Wing bolt mount pod changes, longer bolts, wing sub rib changes, layup changes, and both the aileron link insert and now flap inserts too...and lets not forget that now the ailerons go all the way to the tips...they are lighter now and stiffer too on the current batch of wings coming to Barry's den of storage. A short while back, well maybe a year or so, it was pretty clear that the area where the aileron inserts were mounted and how they were mounted needed to be changed for linkage geometry and durability, you can tell the new version because the hump is a bit taller. Those of you who hit the landing spot too hard like me, find pretty soon a bubble in the skin around the flap inserts on top. And the flaps not moving together and a lot of slop too. You glue it and glue it but in the end like Don the answer is to put carbon horns in the bottom The new wing has a far more durable link insert for both the ailerons and flaps. Mine? RE: [RCSE] Contest Format
Is it the type of Society or contest formats that are changing the competitive soaring environment? Overall USA Club membership/participation is down. From my perspective the Europeans have more vacation time and spendable income than USA residents have experienced in over 30 years. Remember when the 40 hour work week was standard? And most had 4 weeks vacation by the time they were 30. Perhaps more science needs to be taught in school? Perhaps too much emphasis on sports and not education? Soaring geeks in the USA just don't rank high on the celebrity list. I think many of the answers and solutions are rooted deep in the economic and social threads of our society. The USA is losing it's position in the world. We have to just follow now. Steve Meyer At 11:00 AM 1/11/2008, Tom Copp wrote: Wow lots of stuff here. They play hardball over there and their attendance is thriving. Inside the USA most of our formats are the same since the late 70's while our models have evolved over the last 30+ years the contests have not. Our attendance is shrinking, we give in to a sandbagger, and we don't want to change anything to keep the pilots we have coming back. We don't push ourselves to try anything new and learn something. Sure the new guy has lots to learn starting from zero but after 6 months what is next? Guys soaring is not difficult. How many of us are significantly better pilots after the first 2 or 3 years? What have you learned the last 3 years? We quit flying if the conditions get a little rough. You can choose your issue all day long as why we get board or why attendance is shrinking. BTW, Each and every contest I have been to is a social event! That's the nature of humans. We tend to have fun when we can. Supra's ailerons became longer, they are now available across the full length of the wings tip section. 4. Wings tip of Supra Glass have been redesigned, which reduced their weight by 7...8 grams (0.25...0.28 oz)--now, they are 18...20 grams (0.6...0.7 oz) lighter than the wing tips of Supra Carbon Light. The new design also resulted in the greatly increased strength of the ailerons. In our opinion, the best combination for F3J competition is a model with the central wing section from Supra Carbon or Supra Carbon Light and the wing tips from Supra Glass. We call this combo Supra Carbon/Glass Light. 1. DLG Blaster2 is now also offered for left hand launch! When placing an order, you can add a note which version, left- or right-handed, you would like (by default, we ship right-handed version). 2. Graphite 2 is now manufactured with a new nose section for electric power system. Re: [RCSE] Line breakage and launching and costest management - was Icon 2
Good discussions and comments. Glad to see you stepping up Rick and testing the waters. I for one think that the line is getting too heavy because the winches are just too powerful. So who's going to draft and propose the rules change? Should the wording and strength be same as F3B winches? I do not think monofilament will work on borrowed club winches it will just get too torn up and will be expensive to maintain. Bad monofilament line will break and delay a contest more than a FLS with 150# line. What will it cost to retrofit FLS winches to meet the new specification? Re: [RCSE] Icon 2
Well Craig there is a lot of information and commentary in your message. If I care to comment. It's too bad for Don that he is in a state that is forcing illegal immigrants, (low paid), out of the state or the unlikely, back to the country they came from. If the US Government would get off their a$$ and create an immigration policy every business in America would at least have a level playing field in regards to employment costs. (And if you donate enough $$ your business could benefit by being on the best part of the level field.) Protection of the dollar starts by having a strong fiscal policy and having trade protection against dangerous and inferior products that Americans cannot seem to buy enough of. Seems like the government and many citizens are just living for today and buying everything that they can. Fun for short term, but now we are paying the price, thus making our imported toys too expensive. I know many ICON fliers none of them fit in the prissy category. Perhaps California is living up to it's reputation. ;-) Mmmm Pumpkin Pie... Do you make your own crust? Flame suit? You should just try a couple of Ove Gloves now with silicone grips, very coool. :-) Craig I am almost certain you did not attain level 3 at age 10, so, eat your heart out man, good for you. But does she cook and clean? :-) Just be careful on what you wish for. :-) I guess I see the reason for still being at Level 3. Gee, DP manages to attain high RC soaring status and to have a GF, now that's cool. Well put Jim, my sentiments exactly. Unfortunately ALL of this still misses the original intent of the contest requirement. The contest requirement was designed to bring flyers together to compare skills, to promote the transfer of skills and information and to INCREASE PARTICIPATION. If you have a core group of pilots, as few as two, who have even a minimal level of success, they can pass this success on to others. It's a synergistic thing that can rapidly grow to the point where it's possible to have regular LOCAL contests with at least ten guys on most any weekend. These DO NOT have to be a blood and guts type of contest, merely an opportunity to fly together, thereby learning from each other and improving the overall skill level. When the other local flyers see how much fun is being had they will join in, even if they KNOW they have not a whisper of a chance to win. They are there because it's FUN. And, this does not require a $2,000 moldie and a $600+ computer radio - it can be done with a 'lowly' Gentle Lady, Spirit, Aspire or HOB 2 x 4. The REAL problem with all of this is that it takes a little effort by each individual to promote soaring, taking time away from each individuals flying time. Realizing that many are not willling to put forth this effort is one of many reasons we are suffering the lack of participation in soaring. Perception plays a very big role in things. We really need to keep that in mind. Consider the answers to the following two questions. Why do you want to work through the levels of the LSF? I started traveling to Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky to attend contests. First it was because that was where the HL contests were at. Now mainly TD contests. It was not just for the LSF points, I met some great guys along the way, learned a lot from all the different people, and had a lot of fun as well. I could move closer to theses areas but I choose to live where I am. The current LSF system is designed for the pilot who wants interact with other pilots, teach and learn at the same time. As far as getting a Level V win from a SOAR club contest. Fat chance, I have resided that I will have to attend smaller contests in far places. Away from guys like, Rich Burnoski, Karl Miller, Jim McCarthy, Tom Kallevang, Jim Bacus, and more. And now the upcoming novice of the group Pat Crosby, watch out he's a good stick. So be careful what you wish for. To attain Level 5 requires dedication, commitment, and yes, money. There is no hobby out there if you want to be good you have to spend money. Re: [RCSE] LSF Discussion
It just occurred to me that a good explanation of why some want a New achievement program may be the same reason that involvement by new blood is diminishing. Nobody has any time to enjoy themselves. The 40 hour work week is gone and if you get more than 2 weeks vacation consider yourself lucky. Perhaps an achievement program that rewards point for posting to RCSE. :-) Oh yea, I'm at work. You have to launch to the moon, then find lift quick, because the little planes come down in a hurry and don't travel well if you hit sink. The dominance of the Duck design seems to me to have some interesting implications. U.S. flyers generally have disdained V- tail airplanes, but the Duck shows that they can learn to love 'em if the tail is big enough. Additionally, the Duck has a fairly low AR wing and is pretty heavy; these characteristics don't match the current fashion, but in this class they seem to prove out to be best in practice. It would be neat to see a resurgence of interest in 2M, just to see what other design tweaks might come along. I learned that smaller the wings the faster it drops. The higher you go the harder it is to see. Wingspan is king, ask DP, Marc Gellart, or any of the number of top pilots in unlimited flying Sharons. I flew my first plane in 2M, a Wanderer, what a hoot. I installed a Picolario and was amazed that at 890 feet it looked like my unlimited ship at 1800 feet. If I need a thermalling challenge I fly DLG. I am looking forward to flying in the June ESL event at LISF on Long Island. I hope to see some of you there. I have a old yellow and blue Airtronics Legend that I am trying to tune up. I picked up a wing incidence meter and am trying to set the wing/h-stab incidence. I don't have a recommended spec so I am trying to shoot for something reasonable. If I set the stab at 0 degrees on my GP incidence meter, the wing measures 1.5 degrees below the zero. I guess that would be 1.5 degrees positive relative to the stab, correct? Any recommendations on a good starting target? It used to be more but I added 1/32 in shims under the rear wing hold down to raise the back of the wing about 6 months ago and it seemed to fly better. So I bought the incidence meter and want to set it correctly. Unfortunately I have no idea if I am right on the money or way off. I have the build manual but there is no recommendation in the book. Would a 0 degree difference between the wing and the stab be a reasonable starting point? I am thinking that there should be some difference but I may have too much. I hope to be able to upgrade to a Mantis or similar by the end of the summer, but for now this is what I have to fly. Until then, I will chalk up the work I do on this plane as a learning experience. Any advice would be appreciated. Best Regards, Ed Anderson Long Island Silent Flyers [EMAIL PROTECTED] RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] MOM scoring software
Many attempts at doing MOM with computer fail because of adequate preparation and backup process, always in case the first fails. I am a firm believer that a MOM contest can be run quicker than manual scoring. I just have not seen the software that can do it yet. With larger displays getting cheaper I can see a contest as large as the NATS to be run as a seeded MOM contest. It's possible. Now Ben we expect to see a report on the variety of scoring information you have acquired. :-) Steve Meyer SOAR LSF IV At 06:40 PM 5/31/2006, Marc Gellart wrote: Ben, The best program for seeded MOM is a good calculator and someone who is good with math and has a good attention span. Re: [RCSE] nose radius
Interesting. Except for nose radius the rules seem very generous. Wing loading would include just about any sailplane over 1.5 meters. Organic is at 7.8oz/ft, the Supra is at 8.2oz/ft. However many DLGs are now less than 3.95. Not able to compete in FAI or AMA event? And what about nose radius? Wing area is very generous, an ICON is 1,150 sq, even a 4M Thermic XL is only 81 dm2 (1,266 sq) So are there any currently manufactured planes, (TD, over 1.5 meters), that do not meet these rules?
