There's a good reason why 8 (almost 10) of our top pilots went to

Checkout these websites for info:

f3jturkey.com, soarist.com and f3x.no

This W/C is the most impressive contest I've ever seen. The Turkish
club spared no expense to make their mark: tents that are more like
semi-permanent housing, security so good that you can leave your
models assembled on the field overnight, WiFi on the field, WiFi
scoring . Your official timer enters the result on a PDA and by the
time you turn your transmitter back in, you score is posted on all the
big screen TV's on the field for all to see (which could be a source
of pride or shame :), as well as the current leader board. This is a
world class performance by the Turkish organizers with a world class
budget of over a quarter million dollars. They clearly had lots of
support. The US Team is prepared to deliver its own world class
performance largely because of your support. Jim Monaco continues his
own world class performance as team manager. Things are going smoothly
and close to budget, but fund raising will continue to be a full time,
year-around effort. We appreciate your support (and we still need to
get our models home after the contest, and that's not cheap :) Check
out the above websites for the latest news. The W/C starts Monday with
opening ceremony Sunday evening. Gotta go, I'm off to work (yes, it
really is a lot of work-14 hr days)

Thanks

Re: [RCSE] WAG contest.. The real Story :-)

2008-06-17 Thread S Meyer

You should have had Gordy fix your brakes for you. :-)

Craig Allen wrote:

Gordy only told part of the Story

I talked Gordy into flying in the WAG contest the Friday before the
IHLGF... I brought 3 planes with me, so I figured what's the worst
that could happen...He could destroy one of my backups... No big deal
:-) Well on the way to the field my brakes failed and I had to take a
turn really fast... Like a 40mph U turn :-) Well that shifted
everything in the van and broke my #2 planes boom... So now I'm down
to 2 planes. Still no big deal if Gordy destroys one.. Right... So I
show up at the field and Gordy is itching to fly..

I pull out the plane check that everything works and give it a toss..
Straight up.. No control.. Straight down.. Well kind of... Through the
telephone lines and into Bruce Davidson's rental car... Someone was on
my frequency!!! :-(((

So now I'm down to ONE plane If U have ever flown in the IHLGF its
almost impossible to go all weekend with just one plane... Shit
happens :- hehe

So now I'm like... Crap.. But oh well who cares? Not me :-)

I gave Gordy my word and that's more important to me... So I hand
Gordy my ONLY plane and let him go at it... For not being A
Hand-launch Guy he had a decent launch.. He flies the crap out of
it.. Like he's been flying it for years... He even new how to handle a
Futaba 9C transmitter...H???

In the back of my mind I'm figuring something is going to happen..

Well it did..

Gordy using a plane he had only 20-30 min of flying time on kicked
some serious ass... He was 5th going into the fly-offs...The only
reason he didn't do well in the fly-offs was the weather conditions
really deteriorated, the sun was almost down, and lift was
non-existent.. It became a who can launch the highest and cover
contest...

How did I do with the very same plane? Not so good... All these years
I thought I lived in the State of California.. But now I realize I
live in the State of Denial!!!

My flying sucks :-))

I know some of you who have never meet Gordy probably think he really
lives is in his mothers basement or a Mental Institution making up
stories on the Internet about flying all over the world... Well as
much as I hate to say it... Gordy really is a good stick and a good
ambassador for our hobby

Thanks very much to everyone that has made this fundraising campaign as
successful as it has been. We are about 1 week away from departure now and
getting very excited! We are still working towards the final $3000 need to
balance our budget. Your generous sales and contributions have raised about
$2000 in the last 2 weeks. This is phenomenal… We recently were made aware
of an accounting problem from the AMA and it added about $800 to our
fundraising needs. We are putting a final push on to close the budget
deficit.

We will continue to take raffle sales through our return on the 8th of July.
The following Saturday the 12th of July we will draw the winners. We will
be closing all merchandise sales on Friday 6/20/2008. We still have a large
stock of tee shirts short/long sleeve, pockets and not. We wanted to offer
free shipping on any in-stock order, but it was too hard to manage the
inventory, SO we are offering FREE shipping on all new orders placed now
through next Friday. We will ship all in-stock orders before we leave. Any
order with items not in stock will be ordered from the printer but will need
to wait for our return to be fulfilled.

Now is the time to help our budget, help us clear out some inventory and get
a great deal.

Don’t forget the great raffle. It is actually a better source of income for
the team as every dollar goes directly to the team, With the merchandise
sales we make about $7-$10 on each item on average and it is a lot more
work.

The team is well prepared to compete hard for the World Championship. Your
support had made it possible for us to get this far. Please look at our

this campaign possible.

going to be another glorious day. So it was off to Poway.

I stopped at the 7-11 and picked up some ice. I thought that

if I stuck my hands in the ice, I could get close to the feeling
of flying in Louisville or Chicago! It didn't work as the 77
degree temperature warmed my hands before I could launch.

About three hours of air time in about 4 hours at the field

with the Supra, Rogue 2.0, Blaster and E Blaster. I only had a
high start as the winch motor is being refurbished, but the Supra
and Rogue did not seem to care. Thermals were plentiful with
plenty of 10 minute flights and a few good landings.

Another beautiful day in Southern California.

The Supra has come a long way baby :-) With the help of all of us.
Wing bolt mount pod changes, longer bolts, wing sub rib changes, layup
changes, and both the aileron link insert and now flap inserts
too...and lets not forget that now the ailerons go all the way to the
tips...they are lighter now and stiffer too on the current batch of
wings coming to Barry's den of storage.

A short while back, well maybe a year or so, it was pretty clear that
the area where the aileron inserts were mounted and how they were
mounted needed to be changed for linkage geometry and durability, you
can tell the new version because the hump is a bit taller.

Those of you who hit the landing spot too hard like me, find pretty
soon a bubble in the skin around the flap inserts on top. And the
flaps not moving together and a lot of slop too. You glue it and glue
it but in the end like Don the answer is to put carbon horns in the bottom

The new wing has a far more durable link insert for both the ailerons
and flaps.

Mine? I think I have one more gluing left before I switch over to
bottom horns :-)

RE: [RCSE] Contest Format

Is it the type of Society or contest formats that are changing the
competitive soaring environment? Overall USA Club
membership/participation is down.

From my perspective the Europeans have more vacation time and
spendable income than USA residents have experienced in over 30
years. Remember when the 40 hour work week was standard? And most
had 4 weeks vacation by the time they were 30.

Perhaps more science needs to be taught in school? Perhaps too much
emphasis on sports and not education? Soaring geeks in the USA just
don't rank high on the celebrity list.

I think many of the answers and solutions are rooted deep in the
economic and social threads of our society. The USA is losing it's
position in the world. We have to just follow now.

Steve Meyer

At 11:00 AM 1/11/2008, Tom Copp wrote:

Wow lots of stuff here.

In general contests outside the USA are well attended. Contests attendance
inside the USA is diminishing. Why?

Outside the USA they typically fly F3J or a local version of F3J with F3B
winches that the pilots supply btw. They are strict about being on the line
in time; they don't soften the task for anyone. They play hardball over
there and their attendance is thriving.

Inside the USA most of our formats are the same since the late 70's while
our models have evolved over the last 30+ years the contests have not. Our
attendance is shrinking, we give in to a sandbagger, and we don't want to
change anything to keep the pilots we have coming back. We don't push
ourselves to try anything new and learn something. Sure the new guy has lots
to learn starting from zero but after 6 months what is next? Guys soaring is
not difficult.
How many of us are significantly better pilots after the first 2 or 3 years?
What have you learned the last 3 years? We quit flying if the conditions get
a little rough. You can choose your issue all day long as why we get board
or why attendance is shrinking.

BTW, Each and every contest I have been to is a social event! That's the
nature of humans. We tend to have fun when we can. I would say lets play a
little hardball and push our skills a bit and move up a peg. The USA was at
one time a soaring leader we sure can't say that anymore.

Craig

Dear friends,

A year of hard work yielded a number of exciting new products we are

happy to offer to you for Christmas:

 3. Supra's ailerons became longer, they are now available across the
full length of
 the wings tip section.
4. Wings tip of Supra Glass have been redesigned, which reduced their
weight by 7...8 grams (0.25...0.28 oz)--now, they are 18...20 grams
(0.6...0.7 oz) lighter than the wing tips of Supra Carbon
 Light.
The new design also resulted in the greatly increased strength of the
ailerons.

In our opinion, the best combination for F3J competition is a model with
the central wing section from Supra Carbon or Supra Carbon Light and the
wing tips from Supra Glass. We call this combo Supra Carbon/Glass Light.

1. DLG Blaster2 is now also offered for left hand launch! When placing

an order, you can add a note which

version, left- or right-handed, you would like (by default, we ship

right-handed version).

2. Graphite 2 is now manufactured with a new nose section for electric

power system.

The new nose is much safer and more convenient:

Re: [RCSE] Line breakage and launching and costest management - was Icon 2

2007-12-20 Thread S Meyer
Good discussions and comments. Glad to see you stepping up Rick and
testing the waters.

I for one think that the line is getting too heavy because the
winches are just too powerful.

So who's going to draft and propose the rules change? Should the
wording and strength be same as F3B winches?

I do not think monofilament will work on borrowed club winches it
will just get too torn up and will be expensive to maintain. Bad
monofilament line will break and delay a contest more than a FLS
with 150# line.

What will it cost to retrofit FLS winches to meet the new specification?

Thanks you Mike for suggesting a resistor. I just finished making 6
resistors for the CASL Phoenix contest in February for the sole
purpose of making less powerful Ford Long Shaft winches. The
winches will be less powerful than last years winches because of the
many line breaks last year. The line breaks really slowed down the
contest even though we had several experienced winch/retriever
operators there to repair the lines. So, you people coming to
Phoenix in February, start tapping the winch lines to get a feel for
winches with resistors. Rick

Re: [RCSE] Icon 2

2007-12-19 Thread S Meyer
Well Craig there is a lot of information and commentary in your
message. If I care to comment.

It's too bad for Don that he is in a state that is forcing illegal
immigrants, (low paid), out of the state or the unlikely, back to the
country they came from. If the US Government would get off their a$$
and create an immigration policy every business in America would at
least have a level playing field in regards to employment
costs. (And if you donate enough $$ your business could benefit by
being on the best part of the level field.)
Protection of the dollar starts by having a strong fiscal policy and
having trade protection against dangerous and inferior products that
Americans cannot seem to buy enough of. Seems like the government
and many citizens are just living for today and buying everything
that they can. Fun for short term, but now we are paying the price,
thus making our imported toys too expensive.

I know many ICON fliers none of them fit in the prissy
category. Perhaps California is living up to it's reputation. ;-)

Mmmm Pumpkin Pie... Do you make your own crust? Flame suit? You
should just try a couple of Ove Gloves now with silicone grips,
very coool. :-)

Craig I am almost certain you did not attain level 3 at age 10, so,
eat your heart out man, good for you. But does she cook and
clean? :-) Just be careful on what you wish for. :-)
I guess I see the reason for still being at Level 3. Gee, DP
manages to attain high RC soaring status and to have a GF, now that's
cool. You need to ask him how he does it. :-))) Of course now that
I think of it maybe he is just researching names for his next sailplane.

Lot's of reading and information.

What happens when you have to do a time like 6:53? Such as a contest

With a 3 diameter drum, the line speed will be

Seems about right. In any case, you can check it

Maybe Don Harban should just figure out how to form a club and get as
many as possible to join. Schools, Boy Scouts, 4-H, etc. Maybe we
all missed the point and we should be spending more time preachin'

this necessitates traveling a minimum of 270 miles one way to the

require another five trips with minimum 1000 mile round trips each.

It was tough conditions with overcast and threats of rain all
day. But the rain stayed away long enough for us to squeeze in 3 rounds.
Marc Gellart captured the coveted two day overall win with a win on
Sunday. And he did it without his Insanity on Sunday.

Hats off to the hard working crew:
Tom Kallevang, CD
Robin Meek, Winchmaster + Setup
Wayne Fredette, Launch Master

Pat's custom application for seeded man on man competition worked

I would expect Pat Crosby to be putting up scores and pics

Practice is over-rated.

the wind changes by 45 degrees every 10-15 minutes. Most of my
flying sites are surrounded by trees.

That's your thermal cycle. The largest thermals are moving through

Why measure, jut wait until it gets sluggish. (About 4.0 volts) I

the list of tasks.

Unfortunately ALL of this still misses the original intent of the contest
requirement. The contest requirement was designed to bring flyers together
to compare skills, to promote the transfer of skills and information and to
INCREASE PARTICIPATION. If you have a core group of pilots, as few as two,
who have even a minimal level of success, they can pass this success on to
others. It's a synergistic thing that can rapidly grow to the point where
it's possible to have regular LOCAL contests with at least ten guys on most
any weekend.

These DO NOT have to be a blood and guts type of contest, merely an
opportunity to fly together, thereby learning from each other and improving
the overall skill level. When the other local flyers see how much fun is
being had they will join in, even if they KNOW they have not a whisper of a
chance to win. They are there because it's FUN. And, this does not require
a $2,000 moldie and a $600+ computer radio - it can be done with a 'lowly'
Gentle Lady, Spirit, Aspire or HOB 2 x 4.

The REAL problem with all of this is that it takes a little effort by each
individual to promote soaring, taking time away from each individuals flying
time. Realizing that many are not willling to put forth this effort is one
of many reasons we are suffering the lack of participation in soaring.

Perception plays a very big role in things. We really need to keep that
in mind.

Consider the answers to the following two questions.
Why do you want to work through the levels of the LSF?
What do you/we gain if there is a separate advancement scheme?

I started traveling to Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky to attend
contests. First it was because that was where the HL contests were
at. Now mainly TD contests. It was not just for the LSF points, I
met some great guys along the way, learned a lot from all the
different people, and had a lot of fun as well. I could move closer
to theses areas but I choose to live where I am.

The current LSF system is designed for the pilot who wants interact
with other pilots, teach and learn at the same time.

As far as getting a Level V win from a SOAR club contest. Fat
chance, I have resided that I will have to attend smaller contests in
far places. Away from guys like, Rich Burnoski, Karl Miller, Jim
McCarthy, Tom Kallevang, Jim Bacus, and more. And now the upcoming
novice of the group Pat Crosby, watch out he's a good stick.

So be careful what you wish for.

To attain Level 5 requires dedication, commitment, and yes,
money. There is no hobby out there if you want to be good you have
to spend money. From Gardening to Cycling, they all have an
expensive side to them. And they all take what few of us have... time.

It just occurred to me that a good explanation of why some want a
New achievement program may be the same reason that involvement by
new blood is diminishing. Nobody has any time to enjoy
themselves. The 40 hour work week is gone and if you get more than 2
weeks vacation consider yourself lucky.

Perhaps an achievement program that rewards point for posting to RCSE. :-)

All hobbies can be expensive, but perhaps the largest expense in

A very fine post in its entirety, Jim. 2-Meters is a world
unto itself, and when good flyers go at it, it's a very
worthwhile event. You have to launch to the moon, then find lift
quick, because the little planes come down in a hurry and don't
travel well if you hit sink.

The dominance of the Duck design seems to me to have
some interesting implications. U.S. flyers generally have
disdained V- tail airplanes, but the Duck shows that they can
learn to love 'em if the tail is big enough. Additionally, the
Duck has a fairly low AR wing and is pretty heavy; these
characteristics don't match the current fashion, but in this
class they seem to prove out to be best in practice.

It would be neat to see a resurgence of interest in 2M, just to
see what other design tweaks might come along. It seems that
there hasn't been much design activity in this class since the
Organic and 2M Mantis. Maybe there's a world-beater out there to
be discovered.

I learned that smaller the wings the faster it drops. The higher you
go the harder it is to see. Wingspan is king, ask DP, Marc Gellart,
or any of the number of top pilots in unlimited flying Sharons.

I flew my first plane in 2M, a Wanderer, what a hoot. I installed a
Picolario and was amazed that at 890 feet it looked like my unlimited
ship at 1800 feet.

A very fine post in its entirety, Jim. 2-Meters is a world

worthwhile event. You have to launch to the moon, then find
lift quick, because the little planes come down in a hurry and
don't travel well if you hit sink.

I can't remember exactly but a Legend probably has something like a SD7037

be indicated.

A rule of thumb is only a starting point, test flying is the proof.

Looking for Advice on Wing Incidence.

I am looking forward to flying in the June ESL event at LISF on Long Island.
I hope to see some of you there.

I have a old yellow and blue Airtronics Legend that I am trying to tune up.
I picked up a wing incidence meter and am trying to set the wing/h-stab
incidence. I don't have a recommended spec so I am trying to shoot for
something reasonable.

If I set the stab at 0 degrees on my GP incidence meter, the wing measures
1.5 degrees below the zero. I guess that would be 1.5 degrees positive
relative to the stab, correct?

Any recommendations on a good starting target?

It used to be more but I added 1/32 in shims under the rear wing hold down
to raise the back of the wing about 6 months ago and it seemed to fly
better. So I bought the incidence meter and want to set it correctly.
Unfortunately I have no idea if I am right on the money or way off. I have
the build manual but there is no recommendation in the book.

Would a 0 degree difference between the wing and the stab be a reasonable
starting point? I am thinking that there should be some difference but I may
have too much.

I hope to be able to upgrade to a Mantis or similar by the end of the
summer, but for now this is what I have to fly. Until then, I will chalk up
the work I do on this plane as a learning experience. Any advice would be
appreciated.

Misty Meadows contest is hosted by Terry Edmonds on his property in
Solon IA. A beautiful country setting with plenty of raptors
signifying lift across the rolling landscape.

If you were not lucky enough to have an expert thermal locator it was
tough conditions. Lift at times was spotty with small thermals not
following a straight trajectory and staying small all the way to
1000'. The wind was a little breezy for a bit, and it seemed to
always blow the most on my approach to the landing zone on the top of
a ridge. Challenging landing spots to say the least, tough to
practice that in the flat lands of the Mid-West.

Horizon Hobby was very grateful to donate a Spektrum radio to raffle
off at the end of contest! Quiet Flyer also donated T-Shirts, hats,
and magazines for give-aways.

I had my 2 red planes working for me, Erasure X-Treme on Saturday and
Fazer on Sunday. It is amazing how quick the Fazer can get around
the sky. There was not an area of the sky that was unreachable.

The EISS is a great group of guys and I am looking forward to

Re: [RCSE] nose radius

2006-04-12 Thread S Meyer

Interesting. Except for nose radius the rules seem very generous.

Wing loading would include just about any sailplane over 1.5
meters. Organic is at 7.8oz/ft, the Supra is at 8.2oz/ft. However
many DLGs are now less than 3.95. Not able to compete in FAI or AMA
event? And what about nose radius?

Wing area is very generous, an ICON is 1,150 sq, even a 4M Thermic
XL is only 81 dm2 (1,266 sq)

So are there any currently manufactured planes, (TD, over 1.5
meters), that do not meet these rules?
And would you want to fly them in competition? Maybe a 3.3 meter F3J
with 3.95oz wing loading? :-)
