The Google group is a nice addition.  I¹ve used Google Reader for my news;
it¹s an excellent interface. Very easy to understand.

Hope our list doesn¹t get too diluted across the web.

I concur with Anker. Yahoo groups lacks for our type of usage.
Google is simple (like a Mac) and Yahoo is difficult, convoluted and
tedious (like Windows).
I am using the "abridged" option which is slick, quick and doesn't
keep asking for passwords. Groups has it's place but Google rocks. I
use mine along with Google reader which gathers stuff from other
places at the same time.

Our club also uses Yahoo Groups for intra-club info, but for an open
forum like RCSE was, Google's the winner. Try it. You'll like it.

I actually measured the power consumption a few years ago.

In any event, I'll bet you could find the synthesized module pretty
cheap nowadays, as people are going 2.4 GHz. A channel 40 module
would be even cheaper, but might be hard to find.

Try ebay, rcgroups if RCSE doesn't come through.

2008-08-27 Thread Anker Berg-Sonne

Ed,

Its certainly true for XPS and Spectrum, and its the Spectrum I am
recommending, because the deal is so good.

What happens is that even though the 2.4GHZ transmits at greater power
than 72MHZ, they transmit in packets and between packets the transmitter
isn't sending any signal. The net effect is that the total power drain
goes down. I use both XPS and Spectrum and I can see it directly on how
long my transmitter batteries last.

[RCSE] A typical post from the good old days

2008-08-27 Thread Chuck Anderson
This is a typical post from the good old days when RCSE was
young. But like all of us, RCSE declined with age. This is what
made RCSE so great. Now all we get is what is the latest and
greatest moldy and who won the last contest. Maybe it is time for
RCSE to depart.

This was the first of several posts Joe made about dynamic soaring.

Chuck Anderson

From: Joe Wurts <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: 28 May 96 02:35:19 EDT
Subject: Dynamic Soaring
Status: RO

For quite a long time I've heard about "dynamic soaring", but have
almost never really used it in any operational sense while flying rc
gliders. In fact, I've kind of filed it under the Holy Grail
category. Just one of those things that you read about. But I've now
had a bit of practical experience with it.

One of the slopes that I have been flying at has a very pronounced
"razor back" to it (Parker Mountain near Acton CA). What is really
neat about it is that the air behind the hill is completely
separated. That is, it can be blowing 25 mph on the face, and behind
the hill, it is almost calm and sometimes even blowing softly in the
opposite direction. It turns out that this is an absolutely perfect
set-up for dynamic soaring. All you have to do is fly straight
down-wind over the hill into the calm air and turn around. If you
want, when you come back over the upwind face, turn around and
repeat. With each turn, you get an amazing boost in the energy of
the glider. The first time I really played with this was with my
Floyd, and on the second go-around I fluttered the wings. The plane
will take an extended vertical dive without any possibility of
flutter, so I was able to get it to above the terminal velocity of
the glider in horizontal flight!!!

One thing that is especially wild is when the wind dies down a bit,
and you can just stay up in the normal lift in minimum sink mode.
Start doing the orbiting for the dynamic soaring and you can get up
to about three times the speed that you can when you just fly in the
normal slope lift. Wild stuff. What really gets entertaining is
when you make a mistake behind the hill. The air is a bit turbulent,
and occasionally I miss the air (read: smite the earth). This is
where a good foamie comes in handy. I woulda never really
investigated this phenomena without a crash-proof plane.

If your slope has separated air behind the hill, and you do not mind
occasionally crashing while you learn a new trick, give this a
try. Caution, I'd recommend trying this maneuver out sometime when
you have the hill to yourself. It takes a little getting used to...
And a hint, the lower you go on the downwind side, the better off you
are (more delta-vee typically).

Re: [RCSE] Looking for a Futaba Ch 40 module

2008-08-27 Thread Ed Anderson
I have two 9C Supers. One has a 2.4 GHz Spectrum module in it and 4
receivers. This handles my slope planes primarily. Over time I will
migrate all to this.

The other is on 72 MHz. I use both. I am not ready to replace the 12
receivers I have now on 72 MHz. I have ch 35 and 55 modules also, but all
my planes are on 40, so for the cost of a channel module I can keep them
flying till I migrate all to 2.4 over the next couple of years.

Humor folder is from November, 1995 and I did not save earlier posts.

Early on, I realized that there was a lot of good information from
real experts so began saving the technical posts in separate
folders. Some of the folders were for aerodynamics, electronics,
structures, flutter, humor, soaring history, launch equipment, and
one just for Joe Wurts posts. The good technical stuff has vanished
from RCSE so it won't be the loss it could have been if RCSE had
disappeared 10 years ago. I collected some of the best on
aerodynamics and structures into a word document for easy reference
and it turned out to be over a hundred pages.

RC Groups is a poor substitute for what RCSE has been but I suppose I
will have to do with what is available.

Well a sad farewell to an old friend and friends that I see scattering across

Does the end of the RCSE mean the end of the Yahoo groups connection? Couldn't
those of us that want it to go on forever use the Yahoo groups?

Yet another RCSE.

Having enjoyed RCSE for a long time, I too decided to put an alternative up to
the group. It is nearly identical to the original in format and function. It
is just a plain old e-mail list with an optional digest, and it archives the
traffic as well. It won't ever have any advertising (except for the
wait-and-wail's from Gordy and others) and it isn't out there collecting data
on you (big brother).

A web based sign up page is here:

You can also sign up the old way ( I think it even speaks html e-mail for sign
up) by sending a message to:

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the 'net,
not a hard drive was whirring, it was quiet, you bet!

When out of the modem there arose such a clatter,
I sprang to my keyboard to see what was the matter.

I booted the system and, and logged on to my sevice,
I downloaded E-mail of volumes quite perverse.

All postings were WACO, a name that's stupendous
for stating the facts in ways that offend us.

He cursed and he ranted, he call us bad names,
and he made lots of fun of our silly airplanes.
On Lucas, on Sal, on Richard, and Phil,
on Gordon, on Daryl, on Steve and on Bill,

he piled his abuse til they all had their fill.

He's been hiding in Utah and hanging with Mormons,
designing new stuff with a big box of Crayons.

He's merry and laughing about things that aren't funny,
and he's planning a new way to take all our money.

He showed me the drawings for things quite outrageous
and he cackled and howled, he might be contageous!

I shuddered and grimaced and whimpered in fear.
Could this be our fate for the coming New Year?

In panic I logged off to end this attack,
and his last words still haunt me. He said,

"I'll be back!"

Merry Christmas to the Christians, Happy Hanukkah to the Jews, Muslims and
Kwanza celebrators, enjoy the Government holidays.

Thermal Vagrant Meets Bambi

I have not been posting much here lately, due to the
many activities of the season--Ohio's three week deer
season. I've been spending about every other day out in the

woods, up in a tree, communing with nature, reading paper
backs and eating cold pop tarts. Altogether a quality
wilderness experience.

We had a strange deer season this year. It rained
heavily the weekend before, and then stayed relatively warm,
in the 30's and 40's, and windy. As a result, the autumn
leaves were as soggy as a half-hour old bowl of corn flakes,
and between that and the wind, you could not hear the deer
moving. In Ohio, you hunt mostly with your ears, since you
can't see much more than 40 or 50 yards in most of our woods.

There could have been a whole herd of deer doing the
Macarena right behind me, and I wouldn't have known it.

And then there were the left handed deer. If you are up
in a tree stand with a shotgun or muzzle loader (our
basic choices here in Ohio) and a deer comes up on the wrong
side of your stand, it is virtually impossible to turn around
and shoot in the "left handed" direction. I saw a lot of
left handed deer.

So, after three weeks of off and on hunting, I still
haven't fired a shot. What did I get out of all this?

I had a nuthatch give me the hairy eyeball from six feet
up, and then proceed to bomb me with nuts. Could have been
worse.
I got to watch a pair of Pilated Woodpeckers work over a
dead tree, throwing chips like little red-headed chainsaws.
I got to watch a young doe bound around in circles,
doing six foot leaps in a meadow, trying to figure out what I
was and what I was doing. (I was taking a leak in a groundhog
hole, holding the wrong weapon at the time.)
I had a couple of really nice naps in the woods, one on
a six foot long flat rock blanketed with heavy green moss.
(Well, why not? My wife says I make moose calls in my
sleep.)
I observed a long, drawn out, terratorial dispute
between a fox squirrel and a gray squirrel. The little guy
won.
I ate lunch in four different restaurants where deer
hunters are regarded as normal people.
I got to see the witch hazel flowering among the
rocks of my son's favorite lurking spot, and the bittersweet
blooming a brilliant red in the tops of a scotch pine.
I got the hell out of the office for most of three weeks!
And I found out that my clients and the world get along just
fine without me at my desk.
And I got to see a lot of deer, either from the wrong
side, or from the rear, or from 150 yards out. Or all of the
above.

So what is the soaring connection? Well, last summer
one of my flying buddies, Adventures With Bill Hoelcher, said
he was shocked to find out that I was both a deer hunter and
a sailplane pilot. He said that sailplane flying was such a
peaceful and gentle sport that he didn't see how the same
person could be a deer hunter. Then I watched Bill enter a
handlaunch contest and proceed to smash the cockpit off a
couple of other planes by circling against the crowd in a
thermal. I gotta get him out in the woods.

And because of all the time I spent in the woods, I blew my 12 month
flyer status. I didn't get out once in December. Although I did scout
some nice Knox County slopes..

And there is soaring at yahoogroups.com which has been carrying this
lists traffic for sometime. Since there are already 1383 members to
that list and it already carried this lists traffic, it would seem a
more natural migration. It offers both email push for those of us that
like that as well as a web interface. It would be my choice over
RCgroups, MAN and google groups (which seems to require a gmail
address).

I'm surprised I haven't heard more griping, but it's like most of us
on the RCSE knew that it was going to come down at some point. It
had a good run and definitely kept me close to the hobby when my
focus shifted elsewhere during the off season.

But now we've got some new-fangled options out there. RCGroups,
this ModelAircraftNews site, and the Google Group created by Dennis
Hoyle.
I understand al ot of the complaints about RCGroups. I myself don't
check in on it as much as I should - and for good reason. It's a
discussion based site, and cannot be used like the RCSE. People
check RCGroups at their leisure while the RCSE gets sent directly to
you. It's pull versus push, and the PUSH of the RCSE keeps people
reading it. RCGroups excels when it comes to focused discussions on
topics, and not news and notifications.

But now, the MAN and Google Groups systems give us the option to
continue that conversation, but with a few new gee-gaws and gadgets,
like uploading media files and creating pages. Excellent
opportunities that I think might get used quite a bit.

But which to use? No disrespect to ModelAirplaneNews, but my choice

mailbox, and I don't have to check it constantly.

2. It's Google
  - It's not going away any time soon
  - It will be constantly upgraded

Obviously, I'll follow whereever most people go, but I'd prefer
Google :)

   - Easier to read - I can either get it via email, the web or plug it
into a news reader like the Google Reader that I already use.
   - Maintains that simple "push" style that drops the emails in my
mailbox, and I don't have to check it constantly.

2. It's Google
   - It's not going away any time soon
   - It will be constantly upgraded

Obviously, I'll follow whereever most people go, but I'd prefer Google :)

Hey Gordy:

We finally got a chance to try out the KY Horse Park field last Sat and it
should do quite nicely. A bit of a slope, but nothing like Jacobson, a nice
wide open field, with a few trees. We had 630 ft of line out, and its should be
doable in practically all directions. Lift on Sat was very good.

Congrats on the MVSA win.

Cheers,

"He shot down a club mate and didn't admit it."
The Great One sucked his teeth and grimaced, not a pretty sight.
"Well I am afraid that about does it for you my boy. Just as a
matter of interest how did you get up here?"
I picked up the glider and talked them through the flight, all the
twists and turns, the tactical switches of thermal, the fast penetration
and slow circling, it took about thirty minutes. They sat down, another
beer was offered to me, they were enthralled.
"Hot Damn, that was some thermalling!" The Great One slapped his
leg, he was impressed.
"Well actually it was nothing like as tough as the thermal I had to
fly in to beat Joe Wurts."
The Great One looked at me aghast.
"You, you, you managed to beat Joe Wurts!"
"Just the once."
The Great One's face lit up, he gave me a great fatherly smile.
"That does it. Peter wipe his file. Jim, you are going to be in my

have it and would love to have it.

It was posted sometime in 1996 or 1997. It was a made up story, posted
from a guy in England, where he had communicated with a dead flying
buddy via a seance and the flying buddy had a story about going to hell
with his glider. It was fantastic, well written.

[RCSE] RIP RCSE

2008-08-25 Thread Kevin
Although I haven't flown competitively for 7 years, I've always subscribed to
RCSE to find out about new technologies, designs, etc. It's also cool to see
what friends are doing via RCSE. I've subscribed to RCSE for most of the years
of its existence.Through RCSE I learned how to how to build 'em, how to fly
'em how to crash 'em and how to repair 'em. (With many kudos to local
clubmembers and friends of course). I learned how to compete with dignity. I
have learned through RCSE and through generous input from ALL of you. I
learned that good sense and sincere communication works better than a
flamethrower. I guess what I'm saying is it'll be missed. Hopefully, one or
more of you ambitious young guys will fill the void- after all, there are just
sometimes that nothing works better than the flamethrower... hehe Thanks Mike
for a great run.

[RCSE] End of RCSE

2008-08-25 Thread James MacLean
Many thanks to AirAge, MAN, and Mike! I certainly will miss RCSE as it was
my helper and companion trying to learn about soaring. It has been about 11
years for me now. I can sometimes scare my more skilled friends and have
gotten up to LSF 4.1. RCSE has provided me with almost all of my planes. What
is better are the people I think I know a little bit and the ones I have had
the pleasure to actually fly with. All the other groups have code words - here
there are names and sometimes insights into the people. For example: Joe
Wurts - his advice has been much appreciated and his exploits are legendary.
He came to Orlando once and I was priviledged to fly with him and enjoy a nice
chat over lunch. And another example is Gordy who was at that lunch also.
Gordy really has slept here! We have had a lot of fun flying together. There
are lots of others I hope to meet sometime all thanks to RCSE. It has been
great for me. Thanks to you all.

Well, this is a sad day, Mike. Although I suppose it had to happen.

I still have a file of old flame wars, name-calling, and disputes, but reading
them now, it seems sort of gratuitous to re-post any. However, here's one
classic.

Sal posted a gripe about Karlton in which he spelled the latter's name as
"Charlatan." When Karlton objected, Sal said it was an innocent mistake: "...my
spell checker didn't recognize Karlton and changed it, and I didn't notice..."

Sorry to hear that RCSE is ending soon. RCSE is the ONLY reason I
still subscribe to Model Airplane News. I feel that was the least I
could do for giving us RCSE. My oldest issue of MAN is dated 1947
and I still have most issues since then. It has been many years
since MAN has had anything of interest to me so I will not renew my
subscription when it expires.

MAN has been slicking up and dumbing down for years until it has sunk
to little more than a picture magazine. When I need something to
read, I go to the attic and bring down a few issues of MAN, Model
Builder, RCM, or Air Trails to read. They are a lot more interesting
than anything published today. Model Builder was the last really
interesting model magazine.

[RCSE] Re: Removing old covering, more info

2008-08-25 Thread schrederman

I used a lot of silkspan and Jap tissue on my Nordics and Wakefield
models. If I was going to recover the thing, I used 320 or 400 sandpaper
and sanded through it down to the wood. That way I didn't remove enough
wood to change things, and it went slow enough as to not mess things up.
I've done the same with Monokote on very delicate parts, like thin
rudders and stabs. Takes a while but the results are good.

Hobby-Poxy. That's why lacquer thinner removes a little of the paint but
does nothing to soften it. Although it does come off the bamboo
rather nicely

So I guess I'm going to have to use the two 20 year old cuties as Brian
Chan suggested :-)))

Actually I have a friend who has some 6' long 8" wide sanding belts. I'm
going to glue them to my work table and make one big ass sanding
block...

Dope based?? could be silk-span.Find yourself a container of dope
thinners to start. You will find that any dope-based finish be it
silk-span, tissue or silk can be stripped quite easily. The previous
post works for the most part. You should be able to soften any stubborn
areas with the dope thinners.

Good luck

It's hard to tell what type of covering it is... It's over 40 years old
so it can't be any type of iron on, Its not silk, but does apear to be
dope based

Craig;

You haven't specified what type of covering it is. If
it is Monokote I've been through this procedure many times before.

1) I start off by stripping off as much of the covering by hand.

2) Using a #11 exacto I pick as much as I can being careful not to
gouge the wood underneath.

3) Any stubborn areas I simply sand off with 100 grit dry.

Hi Guys,

Our young guys are our future...But put yourself at their age...did you have
cash for a moldie or any kind of competition sailplane?

I know you guys are sitting on flyable Superiors, dinged and dented Escapes,
Sharons, and the likeyou have some fantasy of 'selling' them but in fact
know that you'd never be happy with what someone would give for them...so
why not get TOP buck for them?

GIVE them to a young sailplaner ! They can't come to the field with out
ships..and flying a woodie Aspire or Genital Lady is fine for play but for
competing?

Look into your basements and your hearts... I can name a few guys who have
anty'd wayyy up to get Lee going..and he won Mid South (Junior but only a few
points off old guy :-).

Post your donations to me, and I'll try to mate them in the right
direction...if they need tail boom repairs or maybe a good wing ding
fixthat's part
of the hobby. And no don't go stripping those old servos out... come on, be
a man, be a friend, be a mentor.

I thought I had a dinged spare but turns out its a Perfect tip.

I'll pay shipping if someone is willing to donate a tip.

Thanks

[RCSE] Sincere Apology.....

2008-08-24 Thread Craig Allen

As some of you are aware I fell from a second story balcony and broke my back a
few years ago. This left me in incredible pain that was managed by various
prescription drugs, physical therapy, and exercises..

That was until the Workman's comp insurance company cut off all my benefits and
medical coverage about a year ago.

I have been self-medicating myself with Alcohol ( Polish Vodka) ever since... I
now realize I have a big problem and will be entering rehab tomorrow..

I want to apologize to all of you who I have offended and been a complete
asshole too..And a special apology and thank you to Don Peters who's sincere
email made me realize how big a problem I have, and what a total dick I have
becomeAnd to Gordy who tried to help me.

Once again I'm
truly sorry for my behavior. But the hardest thing to face is my Dad...
I'm so so sorry Dad i feel like a  total failure and an
Idiot

Sincerely

Craig

  1. Gordy will require a landing task to decide who is cabinet will be. (He
may not need advisors, but he DOES need someone to keep an eye on him)
  2. All press confrences will be timed with a talking timer and he will end
them all promptly..to get maximum points.
  3. Teddy Roosevelt used to challenge foreign heads of state to a boxing match
to settle issues, Gordy will require a fly off and he will make the foregin
heads of state use the world's heaviest Supra against his Ava. Calm conditions
only, off of a high start. Gordy likes the edge.
  4. Finally Gordy will have all of the trees around the white house removed so
he can launch from the front lawn.

  1. The Airforce will be required to fly all planes of every type inverted to
check each aircraft's CG.

  2. The Boy and Girl Scouts will be disbanded so all kids can start their LSF
levels.

  3. International squirmishes will be replaced with man on man flyoffs with
TWO popoffs allowed !

  4. The President's cabinet will be disbanded. Gordy doesn't need advisors !

  5. The White house will be repainted a 'Volz' blue.

The St Louis guys have done it again! A fantastic two days of
soaring...today the air was a lot tougher with the first round a 12min!

10's to follow.

She who must be obeyed called to remind me that part of this weekend's trip
was to spend time with Louisville to St Louis transplants...so my chain was
yanked.

Everybody took some time hits, my goal was to get some contest flights on my
High EndI was able to get in three rounds and the air changed from one to
the other so it was a good test.

I love it...its a lander for sure. I'm not using a skeg, but stuck two and
slid thru one...77 being the lowest...but I have a lot of putzing to do to get
the landing comp tuned.

Chris Lee was flying tough when I left and so was Ron Kukral (sp?)

Hope their day went great...Me? Apparently I have to get do some campaign
planning :-)
