Re: [RCSE] Contests within contests

2008-08-04 Thread Ed Whyte

Ed and All.
This is an idea that is already done in some of the Auto Racing venues.
There are several Auto classes all racing at the same time. Makes for a
great race.
The only problem I can see with this approach is if there are two or three
classes each modeler would have to decide which ONE they would like to
complete in. At smaller contests there are usually multiple class entries.

Subject: [RCSE] Contests within contests

I am not sure if I posted this idea before, so if I did, give it another
thought in the context of the NATs discussions that have happened of late.
Has anyone tried contests within contests? We often have classes of
flyers

segregated by level, but have we done classes of planes within a contest?

For example, you run a winch launched contest but capture who is flying
ailerons and who is flying RES. So you have an overall winner, an aileron
winner and a RES winner without having to run separate contests. Or maybe
you run Unlimited but capture the 2M planes as a class within the contest.

Has this been done? Seems it would not be all that hard with the right
computer software. It would seem to me that it would encourage more people
to fly. A person might feel outclassed with their 2M RES against Supras
and

Pikes, but if they can be recognized in 2M or RES within the contest maybe
you get more participation. It will probably need some software revisions
but once that is done, the computer manages it. If you use an excel
spreadsheet type approach, then add a column for airplane class. You
register the pilot and the plane.

Stupid idea? Great idea? My experience is limited here so I don't know
what has been tried.

Best regards,
Ed Anderson

When sitting around discussing a new or different sailplane design,

often one will hear phrases like, It launches like a __. Or, It
ranges out like a _.

Or, It hangs like a _. Or even, It lands like a _.

Once a sailplane is mentioned in one of those scenarios, that

sailplane becomes a benchmark.

Here is a possible list of benchmark sailplanes through the years:

2006-09-21 Thread Ed Whyte
Darwin, please ping me back.
As a side note to Simon's comments which are correct. It should be noted
that when the Nylon parts are injection molded the Nylon Pellets or Granular
have to be as dry and void of moisture as possible to prevent gassing in the
molds. This is why injection molding can not use old nylon parts for regrind
and recycle. When Top Flite Models closed up shop in Chicago there were
several hundreds of Nylon Props than went to the land fill.

 Technically:

 - nylon is hygroscopic by nature
 - there is no appreciable increase in modulus
 - boiling is no more efficient at the hygroscopic process than just
immersing
in room temperature water, and could actually purge existing H2O.
 - the process of re-absorbtion takes days/weeks

As a side note, towline used for F3J is best left immersed when not in
use...

Yes I have seen servo arms break. I broke a couple in my F3B ship on a
ballasted landing at base B... its hard to tell sometimes how much speed
you are carrying when you are 150m away.
Anyway, I also broke a couple on the slope during combat. I started
using the Kimbro servo savers. But boiling makes good sense.

Advantage they are more flexible, don't deform.. It doesn't mean you
won't break it, your just giving yourself some flexibility to avoid the
  break.
  Everything has a breaking point.

Subject: [RCSE] Some thoughts on the Nats

I just got back from another week at the Nats and want to share a few of
my thoughts. Nothing about who did what in which event, the ever-changing
Muncie weather, etc. but more about some of the background stuff.

AMA has provided a first class site. The field was in great shape and has
matured into a wonderful venue to hold the Nats. My only complaint is the
schedule shift that caused hand launch to move to the leading Friday, and
the prospect of more schedule shifting in the future. The lack of a regular,
fixed set of dates makes it very difficult for the 100+ competitors that
come to the Nats to plan, and having events across two weeks makes it tough
for working types that have to use vacation to participate.

Nostalgia was not flown this year. I hope this doesn't become the next
casualty event. Time was found for XC and Scale aerotow, even though Scale
aerotow only had a handful of participants. Doesn't the history and
evolution of modern soaring deserve better than half a day once every two or
three years?

I can't say that I personally like what RES has evolved into. Its now an
event for hand launch airplanes on steroids (the AVADannySoprano and
clones). The older, traditional RES planes compete at a serious
disadvantage.

The new winches provided by the hard work of the LSF working with AMA were
fabulous. They are McAnn (sp?) winch kits, with first class foot switches,
turnarounds, etc. The Real Balls bearing ends were recovered from the old
winches and installed on the new ones. A couple of brushes were burned
during the week, but overall they worked very well.

My heroes of the Nats. Everyone hears the names of the people that run
the various work areas (impound, flight line, scoring, etc.) at the pilots
meeting and banquest. There are lots of others that really make the event
work. Six really impressed me this year, three in impound whose names I
never learned, one in scoring, and two in my area at the flight line. The
impound folks who worked with Marna tirelessly and skillfully got the
transmitters into groups, kept the flow of pilots moving, and checked
everything back in to do it again. In scoring was a lovely lady by the name
of Barb Steifel. She has been at the Nats supporting her husband Jeff for
years. She always is working, either at impound or this year, in scoring.
At the flight line Brent Hoover has been coming for years and spends almost
all of his non-flying time helping tap lines, fix lines, setting up and
tearing down. This year he also took over running the line when all of the
primary flight line directors were
not available. Tom Koszuota is another who showed up for the first time 3
or 4 years ago and offered to help. Now he is flying the events and has
become a regular out on the flight line working whenever he isn't flying.
These 6 people are my Nats heroes, they are the ones that make it a
priviledge and a pleasure to keep going back and spending my Nats vacation
week working the flight line and supporting the Nats. We need more of these
selfless individuals who are willing to work without complaint, simply
because it is there and needs to be done.

Re: [RCSE] Re: Beginner Sailplane recommendation

2006-05-28 Thread Ed Whyte

Ok, lets get down to the two standards of the
industry for a trainer.
First off it should be recognized that building the
glider will teach the beginner most of the basics and give him or here the
knowledge of what to look for in a future kit or RTF.
The Lee Renaud / Airtronics Olympic II and the
Olympic 650, I believe have been used to get more glider pilots started in the
right direction. They are inexpensive easy to build fly great and can be
repaired if something should go wrong. The Oly II is larger has better
visibilityand is a little more forgiving than the 2 Meter 650.

The Oly II is available from Ray Hays at www.skybench.com the Oly 650 will be
available shortly from www.aerosphereonline.com

I see it now, the suggestions are going to
keep escalating to higher-performing and more expensive planes. Forgetting
that the user is going to be a youngster first-timer. And
suggesting slope oriented planes for thermalling seems weird to me. Not
that it's impossible, but because it makes little sense to me in the context
of the target user. Very inexperienced newbies I know of tend to need
lightweight gasbag planes, and preferably poly ships that are as stable as
possible. You guys seem to forget that most of you are elite flyers and
high performance ships are your normal stock in trade. I work the lower
end myself, and am quite happy with 2-meter 2-channel poly floaters with
inexpensive gear. I think that that direction is a good one for beginners as
well. If you put an EPP nose on a Gentle Lady fuse and traded the GL
wing for one with an EPP leading edge, carbon tube spar and main cores of
styrene, I think you'd have my perfect trainer.

Re: [RCSE] Re: Hobie Hawk wing rod

2005-11-11 Thread Ed Whyte
Hey Tom and All.
Tom you need to get your facts straight before you make statements about
other companies products. Don Richmond and Whyte Wings sell aluminum and
steel joiner rods YES.
However the aluminum is NOT 6061 HT6 IT IS 7075 T651.
The fact is 6061 HT6 is not stiff enough for the types of models we sell and
supply joiners for.
That's my 2 cents for tonight.

We also have wing rods in either .25 or .375 solid carbon or 6061 T6
aircraft aluminum. We purchase the .375 in long lengths and can cut to
any length required. This is the same material sold by Don Richmond at
HiLaunch who also caries these in sizes up to .5. For a 100 sailplane,
the .375 would handle hard launches and zooms.

They are bendable so dihedral can be set using these, but will not take
a permanent set under wing loading of hard winch launches and will
return to their original dihedral angles if any after the loads return
 to normal flight regimes.

Specifically, where can one get the one's that have netting opposite the
  rip-stop chute??

I bought two chutes from Johnny Berlin at the Nats that had netting as you
 described.

Re: [RCSE] Resolution by Ed Whyte

2003-07-14 Thread Ed Whyte
Hi Gene and All:
The tow hook location on the plans is the one that has been used to start
test flying. After you are comfortable with the launch you may move the hook
back a small amount. Using the stock position will result in near straight
up launches, you will want to keep a nice tension on the winch line to keep
the speed up. With the spoilers set to open to an angle of 70 degrees the
RESolution will come out of a thermal at a comfortable speed. When using the
spoilers you should apply some up elevator to maintain a slow forward speed
with an increase in the sink rate. As far as the performance think of the
RESolution as a laid back comfortable, easy flying Sapphire. Best of luck
and have fun. EW.

I am completing an RES Resolution by Ed Whyte. He has been a lot
 of help.
Will someone please offer me a bit of information about their
experience with the placement of the tow hook, use of the spoilers
and general information about their flying experiences with the
 Resolution?
All postings on the list and privately will be sincerly
 appreciated.
  Thanks.

Re: [RCSE] Where can I get a good Stylus strap?

2000-02-08 Thread ED WHYTE

Hi Paul and All:
If you are looking for a good wide strap try your local Guitar store. The
straps the rockers use make great TX neck straps.

I've heard someone makes a good Strap for the Sylus
(better than the Stock Airtronics strap that comes with the unit).

I think it was Hobby House, or something, but I lost the address.

 Ideas?
