Re: [RCSE] Bird attacks vs. airplane color

2004-10-09 Thread Steve Meyer
Most of my planes are white on top, a couple of them are red.
I have shared thermals with Hawks, Vultures, Seagulls, and once even a
Duck. Hawks seem the most compatible. Occasionally they will screech and
complain and bully you into leaving "their territory".

Once I was in a thermal with a Hawk. In my effort to stay in the "good
air" with the Hawk I got a little close and the Hawk had to make an evasive
maneuver. Like a "near miss" when flying with other sailplanes. I was
sorry, though I don't think he understood me. We continued thermaling
together, and when he had position on me, high on my 6, he dove at me in a
threatening manner. It was beautiful and humorous. So I decided it was
time to put my "tail between my legs" and scoot out of there and let him
win. Like what was said before, I was just borrowing his air.

Oh I just hope if I can be reincarnated it would be as a Hawk or Eagle so I
can laugh at men trying to thermal their toy planes and not a pesky Red
Wing blackbird that pops up out of the reeds to peck at passing
sailplanes. :-)

The only plane I have had attacked in the air was the Infamous Flamingoid,
which is pink. I was doing a half hour thermal flight, and a couple of
buzzards, of all things, took offense at the presence of a Flamingoid in
their air and made repeated swoops at it. I did loops and stalls, and they
eventually left. I got the half hour.

And for what it's worth, the same pink Flamingoid has been attacked
several times on the ground by RC sailplane pilots. Go figure.

2004-10-08 Thread Winch
I fly with bald eagles on a near daily basis. If you are ahead and below
them, they will occasionally come over and look at you. If you are above or
behind them, they will evade and fly further on down the beach. I've only
been attacked once, by an immature eagle. He took a claw sized chunk out of
the leading edge on a WACO Mosquito and then proceeded on down the beach
feeling very proud of himself. I write this off as a bad case of teenage
avian hormones.

ps Seagulls are a lot more fun, they will follow you through most moves but
don't go inverted.

I had a hawk hit my sailplane that is white with a red canopy, it left talon
marks on the canopy. Earlier another hawk made an aggressive dive at the
same sailplane with talons extended but veered away before making contact.

Someone recently sent me a video clip of Zagis being harassed by a hawk. One
Zagi was white on the top surface and red on the underside, the other was
red. The hawk wouldn't leave the planes alone until they were on the ground.

Zagis are pretty maneuverable but the hawk could run rings around them.

I had a Monarch 2m, white with yellow and black trim. It was attacked by a
large hawk in the fall (not nesting season).

I've also had a completely yellow sloper that was hit by a hawk.
I've always tucked tail and ran when any bird was upset with my being up
there. I've never in any way harassed any bird, figuring it's their air
and I'm simply borrowing it.

Most recently, I was out at a new field. I'd launch and out of no where a
very large red tailed hawk would be directly above me. He would follow me
turn for turn always directly above me maybe 20-30 feet. After a few
minutes the hawk, seemingly satisfied that whatever I was flying wasn't a
threat, would move on. This happened perhaps 6-8 times. After awhile I
never saw that hawk again.

Neat!

All my sailplanes that have been attacked were yellow.

Years ago, a Hawk attacked my yellow Olympic II and
shredded the Monokote on the top of both wings.

Few years ago, I launched my 1/7.5 scale ASK13 into a gaggle of kites.
There must have been well over a dozen of them circling in a same thermal.
Couple of the birds made few aggressive moves toward my plane, attacking
it, but wiggling my wings turned them away. The plane had white top, blue
bottom fuse and white wing. A memorable moment and fligtht in my R/C
Soaring career.

A few years back, I was flying my LB2 hand launch and got in with a couple
of hawks. I made an aggressive move on them and one of them had a bowel
movement on my wing. Does that count ???
The wing was yellow, then turned yellow and ...

The only attack I have had was on a all red sailplane.
