Re: [RCSE] 'Hitec/MPX Easy Glider F5J Sailplane - canopy clip warning

2005-08-03 Thread heechoonlee
Gordy,

I too look forward to flying the Easy Glider as a step up from the Easy
Star in the near future. I am on my 4th Easy Star, one of which I added
flaps and ailerons. I love the Easy Star as a trainer plane for all
stages of a pilot's development as it minimizes the burden on the pocket
book and thus on the mind.

I do have a small gripe about the Easy Star and I write this to you so
that you might also avoid it if the clip for the Easy Glider's canopy is
set up similar to the Easy Star's. I and several other flyers in Seoul,
Korea lost our canopies because of clip failure. Now, we either tape the
canopy to the fuse or pull a thick rubber band over the canopy. No more
lost canopies now.

[RCSE] Good vendor alert

2005-09-09 Thread heechoonlee
Steven Belknap
Diversity Model Aircraft

FlyDMA.com

Ordering via the internet from my military station in Korea, my packages
arrive a month late at times. My order of a NEU motor from Steven of
Diversity Model Aircraft was shipped in the first days of August but I had
no notice of its arrival as of 8th of September. I emailed Steven of this
situation and asked if he could track it or took out insurance on the
package. His reply was negative on the tracking but he was willing to
send me another one at his cost if I did not get it in another 2 weeks.
The story has a good ending in that today I found my box sitting in the
mailroom ever since the 16th of August.

Though I had the anguish of waiting over a month for my motor, I am glad
that I found a model dealer with such a generous heart. Here ye! Here
ye! Steven Belknap is a good guy!

Re: [RCSE] Albuquerque Soaring

2004-11-15 Thread heechoonlee
I'd like to second this message of thanks to the Albuquerque Soaring
Association. I, too, had the opportunity to spend a week in Albuquerque
in August and found out about the ASA from a message posted on RCSE by
Richard Shagam. Richard Dick drove me out to the sod farm and Dan
Tandberg drove me out to the balloon field for two wonderful days of
experiencing big thermals of New Mexico. These guys are the best and I
will always cherish their hospitality. Needless to say, I am looking for
any excuse to visit Albuquerque again:)

About 4 years ago when I got interested in hand launch gliders, I found
your site and learned many things about flying gliders. I thank you and
wish you all the best. May you always be an inspiration and encouragement
to fliers of all ages and types.

Re: [RCSE] Nimh batteries -> LiPos

2005-02-16 Thread heechoonlee
We here in Korea use LiPo's almost exclusively now. I charge my LiPos
only at 1C and have had no problems. Key to dealing with the hour of
charging time is having more than 1 battery for each airframe and having
at least 3 planes out in the field with me :)

Re: [RCSE] DLG models for a newcomer

2006-04-10 Thread heechoonlee
If you can handle a HLG, why not go for the best? I almost ruined my left
knee trying to discus launch inadequate DLGs before I finally quit and
waited for my Blaster. It is a cinch to build, lauches high and stays up
a looong time. The only fault is the wing. Don't grab it or it will
crush. The spar is strong enough for the launch and all flight maneuvers
but the rest of the wing won't take any man-handling.

RE: [RCSE] Beginner sailplane recommendations

2006-05-27 Thread heechoonlee
I have assembled and flown both Easy Star and Easy Glider (non-motorized
version) and recommend the Easy Star as a first plane to learn on. It
glides very well and is much easier to handle and transport on the ground.

As was mentioned by Ed Anderson, Easy Glider does not penetrate well
unless it is ballasted and a hefty nose weight added. I put 2 inch long
steel rod pieces in the spar tube and another couple of ounces in the nose
to make it penetrate on the slope.

For Easy Star, a beginner is likely to corkscrew the plane unwittingly. I
helped a friend recover from one and the wing broke at the end of the
spar. A length of fiberglass tape from the wing root to over the curved
wingtip edge solved this weakness. I also like to dive the Easy Star full
throttle on a brushless motor and found the horizontal stab lose authority
in recovering from steep dives, resulting in my Easy Star taking a dunk in
the Han River of South Korea on more than 1 occasion. This too was solved
by adding a length of fiberglass tape on the bottom surface of the
horizontal stab and the elevator. One more modification for a beginner
Easy Star is to fix the wing to the fuse. I found the wing roots get
loose after few insertions, removals and tumbles. Of course, having a
minivan big enough to carry the fully assembled Easy Star is helpful too.
I get fine directional control with the stock rudder - just have to be
patient and wait for the plane to listen to your directional control input
or anticipate the necessary change in direction by a few seconds :)
