To go with this I always kid people by telling them I usually buy two small

Stay away from boatbuilding, or you will get into those bigger kits.
The 5 gallon epoxy kit is ok for kayak building but anything bigger and
it really pays to buy the 55 gallon size along with the big gear pump.

All of the kayaks and paddles I have ever owned have been scratch built.
About 15% of my RC planes have been scratch built.

My problem is that my planes usually fly well and look ugly, some would
say UGLY.
That is annother thing I like about the new crop of high end gliders,
they are so *pretty*.

One more head to count... among the scratch builders...

I can't even begin to compete in years, models and experience with the
previous postings, but I do love to scratch build and design my own gliders
and sailplanes. I had my first design published in Model Aviation this month
(June 2000). I've been building and designing my own birds for thirty years
now. I still buy (and accumulate) kits and do get a great deal of pleasure
from building and flying them but nothing beats a flying manifestation of
your own ideas, your own design philosophy, your own style...

2000-05-15 Thread Harley Michaelis

Just wondering what % of subscribers here do scratch-building. Please be so
kind as to sign in if you do. I'll relate the response to 1,000 subscribers
and see what the figure is and report back to the list. Sometimes I wonder
if I am the only designer, builder, flyer, crasher, repairer left on the
planet. . . at it since age 8, born 1921. I estimate I have scratch-built
at least 500 models of all kinds including over 100 original R/C
sailplanes. It has been an immense adventure in experimentation and
creativity.

Hello Harley,
Count me in as a scratch builder. However I do not claim to be a
designer, I've built a couple of originals of my own in the hlg size using
composites. I've built the midget that was published in rcm, it was a bit
sluggish with std radio equipment however. Also basically did some kit bash
of a saggitta 900 as a composite ship with the help of another builder. You
know my current project because it is your design, the Genie. I've only
been at it a couple of years now after being out of it for about 10 now.
