Re: [RCSE] About CDs collecting model information

2008-07-02 Thread Lee Cox
At our Gamblers Gala contest in North West Nevada we just put a space for
plane flown
on the score card and the landing judge would refuse to sign the card if they
had not filled it in! Most of the computer scoring programs have or can easily
add this space near channel or pilot number?? The score kepper adds it along
with scores! This way the plane and pilot are connected and easy to find...
Not really a big thing to keep Gordy happy

At the Gateway Open we requested this info on the pilots' sign-up sheet. Alas,
most left the space blank -- including Gordy. We'll do it again this year, so
everybody will have another chance. If we get enough responses, I'll post the
tally here.

However, for this year's F3J WC all the info is available, as has been posted
earlier, and I would agree with those who find it to be very interesting indeed.

  Dear R/C Pilots and Friends,

The Gamblers Gala Contest that was scheduled for July 12th 13th 2008 has
been cancelled. It was cancelled for numerous reasons. Sierra Silent Soarers
club only consists of 16 members. As I’m sure you all know, putting on a large
two day event takes a lot of effort from everyone, and we just do not have
available manpower to conduct an event of this size this year.

As in most clubs the membership is made up mostly of senior aged pilots. I
turned 70 this year and feel that the amount of work required to run a quality
event of this type would be too much of a strain.

We are also concerned about the overall economy and the high price of gas
which is expected to keep going up. Some of you have to travel a long distance
to get here.

I and the S3 members very much appreciate your participation in the past
years, and we will miss having you come to Nevada and fly with us. I hope to
see you at one or more of the other events in California this year.

  Sincerely,

them to all be the same?? do they have to be under a load when checking them?

CC: Soaring@airage.com

Mike Smith pretty much hit the nail on the head. The problem isn't the
line. The problem isn't the size of the model. Our TD style winches are
unnecessarily strong. I'd love to see the winches restricted at major
contests.

I'm always going to fly large wingspan models at an UNLIMITED thermal
duration contest. I like the way they perform. Period. Sorry, but my
newest model is 3.9M or 153.5. It wasn't designed for F3J. It was
designed for US style UNLIMITED thermal duration.

I often hear CD's complain about guys launching hard. I understand your
need to keep the contest moving. But blaming the competitor for being
competitive U... it's a CONTEST!!! We're competing. You can't
expect a competitor to back off on his competitive spirit. He needs to
be allowed to do whatever he feels he needs to do to gain a competitive
advantage.

Using the line as the weak link is not only unfair, it's dangerous.
Limiting winch power is a great way to guarantee winch equality across
the board. Visalia's winches are unbelievably weak, and they have very
few line breaks. SWC winches are usually pretty strong, but are
inconsistent from one winch to the next, and change over the course of
the day. The NATS has the strongest winches I've ever used, and they use
rope line to keep things going. I know... the darn things ruined a
perfectly good Insanity.

Don't limit the models. Don't limit the line size or perceived breaking
strength. Limit the available winch power, and you'll begin to see
models optimized for that available power.

Hi Shawn,

I don't think anyone has long music wire...

Try a weld shop. I have used weldingwire. normally a weld shop will give you 15 feet or so. it comes in different diameters and is not hard to straighten out enough to work. I have used it on a couple of different planes.

Re: [RCSE] PCM failsafe - which position?

2005-04-10 Thread Lee Cox

This is a point that I have been lookingfor an answerfor also.

My question Why would it not be better to have your plane go to full flaps and a little rudder if you loose contact??? That would let you know immediately that something is wrong and keep the plane in a safe flight mode and close ???

Why use a PCM receiver if you don't use the failsafe?? I have heard a lot of pilots don't??

Hi Bill,

check out the red scrip for answers to your comments

The area has some good mountains. And you can find a slope in lots of places. The closest site I can recommend to your area is: http://www.ncws.com/rcrock/sites.htm Red Rock in Reno is a good slope. Red Rock. north of Reno is about as good as it getsSome times you can get to the top of a ski slope, I think this happens at Heavenly, and slope the ski slopes! Heavenly is overlooking Tahoe, I have friends that work up there and can find a good spot??But these may be too far from the lakes you mentioned. Regardless, bring something durable (lots of rocks) for light lift. The mountain winds can be fairly soft. Naturally, stronger winds do happen but not as often as many think. Washoe lake lake has a couple of good site that can be awesome with the right wind direction. there is another on hwy 89 just east of Caples Lake when the wind is coming up the hill and not from
behind?Exploration is the key. Bill, How come I haven't received your entry in our first annual thermal duration contest July 19th. and 20th.??? here in Gardnerville Nevada

[RCSE] Multiplex Milan

2003-01-05 Thread Lee Cox
For those interested in the Milan ? Neal wrote a Article for SE magazine on the Milan. It is in the September 2001 --- Vol .6, No. 7 and I just happen to have a pre-covered NIB Milan 4 sale. $325.00
Neal Capener [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Andy,

Set the Milan up excactly as the instructions recommend. Buy a metric ruler if you have to.
Don't balance on your fingertips and guess the cg.
Replace the 5 mm nylon wing hold down bolts with aluminum bolts. The nylon bolts shearing off in flight is not a pretty sight
Don't fly too slow at the beginning. Once you are used to the Milan you see there is plenty of warning before tip stalling,... so keep up the speed.

Regards,
Neal

[RCSE] Finishing a glass wing??

2001-07-10 Thread Lee Cox

I would like to hear some of the pros and cons about
whether or not the edges of the ailerons / flaps
back side of wing should be finished or left as open
foam.
It seems to me that if edges are sealed with
(glass-epoxy or?? )it would structurally be a stronger
wing and would help to stop any twist. I see a lot of
wings unfinished. HELP!!! LEE

[RCSE] Stylus manuals....???

2001-02-07 Thread Lee Cox

Don Edberg wrote a programming manual for Futaba,
and it's great! Is there any one that wrote one one
the Stylus Most instruction manuals by the
manufactures are not easy to understand.???

--- Barrett Stridiron [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
On the plus side, having the manuals available
 online is a powerfull sales
 tool.
People can check out the manual and drool over all
 the cool features. This
 gets
them excited and ready to buy the radio.

On the minus side, if the manuals are poorly written
 and confusing, people
might just be turned off your product. The Stylus
 manual isn't that bad,
but it can certainly use some improvement.

Ever read the manual for Futaba's 9Z radios? Gave
 me a headache... I swear
they just translated the original engineering notes
 from Japanese and put a
binder on it! (They don't publish these online
 either.)
