do that, though it might increase injuries. Lower launch altitudes will make the task tougher. The better pilot should have a clear chance to win. Differences in launch equipment will show up. Oh well, it is F3J. Dennis __ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Re: [RCSE] Landings: "a complete waste of time"?
Gentlemen, The answer is already in the rule book, it's been there for a long time. AMA TD is not just supposed to be a duration task with a landing option. The tasks are Duration, Distance and Speed. No, I'm not confusing this with FAI F3b! Look in your rule book, someone, at some time included a set of tasks other than precision/international/triathalon/whatever duration. AMA fliers don't like them, CD's and clubs don't run them and they're not even included in activities at the National Championships[except for the running of the F3b event]. If you think that these tasks have nothing to do with thermalling, think again! Talk all you want about landings determining the winner without including these skill and equipment related tasks and you will be missing he boat[plane]. Don't come up with, " There aren't enough people to run these tasks!" either!! If contestants can act as timers, they can count laps or click off a timed run on four laps! To use even one task other than duration as a "tie breaking" task in a contest would eliminate the "landing issue". Dennis FROM THE A.M.A. RULEBOOK: Radio Control Sailplanes Thermal Duration 11. Scoring-General. The intent of having multiple tasks available is not to select one(1) task and have a contest, but rather to use as many tasks as possible during each contest. Especially for contests of two (2) or more days, it is presumed that three (3) or four (4) tasks will be flown. --- John Dertine wrote: >There is a real easy way to improve the >contests with out resorting to the >non flying skill of the dork landing. >Make the flying tasks more >challenging. the problem is that the rules for most TD type events were >developed years ago well before optimized >modern ships were conceived. >I would submit that it is a comment on >the lack of incentive to change rules >to suit modern ship design. --- FRED SAGE wrote: > The reason for precision landings in AMA TD contests is to > determine the winner, or more specifically to identify the more > capable or proficient pilots. Re: [RCSE] Korea Mig Kill
Dudes, The following comes from a Skyraider website: OK, don't read the whole thing, here's the important part pulled out: >Years ago I picked up a paperback >(No, not God's Little Acre) titled >"The Air War in Korea". I made the >mistake of loaning it so I no longer >have it, but if I find another copy >I'll send more info. It had quite a >bit about the AD including the >acknowledgment of being >the first prop aircraft to shoot >down a jet, Mig-15 I think. So, who has a copy of "The Air War in Korea" and what is the date of this kill? Dennis - name: Jim Gardner email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: 6/1/00 Comments I always wondered if any one knew there was somebody inside the old AbleDog. I was proud to be a NAVY Combat Air crewman. I graduated from Aircrew school at Barbers Point, then VC35 sent me through there school in San Diego. Boy was I over trained. By the time we got aboard the Kearsarge the war, excuse me "Peace Action" was almost over. Looking back this was good, then it was bad. How could you be a Hero if there was no war? Boy how our outlook changes as we get older. Our cruise was a "Wait and see" sort of thing. It was so laid back we hosted the movie company, of "The Caine Mutiny" and "The Bridges of Toko-Ri". What a claim to fame. If you see "The Caine Mutiny" again, the opening scene, the carrier refueling the destroyer, that was the Kearsarge on the edge of a typhoon, no special effects. We did finally get to 'The Line', but after one tour we were sent on a Pacific Cruise, Hong Kong, The Phillipies, and on the way back we 'Postured' between Tiawan and China. I wonder if we will back them up next time. Back to Yokosuka and the 'YokoSuka Beer Hall', Ashi, Kirin, and Peace cigarettes. What great memories, and let's not foreget 'Baby San'. I noticed only AD4N's listed for VC35, I remember looking back in my log book, VC35 had everything from AD2Q, 3N, 4NL and other version I can't remember. That's memory for you. I'm not quite sure if some of the planes I logged weren't from VA-115 or not though. Maybe an old Crew Chief (plane captain) will check in with more accurate info. Years ago I picked up a paperback (No, not God's Little Acre) titled "The Air War in Korea". I made the mistake of loaning it so I no longer have it, but if I find another copy I'll send more info. It had quite a bit about the AD including the acknowledgment of being the first prop aircraft to shoot down a jet, Mig-15 I think. Also an episode at King 18, Something about an AD pilot bragging to an air force pilot he had enough power to take off with the wings folded. Hmmm, I believe it. I have the cruise book from my tour on the Kearsarge with a roster of Pilots and air crewmen from VA-115, VC3, VC11, and VC35. If your interested I can send it (the roster) to you. There are a lot of pictures of crews and aircraft that I could scan but I wouldn't know who to contact for authorization. Well I've bent your ear enough for now, but I've got to say, the AD was undoubtedly the best prop the Navy ever had. Best Regards, Jim Gardner (AT2CA) __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Of course I knew there were few RTF or even ARF in this class and I knew it wouldn't do or be everything. I left it open to hear from you guys. Here's how you stood: 2 fliers were very pro towards the Picojet Combat 2 fliers were very anti PJCombat 3 fliers were very pro Zagi 400 2 fliers liked both for their goods and bads. It's still a difficult decision for me. I really only wanted a plane to take on a camping vacation where the chance of good sloping has always been poor but where there are places to fly. It seems the hours needed to put together a Zagi are not a negative, especially if you're going to power it with a hot 400/400BB/480 and lots of cells, this is true for PJCombat also. Motor makes a big difference here, and I wonder how many PJCombat owners would like their plane if it had a better motor/battery combo? I'm still open but beginning to think that I should get both. That would mean that one would be ready for sure and in the future, I would always have a plane for "anything". Charlie, The Nat's is a stepping stone. F3h[Cross Country] fliers maintained their proficiency should a WC be run anytime. F3k[HLG] pilots, I hear, turned out for what has been reported once again as a fun and competitive day. For the F3j pilots its another "practice, practice, practice" session since they don't have to qualify for the team selection contest. The F3b event is run as a 2 round event making it a "qualifier" and there were three pilots that were unqualified going into the event, I think two were hoping to "Q". Neither qualified that day and I'm sorry we didn't have time to do absolutes after the event. but for the others, all going to the finals in Sacramento[and the Worlds?], it was good practice. Larry Mentioned over 100 volunteers - people will enthusiastically get involved when things are well prepared like they were at the NATs. Steve Kaluf seemed to be everywhere, bringing in and setting up equipment that was in top shape, taking care of a hundred items, and when the weather turned sour on us he was all over the radar getting us the best info available. Re:[RCSE] Pouring lead into tubes
Greetings, I recieved many interesting replies on this. The best results in pouring lead into larger diameter tubes come from filling the entire tube prior to cutting it into the smaller lengths. Oh well! Since I had already cut the tube up, I opted for the simplest fix and used a urethane glue to hold the lead into the sections. The end was then easy to machine clean. Now I have 40oz of ballast and a wing joiner 20oz heavier than the carbon one which should be enough. Thanks all for your input. Tracy, I don't have an airfoil plotting program, but I do have AutoCad. I can rotate the foil and make the profile proper for the blank. I can then put the angle in. Re: [RCSE] Hand catching in Major TD contests
Greetings, I think this is a BAD idea. I'm not a safety nut but...just think of few not so perfect catch attempts! The skegs end of this discussion began with the thought of planes sliding or flying low through the landing site. Not good enough, lets do it at 3-4 feet anywhere on the field. OK, limit it to a "spot" on the field, there are still planes flying through and no skegs to stop a bad landing approach here. I don't use skegs. Dennis Phelan = Dennis Phelan __ Do You Yahoo!? Re: [RCSE] New speed run record
Rich, The length of the course is 600 meters[656 yards or 1968.5 feet]. the average speed for the run is then 95.4 mph. Just like the "Indy 500", the time is determined according to a specified distance. A usual place to measure this is one foot out from the inside edge of the track. When you run a lap, they don't care if you're on the line or at the outside edge of the track. Everyone gets compared to the same official distance. Its the same in F3b and its how the average speed is found. It's up to the pilot how much or little space he'll use. Obviously he'll use more than the 600 meters, but someday the planes will get EVEN better and the speed through the course will increase as the distance traveled decreases. John Roe's example uses a total distance traveled that seems a bit high, it might be right if the plane entered the course at the top of its launch, usually there's a dive that cuts this. Other additions to the distance are the 3 turns. The curved path is longer than a straight path between the planes[base A and B] and it gets added to a shorter straight line measurement but is still longer than the 150 meter leg. Speed is a lot more than just getting the plane to go fast, it's about making the distance shorter and keeping the speed up, just like on the race track! Oops! I got sidetracked. --- "Kiburis, Richard A" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Does anyone know the length of the course === Dennis Phelan __ Do You Yahoo!?
