Re: [RCSE] Thermal Duration Contest: Triad, 2-Days, etc...

2005-02-10 Thread Daryl Perkins
YES, let's bring it back to life!!! With the winner
having
to take a ride in Daryl's plane for a fly-by!!!

I could quite possibly be persuaded to give the winner
a ride in the Lancair or the 421 - whichever toy I
happen to have with me on the given weekend. Of
course... I get to ride in them all the time... ;-)

Contest participation does seem to be on the decline
on the West Coast the past few years. (I don't know
about the rest of the country) I wonder what the
reasons are. I know my motivation to attend contests
is down. I used to hit at least 2-3/month when I was a
So Cal guy - SWSA, PSS, and then the SCSC.

I'm not necessarily trying to stir up the old format
question - but I wonder if format isn't the reason.
The tasks don't seem to be terribly challenging. Same
ol', same ol', same ol'.

Or are people's interests just going in different
directions? Maybe we're just sick of pounding our
models into the ground? Battery and electric
technology have come pretty far - Watching Paul
Anderson fly his 4.5 ounce 3D electric is pretty cool.
I want to learn to do that. Or the large scale ships
and the draw of aerotow.

Skill levels seem to be on the decline as well. Our
models have gotten so much better and efficient -
easier to make times, and easier to land. We should
all be scoring better. I know I'm not scoring as well
now as I used to - no practice.

Whatever the reasons, it is a shame. What are we
missing?

I resemble that remark... :^) Justin, the Nats are the Nats. If you can
win there you can win anywhere. Josh Glaab beat me last year but I got the
big prize. I don't think Josh has flown at Visalia or any of the Western
states triad series...

Have you Josh?
Go to the Nats and have fun. You won't find a better group people, or
better competition anywhere.

Question: Don't know if an official word was passed out on
the Triad, is this DEAD? We still have the Southwest

going on with this Triad event?
Don't we have enough interest to bring this back and help
bring more interest for these events?
I guess I'm trying to get my flying fix, can't get enough

How about restructuring some sort of TD Championship that

Edgar,
I agree with you. More major soaring events are needed.
As I understand it, Sacramento is interested in becoming the 3rd leg of the
triad. I think this is a valid way to keep it going. I would also like to
be able to attend a soaring championship. We do have the Nat's, but the
numbers seem to be a little low on turnout to really call it a championship.
Maybe some encouragement to attend the Nat's could make it the event it's

I agree. The western states triad was and still is a great idea. Visalia
is a great venue for the anchor event, but there has to be an organizer
that can draw together the contest results data and include the standings
and pilot data to the organizers of the next event. So the SWC scores have
to be normalized and provided to the Spring Fling organizers, then those
results combined with SWC's and provided to the Visalia orgainzers. This
will have to be done in advance so the guys tallying the scores have data
to include in their spreadsheet at the end of the contest. Also, if awards
are to be given, the organizer will have to make that happen as well and
communicate with the involved clubs. I think this could be a one man
deal. However, I am already spread way too thin to take it on. What about
you Edgar? Any time to throw at this project?

Take care,

Re: [RCSE] Thermal Duration Contest: Triad, 2-Days, etc...

2005-02-09 Thread strotherbj

I have read this thread with interest, and offer a couple of thoughts,

A couple of years ago, Dr. Dan submitted a proposal, (Actually Several) for just this kind of thing, and then to base the same around the LSF.

We talked to the idea of East Coast, West Coast, MId States, North and South Regions, ( although we did not talk divying how to do it); With a regoinal in those zones.
You then take the top 5 ( or whatever)from each region, hook up in a central
"TO ALL OR MOST" hosting city, and have at it.
We were not sure about restricting the entry to the regional players only, or allowing anyone plus the regional guys.

Another idea was to have a CASH bash, you may have see a query from me on this in the past, I dropped the idea after a na sayer compared the idea a horse championship or something, and crap about people stretching their limits, crashing planes and alikedrugs, sex and rock and rollgeez

At anyrate, I was at the point of being too busy with moving, work the LSF and the Nats to presue it further.

The major issue for anyone is time, record keeping, and finding sponsors.
The issue with the last item, is "IF" you can find a sponsor, you will probably be out of luck till the next year when they can budget you...
Or I had one guy want a list of the contestants up front, ( bet you can't guess who !!!), and then he might find something for you

Point is, even with todays electronic age, something like this requires "SOME" work which goesusally not rewarded, in any fashion or form.

Lets face it most (NOT ALL)of glider guider populace, are cheap, won't travel, expect everything for nothing, and will absolutely refuse to send an e-mail, or a post card; ( And I know this to be a fact, as I knew one Donor to the Nats raffle that put addresses and stamped postcards in their donation package, all they had to do was mail the darn thing ) to Thank the vendors, donors and/ or Sponsors.

Ergo, there is noithing in it for them except agvaration.

Heck, I know of another guy, who won a really nice prize at an event.
He decided he did not want the prize and he tried to sell the prize back to the donor, FOR RETAIL
Needless to say that donor has left usI can't blame them either.

There is a hearty few of us, who will take the time, to travel, spend the money to lodge, and enjoy the people we meet... a hearty few !!!

Its just not worth the effort !!
My 2 Cents !!
Thanks for the bandwith
Jack

The only thing the Nats needs now is the hands free retrievers like we used

scoot back and forth with the lines only AFTER a launch. No chance of a hang

Don't let Edgar fool you. We have LOTS going on here in SOCAL. First there
is the SC-Squared (SC2) contest series. 8 events this year that will draw
between 40 and 60 pilots per event including a few you may recognize like
Wurts, Perkins, Jolly, Smith, Sage and so on.

Then there are about 8 or 9 clubs between Sand Diego (TPG) and Thousand Oaks
(TOSS) who each do a monthly contest. They are pretty well spaced with not
all being the same weekends and some on Saturday and others on Sunday. I
think if you wanted to you could fly a contest every weekend, or at least 3
out of 4 weekends, each month.

Then there is Phoenix, Visalia and Sacramento along with the NATS for those
that want to make the trip.

Edgar is just hard to please. Like he said, he's a junkie!!

Justin, why don't you attend and see if you have the same opinion. Anyone
that wins at Nats is the Champion, there is always representative skills
and talent there. It's a very challenging set of contests over the week.

So I encourage you and others to attend, you will have fun, you will meet
and fly with some very special people day after day. You will learn, and
you will be challenged, and get to fly on the AMA grounds, very nice.

It really is a good time, it wears me out and rejuvenates me
simultaneously. 8-)

We do have the Nat's, but the numbers seem to be a little low on turnout

Nat's could make it the event it's title indicates.

Re: [RCSE] Thermal Duration Contest: Triad, 2-Days, etc...

2005-02-09 Thread Daryl Perkins
The Triad was a real neat concept. If memory serves me
correctly, it started out with the SWC, the Rose Bowl
2 day, then Visalia representing the last leg. It was
awarded to the top scoring pilot over the three comps,
after scores from each contest were normalized to
1,000. It has died a slow death, with the death of the
Pasadena club. A few clubs tried to keep it alive, ISS
held the second leg, then the guys in Sac tried to
keep it alive. But I don't think anyone reported the
results to the proper person at Visalia, to award the
trophy. I made the trek to all the contests a couple
of times in search of the title, only to have the
trophy not be awarded.

It may have been moved, but the last time I saw the
trophy (it's a perpetual trophy - and it's just awful
looking) it was in the trailer at Visalia. I dropped
it off and ran It's in a huge wooden box, very
well protected.

I'd love to see it resurrected. Shows consistency,
amongst the top western soaring pilots.

2005-02-09 Thread Paul Emerson
Slowly coming back to me . . .

I was approached by someone at Visalia (lost that contact info) who
wanted to represent the 2nd leg (I assume it was the Sacramento club).
If all we need to do as the first leg is normalize the scores and
forward them we can do the triad this year. If that person is out
there ping me off list and I will get you the normalized scores.

Could someone at Visalia verify the location of the trophy?

PS I like the regional over national. Very few have the resources to
travel that far. There are no good thermals east of the Rockies anyway

Re: [RCSE] Thermal Duration Contest: Triad, 2-Days, etc...

2005-02-09 Thread Flying High
YES, let's bring it back to life!!! With the winner having
to take a ride in Daryl's plane for a fly-by!!! The way I
see it... we have the toys in our hangers, let's find a way
to get the most out of them! Fly them as often as
possible!

Again, I'm just trying to strike up some more interest, I
see some clubs closing up and some pilots dropping out of
the contest circuit, let's get together among ourselves and
make this Fun once again! As well, to give some of us
another goal to reach!! That's what it's all about, right
guys!!!
