[RCSE] Batteries and Chargers

2005-01-24 Thread Jack Suder
Question for today

What happens if you charge a NMH battery with a NiCad charger?
What happens if you charge a NiCad battery with a NMH charger?

If you use the wrong charger does it do any damage to the battery pack?

Western civilization as we know it fails. Some will argue that this

Eastern civilization as we know it fails. Again, some feel that this

Seriously, the difference between how NiMH and NiCd batteries are peak
charged is that NiMH cells have a smaller peak. So if you use a NiCd
charger on NiMH cells, it may `miss' the peak and keep charging even
after it's full. Or it may not -- it depends on how sensitive it is.
Overcharging at a high rate is definately very bad, and will destroy
the pack quickly.

If you use a NiMH charger on NiCd cells, the peak will be larger, so
it'll probably be just fine, though it might stop before the battery
is completely charged. Most NiMH chargers work fine with NiCd
batteries too.

Everything I just said is about peak chargers. If you're talking
about a slow charger, the sort where it just puts C/10 or so into the
battery, nothing bad will happen. NiMH cells will probably take
longer to charge, having more capacity and a higher self discharge
rate, but beyond that there's no issues.

Re: [RCSE] Batteries and Chargers

2005-01-24 Thread George Joy
Jack,
The problem here is NiMH cells, nothing will happen to NiCd cells,
in fact a NiMH charger is better for the NiCd cells than is a NiCd charger
because it has a more sensitive overvoltage detect.
All chargers except the Sirius charge line use Delta peak detection,
in other words they all overcharge the cells to find a peak. OVERCHARGE is
the number one killer of ALL batteries.
The Sirius Charge line is the only PEAK PREDICTION charger on the
market. It is the SAFEST there is for both NiCd and NiMH cells, PERIOD.
If you or anyone would like a deeper discussion of battery
maintenance, I can be reached @ 800-532-0092.

You wouldn't happen to be related to the George Joy that's the
President of Peak Electronics, who bought Sirius Electronics a while
back, would you? :)

I believe he is one and the same. I admit he seems a little prejudiced
here, but we have a man that believes in what he sells and stands behind his

get tired of these peak chargers killing my packs. That won't be long, I'm
