Re: [RCSE] Contests within contests

2008-08-04 Thread Denny Zech

We did that this year in
Fort Wayne. We have a woody class scored separably from unlimited,
while all fly together. However the woody flyers also are scored in
unlimited so you don't have to pick which class you are flying. Woody
flyers are flying in both contests. too early to tell but we have had
a few more flyers flying woody's staying for unlimited.

I am not sure if I posted this idea before, so if I did, give it another
thought in the context of the NATs discussions that have happened of late.
Has anyone tried contests within contests? We often have classes of flyers
segregated by level, but have we done classes of planes within a contest?

For example, you run a winch launched contest but capture who is flying
ailerons and who is flying RES. So you have an overall winner, an aileron
winner and a RES winner without having to run separate contests. Or maybe
you run Unlimited but capture the 2M planes as a class within the contest.

Has this been done? Seems it would not be all that hard with the right
computer software. It would seem to me that it would encourage more people
to fly. A person might feel outclassed with their 2M RES against Supras and
Pikes, but if they can be recognized in 2M or RES within the contest maybe
you get more participation. It will probably need some software revisions
but once that is done, the computer manages it. If you use an excel
spreadsheet type approach, then add a column for airplane class. You
register the pilot and the plane.

Stupid idea? Great idea? My experience is limited here so I don't know
what has been tried.

Best regards,
Ed Anderson

[RCSE] OVSS Fall Round Up Day 1

2006-10-09 Thread Denny Zech
What a great weekend of soaring in Muncie! Saturday's contest started
at 10:00 a.m. and we finished up just a few minutes before 6:00 p.m. We
flew 7 rounds, first round a warm up of 10 minutes (in launch and hang
in very light stuff), then 6 rounds of 13 minutes. It was tough early,
fairly easy midday, and tough from 4:30 on, (ask the top 2 groups which
were really shuffled about, except for the top 2).

Rich Burnowski came out on top with 7492 points. Paul Sherman second
with 7462 points. Bill Wingstedt was third, followed by Ron Kukral and
Jack Strothers. Top Sportsman was Ron Allen who finished 11th overall.
We had one flyer complete their 15 minute LSF II task flight. We in
LOFT allow flyers going for LSF tasks to declare and then set a new
target task for them (in this case 16 minutes) and normalize off that
time. Everyone cheered when Lee touched down 1 second off, and with a
level 2 landing.

28 flyers in 4 flight groups kept the day busy. Thanks to all the
midwest guys for supporting OVSS. A more fun group to fly with you
won't find anywhere!

Complete results from both days will be on the website later this week.

I chose to 'test' airplanes today as my focus. Took the Sharon, Giant
and Supra to fly. OVSS allows the use of any amount of planes you
want...very cool for tuning and testing.

The conditions were huge, huge up and huge down...so if your model
couldn't get out of its own way you were dead.

I started with the Sharon for a maxx, then the Supra, then the Giant ,
etc, in continuous rotation...not by airfoil or span or any other
consideration. I stayed in the second to top group til the second to
last round where I moved up to top group but made a left on a hunch
but couldn't stay with the air (sky as too blue and I kept loosing
site) so dropped a bunch of time.

The last flight was with the Supra, I ran down wind in real smeg, hit
a boomer and was wrapping up and down like a nut... I gained to about
500' but was too far away for comfort and decided to come back.

I was totally perplexed because I just couldn't get up and out in that
thermal inspite of the fact it was huge..kept on stalling out on the
come around part of the turn.
So I headed back and it was not penetrating I pushed in a bunch
of down trim and got here to come backI hit some more bubbles that
should have been an easy up and away but the same thing...always
stallingand coming back was still ugly.

Finally when I got close enough to seeyep...right from the launch
I had accidentally pulled my landing flap stick half way down

Damn! So only got 9:57 and a 79out of 10 :-)

This Supra is sooo nimble and so capable to get out of sink and over
to something new, and does it ever indicate! On its first flight we
shot gun launched and everyone flew right thru lift, almost right off
the pingbut the Supra just popped its tail, littlerally yelling
Hey Dummy, TURN!.

[RCSE] Loft Contest - Mike Remus Rememberance

2005-10-18 Thread Denny Zech
The LOFT club will be having our last contest of the year this Sunday
October 23rd at the Salomon Farm field in Fort Wayne. We will be using
this contest also as a wake for longtime member Mike Remus who passed
away last month. We will be running an open winch contest, longest 4
flights counting with a max flight time of 15 minutes. This format is
really just an excuse for all of us who knew Mike to get together and
remember him. We will be cooking hamburgers and hotdogs throughout the
day for anyone who would like to attend.

Flying begins at 9:30 and will probably run until 3-4 in the afternoon.
Fly as much or as little as you like. 2 classes, 2 meter and unlimited,
both will run all day long. Peg will be at the field sunday to say hi
to everyone.

The contest is open to anyone who wants to fly with us, just show up and
have fun. That's what Mike wanted.

See you there!

Re: [RCSE] pop offs...not good, rule worse

2005-06-09 Thread Denny Zech

Gordy,

I can see your points on line breaks, but pop offs are almost always in
the polots control, like landings. It takes some small amount of skill
to launch successfully, just like landing on the spot. If someone has
their plane optomized for max launch and wind changes slightly, or their
technique is off, they get a low launch. Sort of like they didn't set
up properly and missed their landing (although not as great of point
penalty).

I fly OVSS with a lot of good flyers, and most of us have fun even when
not leading. There were a lot of top flyers down around my placing even
without popoffs, and I still saw smiles on their faces coming back from
the landing area (although not always immediately after a low launch,
but some guys are unhappy after blowing a landing and the contest is
also over for their chance of winning).

Pop Offs have been reflown at our contests when judged to be equipment
malfunctions, but just because a pilot yells equipment malfunction
doesn't mean it wasn't pilot error.

I can still remember my first NATS like it was yesterday. I know a few
people and had not a clue what was going on. I was in flight group 1,
and got winch 1. I was the first launch and was I nervous. I was on
the line for maybe a second before coming off, but it was one of my
favorite NATS when all was said and done. Got to meet a lot of people
and make friends for life.

At our club contests, we have been know to let sportsmen refly popoffs
(they are sportsmen after all and we want them to have a good experience
and get a lot of flying done). At the big contests, come and have your
A game or you will finish back in the pack, pop off or not. Miss a
landing and watch your score drop. It's sort of the same to me.

Good Lift!

The decision was too bad so sadand I made it known that I believe

And it makes sense that rules cannot be overruled by common sense or

If the rules get changed to consider 'fun' chaos would reign and the
general pilot group would be delayed from getting home or another
round being flown.

Okay so I am pretty much against the no pop off rule, but I'm not
CDing and I do appreciate all the work and excellent effort by the
guys CDing events. My travels make it impossible for me to commit to
taking on the responsibility so what I think is not a criticism of the
coordinators and CDs, rather it is a belief that it is wrong to kill a
pilots contest because of a popoff or broken line.

The unnamed, mysterious 'them' (you know those guys who would abuse
the lack of penalty to use either as a strategic advantage...but I
have never met in all my travels soaring) who are spoken of when the
no popoff or line break rule is justified,,,never win anyway. But to
protect us poor honest guys against the deadly threat of losing a shot
at the wood because some sneaky smart guy manipulates a delayed launch
to see where the air was found by us honest guysokay pretty stupid
stuff :-)

We all take time from family and responsibilities, spend cash on food,
gas, motels and chance the wrath of wives, only to get burned by fate
and the no pop off or line break rulewell its not fun for anyone
when it happens to anyone of us.

I have yet to be at a contest with a no pop off, and a guy popped off,
where if the entire group were polled, all would say no relaunch.

But rule or no rule, the OVSS has likely the most exciting and
challenging format of all I have been involved in. Seeded Man on Man,
both sucks and is great. Its format causes every single pilot, flying
or in the pits to be interested and involved as the rounds develop.
It is pro active to the ultimate degree and its very exciting. Its
the most fair format and the most unfairso like having one foot in
a fire and the other in ice, mostly things are great in the middle of
it all :-)except for the no pop off/line break rulethat's not
goodbecause when it happens to someone of our friends, it sucks
the fun out of the day and voids the result as being a 'man on man'
result.

I won't ever agree that its justified or good for the hobbybut
I'll continue to enjoy the events and respect the people doing the
work and making the decisions.

round cutouts in the wing and I remember someone used to make a drop in

[RCSE] 2m Laser wing rod

2005-02-13 Thread Denny Zech
Help,
Anyone out there who hates 2 meters have a spare wing rod for a laser
they want to get rid of? I need one so I can fly in our ten 2m contests
this year. .350 dia, 18 long 5-10 degree. I'll even take one from
someone who likes 2m ;-) .

Step up and help a fellow 2m flyer! (Although I really like flying my

Darwin Garrison wrote:
Hi, Guys:
At last Sunday's annual meeting of LOFT, I volunteered to CD a 1.5
meter Thermal Duration Contest. There's already been a big upsurge of
interest locally, and I absolutely want to let everyone on this list
know it's happening.

At this point there's a lot of unknowns, but I will update info pretty
quickly. What I do know is the following:

All planes 1.5 meters or less in span.
Contest format is man-on-man.
There will be an unlimited class and a woody class, but whether
they'll fly together or separate is unknown at this time. I'm leaning
toward together right now, with a separate set of woody trophies
given regardless of finish in unlimited.

Launch will be via Skybench mini-histarts stretched to 7 pound pull.
Rounds will pit four pilots against each other.
Scoring for unlimited will be by last man standing, i.e. first man
down gets a 1, second a 2, third a 3, fourth a 4.

Because of the separate awards, Woodies may have to have some sort of
timer. We may use a single timer for all pilots in a round.

I'm looking to peg entry fees at $5 for the day. We'll do the
frequency board thing so that we can mix anyone into any round.

Anyway, I'll be firming things up in the next couple of days, along
with an entry form on the LOFT site (assuming it gets fixed soon).
Now's the time to comment and recommend. Please feel free to share
your thoughts.

Regards,
Darwin

[RCSE] Contest landings

2004-09-27 Thread Denny Zech
All this talk about landings has my head spinning. What about
launching? Some people launch higher than others. Is that a true test
of soaring if you get an advantage right off the start? ;-)
Eliminating landing scores except as a tie breaker does nothing to the
root question. How did you get more flying time getting rid of
landings? Don't forget your timer isn't allowed to count down the last
10 seconds of a flight (a rule broken more often then kept). Flying man
on man has resulted in our club getting more flights per contest than
the open winch rules we used to use. Call up is even worse as you are at
the wim of the lift/sink cycles.

Solution is long task times, which also hurts beginners by causing fewer
rounds flown and the sportsman who only flys 2 minutes of a task is
going to sit and wait until the next round regardless of how you you score.

Come this weekend to muncie, fly OVSS style man on man! More important
have FUN! I'll be there to fly whatever Tom and Jerry come up with, and
be happy for the opportunity to finish in the middle of the pack (I
don't practice launching, landing, or flying enough) and enjoy the
companionship of 30-40 other flyers who might feel like me, or maybe
not, but I will be the one with the smile on my face, waiting for the
chance to accidently bury a group of flyers even if I don't nail the
landing or the launch
